Two boys are born on the same day, but their lives are very different. Edward Tudor is a prince and Tom Canty is a pauper. One day they decide to change identities. The poor boy’s dreams come true and he lives like a prince. The prince, on the other hand, discovers what life is like on the poor streets of London. But are dreams what they really seem? The boys soon find out!

Born on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri, Samuel L. Clemens wrote under the name of Mark Twain. He wrote several novels, including two major classics of American literature: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He was also a riverboat pilot, journalist, lecturer, entrepreneur and inventor. Twain died on April 21, 1910.

Act one • Two boys narrator. This
is the story of a prince and a pauper. A pauper is a poor person. One day in London, two boys are born. One boy is Tom Canty. His family is poor. The other boy is Edward Tudor. His family is rich. Edward is the Prince of Wales. His father is Henry VIII, the King of England.

Many years later... tom [enters stage.] My name’s Tom Canty. I live in London. The streets are dirty and smelly. I’m a beggar. I must ask people for money.

Well Tom, Where’s the money? tom canty [showing him his empty hands.] I’m sorry father, I haven’t got any money. john canty. What? No money? Go to bed now. No dinner for you! narrator. Poor Tom lies down on the cold, hard floor. tom’s mother [giving Tom a piece of bread.] Here Tom. Have some bread. narrator. Tom’s mother loves him very much. Tom falls asleep. He dreams about a different life.

I like playing with my friends. And in summer I like swimming in the river. prince edward. Playing and swimming! That’s fun! I haven’t got any friends. tom. Yes, but I DON’T like begging for money.
