Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in Saint Michael, on the Island of Barbados, on 20th February 1988. At 16 she moved to the USA to follow her dream: to become a singer. Her first album, Music of the sun, came out in 2005. Her musical style was clear from the start: Rihanna mixes pop, dance, r’n’b and hip-pop and the results are amazing. Since the beginning of her career she has sold 35 million albums and 125,000,000 singles! But her life is not all about success: Rihanna does charity work with her music and she helps children who are suffering from cancer.

revision of modal verbs and of the structures presented throughout the year.

In Italy, in Cervia, every year there is a sand sculpture competition: it is famous in Italy and abroad. The participants have to build a sculpture in 3 days. The theme for this year is “10th century magic”. The audience will choose the most beautiful sculpture and visitors can see them from August to October!

GAME The technique Sand sculptures are made with natural sand and water. You use spades, buckets and small knives. Firstly, you make a mix of sand and water, then you build up the sand until you have a large block until finally you can work with the block to form a sculpture. Then you spray a liquid substance onto the sculpture (made from water and glue) to make it last longer.

Dolphins talk to each other too, through a series of whistles and chirps and they also like to play by jumping out of the water and doing acrobatic spins and twists!

The bottlenose dolphin can be found in many different parts of the world, including the coast of the United Kingdom! Although it spends all of its time in the water, the dolphin is not a fish. In fact it is a mammal, just like you and me! It needs to breathe air, so it has a hole on the top of its head called a blowhole. It doesn’t drink the water which it swims in, but it eats fish and extracts the

Snow leopards are animals in danger: there aren’t many left and they could disappear in a very short time because people hunt them. Around 3,000 snow leopards live in China, in the Tibet Mountains. Here there are also 300 Buddhist monasteries. Buddhism is a philosophy which respects every living creature: for this reason the Buddhist monks are helping to defend the leopards from hunters. Whipsnade was opened on Sunday 23 May 1931. It was such a big success that the following Monday it received 38,000 visitors. One of the first features of the zoo was the Brown Bear enclosure, which you can still see today! rd

Apart from visiting the animals this summer, including the new arrival of the six month old baby giraffe Savannah, you can do a lot of exciting things at the zoo this summer. You can work with the animal keepers, meet the penguins and even sleep at the zoo overnight!

Guests Apart from brown bears, the zoo is home to many different species of animals; over 200 different species to be more precise! And these animals come from all over the world, too! For example, you can see elephants from Asia, rhinos from Nepal, lions from Serengeti and even red pandas, whose natural habitat is the Himalayan Mountains!

Whipsnade Stampede If that’s not enough, why not take part in the fun run at Whipsnade? You can run (or walk, if you prefer) either 5km or 10km in a race around the zoo, passing some of the world’s rarest and most incredible animals on your way!

It is one of the most famous zoos in the United Kingdom and this summer there are lots of exciting and special things to see and do there. Let’s visit Whipsnade Zoo!

The Loch Ness Monster

Dinosaur facts We think that Nessie is a type of plesiosaurus, but in which period did the plesiosaurus really live?

A The Cretaceous period (144 million years ago) B The Jurassic period (208 million years ago) C The Triassic period (245 million years ago)

[ [ [ [ [ [ [

Answer on page 14.

Nessie is the name of the monster who lives in the lake called Loch Ness, in the Highlands of Scotland. On 2nd May 1933, Alex Campbell saw a strange creature in the water of Loch Ness. He described the creature as a “dragon or pre-historic animal”. Then in December of that year a photograph, taken by a man called Hugh Gray, was published in a national newspaper of a strange animal in the lake at Loch Ness. It seems to be similar to a type of dinosaur called the plesiosaurus. Many more people say that they have also seen and photographed the monster, but there is no real proof that it lives in the lake, or that it even exists. What do you think?
