How did “Fridays for Future” start?
I’ve been concerned about the climate crisis since I was 8. Around the world, seven million people die prematurely* because of pollution every single year. That statistic didn’t mean that much to me until the summer of 2018 when it was really hot in Sweden – we had wild fires* and weather we’d never seen before in this Nordic country. I began to properly understand that the climate crisis and the damage we are doing to the environment affect us all, in one way or another. I couldn’t ignore the problem any more and I began my protest. I refused to go to school until the September elections that year, and sat outside the Swedish Parliament to demand a reduction in carbon emissions.
This was how ‘school strike*, for the climate’ (Skolstrejk för klimatet in Swedish) was born. After the 2018 elections, I continued to demonstrate every Friday in front of Parliament, and I moved my protest onto Twitter. Eventually, the Swedish media took an interest, and the idea of ‘Fridays for Future’ (FFF) was copied around the world. Many thousands of young people have joined the movement since, and the rest of the world has taken notice – I was invited to speak at the United Nations.

Has the pandemic had an impact on your work?
Covid has put a stop to in-person protests, of course, but to make up for that we’ve expanded our online campaigning*. In reality, ‘Fridays for Future’ has always been very internetbased so our methods haven’t changed much, and in any case, we’ve always tried to avoid actions that have a negative environmental impact, such as flying. However, the health emergency has overshadowed* the climate crisis. They are seen as separate, but are inextricably* linked. This clear overlap* helped me decide that “Fridays for Future” will donate €100,000 to the WHO, to help fund equal access to antiCovid vaccines. Just like with the climate crisis, we need to support the most vulnerable right now.
