For the roughly seven people who read this column each month (wry smile), I want to commend you on your discerning selection of reading material. The Nevada Press Foundation awards were held last month and the very column you are reading was named 2021’s Best Local Column. Yes, you of impeccable taste and excellent judgment have been reading an award-winning column for the last six years (elevate’s first issue was published in April 2015). I find it ironic to be honored for writing this labor of love every month— because I never wanted this job. I did not intend to accept the editorship of elevate when I was interviewing for the position in early 2015. Not that I didn’t deem it worthy of my time, skills, and attention but because I didn’t believe myself to be up to the challenge of shepherding a brand-new cannabis magazine into the world. My apprehension was based on my complete lack of knowledge about the topic. I knew next to nothing about cannabis. During the interview process when I was told the first issue would be released on April 20th, I responded that I thought it was absurd to launch a magazine mid-month. This is when the magazine’s founders informed me that 4/20 was a cannabis holiday. That illustrated just how much I didn’t know about cannabis culture and cemented my belief that I had no business working at a magazine devoted to the topic. This magazine’s publisher, Guy Bertuzzi, disagreed. He believed my ignorance about cannabis was my strongest asset. He believed that my lack of knowledge would serve me well. Sigh. He was right. Shocking, I know (another wry smile). Turns out my complete lack of enlightenment on the topic was indeed

a helpful attribute. My ignorance gave me a blank slate on which to objectively report on the potency of terpenes, sativa vs. indica, and the attributes of a littleknown cannabinoid called CBD. These topics became cover stories to empower readers to make educated decisions about their cannabis consumption and ensuing health. My lack of education also drove my interest in the benefits of cannabis versus opiates, a cover story we reported on twice, as well telling the stories of veterans who were treating the effects of PTSD with cannabis instead of pharmaceuticals. My mind has been opened to the benefits of cannabis and I feel as though, six years later, I have earned a Ph.D. on the topic. In this column each month I have endeavored to share the nuggets of knowledge I have picked up, whether it’s progressive cannabis legislation that has been passed, or perhaps a recently discovered cannabinoid that proves helpful as an aid for relieving anxiety or promoting sleep. Or in the case of my award-winning column, it was my rumination over the utter three-ring circus that last year turned out to be. In fact, my opening line is what hooked NPF’s judges. I wrote: “In an exit worthy of a drunken circus ringmaster getting the hook following a wretchedly morose performance, 2020 is finally gone.” Turns out the human cannonball experience that encapsulated 2020 was to my benefit. You know how the old saying goes: When life gives you lemons, exploit them till the sour tastes sweet.

In-person performances are back and bring with them a post-pandemic contact high by Josh Bell

DOUG BENSON

with special guests to be announced. Obviously, the show starts at 4:20 p.m. Doug Loves Movies: October 9, 4:20 p.m., $25. Wiseguys Las Vegas, vegas.wiseguyscomedy.com.

REGGAE RISE UP Few celebrities have made cannabis a central part of their public image as much as comedian Doug Benson. From his earliest days in stand-up, Benson has been an outspoken cannabis user and activist, and most of his successful projects, from stage production The MarijuanaLogues to web series Getting Doug With High to courtroom reality show The High Court, have involved cannabis as a key element. “I’ve gotten my best ideas when I’m high,” he told High Times in March. “Also, some terrible ones.” With his affable stoner image, Benson comes off as goofy and approachable, but he’s also a hardworking advocate for the cause he believes in. His 2007 documentary Super High Me starts with a premise that sounds like a silly parody of Morgan Spurlock’s hit Super Size Me, but its examination of Benson’s marijuana usage reveals a serious message along with the comedy. Benson’s love of cannabis is rivaled only by his love of movies, and he’s been hosting his popular podcast Doug Loves Movies since 2006. The podcast combines Benson’s laid-back, sarcastic persona with a deep knowledge of cinema, extending to the guests who join Benson and the various movie-themed games that they play. The podcast’s signature feature is the Leonard Maltin Game, built around pithy movie descriptions from the legendary film critic’s comprehensive movie guides. Benson brings the live version of Doug Loves Movies to the new Wiseguys comedy club located in Downtown Las Vegas’s Arts District, along

It may technically be fall, but in Las Vegas summer weather often lasts well into October, which means that this month is still the perfect time for an outdoor reggae festival. And fans of Reggae Rise Up have been waiting a long time to enjoy their favorite bands under Vegas skies, with multiple pandemic-related postponements pushing the festival. Vegas remains a reggae haven, so the enthusiasm for this event and its performers has only grown during its time away. Headliners Slightly Stoopid and Dirty Heads are both regular Vegas visitors, chilled-out reggae rock bands that provide the perfect soundtrack for the desert heat. Both bands hail from Southern California, and are heavily influenced by SoCal reggae-rock legends Sublime. Late Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell signed Slightly Stoopid to their first record deal, and one of Dirty Heads’ most popular songs, “Lay Me Down,” features guest vocals by current Sublime With Rome frontman Rome Rodriguez. The good vibes continue all the way down the Reggae Rise Up bill, with reggae mainstays like Matisyahu, J Boog,

Collie Buddz, Common Kings, Inna Vision and more. It’s pretty much inherent to reggae and its offshoots that these artists are cannabis supporters, and many of them promote their own cannabis brands, from Slightly Stoopid’s Stoopid Organics to Collie Buddz’s Bermuda Triangle strain to Dirty Heads’ StickE-Vape. The music’s association with cannabis has never been a secret, but artists can now embrace it even more openly, just adding to the upbeat atmosphere that defines a reggae show. Reggae Rise Up: October 9-10, $85. Downtown Las Vegas Event Center, reggaeriseupvegas.com.

ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL

At Electric Daisy Carnival, promoters refer to attendees as “headliners,” and that’s not just a cute marketing tactic. Sure, the festival features a stacked line-up of electronic dance music’s top artists, but if you look at pictures from festivals past, almost all of them focus on the people in the crowd. That’s because EDC is more than just a music festival: It’s a communal gathering place for fans of electronic dance music, who embody the scene’s old-school mantra of PLUR (“peace, love, unity, respect”). It’s been a long time since raves were an underground phenomenon, and the artists performing at EDC are some of the biggest names in music. But the festival keeps that spirit of solidarity alive, especially in difficult times. “I wanted to take a moment to thank you for joining us under the electric sky in 2021,” EDC founder Pasquale Rotella said in an August email to ticketholders. “I know it’s been a rough couple of years getting to this point, but I’m excited to know we’ll all be reunited once again on the dance floor.” This year’s EDC attendees will be dancing to the music of superstars like Alesso, The Chainsmokers, Kygo, Diplo, Paul Oakenfold and many, many more. Plenty of EDC’s biggest acts are regular performers at Vegas nightclubs, but the festival gives them a chance to stretch their artistic muscles for a dedicated audience of music fans. The festival’s

trippy visuals are just as important as the music, making for three days of immersive, mind-expanding entertainment. Electric Daisy Carnival: October 22-24, $379-$779. Las Vegas Motor Speedway, lasvegas.electricdaisycarnival.com.

PHISH

No two Phish shows are alike. The veteran jam band has set the standard for just about every other artist in the genre for nearly four decades now, and the creativity of Phish’s live sets remains unparalleled. Jam bands exist to be

8

experienced in the moment, so the lengthy concert hiatus has been particularly brutal for Phish and similar acts. So Phish’s return to Las Vegas this month is especially triumphant, not only as a chance for fans to catch the band in concert again, but also as the continuation of two beloved Phish traditions. The band has been performing multi-night stands in Las Vegas for many years, as a gathering point for fans from around the country. Phish also has a longstanding practice of donning “musical costumes,” performing an entire album by another musical artist as part of its Halloween show. A few of these past musical costume shows have taken place in Vegas, and there’s every reason to believe that Phish will pull out another surprise set of covers at their Vegas Halloween show this year. Past musical costumes have included albums by The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, David Bowie and more. Cannabis has always been an integral part of the Phish experience, from fans who use it to enhance their listening to the band members who use it to enhance their creativity. And the open, welcoming nature of the Phish fanbase means that there’s always plenty to go around at every Phish show, all the better to appreciate each unique experience. NEVADA TAKES LEAD ON CBD IN VETERINARY MEDICINE Starting October 1st, new law lets practitioners recommend, administer cannabis product to pets By Anna Campbell

N

evada has become the first state in the U.S. to authorize veterinarians to recommend and administer CBD under a new law that protects practitioners from disciplinary action if they treat veterinary patients with the cannabis derivative. The law took effect on Oct. 1. Nevada Assemblyman Steve Yeager, sponsor of the legislation that passed last month, said it broadly clarifies for veterinarians rules regarding cannabidiol, or CBD. They can now talk about CBD with pet owners, explain which products are appropriate, offer recommendations and dosing advice, and even administer the products. "They can do all that without having to worry about being disciplined by their board, which was really the main concern behind the bill," Yeager said. Two other states, California and Michigan, allow veterinarians to discuss the use of cannabis with clients but not administer such products to clients' pets. Most states are silent on the use of cannabis products in veterinary medicine. With 40 jurisdictions in the United States now allowing people to take cannabis as medicine, and 20 jurisdictions also allowing adults to use cannabis for recreation—according to tallies by the National Conference of State Legislatures—the nebulous status of therapeutic use in veterinary patients has caused a dilemma for the profession. Meanwhile, the marketplace hasn't hesitated, with vendors promoting CBD and hemp products for pets as well as people. One of many biologically active compounds in cannabis, CBD does not cause intoxication or euphoria and has generated interest for its possible therapeutic benefits.

10

elevatenv.com | october 2021

Without explicit authorization, veterinarians by and large have been hesitant to discuss with pet owners the potential medicinal application of a product that, before 1996, was illegal in every U.S. state except for federally authorized research.

WHAT’S CHANGED Today, Nevada is among the states where cannabis is legal for human medical and adult recreational use. The new law pertaining to veterinary use follows a similar bill in 2015 that never made it to the floor. That legislation would have enabled animals to receive medical marijuana registry cards. Yeager, sponsor of the successful bill, said he suspects the state simply wasn't ready to take such a step in 2015, pointing to the fact that its dispensary program was still in early stages, which likely prompted fears of doing too much too soon. "I think we fast-forward six years later, and the landscape is just really different in the state," he said. "I think there's a comfort level with the cannabis industry, with CBD, that just was not there in 2015."

ANOTHER BIG SHIFT Federal law has softened. Whereas all forms and derivatives of the cannabis plant previously were regulated as schedule 1 controlled substances, meaning the U.S. government saw it as having a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use, that changed with the passage of the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018. Informally known as the 2018 Farm Bill, the legislation provided a carve-out for hemp, defined as cannabis

plants and plant parts containing no more than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol. THC, as it's commonly known, is the compound in cannabis that imparts a high. Meanwhile, published research is starting to mount on CBD in veterinary patients, including studies on the pharmacokinetics of CBD oil in healthy dogs and dogs with osteoarthritis; and a study on the efficacy of CBD in treating epileptic dogs. There is also research focused on the safety of cannabinoids in small doses in dogs and in cats.

BILL PASSED EASILY Yeager became involved with the issue near the end of 2020, when he was approached by a lobbyist for the Nevada State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. He said she offered him a bill, already written. A champion of cannabis-related legislation, Yeager agreed that it was a "nice gap to fix." "Of course, I asked her what I always ask, which is 'How many people are going to come out of the woodwork and really hate this idea and oppose it?'" he recounted. "And to her credit, she said, 'I'm not aware of anybody. I've talked to folks, and everybody seems to be ok with it.' So thankfully, that's how it actually turned out." Indeed, the journey of the groundbreaking legislation was remarkably unremarkable: It received unanimous yes votes in both chambers and flew through Assembly and Senate

committees with not a single word of testimony in opposition. Yeager, a Democrat, found common ground on the bill across party lines, with one conservative member of the Assembly offering to speak on the bill's behalf on the floor. Similar legislation has appeared in other states, to varying degrees of success. A law in Michigan that took effect March 24 allows veterinarians to "consult with an owner on the use of marihuana or industrial hemp on an animal of the owner." In 2018, California became the first state to recognize the use of marijuana as medicine for veterinary patients with a law that protects licensees from disciplinary action for solely discussing its use. Subsequent attempts to expand California veterinarians' latitude, enabling them to recommend cannabis, have so far been stymied. A bill introduced this session, AB 384, is stalled in the Appropriations Committee. Rhode Island, New York and Oklahoma also considered related legislation in this session, according to American Veterinary Medical Association President Dr. Douglas Kratt. In Rhode Island, a bill to make pets eligible for medical marijuana has been held for further study. Similar bills in New York and Oklahoma did not make it out of committee before the states' legislative sessions adjourned. Under The Nevada Sun

Amargosa Valley becomes home to state’s largest sun-grown cannabis cultivation By Beth Schwartz Who on earth, besides Mother Nature, of course, would think it a good idea to grow cannabis in the desert? Either someone who was just a little bit crazy or someone who had innovated solutions around the obvious environmental challenges indigenous to a desert clime. Between the obvious heat and water-barren land, Southern Nevada’s Mojave Desert would not seem to offer prime conditions for cultivating cannabis outdoors. Yet, there is a cannabis company that has staked its claim to grow cannabis in the heart of the Armargosa Valley. Located approximately 88 miles northwest of Las Vegas in Nye County, the Amargosa Desert is sandwiched between U.S. 95 to the north, and the California border to the south. It would seem a fitting place to grow cannabis with Death Valley National Park and Area 51 on opposing sides. In September, MJ Holdings, Inc. received approval to transfer its recreational and medical cannabis cultivation and production license from its three-acre farm located in Pahrump to The Farm, a 260-acre piece of land in Amargosa Valley. “This milestone marks the beginning of our expansion to becoming one of the largest cultivators in the U.S.,” Roger Bloss, CEO of MJ Holdings, says. Using innovation, technology, and out-of-the-box thinking, MJ Holdings plans to harness the advantages of outdoor growing—employing the sun, natural airflow, and mineral-dense soil—to benefit cannabis plants. “Mother Nature's going to do over 99 percent of the work. All we're doing is basically just guiding a little bit. And then we might be adding a little bit of light, we might add a little bit of heat, that type of thing,” explains the company’s founder and Chairman Paris Balaouras, who has been growing cannabis for more than 20 years. Although he has grown cannabis both inside and out, the latter is Balaouras’s preference. “I think that is going to be the true future,” he predicts of outdoor grows. “And that's why we're so excited about it and are doing it this way. It's moving forward but we're actually moving backwards to the way that the plant fundamentally was grown for thousands of years—to actually use the sun and use Mother Nature to get the best result, to get the strongest plant and natural selection.”

YOU CAN’T REPLICATE THE SUN Balaouras does not consider the cultivation he is building at The Farm to be either an outdoor grow or a greenhouse grow. Instead, he refers to it as hybrid outdoor. “We've built a system using material that cuts out some of the actual harsh rays from the sun which gives you results that are more of a full spectrum type of extraction,” Balaouras explains. “When you start taking too many things away then you get less of what Mother Nature can give you. So, in comparison to an indoor grow, where you have manufactured lights or lightbulbs, you're not getting full spectrum because it's not a full spectrum lightbulb. No one's made that up yet. No one's going to copy the sun.” Additionally, the presence of bountiful sunlight and heat reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and it inhibits parasitic growth. “In the desert when you're getting up to 115° that plant can handle it. Number two, there's benefits from the sun that you would never get in a regular indoor grow as far as pest control, as far as mold, yeast—it won't grow. You won't see those type of things out in the desert,” Balaouras says. “Unlike in Florida where you have relative humidities in the 50 or 60 percent range, you're going to get a lot of all those things, you're getting a lot of bugs, you're going to get a lot of mold, yeast, and fungus. Whereas in the desert, you're just not going to see any of that.”

MOTHER NATURE’S ROCKS STARS: WATER, WIND & HEAT One of the most precious components critical to any crop’s success is water. In the case of The Farm, they will be utilizing groundwater from Amargosa Valley’s aquifer, rather than the surface water of Lake Mead. “We have the number one thing that you need after the land, obviously, the water. We have the water rights,” says Balaouras. “Because if you don't have water in the desert then you don't have the water anywhere, you're done.” MJ Holdings has acquired 180-acre feet of water rights. “Paris bought land that sits on an aquifer. Our aquifer is replenished by rainwater so we are not touching any of the consumer water,” adds Bloss.

13

It might be a bit hard to fathom, but the Mojave’s three-digit temperatures are an advantage to a cannabis cultivation. “The sun is a disinfectant,” offers Balaouras. “The sun is actually a pest control. When the plant is growing at its peak vegetative state, it's 110° out there and the relative humidity is less than 10 percent so mold can’t grow. And in talking about spider mites and different pests, they can't function in that heat.” The desert’s wind-driven blow dryer effect is another helpful component to the growing process. “Because you're getting full spectrum sunlight, you get that full air exchange. You don't have 30 rotation fans in a room trying to pull out air and moving it around, you've got full air and we’ve always got a breeze out there. The plant loves it,” Balaouras enthuses. “Mother Nature's doing 99 percent. You're not hand watering, you have a watering system, you've got feeding systems. You’re basically just taking care of the plants, your de-leafing so they get a better airflow underneath the plant and that helps it along.” There is one downside to the heat—the human element. “The only negative thing is that it's hot. As soon as we get over a certain temperature, we just pull our people off. We don't want people working when it spikes right in the middle of the summer, it's just a safety situation at that point,” says Balaouras.

TINY HOME COMMUNITY {THC} “I think the biggest challenge, and one we knew about, is manpower. You need people. After our 2018 harvest, which yielded approximately 5,400 lbs. of cannabis, we came to realize that we would need to find a more efficient method of bringing our cultivation team to our facilities every day,” Balaouras explains. He adds that “it takes a special kind of person that likes that lifestyle, too because you don't want to be traveling back and forth every night especially after a long day. So, you really need that person that just loves the whole idea of growing in the desert and loves cannabis.” Bloss chimes in. “I love what Paris decided to do. He went out and bought a former housing park, which they converted into an RV park, which we're going to convert into a tiny home community to house our workers.” MJ Holding’s tiny home community (THC) being built for employees is located a few miles from The Farm and will also include a clubhouse, indoor pool, market, and hemp genetics lab. A video outlining the community is available for viewing at mjholdingsinc.com.

ENVIRONMENTALLY COST EFFECTIVE Naturally, based on using so many components courtesy of Mother Nature it is more cost effective for a hybrid outdoor grow

to cultivate cannabis compared with an indoor grow. “Over those grows that we’ve done, we’ve learned how to make it even more cost effective. If you think about it, you're heating indoors with a 1000-watt light or higher, and you’re pounding that plant and you're increasing the temperature. You have to bring in massive HVAC systems to cool it down. So, you're building up, that's even stranger to me, then you're having to cool it down. Then while you're heating it up you're watering it, which increases the relative humidity massively because that's how the plant breathes. Then you’ve got to do something about that humidity because once it goes too high than the plant can’t absorb and uptake water and nutrients.” A hybrid grow does require electricity. “You've got pumps and you've got some supplemental lighting. You've got some electronics, cameras. So, you definitely have electricity, but not nearly the capacity that you need to grow indoors,” explains Balaouras.

CRACKING SEEDS Balaouras has already completed two growing seasons using a three-acre hybrid environment in Pahrump in anticipation of eventually setting up shop at The Farm. Those trial runs allowed him to find out which strains were most adaptive to the temperatures and low humidity levels native to desert environs.

“We've actually taken those two grow trials to figure out which strains worked in that environment the best. We've tried strains in different ways here in Nevada and then we've added another 10 to 15 different strains to that selection because you also want to keep adding strains to your toolbox,” says Balaouras. “They (the plants) can grow massively, by the way, they can be as high as seven or eight feet in a grow season.” Balaouras is also pleased with the terpene results he is getting. “We're getting better terpene profiles than most people out there. The results are on the COAs (certificate of analysis) are measurable results we can show people.” With all of nature’s components in place and two trial harvests under his belt, Balaouras and his MJ Holdings team already know they will be able to have two harvests each year at The Farm and are hopeful they may get three. As far as approximate yield by the pound, that has yet to be determined. “The advantages of The Farm, including excellent soils, organic growth, and company-owned water rights as well as key advancements in our core team have brought forth prospective opportunities to forge partnerships with unique companies in the Nevada industry,” says Balaouras, who adds, “we’ll definitely be growing this year. Soon we will start cracking seeds and bringing mothers up.”

THE CROPTOBER PHENOMENON Does Nevada have what it takes to grow cannabis outdoors? By Beth Schwartz

Croptober is here. It refers to the month of October when the vast majority of outdoor, or sun-grown, cannabis crops have reached their peak production and are ready for harvest. The croptober phenomenon does not have much effect on the Nevada marketplace because outdoor grows weren’t legalized until 2018 so that part of the industry is still taking root. However, there are a few outdoor cannabis cultivations sprinkled around the state. MJ Holding’s 260-acre farm (profiled on page 13) is in Nye County’s Amargosa Valley. Central Nevada is home to Ely’s Silver Lion Farms which sits on a 2,750-acre campus and includes a 250,000-square-foot hemp greenhouse. Finally, Northern Nevada, which offers more cannabis friendly growing conditions, has one outdoor cultivation, Quinn River Farms, sitting on tribal land in McDermitt at the Nevada/Oregon border. Although outdoor or greenhouse cultivations aren’t yet plentiful in Nevada, they do have a place despite perceived drawbacks. “The biggest misconception is you can't grow in heat. For years we grew outside in Las Vegas in 105- to 110-degree heat—those plants will thrive, they will grow,” Aaron Nino, CAMP’s Director of Production, says. “The difference is when you start to get into stuff like what I do and you value your cannabinoid profiles and your terpene profiles high heat sometimes…I wouldn't say burns off your terpenes or your cannabinoids, but it makes them less prevalent in your final extract. So,

16

elevatenv.com | october 2021

growing under an LED light with those lumens that give you that full spectrum preserve a lot more of those terpenes and cannabinoids which are extremely important to CAMP in how we create our solventless oils. It's also very important in our flower. Flower is key, flower matters. Our CAMP flower needs to have all of those flavor profiles that the strain or genetics is designed to give us.” Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nino is very familiar with croptober. “My family has been growing outdoors for 20-plus years in Medford, Oregon. They're almost about to deal with croptober, they've got two-and-a-half weeks left,” explains Nino, who oversees two indoor cultivations for Nevada Organic Remedies. Both facilities are approximately 4,500 square feet. The Las Vegas facility has five separated flower rooms and the grow in Pahrump has six. Nino, who has been growing cannabis for 15-plus years, prefers to grow indoors. “In this climate and with our temperatures, to grow quality medicine you have to grow indoors in Las Vegas and Pahrump, and let's just say Nevada as a whole because we typically are a very hot state. Reno gets a little bit cooler temperatures for sure but since we're growing in Southern Nevada and Las Vegas and Pahrump the temperatures are something that we battle to keep our cannabinoid and terpene profiles consistent.” Growing cannabis indoors offers one element Mother Nature doesn’t— control. “Growing indoors we can control our temperature, we can control

our humidity, we can control our light cycles, which is how we're able to get more harvests,” Nino continues, “versus croptober and harvesting outdoors, you really only get one (harvest), sometimes you can get two, depending on how you can manipulate your light. But, at most, outdoor growers are doing one 12-month cycle. “Indoors we can control how we push that vegetative state into a flowering state because we can control our 12-hour light cycles, our eight-hour cycles which increases our harvest. With LED, we get this full spectrum light that emphasizes our cannabinoid and our terpene profiles. We're able to kind of genetically engineer the types of oil that we get out of our flower whereas in an outdoor grow, you can't do that, you're at the mercy of the sun and the seasons,” Nino explains. “When you start to focus on the quality of cannabis in solventless, you need to go backwards and go into the grow because it all starts with cultivating quality and cultivating strong genetics that are meant for solventless production.” Nino is not discounting that Nevada Organic Remedies will eventually make a foray into the great outdoors. “We have a big footprint in Pahrump where we could expand to greenhouse grows. It's definitely in our plans, not in the near future but we have the acreage to do it. So should we decide to do a greenhouse grow outdoors where you're getting that full spectrum sunlight, we have the ability to do it and it is on our radar.”

Magical & Mystical Cannabis Terpenes and cannabinoids drive the healing properties of cannabis By Justin Alexander In a month festive with mystical holidays such as Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, elevate’s October review focuses on the magical properties of cannabis. Those terpene-induced properties could include everything from being a dreamy sleep aid, an appetite stimulator, and pain reliever to an anxiety and stress buster, and depression suppressor. Like treats collected on All Hallows’ Eve, we have assembled a slew of products that offer not only the opportunity for your body and mind to rest and relax but may also give you natural healing effects. To follow are a few edible, flower and concentrate suggestions that might just be the plant-based potion you need to expel an ailment like a witch banishes wicked spirits with her otherworldly powers.

GRAPE MONSTER BY FLEUR

Product format: Flower Medical or Recreation: Recreational For the novice, semi-regular user or professional: All Strain Origins: Monster Cookies x Elephant Stomper Cannabinoid breakdown: THC percentage levels average in

the mid-20s Terpene Mix: Myrcene, Limonene, Caryophyllene, Linalool What to expect: What do all grape-flavored things remind you of? For us, they recall deliciously decadent grape soda, the kind of intense flavor you only truly appreciated as a kid, right? Well, the Grape Monster is an adult treat that we think everyone will enjoy but now we look at him as a furry, friendly monster versus a scary one. It is a sativa strain with a robust fruity tone that is great for starting the day with a bang. This strain will uplift the mind, body, and spirit with a unique kind of energy—without making you feel as if your mind is racing. If you feel yourself slipping into negativity, this will wipe it away and replace bad thoughts with a purple haze of happiness. Use this for socializing or a power cleaning spree. The scent is a pleasing mix of funky cheese and sweet grapes—and makes for a perfect accompaniment to a rich Merlot for our wine lovers. Grape Monster and a nice glass of wine sounds like the perfect trick and treat. Where to find it: Planet 13, The Sanctuary, Jenny's NLV, Zenleaf NLV, Sierra Well

bite, perfect for the spooky season for those who want to relive the trick or treat experience daily. However, this product leans toward the treat category as there are no tricks on how to eat it or how smooth the high. Dense like a brownie, Evergreen Organix’s Magic Bar layers sweet caramel batter with a graham cracker crust and is then topped with coconut flakes, chocolate chips and peanut butter morsels. The flavor profile fits right in line with the fall season. At 100mg, it’s an option for those who have a higher tolerance for edibles. Depending on your body weight and other factors, a 5mg dose can take anywhere from an hour to two hours to take effect so start small and increase with care. This all-over-high will leave you both alert and relaxed for total body wellness. Where to find it: Essence Henderson, Pisos, and NV Made on W. Charleston

CAST A CBD SPELL

HOW TO CONJURE UP A WITCH HAZEL’S BREW OF DIY SKINCARE TONIC BY TAIYA THOMPSON, CROOKEDCACTUSCBD.COM @CROOKEDCACTUSCBD

W

ith Halloween around the corner, it’s that time of year where we get to fully express our alter-egos, get bold and creative with makeup, and indulge in candy and spooky spirits. But let’s creep it real—the late nights, sweaty costumes, and heavy makeup can wreak havoc on our skin. Luckily, two scary good beauty ingredients can remedy the situation. October 21 is National Witch Hazel Day. As one of the few FDA-approved non-prescription drug ingredients and endorsed by real witches, it deserves a day of recognition. Rich in tannins, witch hazel is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin against damage, tightens pores, reduces acne, smooths fine lines, and wards off signs of aging. Given its versatility, modern witches believe it’s a magical herb that heightens occult powers, keeps away evil, and heals broken hearts. Hemp-derived CBD is a powerful phytochemical boasting many of the same benefits for your skin. It calms skin irritations, reduces inflammation, boosts nutrients, and is a powerful antioxidant. At Crooked Cactus CBD, we have conjured up a DIY toner recipe that combines these two hero ingredients as well as a simple beauty routine for screamingly healthy skin. 1. After a night of spooks, always cleanse your face before going to bed. Use an oil-based makeup remover to get rid of anything left behind. Visit our IG stories @crookedcactuscbd for a witch hazel- and aloe-based homemade makeup remover recipe. 2. Once your face is makeup free, exfoliate your skin to guard against breakouts, unclog pores, and to prep your skin for other products. Try our detoxing CBD-infused volcanic clay or sugar scrubs. 3. Whip up a batch of facial toner pads. Gently sweep the face using 1-2 pads and allow to air dry.

28

elevatenv.com | october 2021

4. Continue with your beauty routine applying serums, creams, or spot treatments first then finish with moisturizer and facial oil.

DIY FACE TONER PADS WHAT YOU NEED:

glass measuring cup small glass bowl 8 oz. mason jar cotton face rounds 1/2 cup witch hazel (we love Thayers alcohol-free with rose water) 50mg CBD isolate or oil tincture 1.5 cups distilled water 1 Tbsp. vitamin E oil 10 drops each of lavender, tea tree, and lemon essential oil (or your fave oils for skincare)

DIRECTIONS: 1. Combine distilled water and witch hazel in a glass measuring cup. 2. In small glass bowl, combine CBD, vitamin E oil, and essential oils. Stir thoroughly then add to glass measuring cup. Continue to stir until ingredients are fully incorporated. 3. Fill the mason jar halfway with cotton rounds. 4. Pour the solution into the mason jar just enough to cover and completely saturate the cotton rounds. 5. Fill the rest of the jar with cotton rounds. Push down on the rounds until you feel the liquid soaking up the new layer of dry rounds. Add more solution or rounds, if necessary. 6. Cover the jar and keep in bathroom for easy toning or as a skin refresher when sweaty or oily and can’t take a shower right away
