Where the sun shines into the concert hall: for three weeks in August, »Elbphilharmonie Summer« offers a wonderfully refreshing programme with exciting bands and orchestras from around the world. Some concerts are also shown live on a big screen on the forecourt. There is something here for everyone: after the opening concert with the jazz legend Kenny Barron there are two silent films with live music, and captivating ensembles such as the Afrobeat jazz band Sons of Kemet, who introduce the »Afrofuturism« spotlight. Barron’s jazz colleague Jason Moran then gives a solo performance on the piano. The second half of the summer belongs to the symphony orchestras, including the Chineke! Orchestra from London. Predominantly made up of people of colour and members of ethnic minorities, the orchestra not only performs excellent music, it also conveys a political message: more diversity in music! This is a path also taken by the Philadelphia Orchestra, which is coming to Hamburg with the soprano Angel Blue and a programme of works mainly by black, female composers. Together with the orchestras from Pittsburgh and Cleveland, it forms an America spotlight leading up to the grand finale: after two years in which coronavirus restrictions practically put a stop to international touring, three leading US orchestras give guest performances in the Elbphilharmonie in the same week. Wolfgang Rihm is one of the world’s most important contemporary composers: with his 400+ works, the polymath from Karlsruhe has created a universe that is almost impossible to pigeonhole. From a very young age he was less interested in strict aesthetic dogmas than in transition, change and music in a constant state of flow. Over the decades, Rihm has unleashed many such moments through a permanent current of creativity. As a result, his music is not only accessible, but also – outrageously for some avantgarde hardliners – sometimes even positively pleasant. The composer’s 70th birthday is now taken as an opportunity to highlight his multifaceted work. What quickly becomes apparent is the virtuosity with which Rihm succeeds in bringing very different line-ups to life. »Wolfgang Rihm is one of those composers who write for the voice in a very classical way«, says the baritone Georg Nigl, to whom Rihm dedicated the song cycle »Vermischter Traum«. His concerto »Séraphin« is conceived for 16 players, an expression of his fascination with the playwright and poet Antonin Artaud, enfant terrible of the French avantgarde. Ensemble Modern, one of the world’s leading New Music formations, now performs this work. The series »Verwandlung« dives headlong into a large orchestra’s profusion of tone colours, facilitated in this case by the long-awaited return of Franz Welser-Möst and his Cleveland Orchestra.

Space is the place! After the Second World War, society developed an ardent enthusiasm for technology and progress: the space race, the moon landing and science fiction novels to name but a few manifestations. Afro-American culture did not remain unaffected by this trend, but its vision of the future took on a different form – the utopia of a freer world with different hierarchies and no limits on self-actualisation. The expanses of the galaxy were a place to escape racism, marginalisation and indignity. Labelled »Afrofuturism«, this movement quickly developed its own aesthetic principles, with the jazz legend and prophetic visionary Sun Ra playing a key role: drawing on the imagery of ancient African civilisations and cosmic spirituality, and later through experimentation with electronic sound production. The legendary sun king of jazz died in 1993, yet his legacy lives on. In November, his Sun Ra Arkestra is performing in the Elbphilharmonie, led by his long-time musical companion Marshall Allen, who will be 98. Afrofuturism was given a new dynamism by the Black Lives Matter movement. Marvel’s big-screen blockbuster »Black Panther« is the most famous example of that. But many young musicians are also reaching out to the
future with relish again, delighting audiences in the process. On »Black to the Future«, the Sons of Kemet, led by saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, make an assault on the future with furious yet danceable horn sounds. Angel Bat Dawid is an exceptional phenomenon: she is a multi-instrumentalist and composer as well as a DJ. Her concerts blend music, meditation and dance. Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah reconsiders what’s possible through jazz. He calls his sound »stretch music«, which incorporates elements of hip-hop as well as alternative rock. The Grammy-nominated trumpeter Theo Croker also plays freely and without heeding genre boundaries. And Ravi Coltrane dedicates an intimate concert to exploring the legacy of another spiritual powerhouse in jazz history: his parents John and Alice Coltrane.

Esa-Pekka Salonen
There are composing conductors and conducting composers. And then there’s Esa-Pekka Salonen, the universal musician, whom one critic called »one of the few true double talents in the music world«. That praise is entirely justified, as his engagements around the world and his – always euphorically acclaimed – performances in the Elbphilharmonie testify. The artist, who was born in Helsinki in 1958, already gave multiple guest performances here in spring 2022, kicking off a portrait series that will stretch over two seasons. The »Multiverse Esa-Pekka Salonen« series now continues – or perhaps we should say »expands«. Over ten concerts, fans and friends, newcomers and the adventurous, all have an opportunity to immerse themselves in Salonen’s musical cosmos. In the majority of cases the man himself will be on the conductor’s podium. In the first concert he is teaming up with the Vienna Philharmonic for Olivier Messiaen’s monumental »Turangalîla-Sinfonie«, which Salonen says »opened up a whole new world« for him as a teenager. They are joined by pianist Yuja Wang, who can also be seen performing piano concertos by Sergey Rachmaninov and Magnus Lindberg. Salonen presents two programmes with the San Francisco Symphony, whose chief conductor he became in 2020 after posts in Los Angeles and London, and another two programmes with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. A number of his own compositions are also being performed, including the string quartet »Homunculus«, a tone poem about the Greek goddess of the night Nyx, which meanders between Ravel and Mahler, the Bachinspired »Fog« and, for the grand finale, a spectacular new organ concerto written for and performed by Iveta Apkalna, the Elbphilharmonie’s titular organist. 18 |

The mandolin, a plucked instrument with eight strings that is tricky to play, is often underappreciated. However, it is a wonderful solo instrument that has worked its way from Baroque to bluegrass. Having been named Instrument of the Year 2023 by the German federal state councils for music, the mandolin is really coming under the spotlight. Some of the world’s most creative and technically impressive mandolin players deliver strong arguments supporting that choice in the Elbphilharmonie. In the opening concert, Chris Thile from the USA – who has already delighted the Elbphilharmonie audience more than once – demonstrates that you can deliver thrilling solo concerts on the mandolin. Avi Avital takes the instrument’s role in Italian Baroque as a basis for many spectacular expansions to the repertoire. In Hamburg he gives a guest performance with his Between Worlds Ensemble, which delves into European and Near-Eastern musical traditions. In their programme »Routes of Discovery«, Hamilton de Holanda, one of the top stars of música popular brasileira, and the pianist Nduduzo Makhathini trace the musical interconnections between Brazil and South Africa that go back to slavery. And the classically trained Caterina Lichtenberg performs a programme built around the theme of love with the folk musician Mike Marshall.

THOMAS LARCHER »Music of such urgency is rare in our time«, writes the music journalist Anselm Cybinski about the works of Thomas Larcher. The composer admits that he has an instinct for the emotional rapture of major and minor, for classical forms such as the sonata and solo concerto, for »remarkably original sounds«, as one critic said, and for unbounded experimentation. »I just want to compose as freely and naturally as possible«, he explains. »Where is beauty and emotion? Where are the works that concern the listener, that have something to do with their life?« Raised in the Tyrol, Larcher soaked up the sounds of Mozart, Bach and Schubert as an adolescent pianist, and was later fascinated by free spirits of jazz such as Ornette Coleman and Gil Evans. In his own work, the extremes are always positioned close together: furious runs, meditative chords and experimental playing techniques are designed to take the listener »to a different sphere«. A series of his most captivating works is now being performed in the Elbphilharmonie, from the premiere of his latest string quartet to the German premiere of his new work for large orchestra as part of »Elbphilharmonie Visions«. »The Living Mountain« perfectly exemplifies the importance of the singing voice in Larcher’s oeuvre – an attempt to »hear the entire universe of music in a bird’s call«.

JAN LISIECKI The Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki is widely regarded as a shooting star at the keyboard. He began studying piano when he was five years old, and when he was only 13, the BBC Music Magazine praised his »mature musicality« and »sparkling technique«. Lisiecki’s career has gone from strength to strength ever since. In Hamburg, he is performing a number of showpieces from his repertoire, including piano concertos by Mozart and Beethoven that feature in his discography: Lisiecki’s performance of all five Beethoven concertos with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields is considered to be one of the highlights of the Beethoven Year 2020. He will also appear as the soloist in Grieg’s wonderfully romantic Piano Concerto in A minor, and give a solo recital.

Anton Bruckner has a special standing among symphony composers. Originally an organist, he applied the concept of registration to the orchestra to create masterpieces of overpowering sound. »For me, he is one of the very greatest«, says the Estonian star conductor Paavo Järvi, who is coming to the Elbphilharmonie for three Bruckner concerts. While Järvi is often in Hamburg performing with the lean Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, for this series of concerts he is accompanied by Switzerland’s weightiest orchestra, whose chief conductor he is too. Järvi has selected three very different symphonies for the extended weekend: the Sixth, which Bruckner regarded as his »boldest«; the epic, 80-minute Eighth; and the Third, which was the Austrian composer’s homage to his great inspiration Wagner.

SUFI FESTIVAL As the mystical and spiritual tradition of Islam, Sufism has fascinated people for centuries. Trance and transcendence lie side by side here as a Sufi seeks the presence of God in the dissolution of physical boundaries, either through asceticism or ecstasy, meditation or dance. The emphasis is on inwardfocused, direct personal access – the spiritual path of Islam known as »tarīqa«. As a result of this approach, Sufism has retained a liberal position that sets it apart from orthodox schools of thought. Over three days, this Elbphilharmonie festival paints a portrait of Sufism through artistic means. That’s only natural considering that music has always played a central part in this movement. The festival brings together prominent representatives of various Sufi orders, who make up a transboundary cross-section, both stylistically and politically, of the Muslim world, from Pakistan and Turkey to Morocco. Here in western Europe, the most familiar of these are probably the »whirling dervishes« who dance themselves into a trance in »sema« rituals. Before that, the Safar Ensemble performs classical music from Afghanistan. On the second day, the NaghmaE-Israfil Ensemble demonstrates that women also have an important part to play in Sufism. In the evening, Mehdi Qamoum performs a »lila« ritual lasting several hours, with captivating music and tea breaks – this is how the Gnawa minority ethnic group in the Maghreb remembers its cultural roots. The festival’s closing concert opens with Persian love songs penned by the great Sufi poets Rumi and Hafez. The sons of the grand master Ustad Saami then bring their father’s ecstatic Qawwali singing style into the present with power and precision.

The Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble – founded by Thomas Hengelbrock and named after the famous Baroque architect – have long become established as important institutions in Hamburg’s musical life. Both orchestra and choir take historically informed performance with authentic instruments and compact line-up as a basis for making music with great energy, a firm grasp and palpable joy. The current concert series opens with Gluck’s Orpheus opera, which revolutionised the genre, and closes with Luigi Cherubini’s exuberant Requiem, which was fervently admired by Ludwig van Beethoven. And in between there is the traditional Christmas concert – this time in the Mozartsäle on the Moorweide – and a fascinating evening with the percussion formation »Repercussion« in St. Pauli Theater.

A master doesn’t simply fall to earth from heaven – not even a master of sacred music. Today, we tend to think of Johann Sebastian Bach as a solitary figure in music history, but he was actually deeply embedded in a network of family and artistic connections, which he refined with hard work and artistic talent. Three concerts now approach his work in different ways. They explore the Bach dynasty of musicians, put the focus on his predecessors and role models, and trace the legendary walk of more than 400 kilometres that Bach undertook to hear Dietrich Buxtehude. The concerts are performed by the singers and instrumentalists of the dynamic French ensemble Pygmalion under its founder and chief conductor Raphaël Pichon – who is, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, »the best Bach conductor of this time««. | 27

A BIENNIAL OF MUSIC FOR THE 21ST CENTURY It shocks, seduces and pierces the heart: the music of the 21st century is always an adventure. And it is never more at home than in a 21st-century concert hall. In the Elbphilharmonie, contemporary works are performed comparatively often, with great passion, and to an enthusiastic response. Contemporary music has now been given a new prominent platform: the ten-day biennial festival »Elbphilharmonie Visions«. After the first edition was postponed in 2021 because of COVID-19, the new format is now finally ready to go. Initiator and NDR chief conductor Alan Gilbert describes it as a »snapshot of the contemporary music world«. At the same time, the diverse programme clears up some long-outdated preconceptions: »Lots of people believe that contemporary music doesn’t speak to them. But the spectrum of contemporary styles is so huge that it’s impossible to make generalisations in this regard. Music is just as rich and diverse as humanity itself.« That is demonstrated beautifully by the opening concert featuring an epic oratorio by the Australian composer Brett Dean, which thematises humanity’s destructive influence on our planet. And a new work by the Swedish composer Lisa Streich, recipient of the Claussen-Simon Composition Prize, is also on the programme. REFLEKTOR ANGÉLIQUE KIDJO If you’ve heard her once, you’ll always recognise her voice, even three miles upwind – she’s more than loud enough. Angélique Kidjo was born and raised in the former French colony Benin in western Africa, and is probably the most influential singer from that continent. With four Grammys, she tops the shamefully short list of African musicians who have been awarded that prize. She has been one of the true stars of world music for more than 30 years, and she has been standing up for the interests of her continent, and of African women in particular, for just as long. So it’s only logical that she now – after numerous triumphant performances in the Elbphilharmonie – uses the carte blanche of her four-day »Reflektor« Festival here to present a predominantly female programme. In Dobet Gnahoré, Somi, Lura, Shungudzo and Oum, she has invited a whole host of the best young African female singers to Hamburg. Kidjo herself presents »Queen of Sheba«, a new, unreleased project featuring music by the French-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf thematising the encounter between the legendary Queen of Sheba and King Solomon. »Les mots d’amour« is a programme of songs Kidjo has developed with the French concert pianist Alexandre Tharaud. And for the grand finale, she is joined in the Grand Hall by most of the female artists featured in the festival under the name »African Women All-Stars«.

It’s impossible to sum up Barbara Hannigan’s career in just a few words – the Canadian live wire’s interests and specialisms are far too diverse for that. SWR called her »a multi-talented artist who constantly redefines herself«. She gained global fame as an extraordinary soprano, amazing audiences with breath-taking performances of vocally and emotionally challenging parts such as Alban Berg’s »Lulu«. In 2010, she picked up the conductor’s baton for the first time, and two years later she formed her own orchestra. By now she can be seen conducting leading orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra. Her diverse talents are reflected in her Elbphilharmonie appearances this season: beginning as »Waldvogel« (the woodbird) in a concert version of »Siegfried«, then with two accessibly curated symphonic programmes, and a staged multimedia concert.

TEODOR CURRENTZIS & MUSICAETERNA RESIDENCY AT THE LAEISZHALLE In early 2016, a year before the Elbphilharmonie opened, Teodor Currentzis made his first guest appearance in Hamburg with his orchestra musicAeterna. The audience was captivated by his charisma, powerful stage presence and radically subjective interpretations. The Hamburger Abendblatt reported with some amazement that »in the packed hall, the audience – and not just the surprisingly large number of younger-thanaverage listeners – went pretty wild by Hamburg standards«. Thanks to Currentzis’s creative drive and his close relationship with his musicians, who always play standing up, even the best-known works sound exceptionally fresh and new. Since his debut, the star conductor has appeared in Hamburg around 20 times – sometimes with other orchestras, but always at the Elbphilharmonie. Now he is returning with musicAeterna during Easter week to present a series of concerts in the place where it all began: the historic Laeiszhalle, which provides the ideal setting for what might almost be termed a »spiritual« musical experience. The ensemble will perform major choral and orchestral works such as Bach’s Mass in B minor, as well as sacred works by Sergei Rachmaninoff; rounding off the programme, there will also be chamber music concerts, workshops, master classes and film screenings.

HAMBURG INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL: LOVE »And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.« When Paul the Apostle wrote these words to the young congregation in Corinth, he could not have known he was penning the most popular wedding reading of all time. Nor could he have known that this would one day be taken as the thematic focus of the Hamburg International Music Festival. After exploring the themes of »faith« in 2020 and »hope« in 2021, this edition of the festival is all about – yes! – love. What else does our world need more of than love? Couples whose bonds are stronger than anything life can throw at them have inspired composers across the centuries: Romeo and Juliet, Pelléas and Mélisande, and Porgy and Bess. They and many others like them pervade the concerts in the (merry) month of May, when the Music Festival once again harnesses the vibrancy of the local scene and welcomes outstanding international guests such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the La Scala Theatre Orchestra from Milan and the Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam. And once again this year, there is a special focus on a composer with strong Hamburg ties: Alfred Schnittke, who was of German descent, moved from the Soviet Union to Germany after the fall of the Iron Curtain and lived in Eppendorf until his death in 1998. The »Love est. 2023« community project is an opportunity for Hamburg residents to get creative together. And the opening concert programme features a new work by the American composer Sean Shepherd with words by the poet Ulla Hahn. Supported by the Stiftung Elbphilharmonie and the Förderkreis Internationales Musikfest Hamburg The full programme is expected to be announced in November 2022.

While every concert at the Elbphilharmonie is a musical treat, our extensive programme also includes outstanding events that are not linked to a particular theme or subscription series. To name just a few: the great Sir John Eliot Gardiner leads the fabulous Concertgebouw Orchestra from Amsterdam in a Brahms cycle and underscores his reputation as an authority on historical performance practice by conducting his British ensembles in a performance of Bach’s Mass in B minor; the wonderful Cecilia Bartoli sings in Mozart’s final opera; the Vienna Philharmonic presents a programme of music from Eastern Europe under the baton of Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša, who also appears with the Bamberger Symphoniker. Other highlights include two concerts by the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden under Christian Thielemann, performing Mahler and Bruckner. The distinguished Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia from Rome has also chosen Bruckner for its upcoming performance. The Elbphilharmonie provides the perfect setting for a masterpiece of richly toned contemporary music – Gérard Grisey’s »Les espaces acoustiques«, and jazz fans can look forward to a performance by an all-star quartet.

NDR ELBPHILHARMONIE ORCHESTRA For more than 75 years, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra has travelled the world as nor thern Germany’s musical ambassador. Now, through the concert programmes it presents as orchestra in residence at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, it plays a major role in shaping the profile of its home venue on the river Elbe. Sounds and images from the world-famous concert hall are familiar to audiences throughout Germany and far beyond – not least thanks to the NDR’s concert broadcasts via video stream, radio and television, as well as on the orchestra’s online platforms. Under the direction of Chief Conductor Alan Gilbert, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra continues to expand its broad spectrum of activities in diverse and innovative ways. It performs works of all genres from the Baroque era to the present day, in formats ranging from symphony concerts to chamber music and club events, from one-hour concerts to festivals lasting several days. The members of the ensemble also have a strong sense of social responsibility and are actively involved in promoting young musical talent and supporting educational initiatives. In addition to its performances in Hamburg, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra regularly plays in Lübeck, Kiel and Wismar, and assumes a leading role at northern Germany’s major music festivals. Tours of Europe and North and South America, as well as regular visits to Asia, reflect and underscore the orchestra’s international standing. Founded in 1945 on the initiative of the British military government in Hamburg, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra – which was initially called the »Sinfonieorchester des Nordwestdeutschen 38 |
Rundfunks« (North-West German Radio Symphony Orchestra), and became the »NDR Sinfonieorchester« (NDR Symphony Orchestra) in 1956, following the division of the regional radio stations – laid the foundations for a new musical life in post-war northern Germany. The ensemble also performed in concert halls outside of Germany, and soon became an integral part of the international music scene. The various stages of the orchestra’s artistic development are closely linked to its notable chief conductors. The first of these, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, provided stability and continuity for over 25 years, during which time he shaped the unmistakable character of the ensemble. The intense 20-year collaboration with Günter Wand was also a significant period in the history of the orchestra. Wand, who served as chief conductor from 1982 to 1991 and was named honorary conductor for life in 1987, consolidated the ensemble’s international reputation. Above all, his benchmark-setting interpretations of the symphonies of Johannes Brahms and Anton Bruckner became its artistic calling card. Christoph Eschenbach took the helm in 1998, and in 2004 Christoph von Dohnányi continued the series of renowned chief conductors. From 2011 to 2018, Thomas Hengelbrock further shaped the history of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra with his passion for experimental interpretations and unconventional programming. The American conductor Alan Gilbert has been the resident orchestra’s chief conductor since 2019. Gilbert came to Hamburg from the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, but has been closely associated with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra for many years, as he was its principal guest conductor from 2004 to 2015.

Known for its energy, enthusiasm and artistic quality, Ensemble Resonanz is one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras. Its innovative programmes juxtapose the traditional with the modern: the musicians present lively interpretations of historic masterpieces and contemporary works, often revealing surprising connections and insights in the process. Ensemble Resonanz’s residency at the Elbphilharmonie includes the highly successful concert series »resonanzen«, which is sure to go down a storm in its 21st season. The ensemble also gives entertaining performances of classical and contemporar y music in concerts for children and in the context of our festivals. The democratically organised, 18-piece string orchestra regularly invites other artists to collaborate on specific projects; previous partners include the violist Tabea Zimmermann and the cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras. Since the 2018/19 season, the violinist and conductor Riccardo Minasi has been Ensemble Resonanz’s Artist in Residence. HAMBURG PHILHARMONIC STATE ORCHESTRA The Philharmonic State Orchestra is the orchestra of the City of Hamburg and plays at around 250 opera and ballet performances at the Hamburg State Opera every year. In addition to this, the orchestra organises the outstanding Philharmonic Concerts at the Elbphilharmonie, and its 140 musicians also perform in smaller, chamber music ensembles. Kent Nagano has been Chief Conductor of the Philharmonic State Orchestra and General Music Director of the Hamburg State Opera – a post once held by Telemann – since 2015. The California-born conductor of Japanese descent is an internationally renowned star of classical music and a charismatic, sensitive artist. Nagano has made a name for himself as an expert on the great orchestral works of the 20th century in which tone colours are of key importance. With this specific focus, coupled with his visionary understanding of music as a whole, he has expanded the Philharmonic State Orchestra’s already very broad stylistic range. Nagano and his musicians can look back on a long history and some highly distinguished predecessors: the orchestra originated in 1828 and has been conducted by legendary figures such as Tchaikovsky, Strauss, Mahler and Stravinsky. The Philharmonic is also familiar with new concert halls: the orchestra opened the Laeiszhalle with a gala concert in 1908.

SYMPHONIKER HAMBURG The »Symphoniker Hamburg – Laeiszhalle Orchestra« has been the resident orchestra of the first concert hall of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the Laeiszhalle, since 2017. With their chief conductor Sylvain Cambreling and their artistic director Daniel Kühnel they take the uniquely rich and important history of this renowned concert venue to new spheres and, with the self-conception of a vibrant cultural institution, they capitalise on the tradition of musical excellence and on the potential of updated roles for modern symphony orchestras. And that with great success: the Symphoniker Hamburg have received considerable acclaim far beyond the borders of their home city. The orchestra also played an important role in the conception of innovative national funding programmes for the German orchestral landscape. With innovative projects that are enthusiastically received by audiences and critics alike, the orchestra organises several subscription series and festivals – including the annual Martha Argerich Festival every June – and an unusually broad programme of music communication and education events. THE DEUTSCHE KAMMERPHILHARMONIE BREMEN The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen never does things by halves. »We select a composer and delve deep into their work,« says the orchestra’s Artistic Director Paavo Järvi. »How many orchestras have the luxury of being able to invest so much time?« Such commitment, coupled with skilled playing and great enthusiasm, results in profound cyclical performances that blow the dust off works by the big names of classical music. Having previously focussed on Beethoven, Brahms and Schumann, the Bremen-based collective is currently exploring the work of Joseph Haydn, the highly original composer and »father« of Viennese classicism. In its other concerts, The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen will be joined by highly distinguished guests such as the conductor Elim Chan; concertgoers can also look forward to a portrait concert dedicated to Shostakovich and his unusually scored Symphony No. 14, and to the young Russian violinist Alena Baeva in Richard Strauss’s rarely performed Violin Concerto.

OPERA IN CONCERT »Opera is a journey into your own soul«, says the acclaimed young countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński, who is involved in two opera productions in the Grand Hall this season. The Elbphilharmonie may not be an opera house – but you can still experience first-class music theatre here nevertheless. Without scenery or a velvet curtain, but with all the more musical intensity. The spectrum ranges from George Frideric Handel’s magnificent Baroque operas to minimal music by the American composer Philip Glass, who spectacularly suspended the sense of time in his hypnotic 1976 work about Albert Einstein. Each individual production boasts great voices: the incomparable Cecilia Bartoli performs in Mozart’s final dramatic work »La clemenza di Tito«, while Julia Lezhneva leads the cast of singers in his opera of love and betrayal »Così fan tutte«. Karine Deshayes takes on the title role in Bellini’s hit opera »Norma«, whose melodies Richard Wagner once described as »more beautiful than dreams«. Then, as Wagner’s »Siegfried«, Simon O’Neill swings the sword (musically) under Sir Simon Rattle, as part of a cast of soloists that is truly spectacular right down to the supporting roles. Magdalena Kožená embodies Handel’s magician »Alcina«, while Orliński as a Pharaoh takes us to ancient Egypt. Thomas Hengelbrock and his Balthasar Neumann Ensemble open the series with Gluck’s »Orfeo ed Euridice«, which stripped away all the Baroque airs and graces from the genre; and the NDR’s music festival closes with a swinging »Porgy and Bess«.

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC Once again this season, visitors to the Elbphilharmonie can experience the entire spectrum of contemporary music – including works by masters such as the dissolver of boundaries Helmut Lachenmann, and the mastermind of pulsating minimal music Philip Glass. An entire spotlight is dedicated to the Austrian composer Thomas Larcher (see page 21). And female voices are well represented with Kaija Saariaho, Sofia Gubaidulina, Rebecca Saunders and Isabel Mundry. International specialists in contemporary music will be performing, for example Ensemble Modern from Frankfurt and Ensemble Intercontemporain from Paris, both under conducting composers. Ready for a brief journey through time? When the concert hall doors close for these concerts, the audience is taken back a few centuries, to the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Highprofile specialist ensembles from all over Europe function as guides for the journey, accompanied by charismatic soloists such as Ian Bostridge and Magdalena Kožená. The music of Monteverdi, Handel and Bach is performed as faithfully as possible with historic instruments and an inquisitiveness and joy – as if the great composers of yesteryear had just handed them the freshly composed score.

The human voice is still the most versatile instrument of all – and the most intense. It expresses emotions, from rapturous love to bone-crushing grief, with a directness that often gets concertgoers instinctively sinking deeper into their seats. Or sitting mesmerised on the edge of those seats. There is a good reason why stars such as Cecilia Bartoli, Diana Damrau, Rolando Villazón and the Egyptian high-flyer Fatma Said have a legion of devoted fans who follow them around the world. These stars and many others can also be experienced in the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle in concert opera productions (see page 44) and, predominantly, in two other genres. Firstly, in thematic aria programmes presenting vocal highlights from operas and oratorios, often with full orchestral accompaniment. And secondly, in lieder recitals that are reduced to the essential and deliver a uniquely direct concert experience – with a stripped-down setting of singer and piano accompaniment that is practically unchanged since Schubert’s time. 50 |

Beatrice Rana is not just a master, but the »queen of the piano«, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung – the perfect profile for the challenging Chopin and Beethoven programme presented by the Italian pianist to open the Hamburg piano season. Numerous illustrious figures will be making their way to the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle over the course of that season, among them Mitsuko Uchida, Hélène Grimaud, Leif Ove Andsnes and the maverick Russian Grigory Sokolov. Also making their way to Hamburg are Daniil Trifonov, Igor Levit and Víkingur Ólafsson – pianists from the younger generation who have already long earned a place in the front row. Together with the stars of tomorrow, the U30-artists Seong-Jin Cho, Alexandre Kantorow and Jan Lisiecki, they deliver a programme that will leave even the most refined pianistic palate satisfied – with works ranging from Handel to the present day.

For Anne-Sophie Mutter, chamber music is both the most personal and the most emotional music of all. Like many great soloists, the world-famous violinist often returns to this highly charged form of musical expression – as on 12 October 2022, when she performs string quartet classics by Haydn, Mozar t and Beethoven together with exceptional young colleagues. And that is not the only treat in store for chamber music lovers this season: along with other all-star ensembles, led by the likes of violinist Midori and flautist Emmanuel Pahud, the programme also features the crème de la crème of the string quartet scene: Ébène, Emerson, Hagen, Jerusalem… Two extended weekends in 2023 promise to be stand-out events: in March, the Belcea Quartet, having already delighted the Hamburg audience with its fantastic Beethoven cycle, returns with a combination of (mainly) French and Russian repertoire; and in May, the Quatuor Modigliani – which, incidentally, was the first quartet ever to play in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall – is devoting itself to Franz Schubert’s works for string quartet. THE ELBPHILHARMONIE ORGAN With its visually and acoustically impressive organ in the Grand Hall, the Elbphilharmonie can boast an instrument that is in a class of its own. Additional allure is provided by the modern console allowing an almost unlimited combination of sounds, »special effects« such as an antiphonal division in the reflector above the stage, and the adjustable air feed. As a result, the Klais organ quickly became established as an essential stop in the tour schedules of international concert organists. In the current season, five of those take to the manuals, headed by the resident organist Iveta Apkalna, who performs music from her Latvian homeland. The gifted improvisor Wayne Marshall holds the same office in Manchester, Daniel Roth in Paris’ Saint-Sulpice Church (as successor to legends such as Charles-Marie Widor and Marcel Dupré), Susanne Kujala at the Sibelius-Akademie in Helsinki, and Christian Schmitt in Bamberg. The latter will be delivering a particular highlight in a lieder duo with star baritone Matthias Goerne.

JAZZ JAZZ IN DER ELBPHILHARMONIE Prominent figures from the US jazz world have traditionally been very well represented in the Elbphilharmonie. From the pianist Kenny Barron’s overdue venue debut and the reunion of four grandees who formed a short-lived supergroup in the mid-1990s to the groove guitar authority John Scofield, who slices up roots-rock gems using jazz silverware with the quartet »Yankee Go Home«. Ravi Coltrane honours the music of his parents, the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra pays a visit, and Wynton Marsalis returns. The Cuban piano legend Chucho Valdés is joined by the Yoruban Orchestra for a performance of his »La Creación«, while the pianistic powerhouse Hiromi brings with her a string quartet. WORLD MUSIC Sounds from ever y corner of the world are an important element in the Elbphilharmonie programme. To start the series, the amazing Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour returns with his band Le Super Étoile de Dakar. Over the course of the season, Chris Thile, Avi Avital and Hamilton de Holanda all present various aspects of the mandolin (see page 20). The DakhaBrakha quartet from Ukraine express their love of singing with archaically instrumented punk-folk. And overseeing all the other aspects of the world music programme this season is Angélique Kidjo, the great voice of modern, feminist Africa, who is curating her own »Reflektor« Festival (see page 30).

WORLD CLASSICAL MUSIC »Classical« music is not an exclusively European phenomenon – it is found all over the earth, wherever advanced civilizations have developed sophisticated art forms. The »World Classical Music« series and thematic spotlights such as the Sufi Festival in November (see page 24) provide an opportunity to discover and enjoy these musical forms. Opening the series, the royal court music orchestra performs music and dance from South Korea, followed by ancient sounds from Indonesia. The second half of the season features songs by West-African bards and storytellers, as well as mugham music from Azerbaijan, which is improvised in accordance with strict rules, and which is included on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. From the clubs and rehearsal rooms of this city and onto the Recital Hall stage: the »Made in Hamburg« series showcases popular artists from the local music scene in the Elbphilharmonie. It all kicks off with Tellavision, who describe their music as »hardware post pop«, followed by Guacáyo, who blend pop and reggae with social critique. The band Rhonda delivers some wonderfully casual neosoul, while Rosaceae and Kuoko are two exciting young female electro musicians. And the series is brought to a close by the post-punk band Erregung Öffentlicher Erregung.

EPHIL Electronic music is not only for dancing in clubs, it’s also an exhilarating experience in the concert format, sitting down and simply listening – as the »ePhil« series has been demonstrating for many years. The sound spectrum of these concerts is huge, and the musical worlds produced by the samplers, laptops and modular synthesizers infinite. In the new season, the series extends around the entire Elbphilharmonie for the first time. In the Grand Hall, Nils Frahm conjures minimalist poetic sounds, and Carsten Nicolai, aka Alva Noto, performs with a string orchestra on an elaborate stage. Icons such as Moritz von Oswald and Frank Bretschneider, and the exciting young musicians Maya Shenfeld and Rosaceae, perform in the Recital Hall and the Kaistudio.

LOVE EST. 2023. WIE WIR LIEBEN. A community project that’s as colourful as Hamburg itself: »Love est. 2023« brings together Hamburg residents with very different backgrounds, nationalities and life situations. Under the guidance of artists and teachers, they create a unique art project that captures the many facets of love in our time: some make music, while others write lyrics and poetry or study choreographies. After five months, everything is brought together and performed with Ensemble Resonanz in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall – as part of the Hamburg International Music Festival, which in 2023 is all about »love«.

Elbphilharmonie+-Workshop with Soumik Datta
From lecture concerts and film nights to visits to instrument builders’ workshops: the Elbphilharmonie’s accompanying programme opens up new, often surprising perspectives on the music in the concert hall. Linked to specific concerts, the Elbphilharmonie+ events look at fascinating themes relating to the programme, while also being full and rich experiences in and of themselves. Some are held in the Elbphilharmonie, while others take place in the cultural centres of the city districts and at special venues around Hamburg. This season the programme includes the popular formats »Story-Teller« – a fun, philosophical blend of speed-dating, good food and selected music – as well as »Insight Piano«, an entertaining lecture concert with star pianist William Youn and an exclusive Elbphilharmonie+ workshop with Soumik Datta Grand Piano Testin.
KLANGZEIT »Klangzeit« is the organic further development of the concert format »Distant Sounds«, which the Elbphilharmonie and Ensemble Resonanz have been presenting together for many years. What’s staying the same: the very special and highly accessible concert format, which invites people to listen to music and to sing songs in a relaxed setting. Dreaming and simply being there are expressly allowed. The Ensemble Resonanz musicians play short and varied pieces on their string instruments, and provide accompaniment for the singing. »Klangzeit« lasts around an hour, and a common theme always runs through the sequence of works and songs. What’s changing: from now on, the target audience includes not only people with dementia and their relatives, but also anyone who is seeking to experience live music in contexts other than conventional concert formats. They will also benefit from the fact that many Klangzeit events take place locally in the city districts, which means those who are keen to experience music in their neighbourhoods needn’t travel far.
