Our Picture-Perfect MOMENTS

As a new grandmother living on the opposite coast from my grandson, I cherish my visits and eagerly reach for my camera to capture the many smiles and precious milestones. These photos are priceless, preserving special moments that I can revisit anytime—and, of course, proudly show to everyone long after returning home.

In this issue of Connections, join us in celebrating nearly $90 million contributed toward We Will. The Englewood Health Campaign for Every Tomorrow. What an incredible achievement! These investments propel unprecedented advancements, allowing Englewood Health to recruit world-class clinical leadership, harness sophisticated technologies and expand access to care for over three million patients across 100 regional sites. On the following pages, you will look through the lens on just some of the life-changing stories made possible thanks to your support.

The Campaign now shifts focus over the next four years to support an exciting and comprehensive modernization program at Englewood Hospital. We will convert all existing double-occupancy rooms to state-of-the-art private suites, build a new 28-bed inpatient unit, and expand and upgrade eight surgical suites. We are already off to an amazing start. I am thrilled to announce two transformative gifts of $5 million each from The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation and The Kaplen Foundation. These leadership gifts launch the Foundation’s Builders Challenge to raise an additional $20 million by the end of 2026. All gifts of $100,000 or more will double the impact!

As we look ahead to a new year and the big-picture vision for Englewood Health’s future, we are most grateful for your continued support and generosity.

In FULL BLOOM Again

Hailing from Punjab, a land celebrated for its lush green fields and nourishing rivers, Jasjot Anand carried deep cultural roots and a love for nature when creating a home in the Garden State. Her crown jewel throughout the years: a flourishing backyard garden. Following a devastating stage-3 cancer diagnosis, Jasjot eventually stepped back into her cherished space. It was about more than resuming a hobby. Like the perennials that bloom brightly after a harsh winter, her return symbolized resilience and hope.

In those early, uncertain days, one persistent question consumed this life-long educator: how much time did she have left? She soon discovered renewed strength and optimism at The Lefcourt Family Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center at Englewood Health. Her expert care team, armed with the latest surgical robotics and a personalized treatment plan, guided her through every step of her journey to survivorship. Today, Jasjot is cancer-free and profoundly grateful.

The Snapshot: Philanthropy makes world-class cancer care possible by championing a patient-first philosophy and uniting essential services under one roof. In addition to acquiring advanced technology and attracting specialized talent, donor generosity funds integrative medicine, educational resources and essential financial programs. The strategic expansion of new multidisciplinary facilities in Fair Lawn and Jersey City reflects our strong commitment to ensuring convenient access to preventative care, diagnostics and life-saving treatment.

Writing A FRESH CHAPTER

John Lowe, a passionate author of novels, knows that a good story weaves together suspense, hope and resolution. His connection to Englewood Health begins with his mother’s service as a volunteer rolling fresh bandages to package and send to areas of combat during World War II. Years later, John was born at the hospital and recalls a tonsillectomy at age four. Fast-forward to an unexpected twist in 2023 when doctors discovered an abdominal aneurysm nearly five times its normal size and at serious risk of a fatal rupture. John’s chapter of uncertainty began.

Turning to the vascular care team at Englewood Health, John quickly found reassurance in their expertise and compassion. They performed a life-saving revascularization, an innovative and delicate surgical procedure that restores proper blood flow by creating a new path around the damaged artery. With successful surgery and recovery behind him, John is turning the page with optimism by planning his return to the ski slopes this winter.

The Snapshot: Donor support continues to raise the bar even higher for Englewood Health’s cardiovascular programs and services. Investments continue in new technologies and robotics, advanced treatments and top-tier physician recruitment, resulting in revolutionary care for patients. As just one example, for the second consecutive year, Englewood Health is the only New Jersey hospital to receive the highest rating by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for its Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) program, a rating exclusively tied to patient outcomes.

Taking a LEAD ROLE in a HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE

Brenda Thomas stepped into the Shirvan Family Live Well Center and accepted an exciting new lead role in the story of her life. A career actor, Brenda is energized by what she describes as a renaissance—an opportunity to explore improved wellness in a fun and personal way. She attended the Center’s 2023 open house and a nutrition class, where passionate instructors and educational value hooked her quickly. Today, Brenda participates in every activity that she can fit into her schedule. Zumba, chair yoga and cooking classes helped her shed more than 20 pounds, lowering her risk of developing chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension.

Thanks to Amy, Mark and Stanley Shirvan, the Live Well Center reduces chronic disease through free, innovative programs that focus on preventive care. A bilingual team empowers individuals with tools and strategies for building healthy lifestyle habits. We are grateful for the support that gives residents like Brenda a place to thrive, where lights shine brightly on all that is good for mind, body and soul.

The Snapshot: With a mission to transform healthcare delivery, philanthropic partners have fueled a strategy to bring high-quality, preventive care into the heart of our communities, ensuring access for all. Investments in infrastructure, personnel and programming deliver innovative care when, where and how patients need it. By reducing barriers and leading with a health equity philosophy, we are caring for our communities not only when they are sick but when they are well.

SIT DOWN The

After 21 years of marriage, Englewood Health’s Chief of Neurosurgery Dr. Kevin Yao and Judy Chen have mastered the art of partnership—whether raising their three teenage children, maintaining strong ties to their cultural heritage or serving as committee members for a project close to their hearts: the Asian Health and Wellness Center at Englewood Health. As plans get underway for this robust and comprehensive outpatient facility on the health system’s East Campus in Englewood Cliffs, we sat down with the couple to learn more about their personal interest in helping address the needs of Asian families throughout the community.

with both maternal and paternal grandparents

WHY DID YOU ACCEPT THE INVITATION TO SERVE ON THE COMMITTEE FOR THIS PROJECT?

Dr. Yao: As I sat with my own primary care doctor recently, I appreciated the level of care I received—personalized, thoughtful and seamless. It struck me how many in the Asian community do not have that same experience due a variety of reasons. Our own friends and family delayed care until it was too late simply because they could not navigate the system. This project is an opportunity to change that for our community.

Judy: Englewood Health is a remarkable institution and when they committed to this initiative, we knew we wanted to be a part of it. We hope to raise awareness and shine light on the barriers to care that exist within the Asian community so that every family can access exceptional care.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BARRIERS TO CARE?

Dr. Yao: Language and cultural differences create hurdles that many may not even realize. For instance, something as straightforward as scheduling a doctor’s appointment or a routine test can become incredibly difficult.

Judy: There’s also a trust factor. Many in the Asian community feel more comfortable seeking care from providers who understand their cultural background and health beliefs. Without that strong connection, they are less likely to pursue preventative care or screenings, which

ARE THERE SPECIFIC DISEASE CHALLENGES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY?

Dr. Yao: Absolutely. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes and certain cancers—like liver, stomach and nasopharyngeal cancers—are more prevalent in the Asian community. These conditions require specialized attention from clinicians who are skilled and laser focused on addressing the unique risks and needs of a very diverse population.

DO YOUR PERSONAL BACKGROUNDS FORTIFY A CONNECTION TO THIS INITIATIVE?

Judy: Yes, definitely. I was born in Taiwan, and my parents immigrated to the United States when I was ten. Although I’ve lived here for over 30 years, I remain closely tied to my roots and understand how difficult it can be to seek proper care when you are not from this country—even after many years.

Dr. Yao: That fact became even clearer for us during a recent trip to Taiwan when we needed to take our daughter to the emergency room. Despite Judy’s fluency in the language and local family support, we felt disconnected and overwhelmed by a system we found hard to navigate. It was a good reminder of the importance of a project like this.

WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THIS PROJECT’S POTENTIAL?

Judy: For me, the Center will be a place where Asian families feel safe and understood—a resource they can trust to meet their unique needs. It is fulfilling to know that we will bridge cultural and language barriers while encouraging families to take control of their health and build stronger futures.

Dr. Yao: As an American-born Chinese physician, I see this project addressing gaps in care. It is about more than access; it is also about delivering care that respects cultural differences and inspires confidence in the healthcare system. This Center will set a new standard for equity and wellness in our community.

FACES of Philanthropy

As co-chairs of We Will. The Englewood Health Campaign for Every Tomorrow, Dr. Ana Maria Burga, Mark Shirvan and Judy Taub Gold share a unified vision: to advance world-class healthcare and strengthen the community they love. Each brings a unique perspective, deep ties to Englewood Health and an unwavering commitment to making an impact for generations to come.

When Ana Maria Burga, MD, arrived at Englewood Health for her residency in 1999, she discovered more than a hospital. She found what would eventually become her second home. Today, as Englewood Health’s first female Chief of Pathology and Chief Wellness Officer, Dr. Burga leads a team dedicated to advancing innovation, patient outcomes and compassionate care.

Born to Peruvian immigrants, Dr. Burga drew early inspiration from her father’s dedication as a physician and her mother’s devotion to raising five daughters. A large, strong family taught her the importance of supporting one another and giving back. For Dr. Burga, philanthropy is as vital to high-quality healthcare as a microscope is to her lab. “I believe that as physicians, we carry an obligation to help support this community, which in many ways is like a great big family, that goes beyond our clinical expertise. Philanthropy comes back to our patients ten-fold. It is a prime reason why I choose to lend my time to this very important campaign,” says Dr. Burga.

As a successful businessman in the lumber, building materials and construction industry, Mark Shirvan understands the powerful benefits of development—and for him, that includes creating new healthcare delivery points throughout the community he calls home. Mark credits his parents for instilling in him a deep appreciation for philanthropy. “My mom and dad felt a responsibility to make an impact and through their example, I learned that we all can do something to make a difference,” says Mark.

He and his wife, Amy, grew up in Tenafly and are long-time supporters of Englewood Health with a personal connection to its bold vision. Amy is a cancer survivor and the couple recognizes firsthand the importance of award-winning care close to home. He is enthusiastic about serving as co-chair for this next phase of the campaign because of a desire to continue enhancing the patient experience. “When Amy was diagnosed, our family’s world turned upside down. For the life-saving care she needed, we would have traveled to the ends of the Earth. I want all families to be able to conveniently access state-of-the-art care.”

Judy Taub Gold, a life-long Tenafly resident, looks forward to serving as campaign co-chair alongside Dr. Burga and her childhood friend Mark. When initially invited to take on the role, she felt honored but also reflective. That evening, a vivid dream brought clarity—her father spoke to her about the values he and her mother cherished throughout their lives: supporting others, a strong community and access to exceptional healthcare. Judy woke up confident in her decision to serve.

As a mother of two grown children and part of a large, close-knit family, Judy draws inspiration from the next generation who she believes is very important. “We’ve seen the power of a shared commitment. The transformation at Englewood Health over the last five years alone proves all that is possible,” she says. “Now, as my father reminded me in my dream, it is time to think even further ahead—for our children and their children. Let’s ensure that we deliver the very best care for all families for generations to come.”

KNOW the PROS

For Natasha Baron, MD, her interest in medicine began as a child growing up in the Philippines. Much of her childhood was spent in the hospital alongside a younger brother with disabilities where she observed the dedication of doctors.

At a young age, she grew into the role of his caregiver, supporting around-the-clock care and helping navigate many ongoing challenges.

“I made him my responsibility and consider it a blessing—giving to someone who was never able to communicate or give anything back. I still carry those lessons with me,” explains Dr. Baron.

Today, as chief of psychiatry at Englewood Health, Dr. Baron prioritizes individuals over their diagnoses, empowering them to navigate their journeys without stigma. This unique

perspective is shared by a skilled professional team who collaborate across the continuum with empathy and a patient-first philosophy.

Central to this effort is the new Behavioral Health Access Center, which serves as a hub for connecting patients to essential services such as psychiatry, psychotherapy, acute care and wellness programs. By streamlining clinical access and optimizing resources, the Access Center helps ensure patients receive timely support for improved outcomes.

With behavioral health a top priority for the health system, philanthropic investments are continuing to expand the program and meet growing community demands.

The Gregory P. Shadek Behavioral Care Center, created through a leadership gift from Pat and Larry Shadek, scheduled over 15,000 patient visits in 2024 alone. While the Behavioral Health program accepts insurance to provide broad access care for patients throughout the region, donor generosity continues to drive many insurance agnostic programs for those without insurance.

Philanthropy resonates deeply with Dr. Baron, shaped by her early experiences working in

a government hospital in her native country. There, she often sought external funding to help patients access critical care and coached families on advocating for the resources they needed. “The contrast between where I began my career and this exceptional health system is extraordinary. Donor generosity empowers our team to deliver the highest level of care to all patients, regardless of circumstances. That is incredibly fulfilling,” she reflects.

“Donor generosity continues to grow our behavioral health program, delivering life-saving care through multiple channels and maximizing reach to make a real impact on families.” -
