1999 When Jill Fader and her late husband, Paul, organized the first Walk for Awareness in 1999, there were no smartphones or social media to spread the word. The couple set out to make a difference inspired by Jill’s breast cancer diagnosis and in appreciation of her devoted doctor, retired Englewood Health Chief of Pathology Miguel Sanchez, MD. Their passion brought together a few hundred participants for that first event to raise over $85,000 to support breast cancer patients receiving treatment at Englewood Hospital. In 2025, this much-loved fundraising event will be named to honor the couple who started it all.

The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center is recognized by U.S. Congress as a model for the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease and performs more than 50,000 clinical breast exams and over 32,000 mammograms annually.

Joanne Ehrlich knows firsthand that life can turn upside down following a cancer diagnosis. That understanding drove her to launch Heel the Soul in 2014 as a resource and support program at Englewood Health. It began as a heartfelt effort to personally deliver comfort bags to women in the hospital battling gynecological cancer. Quickly, it grew into a far-reaching mission to bring hope, ease the burden of treatment and offer light in the darkest moments. Fully funded through donor support, Heel the Soul’s first event welcomed 160 guests who raised $90,000 for patients in need.

In the span of a decade, Heel the Soul has touched more than 5,000 patients and now serves both women and men. The program provides transportation, guests stepped out for Heel the Soul’s healthy meals, wellness 10th anniversary celebration co-chaired by therapies and more— Joanne Ehrlich and Josh Albom on May 9, 2024. helping patients heal in mind, body and spirit.

d r c o Re When the pressure is high and every second counts, Englewood Health’s Emergency Department delivers— thanks to a fast, skilled and cohesive team led by Chief of Emergency Medicine Erik Chu, MD. His hands-on, collaborative leadership empowers every team member—from the front desk to discharge—to communicate, think critically and take action.

As a result, these high-performing professionals treated over 60,000 patients in 2024, setting new records while earning top national honors.

Englewood Health consistently outperforms national benchmarks. The Emergency Department maintains industry-leading patient evaluation times and an exceptionally low left-without-being-seen (LWBS) rate of less than one percent. This is a

g n i k e a -Br quality metric reflecting efficient access, short wait times and strong patient trust. In 2024, the team also earned two American Heart Association Gold Awards for stroke care and cardiac resuscitation, recognizing their commitment to excellence and life-saving expertise.

Philanthropy makes this high level of performance possible and helped build this state-of-the-art facility, which opened in 2009. The project was fully underwritten through Lifeline to Tomorrow— Our Campaign for an Emergency Care Center which raised more than $30 million. Sustained donor support continues to raise the bar on emergency care, driving the team to treat more patients, deliver innovative treatment and achieve stronger outcomes.

Irving Gutarra arrived at the Englewood Health Emergency Department after falling from a seizure. A radiologist’s sharp eye led to an unexpected diagnosis of thyroid cancer. As an autistic adult who is non-verbal, Irv requires 24-hour supervision. He and his family depended on access to compassionate and lifesaving care that also centered on comfort and familiarity. The team arranged for his father to be right by his side before and after surgery—so when Irv woke up, he immediately saw a reassuring face. Irv and his family are beyond grateful for his entire clinical team.

At just 39, Marianela “Lulu” Gonzalez was planning the wedding of her dreams when a routine screening at The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center at Englewood Health changed everything. Diagnosed with breast cancer, she made the courageous choice to undergo a bilateral mastectomy—determined to move forward with strength. With expert care and unwavering support, Lulu walked down the aisle just months later, celebrated with loved ones and danced into her next chapter, cancer-free and incredibly grateful.
