Saving the Environment

I have lived for 4,733,640 minutes in my life. Yet litter surrounds me. This is the time to change that. It is clear that people should start taking better care of our environment. Our air is becoming more polluted, we are destroying forests, and ruining our oceans. This must change!

In truth, our air is becoming more and more polluted. For example, Rosenlof, an expert on space says, “Our concern is that by 2050, we may double the amount of rockets going up. That may increase pollution.” We need to stop this. Another reason is that polluting the air is bad for us. It will give us warm air and we don’t need this. It can cause high temperatures and extreme heat to raise levels of pollutants like ozone and particulate matter. Air quality advisories almost always accompany hot weather, and our increased electricity usage to keep things cool during high heat episodes only contributes to greater emissions and primary pollution. Lastly, there are many ways to help stop polluting the air. You can stop using cars and start riding bikes to school or even walk. This proves that polluting the air is bad for the environment.

You will soon discover that we are destroying our forests. For example, people are cutting animals' homes! Birds are all dying and losing homes by people cutting trees. People don’t know what harm this is doing to our environment, but you do. Also, can you realize that trees help us breathe? If

we cut all the trees in NJ, then we won’t be able to breathe. We will die immediately. Finally, did you know that land expert Maria Wane said, “Cutting trees can affect ecosystems, climate, and even increase risk for zoonotic diseases spreading to humans.” People can die because of this. I must say that we have to do something about this problem. It will soon be clear that we are also ruining our oceans. For example, every second sea animals die from pollution in our water. It’s ruining our ecosystem. Fish, seabirds, sea turtles, and marine mammals can become entangled in or ingest plastic debris, causing suffocation, starvation, and drowning. Another reason that overfishing is reducing fish populations. Fish are being caught faster than they can reproduce, hindering their ability to maintain healthy population numbers. Finally, ocean expert Hailey Kim says, “Throwing plastic bags in the ocean harms sea turtles.” Many sea animals die because of plastic in the ocean. In the ocean, plastic pollution impacts sea turtles, whales, seabirds, fish, coral reefs, and other marine species and habitats. In fact, scientists estimate that more than half of the world's sea turtles and nearly every seabird on Earth have eaten plastic in their lifetimes. For certain, throwing plastic in our ocean harms everyone. As you can see, it’s now or never to stop pollution! We need to help our community and save the planet! This is why we need to stop destroying our forests, polluting the air, and ruining our ocean. We need to take better care of our environment!

Soccer Champ

“Kathy! Wake up!” My mom said. “Yawn! Coming!” I said. I ran downstairs following the smell of pancakes. “Good morning!” My Dad said. “Good morning my soccer star. You have a big game today. This determines if you’re going to be the state champions so eat up!” Mom said. I took a whiff of my mom’s famous pancakes. “Do I have to go to her soccer game?” My older brother Liam said. “Yes. Now finish eating your pancakes.” My Dad said. My soccer team won every single game and now we are in the finals. If we win the finals then we will be the state champions! I sat down and poured maple syrup on my pancakes. “Mom, do you think we will win?” I said. “Yes.” Mom said. “Go change sweetie.” “Okay.” I said. I went upstairs and got out my soccer jersey. I also got my shin guards, and soccer socks. I put my clothes on. I’m a bit nervous but I think I have the best team ever. I go downstairs and get my bag. “Mom! I’m

ready!” I said. I put on my cleats. “Ok. Robert! Liam! Come, We’re going now!” Mom said. We all piled into the car. “We’re here!” Dad said after a couple of minutes. “Good luck pumpkin!” Dad said. “Good luck sweetie!” Mom said. “Thanks!” I said. “Kathy, you have to win. If you lose, you’ll make me look bad. So win!.” Liam said. I roll my eyes at him. “Liam! Don’t say that.”Mom said. “But mom. It’s true!” Liam said. I shut the car door. I saw my coach getting the soccer balls out of the bag. I run over to him. “Kathy! Glad you can make it!” Coach Bryan said. “Kathy!” Someone said behind me. I turn around. “Lily!” I said. Lily is my best friend. “Here girls. Pass the ball and shoot on me. Soon, the whole team arrived. “Ok. Kathy play striker, Lily play left wing.” Coach Bryan said. “1,2,3 Falcons!” My team said. I ran out to my position on the field. “Tweeeeeeeet!” The whistle blew. I passed to center mid. She passed back to me. I go pass defense and shoot, I score! Soon we were tied. 30 seconds left on the clock. Lily passed to me. I did a fake and I shot as hard as I could. But then someone on the other team

elbowed me in the face. I fell then opened my eyes. I saw my team cheering and the ball in the goal. Then the buzzer buzzed. I scored! We won! Lily came over to me and helped me up. “You scored the winning goal!” Lily said. All my teammates ran over to me and hugged me. I felt like a star. Coach Bryan congratulated me. “Great job! We are the State Champions because of you!” Coach Bryan said. The Referee gave us our trophy. We took a picture and I was holding the trophy. I ran to my mom and dad. “You did it! You scored the winning goal” Mom said. “I’m proud of you.” Dad said. “You actually weren’t so bad.” Liam said. I smiled a huge smile. My team was the State Champions and I scored the winning goal.

School Problems

“BBRRIINNGG!” The bell rung. Ugh I was late for school again. I rushed down the busy road all the way to school. When I got to class, we were already doing math. Mr. Woodfred was writing on the whiteboard. “Fingernails, you are late again.” Mr. Woodferd said. Fingernails is what he called me because I bite my fingernails. “Mr. Woodfred, my name is Lily. Lily Andrew.” I said. “Ok. Lily… Whatever.” He said. I sat down at my seat. Mr. Woodfred is the worst teacher ever. He calls kids nicknames and not their real name. The only kid who he calls their real name is “The Perfect Fiona.” She’s a show off. I wish I had a teacher like Mr. O’Connoll or Mrs. Boyle. But I got stuck with Mr. Woodfred. The new girl, Alyssa Tubman, raised her hand. “Mr. Woodfred?” She said. “Yes Newbie.” Mr. Woodfred said. Newbie is Alyssa’s nickname. “The answer is 156… and also my name is Alyssa.” Alyssa said. “Sure. You got it right.” Mr. Woodfred said. My best friend, Raya Marsh, whispered to me. “This is so boring.” “I know.” I said. “Mr. Snorefred.” Raya said. I

giggled. “Fingernails, come up to the board.” Mr. Woodfred said. I gulped. Had he seen me?

“Answer this question please.” Mr. Woodfred said. I looked at the whiteboard. It said: 8/15 + 19/304/5 =. “Um… We didn’t learn this. “ I said. “I just explained it to you but you weren’t listening. Will someone else solve this problem?” Mr. Woodfred said. “Fiona?” “Mr. Woodfred, 8/15 + 19/30 - 4/5 = 0.6666666666” Fiona said. “Good job Fiona!” Mr. Woodfred said. She smirked at me. I rolled my eyes. Soon, the summer came and we got let out of school.

“Finally! No more Mr. Woodfred!” I said to Raya. Raya smiled back at me. Fiona came up from behind us being nosy. “ I personally think Mr. Woodfred was the best teacher ever.” She said.

“Yeah, because you get special treatment.” I said. “Girl, chill!” Raya whispered into my ear. I took a deep breath. “Go mind your own business.” I said. “Hmph. Whatever!” Fiona said. She strutted away.

“I heard Mr. Woodfred is going to teach 5th grade next year.” Raya said. “I don’t want to think about that yet. It’s summer!” I said. The next school year, me and Raya were opening the letters to see who’s class we’re going to be in. “3,2,1!” We both said. “Mr. Woodfred!” Bruh.

The Gift That is Our Earth

The earth is a gift we’re given to care for. We care for electronics, money and possessions. We should at least care for the earth a bit more! In my opinion, people should stop hurting the environment. It destroys animals' homes, it causes pollution and it causes global warming. Clearly, it ruins animals' habitats. 1.9m square kilometers of land that belonged to animals have been lost since 2000. That's about eight times the size of the United Kingdom! When an animal loses the natural home or habitat that it needs to survive, its numbers decline rapidly. also If we don't help the animals now and they become extinct, the world will lose all its beauty and happiness! As you can see, it wrecks creatures' shelters.

Without a doubt, it causes the air to be contaminated. “Industrial pollution and the discarding of

plastic waste must be tackled for the sake of all life in the ocean,” said David Attenborough, a broadcaster and natural historian. To illustrate, pollution causes more than 9 million premature deaths every year. Research also shows that pollution can make us feel sad and depressed. This illustrates that it makes the atmosphere polluted.

I am certain that hurting the environment causes the world to overheat. “The more we heat up the planet, the more it costs all of us, not just in money, but in colossal famines, displacements, deaths, and species extinctions, as well as in the loss of some of the things that make this planet a blue-green jewel, including its specialized habitats from the melting Arctic to bleaching coral reefs.” said Rebecca Solnit. And according to NOAA's 2021 Annual Climate Report the combined land and ocean temperature has increased at an average rate of 0.14 degrees Fahrenheit ( 0.08 degrees Celsius) per decade since 1880. In addition, our oceans are dying. Half of the world's coral reefs have died in the last 30 years. This proves, it causes the planet to get hot.

As can be seen, everyone should quit harming the earth. It hurts animals' homes, it causes the air to be polluted and it causes earth to warm up. I realized that after studying for a long time hurting the environment hurts the earth. You should stop hurting the world.

Emi and Rocky

The minute I open my eyes, I see a girl next to me. I can’t tell if she’s happy or sad. She has a frown smile. Someone says “Hi Emi.” “You said I choose my dog.” I found out the girl’s name is Rocky. Her mom answers, “I know, but isn’t this dog cute?”

“Yeah I guess,” Rocky agrees. The woman who is Rocky’s mom takes me to a van which looked like it had not been cleaned in a very long time. We arrive to an old looking house. Rocky takes me to her room. It’s very pretty. She shows me a very pretty bed that she said was mine. I felt filled with joy. She then says, “I have to go to bed.”

I was a little upset but I remembered it’s fine. Then suddenly….THUD!!!!!! I look to the left, and thankfully Rocky’s ok, but she’s shocked. She’s shaking so I go to her. I lick her. She says,“Emi, I’m going downstairs. You can follow me or not.” And so I follow her. I’m scared to go downstairs but I go anyway. I look up at Rocky. She looks like she wants to yell out and cry, but she can’t. I can’t blame her…seeing her mother with blood on the floor can be kind of hard. Rocky calls 911 at this point crying like crazy. The ambulance finally arrives. Rocky goes with her in the ambulance as I wait at home, nervous for what might happen. Then the doctors at the hospital tell her the great news! They tell her with a lot of surgery and help she will recover. Rocky jumps with joy. A few weeks later, her mom made a full recovery! Rocky and I and even Rocky’s mom are all now a happy family!!!

Which would you pick if you were at a shoe store looking for sneakers: Nike or Adidas? Here we will battle between Nike and Adidas to see which is better.

Nike is better than Adidas. They have amazing and popular shoes like Nike Air Force 1 and Nike Air Max. These are available in basically all colors. They are worn by stars like Michael Jordan. They are much more comfortable than Adidas. Also Adidas is less affordable than Nike. NIke prices are much better. Nike has so many types of sport shoes for every type of sports activity. They also have cool clothes.

Adidas is better than Nike because the company is a good sports shoes company and makes those sports shoes comfy to run in as you are playing the sport you are doing. Also, Adidas shoes are more durable and lighter to wear which allows you to run faster on the ground. Adidas is also better because they have soft soles on the bottom for you to run quietly. Adidas shoes are so cool!

LOGLINES FOR FICTION

Sitting down with a storybook is one of the only times when you get to immerse yourself in a world you can hold in your hands yet can’t fully comprehend. Literacy is both a joy and a passion, but it must be executed well. In this excerpt of my knowledge on writing, I would like to share a nonfiction---about fiction!

Comingupwithan Idea

Before you go ahead pouring all your thoughts onto a type or laptop, you must first be sure that you’re not just writing for the sake of writing. You should have a unique, never-been-done-before idea that can really interest readers. I like to think of finding an idea like being on a cooking game show. You want to come up with something original and surprise the judges, but you may want to stick to some recipes you already know for certain parts of your meal. Find something that you see yourself going to a library and picking up thinking

“Ooh, this looks interesting.”

Whatisalogline?

Because you only get so much time to hook a potential publisher/agent, you have to come up with a logline. This is a short 1-2 sentence summary of your idea that authors use to build up their book. The logline is comprised of 1-5 things, your level, POV,tense, genre, and lastly, your idea. Not all loglines contain the first four elements, but the idea is always present. Remember, thiscannot giveawaytoomuchofastory, orelsethere’snouseturningthe page.

A level is your audience’s age group, whether it’s P for preschoolers to 2nd graders (this includes picture books and junior chapter books), MG (Middle-Grade) for slightly more advanced readers 9-13 years old, or YA (Young adult) for 14+. The adult level is far different than MG and YA, yet loglines for them are quite similar.

Genre

Genre is like a special flavor that gives your story a unique taste. It helps us categorize and understand different types of stories. Imagine a giant treasure chest filled with different types of books, each with its own label. Adventure, mystery, fantasy, and science fiction are just a few examples of genres. Adventure stories take us on thrilling journeys, mystery stories challenge us to solve puzzles, fantasy stories whisk us away to magical realms, and science fiction stories imagine exciting future worlds. There are also many more types of fiction that don’t involve ghouls or time-travel. Realistic and Spiritual fiction are stories that could take place in the real world, but haven’t (until now.) Choosing a genre for your story helps you decide what kind of adventure you want to take your readers on and what kind of emotions you want them to feel. So, let your imagination soar and explore the wide range of genres to find the one that suits your story best!

POV

One important aspect to master is the point of view. Point of view refers to the perspective from which a story is told, and it can have a powerful impact on your readers. Let's dive into it! Imagine you're reading the popular book series "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" by

Level

Jeff Kinney, where the story is narrated in the first person through the personal diary entries of Greg Heffley. This gives you direct access to Greg's thoughts and emotions, creating a strong connection between the reader and the character. Now, let's explore a different point of view. In the enchanting book "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio, multiple points of view are used, allowing you to see the story unfold through the eyes of different characters, such as August, Via, and Miranda. This technique helps you understand their unique perspectives and builds empathy. It’s called multiple POV. Another fascinating point of view is found in the classic book "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White, where the story is told in third person, providing an objective view of the interactions between Wilbur the pig, Charlotte the spider, and other farm animals. One final example is the Harry Potterseries by Joanne Rowling, which is told in the third person like Charlotte’sWebbut with the slight (yet not-so slight) difference of how the main character is the one being followed by this third person. This is called close third person, and it is found when the storyteller is not a character, but follows the main character’s actions primarily. By mastering different points of view, you'll add depth and variety to your storytelling, captivating your readers with every word. Find your story’s POV by choosing if the main character would be better off as the narrator or just the action’s focus with the words coming from a disembodiment.

Tense

Tense refers to the timeframe in which a story takes place and helps to establish the sequence of events. Let's explore it

further! Imagine you're reading the popular book series "Magic Tree House" by Mary Pope Osborne. The stories are mostly written in the past tense, describing Jack and Annie's adventures as they travel through time. For example, you might read, "Jack and Annie stepped into the magical treehouse and found themselves in ancient Egypt." This past tense usage allows readers to understand that the events have already happened. In "The Maze Runner" series by James Dashner, a group of teenagers find themselves trapped in a mysterious maze with no memories of their past. The present tense usage in the series creates a sense of urgency and keeps the readers engaged in the fast-paced and thrilling events. For instance, you might read, "Thomas runs through the maze, desperately trying to find an escape route." This present tense style immerses the reader in the action and adds to the suspenseful atmosphere of the story. This present tense usage creates a sense of immediacy and makes the reader feel as if they are right there with the characters. So, young writers, whether you choose to write in the past tense or the present tense, be consistent throughout your story to maintain clarity and engage your readers. Get ready to transport your readers through time and space with your vivid storytelling!

Tense and POV are quite close in which they change almost every pronoun in your story, yet do nothing to the plot. Or do they? Pointofviewandtenseinfictionhavethepowertoevokestrong emotionsinreaders. The chosen perspective allows readers to connect deeply with characters, fostering empathy and emotional engagement. Tense amplifies the intensity of the story, immersing readers in its unfolding moments.

Idea

An idea is truly one of the toughest parts of storytelling. Just

write for the sake of writing. You have to have passion, you have to be willing to “Kill your babies” (get rid of a part of your story you’ve gotten too attached to as it may impact the quality of the rest of the story,) and most importantly, you have to trust yourself. Trust that you’ll know you’re adding in the right secondary character, or making the right fight scene, and if you don’t, get rid of it. I, myself, have thrown out crumpled up papers of ideas countless times, even months into the process. And, no, it’s not a waste, because you learned something along the way. Its ok to change your idea based on another element, but you have to believe that you can write a story. Going back to section 1, find a short sentence you’d see on the back of a book and really be excited to read. No matter how many stories you’ve heard about J.K. Rowling and how she scribbled Harry Potter on a collection of napkins, no book was written in a week. Sure, the first draft of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was written in three days, but it was composed by a man of great experience and real-world troubles of his own. If you go outside to observe nature for a book, that’s time put into it. If you have trouble getting ready for a test and you use your experience to make your character feel the same way, that’s time put into your story. Everything you see, do, or say doesn’t have to go into a notepad, but keep in mind that the most crazy dragon-fight scene could come from an argument with a sibling, as long as you’re passionate and up for the challenge.

Putting it all together

Now that you have all the elements of your logline, it’s time to connect the dots. Start with your level, then your genre and POV, and your tense (if it changes the story heavily. If it doesn’t, leave it out). The bulk of the logline should be your idea. Here’s an example

of a logline using one of my own crafts:

Amiddle-grademinorfantasytoldinfirst-personaboutaboy beingfollowedaroundbyaribbonandagirlofwhichhelaterfinds outistrappedinherownmind. Hegoesonaquestinhermindto freeher,beingchallengedbybraveryandlogicitself.

Here’s a logline using just idea: Anorphanedboyenrollsinaschoolofwizardry,wherehelearns thetruthabouthimself,hisfamilyandtheterribleevilthathaunts themagicalworld.

I think you can guess what story that one belongs to (hint: you’re a wizard, Harry!).

Now that you have a general aspect of this intro quotient to a story, I hope you take the time to really find the outline of your story or just note what the logline could’ve been for a book you’ll read yourself!

A Trip to Florida

One day my family and my best cousin Michelle that I always travel with and I were going to Florida. Michelle was going on another plane. We had to give our luggage to Michelle because her plane let her have free check-in and our plane was going to make us pay money for our luggage. I went on my plane and it was so freezing cold. I had a hard time sleeping but finally slept only 30 minutes. Then finally 3 hours later I arrived. I said, “Hooray! We are here!” It was super late and by the time we got to our house, it was 1am! I knew my cousin’s plane was cancelled but I remembered we gave our luggage to my cousin so I said, “Oh no!” My mom said that she was going to be riding in her car for 18 hours to get to Florida! That night we had to wear our clothes from the trip as our pajamas. I couldn’t even brush my teeth! Yuck!

The next day Michelle arrived around 4pm. I felt so excited because now my vacation could really start. We stayed in a nice house. Our house there even had a pool in the backyard! My mom said Michelle and I could go swimming now that I finally had my swimsuit and could brush my teeth. The rest of our vacation was perfect. I think the next trip I take, I will be sure to have my luggage with me!

Softball Star

‘’Chirp!’’ ‘’Chirp!’’ ‘’ Ava wake up!’’ yelled Ava’s mom. Today it was Ava’s first day of softball. She was going with her friend Emma. After Ava got ready, she ran down the stairs and dropped herself down on a chair. She ate her PB&J sandwich and grabbed her softball bag and walked out the door. ‘’ Have fun!’’ said Ava’s mom. Emma was waiting for her. They started to walk toward the field and when they got there, they were split into teams to practice. Sadly, Ava and Emma were on different teams. Ava’s team batted first. But Ava didn’t really know how to bat so she just tried her best. When it was Ava’s turn, the pitcher threw the ball, and Ava tried to hit the ball, but all she did was hit the ball backwards. After a lot more throwing, catching and batting, the practice was FINALLY over.

Ava and Emma waited quietly for their parents. When they both saw their parents, they ran to the car.’’How was practice Ava?’’ asked Ava’s mom. ‘’Hard!’ answered Ava. The rest of the drive was complete silence. After many practices, Ava’s got much better. Tomorrow was her team’s first game. Ava was nervous, but she felt ready. The moment she woke up in her comfy bed, she brushed her teeth and changed into her uniform. She rushed to eat her breakfast and ran with Emma to the game. First they warmed up by tossing balls with a partner. After that, they got ready for the game. Emma was really good at softball so the coaches picked Emma to be one of the catchers. A catcher is the player that stands behind the batter and tries to catch the ball that the pitcher throws. After many innings, it was tied up. Ava was batting next and on her third strike…….TINK!

Ava hit a bomb! Right after that moment, she knew what to do. She ran as hard as she could. The other team scrambled to get the ball. Ava jumped on first base…….then second….she heard her team cheer on for her. Finally, she passed third base as one of the players from the other team threw the ball narrowly to their catcher. The catcher caught the ball and tried to tag Ava. But Ava dodged the ball quickly, and she slid onto home plate!!! ‘’WOO!! GO AVA!’’ her team yelled!

Ava felt like she was flying. That was Ava’s highlight of the week.

TheCaribbean

Today you’ll learn all about the Caribbean! You’ll learn that the Caribbean has only two seasons in the entire year! Now let’s dive in the Caribbean!

The Caribbean

1.

2. The animals that live in the Caribbean usually have strange names, for a couple of examples are a bird called a Bananaquit, and another would be Brown Booby.

The Caribbean has only two seasons because because the tropics get more exposure to the sun. Because of all that sun, the tropics don't experience the kind of seasons the rest of Earth does.

3.

The islands that make up the Caribbean are Jamaica, Grenada, the Bahamas, Saint Lucia, Aruba, Turks and Caicos islands, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Anguilla.

The Space Disaster: Part 2

The End

The Moon Trip

Once upon a time there was a 10 year old kid who wanted to go to space. His name was Shalev and he wanted to invite some of his friends. The friends’ names were Simeon, Pax and Shahar *not Shalev*. So he built his rocket ship and he and his friends went to space. They saw the moon. They thought it would be cool to check it out. So Shalev landed on the moon . There he saw a moon rock. He put it in the rocket ship and continued exploring. After a long walk around the moon he saw a ALIEN. It was green with yellow eyes. We were able to talk with him as we translated his Alien language into English. We wished him well and returned to Earth in our rocket ship. Home at last!

Fantasy in Reality

“So do you want to go to the library to study and do homework with me? We can also borrow some books, and besides, we have the whole afternoon today!” said Isabelle. “Sure! Oooh, I have and idea! Let’s go to Starbucks after school and have drinks! I heard they recently added boba coffee. Luckily, we can drink a little coffee anyway since we’re 14!” I said excitedly. “OMG, Jennie, that’s so SUEY!” Isabelle cheered. I laughed and we did our “Ronaldo Handshake.” “SUEY!!” Isabelle and I said in the end. “Oops! Gotta go to class!” I exclaimed,. “Hey, yeah, me too!” said Isabelle. We give each other a quick wave and dash off to class-I go to French, Isabelle to Math. Ms. Blanc discusses about Joan of Arc while I secretly text Isabelle and try to write down my notes. The rest of my classes fly by until the final bell rings. I head to my locker to put away my books. Just as I grab my cute purse and head to the exit, I see Isabelle (Izzy). We wave, and we decide to go to our house to change and grab a few things we left at home. When I get home, I change out of my blue shirt and green skirt into a cute sky blue crop top and stylish short jeans. I grab my books and homework, my phone, my wallet, and pencil case. I stuff them into my bag and head to the library. I meet Izzy who’s already there, so we head across to Starbucks. We both ordered some boba tea and snag a few of our favorite snacks. We head back into the library and pick our favorite cozy table in a small room. We chat as we watch Youtube on our phones, sip boba tea, crunch on our snacks, and do homework. Both of us are A+ students, so we finished pretty quick and went to look at some books. I was looking at some of my childhood books I loved when I found this beautiful silver and blue acrylic book with no author. I showed it to Izzy, and she blinked in surprise. We checked the pages,

but they had no words. “Write anything you want in this book, if you dare,” Izzy read. “That must be to make it silly. C’mon, let’s write!” she continued. “Sure,” I said. I got to write first. Aturquoisefairyfluttersaroundjustrightoutsidethelibrary window. “Imagine that really happened?” Izzy said. I laughed as I looked out the library window. What in the world? There is literally a fairy that’s turquoise fluttering out the window. Izzy sees it too. “Is the fairy real?” Izzy asked, astonished. “I think so…?” I said, also shocked. Before we know it, poof- the fairy’s gone. Izzy scribbles something. I peek at it. Thelibrarydoorsopen, andDuaLipaandTaylorSwiftcome together, chatting. Suddenly, the library goes quiet. The library doors slide open, and two young women come strolling in, murmuring about how nice this town is or something. I can’t believe it. These women are Taylor Swift and Dua Lipa. Then people start screaming and asking for an autograph. “OMG, it’s Dua Lipa!” Izzy whispers. “I know. it’s crazy,” I whispered back. They just stand there. I knew why. “Iz, you need to write something. You didn’t write after that.” I said. “Oh, right! Thanks, Jen,” she replies. She scribbles something- DuaandTaylorsigntheir autographs, selfies, everythingelse, andsaytheywantedtovisitthis placebeforetheleftfortheirhome.Theysaynottotellanyone. Dua and Taylor snap back to life and do just what Izzy wrote, then leave. For the next few weeks, Izzy and I stay at my house. Of course, our parents literally almost grounded us for asking, but we use the notebook and convince them. We also cancel school and buy a million snacks. Then one day, things got out of hand. We were having so much fun writing about stuff we didn’t realize it would all turn true. We wrote about a school bullying situation. A day later, we saw it on news. We wrote about floods. Two days later, Texas got flooded. And so much more. “That’s it,” Izzy said. “We should stop. Like, now.” I nod. “We’re damaging the world everyday, killing innocent people.” I knew we had to fix this. I take out my pen and we go outside.

Just as I start to write, the wind blew so hard that the notebook blew away to downtown. “Oh no,” Izzy cries. “Come on. Let’s ride our bikes and head to downtown!” I said. Two minutes later, we were in downtown, looking for the notebook. “Oh why does my life get worse everyday?” I mutter. “There!” Izzy cries. I see that the notebook had landed on top of an apartment building. It was sprawled on the roof. “Let’s go up the stairs!” Izzy yells. We race up to the roof, and I reach it first. I see the notebook sprawled on the floor. I grab it and throw it to Izzy, who catches it and heads down. I follow. As soon as we get to our bikes, we go straight to the library and tell the librarian about this notebook. To our surprise, they know. They give us permission to destroy it. So Izzy and I go home and burn it. We had learned our lesson, and we’ll never do it again. Like, ever. Oh, and before we destroyed it, we wrote that none of this ever happened. That means we never saw a turquoise fairy, no Dua Lipa or Taylor Swift, no bullying situation, no million snacks, we still had school, no week long sleepover, and no floods. I think I’m ready to go back to my regular life. I’m actually happy because everything’s okay now, or at least I think so. Right?!

Skull Mountain

“We went on this ride but we haven’t went on that ride,” I said. “Yeah but it’s a kiddie ride,” My best friend Emme said. “You know, I think you girls should ride Skull Mountain,” My mom suggested. “It’s really fun and it’s a roller coaster.” “Yeah! You would like it,” MyAuntieAnne said. “Ok,” I said. When we got to Skull Mountain, it looked like I was looking at a real mountain! I gulped. Me and Emme walked in. We were going to ride it by ourselves. When we got on the ride, I looked forward. We were going into a dark area so dark that it looked like I was closing my eyes.I bit my tongue. I could tell Emme was scared too. I was shaking so much that it looked like I was freezing cold! Me and Emme took each others hands.

Then the ride lunged forward. We were off.

“AHHHHHHHHHHH” We screamed. There were a lot of sharp turns. “We’re gonna dieeee!” We both screamed. Finally the ride ended. When I got out, a smile spread across my face. I saw that Emme had a smile too. “Can we go again Mom?” I asked my Mom. “Yeah. Can we Mom?” Emme asked her mom. “Sure,” Our Moms said. Emme and I raced back to Skull Mountain. This time we actually enjoyed ourselves. Then we went a third time and loved it even more. I loved this roller coaster and I’m sure Emme loved it too. I hope I can go there again.

THE KEY

“La la la la!”I sang happily as I walked home from school. “Mom, ?Are you trying to surprise me again? That’s not gonna work this time!” I shouted as I opened the door. I looked around confused. There were papers all over the floor. I was sure something had happened to them. Clank. Some faint sound of something falling to the ground came from the basement. Crreaak, the door went as I opened the door to the basement. “Mom, Dad, are you there?” Then I saw the key. It was lying on the carpet. I picked it up and examined it. BOOOM!!!! “AACCKKK” I shouted as the key melted into thin air. “What just happened?” I said, shocked. Foomp! I watched in horror as a black portal opened in front of me. “Shhhhhhhhhhhh” the portal sucked me in. I had no choice but to go in. “Mom, Dad! Are you inside here?” I shouted as I fell into infinite darkness .

The Baby-Sitters Club

The Baby-Sitters Club is about a girl and she is in high school and she is trying to make money. So one day her mom needed her to babysit her little brother, then she started a babysitting club. She makes new friends and they come in the club. It ends with 8 or 9 girls babysitting. There are lots of fun things that happen!

I love this book because it has everything drama, action, humor, I could not put the book down once until I finished reading the whole book!

I think The Baby-Sitters Club is a very good book for kids ages 5-14

Feather

Day one: Fall

As the sun begins to rest, the trees shed their leaves, orange fruits grow from the garden. The ground turns black, and my ears ring from the dry air. A tiny brown spec falls onto my nose. I extend my arms to place it in my hand, so small and fragile, it might blow away. It is a feather. My finger grabs its stem as I look up into the night sky. An owl flies past into the forest. I follow.

Breakfastatnight

The rustling of the trees and the extent of the branches land as I run past. The ground is dry, so I feel for a spot to sit down. Bushes surround me, so I probably won’t be seen. The bird falls to the forest floor, searching for something. A tiny gray creature rummages through the bushes in the distance; got it! I see a sparkle in its eyes as the predator flies up into the air, waiting to swoop down. The rat comes out of the greenery, unaware of what lies ahead…

A gray-brown owl flies off, with half a rodent in its beak.

I stand up, the owl was nowhere to be found. “Chirp! Click!” Cricket. I walk along the forest path, following the insects’ sounds. Rocks line my surroundings; better watch, ‘could trip. I pull back a leaf to find the valley behind. Light glistens from the long trench under the mountains. I look around; fireflies! Not crickets at all. The war creatures, using their own secret code. I pull a rusty journal from my coat pocket—Grandfather’s diary. Blowing the dust off the hard leather top and flipping through; years of experience and exploration notes itself. Fireflies. He kept a page on what he could find about the insects flying through the night, and I added on every time I could. I could make at least something out; “Food… Fly… Mate…,” like every night. I’ll try again tomorrow.

Cave

My life’s purpose is in my hand, the book. Well, books. 4 lie in my bag; each Grandpa’s, each for a different reason. Life, Nonliving, Self, and an empty pad I use as my composition. Hiking over to the waterfall is not an easy job, but the reward is worth the world. Grass crunches as my head races. Stream, rocks, cave. My spot. For me. MeandGrandpa.

Click!

Lots of dust holds the cave behind the fall, but It’s peaceful. Light hits the water’s meet and flies off in colors. I open the last book. KnowingTheForest:7/14.

FAST FOOD FRENZY

We are Neta, Sasha, and Ariel, We surveyed the 2nd to 5th grades at Bryan School to find out their favorite fast food restaurants. Our favorite part about interviewing was getting to meet new people and visiting the classrooms.

The choices offered were McDonald’s, Dominos Pizza, KFC or Subway. And the winner was ... McDonald’s! Subway got the least votes. We think McDonald's won because it’s the most popular fast-food restaurant in America, Because it’s well known by most, it forms a connection with children.

VS.

The Boston Red Sox are way better than the Yankees. This is because they have Rafael Devers, Masataka Yoshida, Christian Arroyo, and Alex Verdugo. Those are THE BEST Boston players. Devers is the perfect man if you want to hit straight homers. Yoshida can hit homers to the Green Monster, and Verdugo, he’s able to hit right over the Green Monster! Their pitcher Chris Sale always does great. He previously played MLB for the Chicago White Sox, with whom he made his major league debut on August 6, 2010.The Red Sox have won 613 games over the Yankees.

Although the Yankees have a lot of good players like Aaron Judge and Gerrit Cole, the Red Sox have a lot more good players. Rafael Devers’ stat are really good! He plays third base and won a Slugger Award! You have to be really good at hitting to get a this award. Masataka Yoshida is really, really great at hitting fielding, although he plays left field, he makes the best of it. Masataka is a Japanese player. He helped Japan win the National Series against America, along with Shohei Ohtani. Alex Verdugo led the Red Sox with a career-high 152 games played. Also set career highs in hits (166), RBI (74), doubles (39), XBH (51) and total bases (240).

So you can see that with such great players and stats, the Red Sox are better than the Yankees.

-

The Yankees and Red Sox have had a long time rivalry. Going into this season, the Yankees have a 1,2571,049 all-time record against the Sox. This includes a 13-6 record last season. The Yankees have won 40 American League Championships against the Sox’s 14 titles. Now, let’s talk about World Series titles: The Yankees have won 27 of them compared to the Red

Currently the Yanks have numerous top players. First there is Gerrit Cole, their number one pitcher. Not only can he throw a fast ball in the 90’s, but he also has control over a slider, curve, and change-up. That combination is hard to beat. First baseman Anthony Rizzo plays flawless defense and contributes at the plate. Local rookie, Anthony Volpe, brings talent and excitement to the team. Finally, there is Aaron Judge. Not only did Judge break the record for home runs(with 62) in one season, but he also won the MVP in 2022. He can do it all, and continues to do so this season.

I think the numbers speak for themselves, so “All Rise!” and root for the New York Yankees!!!

Grandma’s Pasta

One day, I woke up and I was excited. Today was the day my brother was going for his belt test. He was doubly excited! I was running to my grandma and told her I was ready. Sadly, I could not go to my brother’s belt test. I was disappointed but thenmy grandma told me she would made pasta for me. I felt better already. I love her cooking. She called me when it was ready. I was so happy because my grandma made THE BEST SAUCE! Like literally, THE BEST SAUCE! She made it with spaghetti. That put a big smile on my face. I did not think of missing out on my brother’s belt test. I was just too happy being home with my grandma and her yummy pasta!

Birthday Blast!

One day, I went to the American Dream Mall for Isabelle’s birthday.I was so excited.I had not been there before.First, we went to eat lunch with all my friends. It was yummy. Then we went to a place called Nickelodeon which was in the same mall. There was a huge roller coaster,a merry- go-round, a train and a school bus.I wasn’t sure which to try first. So I went on the scary roller-coaster.It was fun but kind of scary because it was so high! After playing and going on some rides, I got ice cream and a cupcake. It was so good. I had a blast at Isabelle’s party and will never forget it.

Charlies helpers. So if Charlie were to drown Jack and Ana would be able to help.Charlie might be able to scuba dive but he still stays in shallow water. All the other scuba divers love Charlie and think he’s a super smart dog.Charlie loves the others scuba divers too! He loves the attention and the head scratching he gets.Maybe you will be a legend just like Charlie, fully known as the scuba dog!

Ne JerseyDe ilsHockey

Did you know that the New Jersey Devils shared the Prudential Center Arena with the Nets basketball team? But after years of sharing the arena, the Nets decided to move to New York, leaving the Devils as the only major league team to represent New Jersey. The Devils arena has 17,625 seats and 76 luxury suites. I was lucky to be in a suite this past April! We Devils fans like to call the arena The Rock because of the creators of it. In this arena, the Devils won three Stanley Cup Championships. Did you know that one Stanley Cup costs more than $23,000? This is because it is made entirely out of silver. The Devils have reached the playoffs five times: winning in 1994–1995, 1999–2000 and 2002–03 and losing in 2000–2001 and 2011–2012. The Devils are an awesome team, and we are lucky to have them represent New Jersey!

Super Subjects!

We polled 3rd to 5th grade at E.H.B. asking what was their favorite subject in school. Unsurprisingly, specials got the most votes and reading the least.

One thing about our experience polling is that we enjoyed learning other people's opinions. We went through 3rd to 5th grade surveying.

“I enjoyed hearing the funny and wonderful stories at read-aloud,” says Avigail Schieber, Gr. 3, who chose reading.

“I chose specials because I enjoy being surprised and learning new things outside the usual,” says Lucas Paula, Gr. 3.

Interestingly, reading & writing likings went down as kids got older. Specials likings went up as kids got older. Math got more likings as younger grades were interviewed.

We think specials wins because many kids want a break from school work and specials classes are different every day. We think reading is last because lots of school children dislike reading and reflecting as the element of excitement and anticipation isn’t as present.

Bookworm

Have you ever sat down with a book or a Tv remote and looked around you half an hour later only to realize you aren’t a shaggy-haired wizard or haven’t just plane-crashed on a deserted island? Yeah. Entertainment does that to you sometimes, especially when you’re the one creating it. My brain works sort of like a courtroom, where an event, idea, or person is the suspect and I’m the victim, but I’m also the judge. That’s why when I read, I can relax and put myself on jury duty; when I write, I can be the whole courtroom! And everything outside of it, from the government to a philosophical idea. That puts me directly in my comfort zone, and all the way to the other side of the universe, all at once. There are times I get to think a lot before I write, times I get to read before I think, and times I get to write about something totally original, all ideas coming from the courtroom.

Meg Murry is not a very accomplished child. She’s getting low marks in school (despite her genius parents and brother) and is constantly finding new ways to scare the bejeezus out of herself. Before the metaphorical fantasy part of the story begins, she’s particularly paranoid about a bedsheet-stealing tramp that may be wandering in the thunderstorm above her attic room. I could feel connected with this story not because of my own experiences folding up time and fighting powers of dictator- resembling floating brains, but by the sheer essence of strength between the characters and the magnificent embodiments

of greater powers that make me turn the page. This kind of hinting at real-world ideas with fantasy and spiritual fiction makes enjoying and thinking about a story so peaceful yet wild, especially with AWrinkleinTime. I got to be a philosopher, extracting hints from the story and thinking about how this affects our world. I got to be a citizen, walking into the court and enjoying viewing the suspect of trust and weakness itself. But most importantly, I got to be myself. Not Me In An Awkward Situation, not Me In A Fight, just myself, and every thought racing through my mind. It was a surprisingly warm day in early December, and I’d just gotten into the crossover. The park our afternoon was spent in was getting smaller and smaller, and the minutes on the estimated driving time seemed to get larger. I was bored, but I had a trick up my sleeve; I would close my eyes and point my head out the window! No,notasexcitingasyou’dthoughtit’d be?Well,it’sabouttogetwaymoreaction-packed!I rested my hands on the sides of the chair and turned up the temperature. Stillnotintrigued?Well, howaboutthisnextpart?I stood up and walked around. I sat in the grass. Looking up at the calm sky, I saw a little boy in front of me, sitting in a somewhat shady spot. I tried to interact with him, but he went right through me. I decided there was nothing I could do but sit and watch, and watch I did. I slowly picked up that Ichose what the boy, and his female acquaintance, did. And that’s how I wrote Willow Gardens. What? How’dIgofromsleepinginthecartowritinga story? All the power of imagination, creativity, and a love for literature.

I felt comfortable sitting in the calm grass, but I knew there was tension lurking behind every corner, yet I enjoyed every bit of conflict.

I felt a hurricane forming around me, taking me somewhere else yet not moving at all, and just like that, I was sitting at my desk, typing out the outline (which I’m still working on.) I was Jamie,I was the nature, I was WillowGardens.Other than in books, literature is in all sorts of forms. Movies and TV have scripts and descriptive frames. Conversations have diverse dialogue and emotion. Even doing things like sleeping contains so many interactions and subconscious thoughts. I’m sure a nightmare would immediately go on a bestseller list.

Many of my own creations and actions come from dreams. I end up thinking about the pages I could fill with my nightly experiences, and do so. This is why I am who I am, my experiences summed up into 20-minute movies. One time I used a dream as a motivation was when I was only 5 years old. A nightmare told in the form of a scroll/comic strip had scared the daylights out of me and made me remark about things like how interesting it actually was later on. I won’t go into detail of my five-year old mind’s creations, but It got me thinking about how I could turn it into a story.

P)I)N)G was written last year, and I got my inspiration from a dream I had remembered.

Overall, I believe that like science, literature is all around you, and that you could get lost in the twists and turns it can take you through. I have been surrounded by my passion my whole life, and hope you can take the time to find a story in youreveryday shenanigans.

Universal Studios

It’s spring break and my family are at Universal Studios! We met my friend Katie there too. First, we went on a ride called Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. We didn’t have to wait too long. We sat next to each other on the ride. After the ride, we ate lunch and then we ate ice cream. At Universal Studios, you can buy a wand and do some tricks throughout the park. So we got a Harry Potter wand. Katie and I both chose Hermione Granger’s wand, and we did some tricks. My favorite wand trick was where you have to make a feather float. My dad went to get a

drink called butter beer with Katie’s dad. When they came back, my dad gave me a sip and it was so yummy! It tasted like a vanilla milkshake with a buttery flavor and ice in it. After we did some more tricks, we saw a show. It was a racoon that was dancing with scavengers. The show was pretty fun! It was SO hot when we were at Universal Studios but we still had to walk to get to the next ride. The ride was a splash ride! That was good because it was so hot. We had to wait a few minutes. Then when we finally was our turn, we had to sit in a circle-shaped raft, and it was all wet! When the ride started, we were going down slopes of water and really fast waves. When the ride was over, we were soaked! Even our shoes and socks were wet!

But then we saw these little machine things called the people dryer. We figured out that these were for drying yourself after the ride. So Katie’s mom paid for the machine and we all went in the dryer. Unfortunately, the dryer didn’t really help. I loved Universal Stuidios so much. I would go back again without question. There is so much to see and do. If you love Harry Potter, you will have a lot of fun. It was a great vacation!

INTRODUCTION

The Deep…

The deep seas is where no one wants to go. Everyone says, “The sea is to deep to go in.” well we’re doing the opposite! :)

The deep sea has many, many creatures that live in it, for a demonstration, the blobfish, goblin shark, and the most popular, the ugly looking anglerfish. Now thats just a couple of those sea creatures, there’s actually millions! Now that we’ve gone through the animals, time to see the temperatures that can go on down there.

You might think that it’s freezing cold down there, but really it’s actually kind of warm, reaching 39℉ (4℃) temperatures. That’s because there’s water volcanos down there that produce a bit of heat. Some creature also live inside the volcanos!

The Friendly Monster

Once upon a time a girl named Chloe was walking to school when a portal appeared. She slowly went inside and saw nothing but candy and chocolate!! She was surprised the portal wasn’t leading to eternal death, but instead was candy and chocolate. She went a little up a gumdrop mountain until she saw a chocolate door. She opened it a little bit and saw dark chocolate spilling down the ceiling. BOOM! She heard a loud noise. “What is that noise,” she wondered? With all the courage she had, she went deeper when FHDKHRMKSHF! She rolled down the hill and was covered in blood. She fell down so hard that she did not wake up for a hour. “What just happened? AAHHH! What are you doing looking at me?” Chloe said to a stranger. “Oh, hi! My name is Liv. I know you don’t know me but run! Follow me.” “OK? Why are we running for our lives?” Chloe asked while she was slowing down. “The French kindo,” Liv replied. “I heard it killed over 100 trillion people. We need to run for our lives,

We need to go!” Fdumpkiltshebrip! They both stumbled down a hill. “ LLLLLLIIIIIIIIIIVVVVVV! I see the French kindo! Liv? Liv? Where are you?” Chloe yelled desperately.

“If you want your friend back, you must be my friend. I’m very lonely and until I get a real friend, I can’t become my real self.” the French kindo said. “Oh! I’ll be your friend,” Chloe said. “Wait, what is your real name?” Liv asked the monster. “Henry. My name is Henry.” Henry replied. “Let’s all go to the chocolate pool.“ Liv suggested. Ooo! Oooooo!OOoo! That was fun.

Liv, do you know where Henry is?” Chloe asked. “No, but there is a man over there. Wait… that’s Henry! Chloe, we helped Henry to look like a human being. Now let’s PARTY.

YAAAY!!!” Liv and Chloe were so happy they helped Henry and Henry was forever grateful for his new friends.
