Be Patriotic by Going Solar

Because of scheduling issues that we don’t need to get into, we weren’t able to run our usual column for the July issue. That’s unfortunate since the Fourth of July would have been the perfect occasion to express the patriotic feelings that come so naturally to us as we muse about the green-energy transition, an often-dry topic that nonetheless touches on themes of national solidarity and purpose.

But, what the heck—September is as fine a month as any to talk about what solar power and patriotism have to do with each other. (An Arizona September is hotter than July in most other states, anyway). so here goes, our Fourth of July column (edited to reflect the passing of time):

The Fourth of July came and went again this year. It was an occasion to celebrate the history and traditions that tie us together as fellow citizens.

But doing so might have been hard for some folks. With so much anxiety and cynicism in the air nowadays, patriotism has to compete with less sunny emotions about the country’s present and future, leaving some Americans unsure of how to celebrate the nation’s birthday in a way that feels true to how they’re feeling.

The root of the problem could be a lack of active engagement. Love of country, like love of anything else, is not just something you feel; it’s something you do. The blessings that we celebrate every year didn’t materialize out of nowhere. They came from concrete actions performed by patriots who were committed to

practicing the love they felt for their country by solving its problems. As their descendants, it’s incumbent on us to follow in their footsteps by solving the problems of our own time.

With that in mind, going solar is an excellent way to put your patriotism into practice. Don’t see the connection? Let us explain.

As we noted, loving one’s country means actively working to make it better. But that’s hard to do amid a pessimistic political climate in which citizens don’t trust one another. Multiple public-opinion polls show many Americans doubting the good intentions of fellow citizens on the opposite side of the political spectrum. How do you engage in helpful actions when the most effective actions—organized, large-scale ones—are stymied by widespread distrust?

In such a climate, small-scale but visible actions might be more effective than attempts to create large-scale change through political organizing. “Seeing is believing,” as the old saying goes. If people can see positive changes happening because other members of their community are taking steps to create those changes, then it could become easier to believe other positive changes—perhaps even bigger ones—are also possible.

As a private decision with public visibility and impact, investing in rooftop solar for one’s home is, therefore, a perfect way to help break through the walls of mistrust and cynicism. People can see the solar panels in their neighborhoods and hear the notes of optimism in their neighbors’ voices as they explain why they decided to put them up. More civically

engaged members of a community can see their neighbors coming to public meetings to push for solar-friendly policies.

As a surefire way to ensure continued access to crucial natural resources, solar power can unite Americans of different persuasions around a common purpose. Americans agree that the wellbeing of the country depends on a stable climate and energy security. And they agree on the solution: three-quarters of Americans want the US to generate all its electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind.

Arizona, like other southwestern states, is particularly vulnerable to the consequences of drought, which scientists agree is worsened by the heating of the planet. The southwestern states that rely on the Colorado River for irrigation, tap water, and hydropower recently were forced to upend a century-old deal on water rights by agreeing to slash the amount of water that can flow to cities and farms.

In a situation like this, solar power means the power to survive. By capturing the sun’s energy, we can harness the very thing that, because of the greenhouse effect, is heating and drying our region of the country to unsustainable degrees and apply it toward solving the problem. What better way is there to love your country than to participate directly in the solution to one of its most pressing crises?

If you’re ready to achieve energy independence for your family—and help achieve it for your country—then call SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park Celebrates Railfair 2023

Photo courtesy of McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

AS FALL CHUGS INTO THE VALLEY, THE MCCORMICKSTILLMAN RAILROAD PARK IS GEARING UP TO HOST ITS ANNUAL RAILFAIR CELEBRATION FROM SEPTEMBER 30 TO OCTOBER 1, BETWEEN 10 A.M. AND 5 P.M.

The much-anticipated free event is a nod to all things railroading. A major highlight will be the vibrant displays from various model railroad clubs. In addition to the permanent exhibits in the Model Railroad Building, attendees can marvel at an array of outdoor model train layouts. Railroading enthusiasts from across the Valley will present these exhibits, shaded under tents, and strategically positioned near the Merci Train Car and the Model Railroad Building.

For those who love the thrill of live action, the Scottsdale Live Steamers are set to make a return. Having taken a summer hiatus, they’re back to offer rides aboard the Arboretum Railroad. The embarkation point is conveniently located behind the

Model Railroad Building entrance. While the rides come without a ticket price, donations to support the service are warmly welcomed.

Another attraction reopening for the season during the Railfair weekend is the Scottsdale Railroad Museum. Visitors can immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of railroading history by exploring a vast array of artifacts, including a special collection from the historical 40 & 8 Merci Train Car. Adding to the immersive experience, the museum will offer guided tours inside the prestigious Roald Amundsen Pullman Car, offering glimpses into the luxury of presidential rail travel.

Train aficionados and families alike can look forward to rides on the park’s celebrated steam engines. The Paradise and Pacific Railroad’s iconic locomotives will traverse the main track throughout the day, offering scenic journeys around the park. There’s a chance to experience a rare “double header” ride, where engineers will couple engines #10 and #11 for one outstanding circuit around the park.

With an array of activities and displays, Railfair 2023 promises an immersive journey into the world of railroading. Whether you’re a seasoned rail enthusiast or a family looking for a delightful weekend outing, the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, 7301 E. Indian Bend Rd., Scottsdale, beckons. Red Rocks Music Festival Returns with a Star-Studded 22nd Season

CELEBRATING MUSIC AND THE ARTS FOR TWO DECADES, THE RED ROCKS MUSIC FESTIVAL IS BACK, PROMISING AN UNFORGETTABLE 22ND SEASON PACKED WITH A DAZZLING ARRAY OF PERFORMANCES. The festival, a nonprofit organization established in 2002 by Moshe Bukshpan, an esteemed Valley resident and violinist, continues to shape Arizona’s cultural scene.

With a mission to educate, engage, and challenge, the festival weaves a tapestry of melodies by fusing the talents of Arizona’s leading artists with globally acclaimed musicians. This season’s lineup at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church and Sedona Creative Life Center is particularly notable.

On Saturday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m., music

enthusiasts will gather at the Paradise Valley United Methodist Church to celebrate the 70th birthday of iconic composer Daniel Asia. The evening promises an auditory journey featuring Asia’s “Piano Variations” & “Why (?) Jacob,” alongside “Variations on a theme by Chesnokov” by Joshua Nichols.

As an additional treat, Aaron Copeland’s “Piano Sonata” will be masterfully executed by Dr. Daniel Linder from the University of Arizona. To further enrich the experience, Prof. Asia will provide personal insights, introducing his compositions to the audience.

But the magic doesn’t stop there. Sunday, Oct. 15, sees another spectacular offering at 3 p.m. with “Brahms & Amram.” The iconic composer, pianist,

and singer David Amram collaborates with Grammy-nominated violinist Elmira Darvarova, Howard Wall on the French Horn (formerly of the NY Phil), and Thomas Weaver on the piano from Curtis Music Institute. A delightful medley of Amram’s pieces, including “Themes from Splendor in the Grass” and “Spontaneous Blues,” will be performed, with the Arizona evening piece dedicated to the festival, encouraging audience participation. The concert also boasts Brahms Horn Trio, Op.40 among other selections.

Sunday, Nov. 12, promises to be an affair to remember. Held at 3 p.m., the legendary violinist Shlomo Mintz teams up with pianist Vitaly Serebriakov to deliver masterpieces like A. Dvorak’s “Romance for violin & piano” and

Mintz’s “Sonatina,” marking its Arizona Premiere.

Outside its headline events, the festival holds the Winter Chamber Music Institute annually. This institute nurtures advanced strings and piano students, offering them coaching opportunities from a distinguished faculty.

Tickets for the various concerts range from $10 for students to $36 for general admissions. Given the excitement surrounding this year’s lineup and the festival’s stellar reputation, tickets are expected to sell out swiftly.

Mountainside Fitness to Transform Former Albertsons Space into State-of-the-Art Facility in North Scottsdale

Photos courtesy of Mountainside Fitness

AS ARIZONA’S LARGEST LOCALLY OWNED FITNESS CENTER, MOUNTAINSIDE FITNESS IS POISED FOR ANOTHER EXPANSION, AND THE STREETS OF NORTH SCOTTSDALE ARE BUZZING WITH ANTICIPATION.

Mountainside Fitness recently announced ambitious plans to renovate a once bustling Albertsons grocery store into its 21st elite fitness location.

Situated just east of the 101 freeway at Scottsdale Towne Center, the chosen location boasts a sprawling 50,320-square-foot space at 15660 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd.

The fitness center will offer an extensive range of amenities including three separate group fitness studios, a tiered cardio platform, and an expansive strength floor with an outdoor workout space. Patrons can also look forward to basketball and pickleball courts, a dedicated childcare area, and well-equipped locker rooms complete with saunas and steam rooms.

Drawing inspiration from its Paradise Valley counterpart that launched in 2020, the new location will also house the M Café amongst other facilities.

The prime location, which remained unoccupied since the departure of Albertsons, has long awaited revitalization. Craig Cote, Mountainside Fitness CEO, expressed his enthusiasm about the project. “This is a tremendous area with high-density housing, making it a stellar location for our members,” notes Cote. He adds, “Its proximity to the freeway and surrounding amenities and shops is unmatched. We are elated about introducing our 21st Mountainside Fitness to Scottsdale Towne Center and are confident it will serve the local community commendably for years ahead.”

The successful deal was orchestrated by Commercial Real Estate Brokers Regan Amato and Ryan Tanner of JLL, representing Mountainside Fitness. On the other end, brokers Ryan Desmond and Neil Board from Western Retail Advisors championed the interests of the landlord.

Prospective fitness enthusiasts are looking at a wait, as construction is slated to span approximately eight months. Mountainside Fitness aims to cut the ribbon on this new establishment by mid-2024. To mark the occasion, they will roll out exclusive member specials. For more information, visit mountainsidefitness.com.

Photo courtesy of Horizon High School

Horizon High School is buzzing with pride as its very own junior, Teraya Sigler, emerges as a world champion in the realm of international volleyball. Earlier this month, Sigler, who occupies the position of an outside hitter for the U.S. Girls U19 National Volleyball Team, led her squad to victory against a formidable Turkish team, bringing home the gold medal.

This win is particularly noteworthy as Sigler’s team is the inaugural group to ever be crowned the Girls U19 world champions. TINTED TOPS!

This is a project that will get your (color) wheels spinning! There are seven colors in the visible light spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet (ROY G BIV). When all seven colors of light combine they produce white light. The colors of objects appear the way they do because of how they interact with light. When an object appears red, it absorbs every color of visible light except red, which it reflects. Thus, how light is absorbed and reflected in relation to these objects is what determines their color.

SUPPLIES

• 1 paper plate or piece of cardstock paper

• 2 rubber bands

• 1 pencil

• 1 pair of scissors

• 1 set of crayons (in ROYGBIV)

CHALLENGE

• Draw a circle with a 4-in diameter on the plate

• Use the pencil to mark the center of the circle

• Cut the circle out from the paper plate

• Mark seven evenly spaced sections on your circle

• Color each section of the circle using the crayons, each section being a different color

• Using your pencil, poke a hole through the middle of the circle

• Secure the pencil in the middle of the circle using the rubber bands

• Spin the top

ASK YOURSELF SOME QUESTIONS

What are the colors of the rainbow? What colors do you think are in white light? What happened to your top when you spun it? How did the colors change? Would this experiment work using a different color plate? Why or why not? How does speed change how the colors change?

Before doing this activity - did you think there was a science to color? Colors are just one of many ways we see art and science connect. Many times art can be inspired by science, and sometimes science needs art to help explain complex ideas and happenings. Can you think of any other ways or places art and science connect?

Community College students change the lives of people with dementia

AMesa Community College foreign exchange student discovered the perfect way to feel at home in a new city. Buhari Abdulai signed up for the College Partners Program offered by Hospice of the Valley. The innovative program matches college students with older adults living with dementia.

“I found the vision of hospice so intriguing, and I wanted to be part of a great team that provides beautiful care to people living with dementia. There is nothing like that in my country,” the 24-year-old Ghana native says.

For the next seven months, Buhari offered socialization and companionship to 80-year-old Bill Harris and his family.

“Buhari became a part of our extended family,” says Bill’s wife, Myra. “For two semesters, he faithfully visited on a weekly basis and his visits were eagerly anticipated by all of us. Buhari brought laughter and joy into our home. He conversed with my husband, sampled new foods with us and even allowed my grandson David to introduce him to red licorice. He played games with our grandson and graciously joined us for David’s sixth birthday party — it just made his day!”

Buhari and other College Partners volunteers say they are grateful for the chance to make a difference in people’s lives. They are exposed to hands-on, real-life, career-defining experiences that have a lasting impact.

Arya Yadav says volunteering taught her how to appreciate the small things in life that we often miss and celebrate “the joy of living in the moment and relishing it as a sweet memory later.”

Danielle Cooper utilized the magic of music to make meaningful connections with her person with dementia. “She loved ‘70s music and was able to sing every word of every song!”

Mariah Meza Perez was paired with a former nurse practitioner who shares “brave, wild, and inspiring” stories from her career — and inspired her to pursue the same profession. One of her fondest memories was taking strolls together and sharing their gratitude for each other at the end of every visit.

Hospice of the Valley and its Supportive Care for Dementia program launched this unique student volunteer program in 2021 with a grant from the national Community Care Corps. The goal is to enhance quality of life for people living with early and moderate stages of dementia, and also to reduce caregiver burden.

In exchange for their generous gift of time, students receive incentives like scholarship opportunities, monthly education with dementia experts, and a Dementia Training Certificate.

“The knowledge I’ve gained has sparked a passion inside me as a future healthcare provider,” says Ali Kindred. As a College Partners volunteer, she provided companionship by watching westerns and making milkshakes, allowing a family member to take a muchneeded break from caregiving.

Now that Buhari is back in Ghana, he is determined to advocate for people living with dementia. “After learning about the complexities of this disease, I realize there may be people who have been misdiagnosed as mentally ill. I plan to educate families in my community to seek medical care and obtain accurate diagnoses. People living with dementia are not mentally ill, but they do require optimal care, love, and support.”

To apply for the College Partners Program, contact Holly Cottor at hcottor@hov.org or call 602-515-6207. To learn more, visit hov.org/volunteer/college-partners-program.

Neighbors Hello Neighbor!

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… my morning meditation.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… is “Jungle Book” because it brings me nostalgia. It was made the year I was born, and I relate very much to Mogli.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a doctor. I’ve always wanted to help people through their healing journeys, and I’ve manifested that in my current life path, just in a different way.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “L-O-V-E” by Frank Sinatra.

MY LIFE IS… full of joy because I have my family and loved ones around me.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… each one of my crystal bracelets that I wear every day. I love to incorporate crystals into my life because, as you can probably tell, I am a huge proponent of holistic healing. I even have a bunch of crystals that were gifted to me on display right when you walk into the wellness center, which all help to cleanse energy and give off positivity.

MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… a yearlong cruise around the world.

HI, MY NAME IS… Monica B. Samuels.

I’VE LIVED IN THE VALLEY FOR 33 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… I enjoy the desert landscape and heat.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… waking up, doing tai chi, and drinking my protein and vitamin shake. Then I look over my emails and messages for the day. I like to cuddle and play with my dog before getting ready and heading into my business, Quasar Quantum Healing. I see a lot of clients in a day who are going through various struggles and life experiences, and I help them overcome these challenges through my five holistic healing modalities: LED Red Light Therapy, Quantum Foot Detox, Hyperbaric Chamber, Theta Chamber, and Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. I put my all into my clients, so my daily social battery has to be high, which is why I love my morning routine. After work I usually eat a very light meal before getting ready for bed, watching one of my shows, and going to sleep.

MY FAMILY IS… my entire world. Everything I do is for my family.

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my mom. Her kindness was what inspired me most and I am always intentional to treat others with kindness. She also was an advocate of being your unique self and always accepted me for the playful, outgoing, determined person I am.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… finding my husband watching “Finding Nemo” by himself the other night.

THE PERFECT DAY IS… having just enough challenges to overcome in a day so that I feel productive and accomplished. I like obstacles that make me feel like I’m solving a puzzle and push me to find Zen, even in a bit of chaos.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… my own! Quasar Quantum Youth Fund helps underprivileged kids receive the care that they need. I started this nonprofit because I knew that there were so many children in need of the treatments I provide, but whose families sadly could not afford it. I wanted to make sure finances were not an obstacle for anyone, so I decided to set aside a portion of my earnings from the business to fund those children in need of financial assistance.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… “Persistence is the key to success,” from Walter Cronkite. It has not been easy to build an entire business from the ground up, especially when the business was set to open in 2020. Even though I had to reevaluate my plan, I knew that there was still a purpose and place for my idea. The one thing that kept me persistent throughout the craziness of the pandemic was my vision to create a space where everyone could heal themselves.

An 85254 Market Report

Homes in the Magic Zip Code continue to sell this summer, as of August 18. There have been 724 closings in the last 12 months. This number is down slightly from the usual 900 homes sold each year. This reduced volume is probably a reflection of the rising mortgage interest rates we’ve seen over the last year. Let’s face it, folks

who qualified for a million-dollar home a year ago now can only afford $800k today. Average rates for a 30-year fixed mortgage are 6.93%.

Inventory stands right at two months. There are 135 homes for sale with 65 homes in escrow and an average of 69 homes sold each of the last six months. This is still considered tight and a sellers’ market. Three months inventory would

be more balanced. However, this is an improvement over a year ago, when we had less than a month inventory and every new listing had buyers bidding against each other.

Going forward, we are looking for more of the same going into the fall. It is unlikely rates will drop. We can hope they don’t go up, but it is anybody’s guess.

Scottsdale Plaza Resort Set for Major Expansion

Rendering courtesy of Highgate

The Scottsdale Plaza Resort, a prominent fixture at the intersection of Scottsdale and Indian Bend Roads, is gearing up for a massive expansion. Recent developments reveal that the 404-room resort has gotten the green light to add new rooms, restaurants, and a state-of-the-art spa.

Highgate, a hospitality management group based in New York, unveiled its plans for the nearly 50-year-old property after acquiring it in a partnership with Boston’s Rockpoint Group in 2021 for $90.75 million. Their vision for the Scottsdale Plaza Resort includes a redevelopment of the eastern portion of the 40-acre property close to Scottsdale Road. Key components of the renovation include 64 additional guest units, three new restaurants, a modern spa with an upper-level pool area, a redesigned resort pool featuring a second-level viewing deck, a fresh

lobby pavilion, and various enhancements peppered throughout the property. In total, this makeover will introduce 153,230 square feet across 12 new edifices.

However, this transformation is not without its sacrifices. Several existing buildings, amounting to over 39,000 square feet, are slated for demolition to accommodate the new structures. Although Highgate remains tight-lipped about the expenses linked with the expansion, projections indicate that the rejuvenated resort will welcome guests by the first quarter of 2025.

Highgate’s innovative vision for the Scottsdale Plaza Resort involves crafting “two cohesive but distinct resort experiences.” While exact details remain under wraps, one segment targets a younger audience, promising a vibrant and social experience. Conversely, the southern section will radiate luxury, offering upscale amenities to match.

These dual themes aim to cater to a diverse clientele, ensuring that guest expectations align with their experiences. Both segments will feature their dedicated lobbies. The pre-existing resort lobby will undergo a makeover, and its restaurant will sport a new identity as an all-day dining spot. Meanwhile, a 2,700-square-foot lobby pavilion will emerge in the luxury segment.

These additions will witness the resort’s room count jump to 468. Some guest rooms will replace antiquated buildings, offering direct access to the new resort pool, while others will pepper a former parking lot. Eight villas are also in the pipeline for the resort’s southern side.

Highlighting the spa, Highgate emphasized the present facility’s outdated nature, prompting the decision to construct a two-story building. This establishment will house a brand-new spa, a fitness center, and retail outlets on the ground level, with a café and pool gracing the rooftop.

In terms of dining, the resort’s blueprints reveal the demolition of the now-defunct Remington’s restaurant and 10 lodge suites to pave the way for three new dining establishments. With a seating capacity ranging between 8,000 to 12,500 square feet, these venues will predominantly serve dinner.

Highgate has hired Angeles’ HKS as the chief architect, Floor Associates for landscape architecture, Simeone Deary Design Group and Design Agency for interior design, Rider Levett Bucknall as project manager, and Scottsdale’s Rose Law Group for legal expertise in land-use.

Estate Planning for the Blended Family

In first marriages, a couple generally have identical goals for their estate planning: take care of the surviving spouse for as long as he or she lives, then distribute what’s left to their children.

But second marriages can be different. The blended family – his children, her children and sometimes their children as well – makes for more complicated planning. Each spouse may have separate assets as well as their joint, community assets. Both usually want at least some of their assets to go to their own children after they die. At the same time, they want to make sure the surviving spouse has enough to live on.

With a blended family, a couple has to put a plan in place if they want to be sure their goals are met. This won’t happen automatically.

Think about one of the most famous blended families – the Brady Bunch. What happens if Carol and Mike have all their assets in joint tenancy and don’t have a will or trust? If Mike is the first to die, Carol will get all the couple’s joint assets. But then what happens when Carol dies? Without a will or trust, state law steps in. Arizona law says that Carol’s children get her assets. That

means the three girls get everything, and Mike’s boys are left out. I’ll leave it to your imagination whether those girls are going to share the wealth. If Mike and Carol want to divide everything between all six of the kids, they need a plan to assure that will happen.

Mike and Carol may want to be sure that the survivor of them is well cared for, but they also want to be sure their own kids share in what’s left after they are both gone. They can plan for this in their trust. The trust can provide that some of their assets go to an irrevocable trust at the first spouse’s death. The surviving spouse is the beneficiary during his or her lifetime. The trust, however, says where the assets left in the trust go when the survivor passes, and the survivor can’t change that. This way the first spouse to die is assures that there are assets distributed to his or her children when the second passes.

There are many factors going into estate planning for the blended family. However, most couples do have one common goal, which is doing the right thing for everyone involved: themselves, their spouse, their children, and their spouse’s children. Unveiling the Silent Shifts: Hormonal Changes Before Menopause

Did you know that hormonal changes can start up to 10 years prior to menopause?

For many women, navigating this premenopausal period can be a frustrating and confusing experience as these subtle, silent shifts often go untreated.

Recognizing the symptoms and patterns that signal the start of peri-menopause can empower women to better understand their health and get the relief they deserve.

THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

The first hormones to change during peri-menopause are progesterone and testosterone. Unpredictable periods, heavy

bleeding, or heightened PMS symptoms could be whispers from the body, signaling that change is underway. These symptoms are commonly associated with declining progesterone levels.

Low testosterone can manifest in a range of symptoms including weight gain and fatigue, diminished muscle, strength and libido, skin changes, and difficulty concentrating. Many women also experience changes in their mood, encompassing feelings of anxiety, depression, and increased irritability.

While changes in estrogen typically occur closer to menopause itself, fluctuating estrogen levels can lead women to experience the hallmark symptoms of hot flashes, joint pain, night sweats, and moodiness. Additionally, estrogen often spikes right before it declines, causing

many women to experience weight gain, bloating, cramping, and heavy periods.

GETTING RELIEF FROM SYMPTOMS

While peri-menopause is not commonly talked about, it is a common experience for women to be missing their mojo before menopause! Unfortunately, with a one-size-fits-all approach, many women are left to suffer until their labs are “out of reference range.” So what’s the solution?

Partnering with a physician that is well-versed in the intricacies of perimenopause is key for navigating these silent shifts with grace. Working with a women’s hormone specialist can ensure that accurate, comprehensive labs are run at the right time of your cycle, and that optimal lab values are considered when creating your individualized treatment plan.

Why Do I Still Have Sciatica?

Will I Eventually Need Surgery?

Question:

I have sciatica and I feel like I’ve tried everything to help it. I’ve tried massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, stretching, exercising, you name it. e problem is, everything seems to help a little bit, but only for a short while. I’d like to avoid surgery, but I’m concerned that nothing seems to be working. Can this sort of thing be helped?

ank you for your insightsShannon

Answer: Hi Shannon, thank you for your question about sciatica, and whether or not there is a solution without surgery. is is a great question and sciatica can be quite confusing (for healthcare professionals as well!). For anyone struggling with recurrent sciatica there are a few things that are important to understand.

First of all, muscles are not smart. ey do not have minds of their own. Typically what happens in sciatica is that muscles in your back have gotten progressively tighter and more sti over years and months of recurring back or hip issues. Eventually this muscle tightness causes irritation in the joints of your back, and can even add additional pressure to the discs and nerves. Any of these areas can give you pain, for example: your pain may be caused by the tight muscles, the compressed joints, the discs, or the nerves. What’s important to know, is that none of this is the ROOT CAUSE of your pain, it’s the RESULT of a bad pattern.

Let me explain. e REASON a muscle gets tight in the rst place is to compensate for another muscle not doing it’s job, or to protect an injury. It’s the brain that tells it to do this, and at rst it’s a good thing because it allows us to heal and keep moving. e problem is that the brain is really good at learning new patterns. So this pattern of using the bigger muscles gets stuck in the brain. So the muscle now begins to be used for everything. Over time, the brain forgets to use the other muscles to support the back and these muscles atrophy (get smaller and weaker). is leads to more compensation being required. e compensating muscles gradually get more and more sti and exhausted, leading to an ache and tired feeling in the back. Eventually they get used so much they irritate the joints, discs, and nerves, see how these are a result of the brain’s pattern?

Second thing to understand: is is precisely why all of those treatments you’ve tried give you temporary results. ey focus on the tight muscles, sti joints, or nerves. While massaging the tight muscles, and opening the joints give temporary relief from the pain, the pattern in the brain remains unchanged, so gradually your symptoms return.

If you want to make lasting changes, what you need to do is change the pattern in the brain to get it to use the right muscles. Many people will confuse this with focusing on “core” exercises or needing to strengthen the small muscles. is leads me to the third thing. If you just jump straight into movements like squats, planks, and bird dogs, your body will continue using the wrong muscles. You have to nd someone who can help you gure out which muscles to target, as well as avoiding targeting the ones that are already compensating. e biggest thing to understand here is that if you nd someone who helps you correctly, your pain should change at least every couple of weeks, and you shouldn’t have to do the same exercises every day just to feel normal.

Now, I’m not saying that all sciatica can be xed without surgery, there are cases in which surgery can be a great option when the damage that’s already been

done is too great. It depends on what your speci c situation is with your back. If you are considering back surgery, know that “prehabilitation” is also possible. Meaning that if you work to get stronger before your surgery, your outcome will also be better.

ere’s also the question about injections. Sometimes injections might be the fastest way to pain relief. If the pain is excruciating and preventing you from getting relief in standing, sitting, or your daily life, this might be the right decision for you. If it works, it could buy you some needed relief to start doing the things that will x it for longer.

Now that we have that covered Shannon, if you have periods of time where you are able to be active and your back does not hurt, chances are that there is still something to be done without needing to consider surgery. e fact that there’s a situation in which your back does not hurt with activity, means that with some good detective work it can be gured out how to make that situation more permanent.

Here are some tips to start making some changes in your daily pain quickly while you gure out your next steps:

1. Make sure you’re not crossing your legs, this includes while you sleep, put a pillow between or under your knees.

2. Keep MOVING: Bedrest is not good and will only worsen the muscular patterns.

3. Drink plenty of water, at least half of your body weight in ounces daily.

If you try these suggestions and are still having trouble, before you get surgery come see us at “ e Doctors of Physical erapy.” We can help you analyze your movement patterns and which muscles your brain is favoring and help you understand what’s going on with you speci cally. Even if you have had physical therapy before, our “PHIX sciatica” program has helped many people in Arizona continue staying active without having to go down the route of surgery.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

“Oppenheimer”

The true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s work towards the creation of the atomic bomb and its social fallout.

"Oppenheimer" is one of the most devastating motion pictures to emerge from the studio system in a long while, both in its presentation of its subject and his actions. This isn't a movie about triumph in the face of potential destruction; it's about a selfish man, nay, a selfish group, whose desire for selfpreservation threatens our very existence. Through clever editing and visuals, in both subtext and overt message, we witness the lead's gradual realization of the consequences of his actions— but only after he has acted to save himself. He complies until the deed is done, selecting his moral stance when it suits him. Meanwhile, the supporting characters either defend or confront him. The entire experience is suffocating yet undeniably brilliant.

“Talk

To Me”

A group of teens go too far in a supernatural game and suffer the consequences.

"Talk To Me" possesses a fury in its terror that's rarely seen. Each scene virtually chokes the air out of you, making you feel as if you're in as much danger as the characters. When the violence ensues, it's visceral; you can't look away. Coupled with a standout performance from newcomer Sophie Wilde, this film provides an experience that's both terrifying and emotionally devastating. It's a new installment in the horror canon that will, hopefully, influence many works to come.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”

The four mutant brothers have to step into responsibility when the world is at risk.

"Mutant Mayhem" serves well to introduce younger fans to the series, while also paying tribute to longtime aficionados. It's a solid, entertaining flick, bolstered by the chemistry among the four leads who truly capture the

'teenage' essence implied in the title. While the characterization and story may be somewhat lacking and familiar, the unique and thrilling animation and action more than compensate. The humor appeals to audiences of all ages. It's a fun, lighthearted romp, even if there isn't much depth to delve into.

combined with a thunderous score from Bear McCreary, puts the finishing touch on this film. It's a commendable addition to the creature feature genre.

The crew of the cargo ship Demeter find themselves fighting for their lives upon realizing there’s a stowaway onboard: Dracula.

This film is engagingly surprising, given that it's essentially "Alien" at sea, substituting the Xenomorph for Dracula. It's appeal lies in the direction, which conjures an isolating ambiance, thanks both to the confined space of the ship and the vast emptiness of the surrounding ocean. The narrative delivers a raw brutality that makes viewers flinch, especially a scene in the third act that stands out for its sheer cruelty and viciousness. One drawback is the excessively dark visuals, often obscuring the on-screen action. Nevertheless, the cast's unwavering commitment,

The Flagstaff Trails Passport: FROM FOREST TREKS TO BOUTIQUE RETREATS

As trails lead to discoveries, Flagstaff’s hotel scene unfolds like a trove of stories waiting to be experienced.

Tucked in the vast expanses of the world’s largest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest, Flagstaff unveils its newest charm - the Flagstaff Trails Passport. It’s not merely a guide but an invitation to traverse lesser-trodden paths, diving deep into the fabric of a city that fuses nature, culture, and luxury.

The Flagstaff Trails Passport operates with a simple yet engaging premise: check-in at the curated list of local trails, and based on the level of difficulty, earn points. The more you explore, the more rewards you gather. These range from commemorative stickers for just a single trail point, to wooden postcards for 5 points, and even a heartwarming opportunity to give back with a donation made in your name at 10 points to the FTI (Flagstaff Trails Initiative). Passionate hikers hitting the 15-point mark can snag a stylish fanny pack for future adventures.

Each trail in the passport beckons with a unique allure. One-point trails, like the Arizona Trail through Picture Canyon or the Campbell Mesa trail system, offer gentle strolls for those seeking serenity. Meanwhile, the Kachina Trail and the Little Elden Spring Trail, falling under the two-point category, up the ante a bit. And for the thrillseekers, the three-point rank awaits with challenges like the rigorous O’Leary Peak Trail and the lofty Kendrick Mountain Trail.

Little America Hotel Flagstaff emerges as a blend of elegance and wilderness. Located amidst 500 acres of pristine Ponderosa Pine Forest, this AAA Four Diamondrated hotel exudes luxury at every corner. The meticulous attention to detail is evident, from the sprawling rooms to the breathtaking views of the San Francisco Peaks. But it’s not all about the outdoors. The Silver Pine restaurant offers culinary delights, a perfect end to a day spent at nearby attractions like Meteor Crater.

Meanwhile, the High Country Motor Lodge resonates with younger travelers. Set just off Route 66, this boutique-style, pet-friendly hotel merges vintage aesthetics with modern vibes. Its proximity to Riordon Mansion and Northern Arizona University adds to its charm. But it’s the evening entertainment, tailored for Millennials and Gen Zs, that truly sets it apart, offering a fresh twist on Flagstaff hospitality.

Not too far off, the Weatherford Hotel stands as a testament to Flagstaff’s rich history. Dating back to 1897, this quirky-chic establishment retains its historic charm while catering to modern sensibilities. It’s a slice of history, positioned a heartbeat away from Route 66, allowing guests to relive the tales of old while reveling in contemporary comforts.

Outside the walls of these establishments, Flagstaff unfolds its myriad offerings. From exhilarating mountain biking trails, checking out the stars at the Lowell Observatory, leaf peeping in autumn’s hues, to visiting The Museum of Northern Arizona (established as a repository for Indigenous material and natural history specimens), to miles of Route 66 that echo with the mountain city’s vibrant culture, there’s something for everyone.

Of course, traversing trails and exploring Flagstaff’s gems can ignite a hunger only the city can satiate. James Beard nominees include Proper Meats + Provisions, Atria Restaurant, and Shift Kitchen + Bar, and are ready to tantalize the taste buds.

In Flagstaff, trails don’t just lead to nature’s wonders, but to boutique retreats, gastronomic adventures, and historic tales. So, grab your passport, let Flagstaff guide your steps and heartbeats, and dive deep into the city’s many tales. They’re all waiting to be written in your travel chronicles.

It’s a good idea to visit the experts at the Visitor Center, 1 E. Route 66, upon your Flagstaff arrival, as they can assist with recommendations and itinerary things to do.
