A

pple pie and hot dogs often take center stage on the Fourth of July, but the real stars are the men and women who served and sacrificed for our country.

They dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms — many losing their lives.

That’s why Hospice of the Valley care teams are delighted to honor veteran patients in meaningful ways — whether that is a tribute visit by another veteran, a birthday party or even sharing a unique recognition for their years of service.

That recognition came in the form of an emotional reception and book signing for Korean War veteran Bob Withers of Ahwatukee. He was excited to share his story with Imprints of Honor for the Library of Congress’ Veteran History Project.

The proud 96-year-old Marine asked his Hospice of the Valley chaplain, Kody Kness, and daughter, Lauren, to attend the recent event with him at Scottsdale Stadium

to commemorate the 3,000th veteran interview for this national endeavor. “It was a great opportunity to honor so many veterans,” Bob shared. “I won’t ever forget this wonderful day!”

Dorothea “Dolly” Dworkin, 102, was thrilled when her care team arranged for a tribute visit from volunteer Charles Roth, who is part of Hospice of the Valley’s Saluting Our Veterans program. The Phoenix resident served for three years in World War II, enlisting with WAVES — the women’s branch of the Naval Reserve — as soon as she turned 20. After her discharge, Dolly met her husband at a party for returning soldiers and sailors. They were married for 70 years and raised three children. The daughter of a WWI Navy veteran, she looks back on her military career with fondness, sharing this bit of wisdom: “We are so lucky that we live in this country. Anything that you can do, whatever way you pick to do it, you can make this country better.”

When you’re a proud veteran and your 100th birthday lands on Memorial Day,

it calls for a celebration! Darrow “Buzz” Wehrman’s care team was not going to let this important milestone slip by unnoticed, so Hospice of the Valley nurses Sheri Pape and Carrie Aragon and social worker Jeri Reid planned a wonderful surprise party with fancy party decorations, cake and presents — and even a birthday hat to match Buzz’s shirt! “He makes a point of telling us at every visit how we are his friends,” Jeri said. “We just adore him!” When asked to share his favorite memory of his military service, the Mesa centenarian stopped everyone in their tracks with this amazing story: As he and his fellow soldiers were getting off the ship in the Philippines, they were told to go back — the war was OVER! “It was the first time we had felt peace in a long time,” he shared.

That peace is something we all celebrate each Independence Day with immense respect and gratitude for all the brave veterans like Bob, Dolly and Buzz who make it possible.

estern Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC), a career and technical education public school district, is looking to fill open spots in high-opportunity programs for the 2025-26 school year.

The high-opportunity programs are available at West-MEC campuses throughout the West Valley.

The programs, named below, are considered high-opportunity programs as they focus on industries that have a low supply of skilled workers, but a high demand from employers. Programs are open at all four of West-MEC’s central campuses, which include Central (Glendale) Campus, Northeast (Phoenix) Campus, Northwest (Surprise) Campus and Southwest (Buckeye) Campus.

CENTRAL CAMPUS: • Coding (Session 1): interactive program that teaches students how to design and develop software, build apps for phones, tablets, websites, and write and test computer code.

In addition to the “Best Musical” honor, NVAA’s Kayla Trevino, a talented student actress from the Hadestown production, was selected as one of three finalists to represent Arizona at the national level for the esteemed Jimmy Award.

s winter settles in, camping opportunities become more limited in most parts of the United States. However, for much of the South — as well as RVers and ambitious coldweather enthusiasts — camping season never ends. Throughout national forests across the U.S., year-round camping options are abundant, offering many amenities and accessibility options.

adventure you’re pursuing — whether snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or avoiding the white stuff altogether and opting for a trip south for warm-weather hiking — these campgrounds provide a range of settings to serve as home base during every kind of outdoor escape. Keep reading to discover which national forests have year-round campgrounds in Arizona.

Outwander used Forest Service data from Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest the Department of Agriculture to identify Arizona campgrounds in national forests available throughout the year, based on a national analysis. We looked at the number and names of available yearround campgrounds for each.

National parks, from Yellowstone and Grand Canyon to Acadia and Valley Forge, focus largely on preserving natural and historic resources. National forests, meanwhile, are managed for everything from recreation and resource preservation to grazing and wildlife.

aradise Valley Community College (PVCC) recently named Marisha Geraghty as the 2025 recipient of the Beth Koehnemann Community Impact Award, in honor of her outstanding contributions to student success, community collaboration, and educator development through the Volunteer in Paradise College Corps (VIPCC) program at Paradise Valley Unified School District (PVSchools).

Named in honor of community trailblazer Beth Koehnemann — whose efforts led to the founding of the Northeast Valley Education Center (now PVCC) in 1985 — this award celebrates individuals who embody the power of education, collaboration, and service.

Geraghty was recognized for her exceptional work as coordinator of VIPCC, a collaborative partnership between PVCC and PVSchools. Now in its 19th semester, VIPCC enhances the field service experience for students enrolled in EDU 221 and EDU 222 by placing them in local classrooms for immersive, hands-on experience.

Upper-division students also benefit, completing student teaching through PVSchools as part of their education pathway.

For PVSchools educators, the program offers classroom support and professional incentives. Mentor teachers receive recertification credits, while PVCC students gain invaluable, real-world teaching experience, building relationships and professional networks that often lead to future employment within the district.

hen most people think of estate planning, they picture wills, trusts, powers of attorney and planning for their home, stock accounts and personal property. But in today’s world, there’s another category of assets that’s easy to overlook — and it’s one that can create major headaches for your loved ones if ignored: your digital assets.

At our office, we’re seeing more and more clients who don’t realize just how much of their life is online — until we start asking the right questions.

So, what exactly are digital assets?

They include everything from your online bank and investment accounts to social media profiles, email accounts, photos stored in the cloud, loyalty rewards, and even cryptocurrency wallets and NFTs. Some of these carry clear monetary value. Others — like decades of family photos stored in Dropbox or on your phone — have deep emotional significance.

The problem is, if no one knows they exist or how to access them, they may vanish when you do.

What makes digital assets so tricky?

First, most online platforms have strict privacy policies and terms of service.

Even with a will or trust, your family may not legally access your accounts without explicit permission. Second, many people forget to include digital assets in their estate planning documents altogether. And finally, if you haven’t left behind usernames, passwords, or clear instructions, your family may find themselves locked out of your online world.

Here’s what we advise our clients: • Start with an inventory. Make a list of every digital account you own — email, financial, social media, cloud storage, subscription services, crypto wallets.

Write down usernames and store access instructions securely, such as in a password manager your family can access later.

• Include management of digital assets in your legal documents. At our firm, we ensure your power of attorney includes provisions that comply with the Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA), which Arizona has adopted. This gives your trustee or executor the authority they need.

REVIEWS The Life of Chuck Mike Flanagan’s introspective “The Life of Chuck” unfolds in reverse — beginning with death and tracing back to life’s quiet origins.

It’s an elegiac meditation on mortality, steeped in his signature claustrophobic aesthetic that blurs the line between haunting and heartwarming. Yet, the film struggles to maintain tonal cohesion; a languid second act drains momentum and underuses Tom Hiddleston, whose role pales beside his younger counterparts.

Flanagan swings for profound, but the result, while admirable, often feels like a beautiful sketch rather than a fully realized portrait.

Materialists Celine Song’s sophomore feature isn’t your standard rom-com, despite the promotional gloss.

“Materialists” probes deeper, offering a sobering look at the transactional nature of love and the illusions that bind people together.

The cast excels, especially Pedro Pascal, whose charm eclipses all around him. The film earns points for ambition and thematic boldness, but an erratic pace and jarring pauses in dialogue detract from its rhythm.
