Charity Celebrating our veterans this Independence Day By Lin Sue Flood Photos courtesy Hospice of the Valley

A

pple pie and hot dogs often take center stage on the Fourth of July, but the real stars are the men and women who served and sacrificed for our country. They dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms — many losing their lives. That’s why Hospice of the Valley care teams are delighted to honor veteran patients in meaningful ways — whether that is a tribute visit by another veteran, a birthday party or even sharing a unique recognition for their years of service. That recognition came in the form of an emotional reception and book signing for Korean War veteran Bob Withers of Ahwatukee. He was excited to share his story with Imprints of Honor for the Library of Congress’ Veteran History Project. The proud 96-year-old Marine asked his Hospice of the Valley chaplain, Kody Kness, and daughter, Lauren, to attend the recent event with him at Scottsdale

Stadium to commemorate the 3,000th veteran interview for this national endeavor. “It was a great opportunity to honor so many veterans,” Bob shared. “I won’t ever forget this wonderful day!” Dorothea “Dolly” Dworkin, 102, was thrilled when her care team arranged for a tribute visit from volunteer Charles Roth, who is part of Hospice of the Valley’s Saluting Our Veterans program. The Phoenix resident served for three years in World War II, enlisting with WAVES — the women’s branch of the Naval Reserve — as soon as she turned 20. After her discharge, Dolly met her husband at a party for returning soldiers and sailors. They were married for 70 years and raised three children. The daughter of a WWI Navy veteran, she looks back on her military career with fondness, sharing this bit of wisdom: “We are so lucky that we live in this country. Anything that you can do, whatever way you pick to do it, you can make this country better.” When you’re a proud veteran and your 100th birthday lands on Memorial Day, it calls for a

celebration! Darrow “Buzz” Wehrman’s care team was not going to let this important milestone slip by unnoticed, so Hospice of the Valley nurses Sheri Pape and Carrie Aragon and social worker Jeri Reid planned a wonderful surprise party with fancy party decorations, cake and presents — and even a birthday hat to match Buzz’s shirt! “He makes a point of telling us at every visit how we are his friends,” Jeri said. “We just adore him!” When asked to share his favorite memory of his military service, the Mesa centenarian stopped everyone in their tracks with this amazing story: As he and his fellow soldiers were getting off the ship in the Philippines, they were told to go back — the war was OVER! “It was the first time we had felt peace in a long time,” he shared. That peace is something we all celebrate each Independence Day with immense respect and gratitude for all the brave veterans like Bob, Dolly and Buzz who make it possible. Lin Sue Flood is director of Community Engagement at Hospice of the Valley. Dolly Dworkin

Korean War vet Bob Withers invited his Hospice of the Valley chaplain and daughter to a book signing for the Imprints of Honor project.

Education PVCC names 2025 Beth Koehnemann Community Impact Award recipient Photo coutesy of PVCC

P

aradise Valley Community College (PVCC) recently named Marisha Geraghty as the 2025 recipient of the Beth Koehnemann Community Impact Award, in honor of her outstanding contributions to student success, community collaboration, and educator development through the Volunteer in Paradise College Corps (VIPCC) program at Paradise Valley Unified School District (PVSchools). Named in honor of community trailblazer Beth Koehnemann — whose efforts led to the founding of the Northeast Valley Education Center (now PVCC) in 1985 — this award celebrates individuals who embody the power of education, collaboration, and service. “Beth Koehnemann believed in the power of education and the importance of community-driven change. Marisha embodies that legacy in every sense,” said Education Faculty Meggin Kirk, who presented Geraghty with the award. “Her leadership and dedication have shaped one of PVCC’s most impactful programs, supporting both our students and our local schools. We are proud to carry forward Beth’s spirit through this award and through Marisha’s inspiring work.” Geraghty was recognized for her exceptional work as coordinator of VIPCC, a collaborative partnership between PVCC and PVSchools. Now in its 19th semester, VIPCC enhances the field service experience for students enrolled in EDU 221 and EDU 222 by placing them in local classrooms for immersive, hands-on experience. Upper-division students also benefit, completing student teaching through PVSchools as part of their education pathway.

For PVSchools educators, the program offers classroom support and professional incentives. Mentor teachers receive recertification credits, while PVCC students gain invaluable, real-world teaching experience, building relationships and professional networks that often lead to future employment within the district. “With guidance from Meggin Kirk and other PVCC instructors, VIPCC has helped develop some of the finest future educators,” Geraghty added. “It’s a true win-win. We’re building a strong teacher pipeline with the highest quality candidates, while providing real support to current classroom teachers. It’s also one of the favorite aspects of my job — I’ve truly loved working with PVCC staff and students.” VIPCC OFFERS A WELL-ROUNDED AND SUPPORTIVE STRUCTURE THAT INCLUDES: • Orientation to PVSchools • Field trips to observe classroom dynamics • Access to the PVSchools Center for Teacher Development • Individualized placements with mentor teachers • Ongoing coaching and semester check-ins • Invitations to district events and professional development • Letters of recommendation to support future employment As PVCC continues to elevate programs grounded in community and service, the Beth Koehnemann Community Impact Award remains a powerful reminder of how one individual’s vision can shape generations. Health In 30 Minutes I Had a Plan for My Knee Pain that Didn’t Require Surgery or Pills

By Knee Pain Expert, Dr. Matthew Hernandez Ethos Integrative Medicine

“I

was losing sleep. I couldn’t get comfortable at night and would wake up constantly. That was the most frustrating part. Everything I was told to do was not helping… the pain was only getting worse.”

Nathan, 46, came to us after exhausting every option outside of surgery. A marathon runner, energetic entrepreneur, and father to two boys, Nathan took pride in his active lifestyle and was determined to find a solution for his knee pain.

Ice packs and heat compresses were no longer helpful, and relying on pain-pills was not an option he

wanted to take. He committed to physical therapy for several weeks with little impact, tried dry needling and cortisone injections without success, and was ultimately told by multiple doctors to stop all activity that aggravated his knee. Nathan had done everything his insurance allowed but was still stuck at square one. WHAT THE OTHER DOCTORS MISSED… Nathan had fallen into what we call “The Gap” — where insurance-based care cycles with no end in sight, surgery isn’t an option, and waiting for the pain to get worse seems like the only choice. Most providers only look for what they know how to treat. But our comprehensive ‘Deep Dive’ approach and expertise allowed us to bridge that gap for Nathan.

Using a detailed pain profile, 57-point knee inspection, MSK ultrasound scan, and diagnostic injection, we were able to confirm Nathan’s knee injury and quickly develop a targeted treatment plan to heal the damaged tissue. A COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION, NO SURGERY OR PILLS In just 4 weeks, the pain improved significantly, allowing Nathan to regain his range of motion, sleep soundly at night, and return to the sport he loves: “My body is performing better than before, and I even signed up for a Ragnar race now that I’m back to running again — something I didn’t think I would ever be able to do! T

here is hope for back pain relief right here in North Scottsdale. Dr. Kourtney Zamora, a Doctor of Acupuncture, has spent over a decade helping people alleviate their pain. With her extensive expertise in treating nerve pain and chronic back issues, she takes on even the most complex and severe cases, including those that disrupt sleep. Many of Dr. Zamora’s patients share how her treatments have transformed their daily lives. One patient expressed, “My pain and neuropathy became unbearable, but now I can sleep through the night without relying on pills. Thank you so much for your help and care.”

Dr. Zamora’s journey in healthcare began early; at just 16, she worked as a nursing assistant in a nursing home, discovering her natural inclination for caregiving. She feels fortunate to have found her calling so early in life. She is board certified in acupuncture through the NCCAOM. She has been clean needle technique certified since 2015 and employs traditional Chinese acupuncture techniques in her practice. Q&A with Dr. Kourtney Zamora, D.Ac. Question: What unique q services do you y offer?

Answer: I specialize in helping those who have been in pain for an extended period. Many of my patients come to me suffering from back pain, peripheral neuropathy, sciatic pain, and more. I provide evidence-based traditional Chinese acupuncture combined with FDA-approved modern technology to help reduce pain. My extensive healthcare background allows me to offer exceptional care. Often, the individuals I see have already explored various options — surgery, medications, physical therapy, and injections — without success. Some feel like they are at the end of their ropes with their pain, which can lead to depression from being unable to enjoy life. I want them to know that there is hope for a pain-free future. Question: What do you find most rewarding about your job? Answer: The most fulfilling aspect of my job is witnessing my patients’ progress as they go through their treatments. The initial phase can be slow, and patients often feel impatient for results after suffering for so long. However, once they reach the second phase, the benefits of acupuncture become evident. They begin to feel hopeful again, and I notice improvements in their mood. Patients often tell me things like, “I was finally able to take my dog for a walk without my sciatic pain flaring up the whole day,” or, “I played 18 holes of ggolf for the first time in years!”

I genuinely care about those who are experiencing pain, and it brings me joy to hear my patients express their heartfelt gratitude when they begin to feel better. As a former migraine sufferer, I understand how much pain can limit your life. I warmly invite you to schedule an evaluation so we can discuss your symptoms and explore how acupuncture can support your journey to improved health. Remember, it’s never too late to take the first step toward feeling your best! Call 480-300-5767 to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Zamora or schedule online at www. AZacu.com. Throughout national forests across the U.S., year-round camping options are abundant, offering many amenities and accessibility options.

Legal Digital Assets and Estate Planning: Don’t Let Your Legacy Disappear By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks

W

hen most people think of estate planning, they picture wills, trusts, powers of attorney and planning for their home, stock accounts and personal property. But in today’s world, there’s another category of assets that’s easy to overlook — and it’s one that can create major headaches for your loved ones if ignored: your digital assets. At our office, we’re seeing more and more clients who don’t realize just how much of their life is online — until we start asking the right questions. So, what exactly are digital assets? They include everything from your online bank and investment accounts to social media profiles, email accounts, photos stored in the cloud, loyalty rewards, and even cryptocurrency wallets and NFTs. Some of these carry clear monetary value. Others — like decades of family photos stored in Dropbox or on your phone — have deep emotional significance. The problem is, if no one knows they exist or how to access them, they may vanish when you do. What makes digital assets so tricky? First, most online platforms have strict privacy policies and terms of service. Even with a will or trust, your family may not legally access your accounts without explicit permission. Second, many people forget to include digital assets in their estate planning documents altogether. And finally, if you haven’t left behind usernames, passwords, or clear instructions, your family may find themselves locked out of your online world.

Here’s what we advise our clients: • Start with an inventory. Make a list of every digital account you own — email, financial, social media, cloud storage, subscription services, crypto wallets. Write down usernames and store access instructions securely, such as in a password manager your family can access later. • Include management of digital assets in your legal documents. At our firm, we ensure your power of attorney includes provisions that comply with the Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA), which Arizona has adopted. This gives your trustee or executor the authority they need. • Name a digital fiduciary. Just like you choose someone to manage your finances or medical care, you can name someone to manage your digital property. This may be the same person — or not — depending on their tech skills. • Back up what matters most. Don’t rely on access to the cloud. If you’d be heartbroken to lose it, make sure it’s saved offline and organized for easy access. • Consider subscribing to our Digital Legacy Vault at just $99 per year to store username information, passwords and all of the lists you’ve made, to be shared when the time comes that your family needs to access them. Technology is only going to move faster. The best thing you can do today is plan ahead — so your loved ones aren’t left scrambling tomorrow. Our office can help you create an estate plan that reflects your whole life — digital, physical, and everything in between. If you’re interested in a complete plan, give us a call at 601-375-6752 to schedule your free initial consultation and make sure your legacy doesn’t get lost in cyberspace.

Is Pain Stealing Your Life, One Day at a Time?

New Book by Dr. Tom Padilla Shares Helpful Information, Tips, and Advice for People Let Down by the Medical System In the next 10 years, the surgical industry is expected to double. From joint replacements to spinal surgeries, more and more people are being told their only option is invasive procedures. Yet in the U.S., we already spend as much on back pain annually as we do on cancer, diabetes, and arthritis combined—without meaningful progress.

no obligations and read it in the comfort of your home.

Free Book!

The worst part? These surgeries are far from guaranteed to restore your quality of life. Our reactive healthcare system focuses on managing symptoms instead of solving problems at their root. If you want to protect your quality of life, the time to take control is now. “They Told Me I’d Have to Stop— But Now I’m Back to Doing What I Love” For many people, persistent pain doesn’t just steal your mobility—it shrinks your world. Whether it’s playing with your kids or grandkids, traveling, or enjoying hobbies, pain can make even small moments feel out of reach. That’s why local doctor Tom Padilla wrote his #1 bestselling book, Solving the Root Cause of Pain. Inspired by his own battle with undiagnosed chronic pain in his 20s, and countless stories from patients - Dr. Padilla created this easy-to-read book to help others escape the cycle of temporary fixes and failed treatments. “Many people we see at my clinic have been told their pain is just a part of getting older, or that nothing more can be done,” says Dr. Padilla. “But most of the time, pain isn’t inevitable—it’s a signal that something deeper is going on. You just need the right tools to address it.” “Pain Isn’t Just Physical—It Steals the Best Parts of Your Life” The book offers practical tools and insights for those struggling to find answers. Readers will discover: • The Root Cause of Pain: Why most treatments fail and how to address the real issue. • Breaking Free from Temporary Fixes: How to avoid the cycle of painkillers, injections, and short-term solutions. • The Hidden Cause of Stiffness: Why stretching and massage don’t fix the problem— and what to do instead. • Finding the Right Providers: How to identify skilled providers and spot red flags before wasting time or money.

18 • July 2025 • North Tatum Times

“There’s too much misinformation and too many people suffering needlessly,” Dr. Padilla explains. “My goal is to put good information into as many hands as possible, whether it’s understanding their pain or learning how to find the right provider, this book is about giving people the tools to take control of their health.” If you’re tired of losing moments that matter most to pain or worry, this book could be the first step toward lasting relief. Every Day Lost to Pain Is a Day You Can’t Get Back

• Taking Control of Your Health: Simple strategies to stay active, prevent injuries, and enjoy life without fear of pain returning.

“Many chronic injuries can heal if treated at the root cause,” says Dr. Padilla. “But far too often, healthcare providers miss the mark by focusing only on symptoms. People end up stuck, wasting time on ineffective treatments, and feeling like their pain will never go away.” One example is Kathy, a 50-year-old grandmother who had tried everything from chiropractic care to massage therapy, only to be left frustrated and in pain. After working with Dr. Padilla’s team to uncover the root cause of her pain, Kathy was back to hiking, playing with her grandkids, and living life without fear of injuries holding her back. Dr. Padilla’s book not only helps readers identify the root cause of their pain but also teaches them how to evaluate whether a treatment is working. His goal is to provide clarity in a system that often leaves patients in the dark. “Stop Losing Time with the Wrong Treatments” Dr. Padilla knows firsthand how frustrating it is to feel dismissed by the healthcare system. That’s why he’s offering Solving the Root Cause of Pain for free—to give as many people as possible the tools they need to take control of their health. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal

REVIEWS The Life of Chuck Mike Flanagan’s introspective “The Life of Chuck” unfolds in reverse — beginning with death and tracing back to life’s quiet origins. It’s an elegiac meditation on mortality, steeped in his signature claustrophobic aesthetic that blurs the line between haunting and heartwarming. Yet, the film struggles to maintain tonal cohesion; a languid second act drains momentum and underuses Tom Hiddleston, whose role pales beside his younger counterparts. Flanagan swings for profound, but the result, while admirable, often feels like a beautiful sketch rather than a fully realized portrait. Materialists Celine Song’s sophomore feature isn’t your standard rom-com, despite the promotional gloss. “Materialists” probes deeper, offering a sobering look at the transactional nature of love and the illusions that bind people together. The cast excels, especially Pedro Pascal, whose charm eclipses all around him. The film earns points for ambition and thematic boldness, but an erratic pace and jarring pauses in dialogue detract from its rhythm. Imperfect but intriguing, it cements Song as a

myhyperlocalnews.com

filmmaker with something to say—even if she’s still refining how to say it. Predator: Killer of Killers This animated entry in the Predator franchise is as sleek as it is savage. “Killer of Killers” stretches across timelines, pitting elite killers against the iconic alien hunter with stunning visual flair.

NEW RELEASES July 2 40 Acres Jurassic World: Rebirth The Old Guard 2 (Netflix)

The animation unlocks visceral combat sequences that live-action could never dream of, though the storytelling leans shallow — each segment a stylish brawl more than a character study. Still, it culminates in a satisfying finale that unites its fragmented structure.

Heads Of State (Amazon Prime Video)

A lean, kinetic thrill ride for franchise faithfuls.

Sovereign (Limited)

Dangerous Animals Yes, it’s about a killer who weaponizes sharks. No, it’s not high art. But “Dangerous Animals” is schlock done right — tight, fast, and unapologetically bonkers.

July 18

Jai Courtney revels in his villainous role, delivering an unhinged performance that chews scenery as gleefully as his aquatic accomplices. The script is thin but functional, with just enough ingenuity from its heroine to keep things afloat. You come for the sharks, you stay for the chaos. Three stars — no more, no less.
