You’d know the answer to the most critical questions like: Will I be able to be active, and mobile? And will all of my years be quality ones? What should I do now to make certain that it’s a “yes?” In fact, you’d know exactly what to do, what to avoid, and best of all...which doctors you can trust to help get you there! If you’re active, and you’re aged 30+, and you have found that conventional advice, such as rest, or medication isn’t working for you, you’ll want to pay attention to what I’m about to tell you... it could help you finally stop trying short term solutions, and get a solution that allows you to be active with confidence again. Back pain & sciatica is becoming more common with quarantine, and most treatments only focus on relieving the pain. This works for a bit, but the pain is just a symptom. To find the cause you have to go deeper. So deep in fact, that you have to go all the way back to how your brain is interacting with your muscles. The most common thing that I hear people say, is “I have tight hip and back muscles.” They say that when they stretch their muscles, their back pain or sciatica lessens, but they stop doing it because they have to do it all the time to get any results. Does this sound familiar? They also tell me that one side always seems to be tighter than the other, or that no matter how much they stretch, the muscles don’t get looser. To understand why muscles get tight, you have to know that your muscles are not very smart. They do what they’re told, and the brain is the one in charge. Your brain is constantly aware of where your body is in space, and tries to keep you stable. For example, when hiking a tricky trail, your brain tells your ankles, knees, and hips how to behave to stay balanced. If your brain feels like your body is unstable, it will call in extra muscles to help improve that stability. So it will tighten big muscles that are typically only used for large movements or heavy lifting. In the case of back pain & sciatica, your tight back and hip muscles are likely compensating for weakness in other muscles. This in turn creates compression in the joints and around the nerves. As this compression goes on for a long period of time, inflammation builds up until you get full blown back pain or sciatica.
stiff muscles but people are often left still feeling like the tightness continues to return. Injections: Injections can be powerful anti inflammatory measures. They can be very effective in reducing your pain, but consider this. If your car had the check-engine light on, would you just pull out the circuit that turned the light on? Pills: Similar to injections, pills can be great to help you function if you can’t get away from the pain. But taking them every day becomes tiresome & can damage your organs. Topical Medication: These medications can certainly be soothing for a while, but many people become frustrated by how frequently you have to use them. Chiropractic care: Chiropractic care can be effective at relieving the pressure of the joint on the nerve. However if you find yourself needing to go constantly to stay out of pain, chances are it’s- By masking the USA fact that overactive Leading BackthePain Expertmuscles are the not the joint. importance of hand washing, and for good reason. Washing your hands often is the easiest and most effective way to prevent the spread of germs. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to wash your hands before and after touching your face, touching your mask, touching a surface that’s frequently touched by others and, of course, after using the restroom. Germs can live on surfaces for two hours or more, so it’s important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you don’t have access to soap and water, an alcohol-based wipe or hand sanitizers are good alternatives. INCORPORATE VITAMIN D According to research by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, vitamin D plays a role in reducing your likelihood of developing the flu. However, most Americans are deficient in this vitamin, which can lead to rickets, poor immune system function, and risk of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D storages can be increased by exposure to sunlight, eating fish, egg yolks, beef liver or taking supplementation. However, you should have your blood levels checked by your physician before
supplementing as too much vitamin D can be toxic and can damage your kidneys. STAY HYDRATED Staying properly hydrated can support the immune system and allow it to defend your body from viruses. Drinking at least half your body weight in water in ounces is a great way to stay hydrated which enables your body to fight off the flu. It will also help improve your quality of sleep, cognition and mood. If you have a hard time drinking enough water, consider adding your favorite fresh fruit to the water to provide flavor or a marked water bottle to give you goals to hit throughout the day. EAT A HEALTHY DIET Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help support the immune system by providing your body the central nutrients it needs to function properly. The immune system protects the body from infection, so giving the immune system the power it needs to defend the body can help keep you healthy during the flu season. The flu is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets that are produced when speaking, sneezing, or coughing like the coronavirus. Adding these steps in addition to CDC guidance to prevent the spread of coronavirus, like wearing a mask and social distancing, will help keep you healthy through the end of flu season. Dr. Stephanie Seitz, ND, MT with Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Sciences has extensive training in a variety of treatment modalities including homeopathy, botanical medicine, clinical nutrition and acupuncture.
