Aesop Aesop was an Ancient Greek fabulist or story teller credited with a number of fables now collectively known as Aesop’s fables.

Although his existence remains uncertain and no writings by him survive, numerous tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day.

• Many of the tales are characterized by animals and inanimate objects that speak, solve problems, and generally have human characteristics.

• Depictions of Aesop in popular culture over the last 2500 years have included several works of art and his appearance as a character in numerous books, films, plays, and television programs.

• Ancient sources mention two statues of Aesop, one by Aristodemus and another

by Lysippus, and Philostratus describes a painting of Aesop surrounded by the animals of his fables. None of these images have survived.

Once upon a time the Wind and the Sun fell into an argument about who was the strongest.

-I am the strongest, the Sun said.

-No, I am ,the Wind said -I have an idea, the Wind said.

-What? The Sun asked -You look this man over there? Whoever can make that man take off his coat faster, will be the strongest.

-I am in, the sun said

The wind began to blow hard upon the traveller, making his coat flap wildly around him. At first the man buttoned his coat. The Wind then blew harder. The harder the Wind blew, the more closely the man wrapped his coat around him. FINALLY, the Wind had to give up in defeat.

Then it was the Sun’s turn. The sun came out and began to shine brilliantly. At first the man loosened his coat.

The Sun continue to smile upon him then, the man unbuttoned his coat. A bit later, as the air was warmer, the man felt he couldn ‘t bear it any longer. Finally the man threw off his coat.

He hasn’t got any of his clothes anymore.

He was looking right and left for a tree he couldn’t find any tree and then he felt to the river.

The Wind said……

The fox with his tail cut off

One day, a fox was prowling around through the woods in search of some food.

For two nights, he was trying to catch some hens from the closest village’s hencoop, but he didn’t manage.

The first time the dogs smelt him, they started barking and he ran away. The second time not only the dogs started barking, but they also chased him and he escaped at the last moment.

The fox hid inside his cave, panted after running and he stayed hidden there for all the other day because he thought that he could still hear the barks of the dogs.

However, he was so hungry, that when it got dark, he decided to go hunting.

But this time the fox would chase in the forest instead of entering the village for some hencoop, because the dogs were awake and dangerous.

While he was prowling in the forest looking for birds, he smelled fresh meat.

The fox put his snout on the ground and following that strong smell, he got to a thick bush.

There, he found a piece of meat.

If he hadn’t been so hungry, he would have been suspicious how the meat had been hidden in that bush.

But, hungry as he was, he jumped into the bush in order to grab the meat.

No sooner had he grabbed the piece of meat than he heard a very strong “crack� and he jumped in the air frightened.

But he couldn’t escape, because his tail was caught in an iron trap, which had been hidden into the bush by a peasant in order to catch a wolf.

The fox jumped in the air yelling from the pain, but the iron trap held tightly his tail and he couldn’t escape.

The fox understood that if he stayed there, the peasant would come and would kill him. He had to go away. He had to escape at all costs!

And clenching his teeth, in order to bear the pain, he jumped abruptly in the air in such strength, that his tail was cut off and was left in the iron trap.

Thereafter, covered with blood, without tail, he went as fast as he could inside his cave and he hid there, hungry, in pain, until his wound was healed up.

When he got out of the cave, he was skinny from the fasting.

The fox had to go hunting again in order to eat, but he was too shy to appear in front of the other wild animals, and mostly to the other foxes which had their fluffy tails.

However, clever as he was, he came up with a plan.

He assembled the foxes and began to tell them happily: -Did you see what I’ve done? I’ve cut my tail.

-Why? they asked him in surprise.

-Because it bothered me when I ran, as it was too heavy! Cut your tails and you will see how good you will feel. You don’t know how light I feel and how fast I can run now.

One of the foxes, the eldest and the cleverest told him: -You wouldn’t be giving us this advice, if you had not lost your tail. Do your job and we don’t want to cut our tails!

What we learn

We shouldn’t imitate what the others do!!

Once upon a time there was a farmer who killed a lamb, he hang it from a tree and started cutting it little by little in pieces in order to sell it.

A crow, which was flying at that moment over there, saw the meat and when the farmer wasn’t looking, he cut a piece of it and flew away.

By the time the farmer realized what had happened it was very late. The crow had already gone away, flying to a forest nearby.

At that time of the day, a hungry fox was prowling in the forest, looking for something to eat. As she was walking under a tree, she smelled the fresh meat and raised her snout to understand where that smell was coming from.

After that, she saw the crow, which was sitting on a branch of the tree, holding the piece of meat at his beak.

The starving fox, really wanted this piece of meat, so she tried to find a way to eat it. She could even climb on the tree or the crow would fly away to eat the meat that he had grabbed.

The fox was really crafty so she thought to deal with this problem in another way.

So she stood under the tree, leaning against the trunk and looked at the crow.

-Are you Mr.Crow! She shouted to it. The crow turned his head and looked the fox without leaving the piece of meat from his beak.

-Yes It was you! Do you know that I didn’t recognize you at the beginning?

The crow looked at the fox in wonder without answering.

-And how could I recognize you? The fox asked again making her voice as sweet as possible.

-You have grown a lot since the last time I saw you.

The crow flattered by the fox ,puffed and shook his feathers without leaving the piece of meat from its beak.

-Sure!the fox went on.You have grown and become more beautiful than you were.And your wings are so black! I was so right when I told you that you should be the king of birds in this forest.

The crow turned his head to listen better.

-Two days ago we had the same conversation, the fox said.

I told the animals that you should be the king of birds but the others didn’t agree because they said you haven’t got a good voice. If you had a nicer voice, they would make you the king immediately, they said.

When the crow heard these, he got dizzy. Being the king of birds, what else would he ask for?

And how did they dare to say that he didn’t have a nice voice?

Now he would show them...

And opening his mouth he shouted as loud as he could: -Ckra, ckra But in the meantime, the piece of meat that he was carrying with his beak fell down and the crafty fox grabbed and ate it.

-You have a nice voice Mr.Crow, he told him while she was going away. If you had your mind too ,it would deserve you to be the king of the birds in this forest.

This story teaches us not to let ourselves be flattered by anyone.

The Cicada and the Ants is an Aesop story.

Aesop has written hundreds of stories.

The Cicada and the Ants is one of the most popular.

It rained so much a whole day and night that the ground got muddy, the water got into the anthills and the grains of the wheat, which the ants had stored there all summer, got soaked.

The next day the rain stopped, the sun got out and the sunny weather lasted for the whole week. When the ground got dried completely, the ants carried all the wet wheat grains out of the anthills and laid them out in the sun to dry.

Thus, they would have food for the winter and they could pick up some more in the following summer.

One Cicada, who was hidden in the hollow of a tree for as long as the rain lasted , got out of the tree to get some sun and started looking for a leaf to eat.

All the trees had unluckily shed their leaves and the cicada was left both hungry and pensive on a dry brunch.

When he saw the ants putting out the wet grains of wheat, he got down the tree, went close to them and said:

C: Dear ants, give me some wheat because I’m starving to death.

A: What have you been doing all summer long ?

Haven’t you stored any food ?

They asked him in surpise.

C: No, I haven’t stored any food. It was such a beautiful summer that I sang all the time.

A: Well, since you song in summer, now in winter you can dance, The ants said.

• The cicada realised how stupid he had been. He hadn’t picked up any food and spent his time having fun, instead !

• This Aesop tale is teaching us that if you don’t work hard in your life you won’t get a reward.
