lanning a good study space for the kids may not guarantee straight As, but it will provide the right environment for improved concentration and better work practices.

Today a study area takes varied forms. Many new-home builders are designing study nooks outside children’s bedrooms.

Setting up a separate work area can be helpful – a desk in a child’s bedroom doesn’t always equate to restful slumber when children are trying to switch off from work mode.

Other clever designs have seen study spaces incorporated into landings at the top of stairs in a double-storey home, making better use of an area that’s otherwise considered ‘dead space’.

And for younger children, study nooks can form part of the main living area, so parents can supervise homework or internet use while preparing dinner.

But if you prefer a more structured set-up, then a dedicated study room may be the way to go. This room should be zoned away from the main family living area, providing a quieter work environment.

This set-up is also ideal for people who work from home and need to separate home life from work life.

Tips from Scott When it comes to renovation, it’s fair to say Scotty knows a thing or two.

“Check your budget and know your limitations,” Scott says are the golden rules.

“Make sure you have a plan and don’t change it,” he adds.

As for attempting a renovation with your other half, Scott has this to say. “If you do this with your wife try not to have a stink. At the end of each day have a beer and a chardy.”

A keen renovator herself, Shelley says the most important thing is to be realistic about your budget, timeframe and your own skill level.

“Live in the home for a period of time before you start tearing things apart,” Shelley says.

“Check where the sun comes from in order to maximise light. See what needs immediate attention and what can wait.”

And Shelley is a firm believer that less is more.

“Unless you are über confident in your styling, keep it simple and add personality with items that are easy to change, depending on your mood or the season. Mosaic tiling in your kitchen may be cool today but what about tomorrow?”

Use strong contrasting warm colours to give balance and life to a room.

•

Windows can be a major feature of a room. Use them to highlight the best view aspects for your property. This can make a big difference at sale time.

•

Use mirrors to increase the feeling of space - a simple and effective trick for small spaces.

Use lots of textures to add interest to a room and portray your individual style.

If you find a bargain, buy it and horde it until you need it.

Don’t be scared to buy a rundown property in order to get a bargain.

Download a floorplan creator online and spend time getting your floorplan right. They are easy to use and very effective. Do ten designs and pick out the best points in each plan.

Do as much as you can yourself. Get tips from tradies. Do a course or whatever it takes to save money.

•

Buy the best tools first. If you plan on doing a lot of work yourself, invest in decent tools. Cheap ones just don’t cut it and you may end up re-buying them.

Know what you want before you start. Get inspiration wherever you can – friends, other houses, family, magazines, etc.

•

Find bargains where you can. Look at factory outlets, store seconds, buy during the sales, eBay, Gumtree, etc.

•

Take time finding your tradesmen. You will need a licensed plumber and electrician. It’s always good to have a builder! Check out their work and don’t be afraid to ask for their qualifications.

•

Don’t cut corners - Think about the resale value, even if you plan to live there.

•

Have fun and enjoy the experience.

Every room needs a key item to make it ‘look’ more expensive and not like a DIY project. So decide what this item will be and add less expensive items around it.

Quince & RoQuefoRt fRangipane taRt 600g caster sugar 2 quinces, peeled, cut into wedges Juice of 1 lemon, plus 1 tsp lemon zest 11/2 cups (225g) plain flour 125g chilled unsalted butter, chopped, plus 125g softened unsalted butter 1/3 cup (50g) icing sugar pinch of ground cinnamon 1 vanilla bean, split, seeds scraped 3 eggs 1/4 cup (35g) plain flour 1 cup (120g) almond meal 100g Roquefort* or other blue cheese, crumbled Rocket, to garnish

Preheat your V-ZUG Combi-Steam XSL oven to 80°C (or a regular oven to its lowest temperature). Combine 500g caster sugar and 800ml water in a flameproof casserole.

Bring to the boil, then simmer over medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Add quince and lemon juice and return to the boil. Cover surface closely with baking paper. Bake for 4 hours or until quince is soft. Drain. Set aside.

Meanwhile, whiz flour, chilled butter, icing sugar, zest and cinnamon in a processor until mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add 1 egg and 2 tbs chilled water and whiz until dough comes together in a ball. Enclose in plastic wrap and chill for 15 minutes.

Roll pastry to 3mm thick. Line a 23cm tart pan with pastry. Chill for 15 minutes.

Increase V-ZUG Combi-Steam XSL oven (or regular oven) temperature to 180°C. Line pastry with baking paper and fill with pastry weights. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove paper and weights, then bake for a further 10 minutes or until golden and dry.

Meanwhile, beat softened butter, vanilla seeds and remaining 100g caster sugar in an electric mixer until thick and pale. Add remaining eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each. Stir in flour and almond meal.

Lay quinces on tart base and scatter over cheese. Pour over the frangipane mixture, then bake in the oven for 40 minutes or until golden. Garnish with rocket and serve warm or at room temperature. Serves 8. * Roquefort is available from delis.

Avoid common Kitchen renovation mistakes A kitchen renovation is a major undertaking in any home but how do you know if you are doing it right? Here are some of the common mistakes and how to avoid them.

The Budget

The budget is one of the fundamental elements of a kitchen renovation but it is important that you set a realistic budget and stick to it. Do not spend too much money on the renovation or you will risk over capitalising.

A good general guide is not to spend more than seven per-cent of what you paid for your home. Flexibility is also important when it comes to sticking to the budget. Don’t set your heart on something that you cannot afford.

Measure Twice

Ensure that you measure the space for your kitchen correctly. The wrong measurements can be disastrous - leading to cabinetry, kitchen bench tops and appliances not fitting.

Not what you want when you have spent good money already!

Succumbing to Trends

Resist the temptation to succumb to the latest trends. What looks good now may not look good in a few years’ time, and you want the renovation to last. Make your design as classic and timeless as possible. If you insist on using the latest trends, use them in areas that can easily be changed, such as feature walls or with ornaments.

Ensure that you are happy with the professionals whom you are using and that you trust them. Get written quotes wherever you can as this will help to prevent you going over your budget and over the allocated time for your renovation.

The Details

Often, people are so concerned with the overall kitchen that they forget about the details, such as the power points, where the lights are, and so on. Plan for these in the design stage.

Also think about how your appliances work, not just how they look. Good-looking appliances are fine at the start but you will soon get annoyed if they don’t do the things that you need.

Storage

Nothing is more irritating than a kitchen that does not have enough storage space for everything that you need, so ensure that you build in plenty of storage in the planning stages. Don’t just think about what you need now - try to take your future requirements into account.

Commonly Used Appliances

What appliances do you use daily? For most people, these will include the stove, oven, dishwasher, fridge and microwave. Ensure that these are within comfortable distance of each other and that they are also located close to food preparation areas.

Design with the End in Mind Design your kitchen according to who will be using it. Before you even start your kitchen design, think about who will be using the kitchen the most or who will have special requirements - the primary cook, elderly people, children, entertainers, and so on.

There is no point having a fancy kitchen if it is uncomfortable and annoying to use.
