BREAKOUT SESSION DESCRIPTIONS ROUND 1

Number Systems and Nondecimal Bases

Presetner: John Alsup

My presentation will investigate the Mayan Number System, which uses base twenty, the Babylonian Number System, which uses base sixty, and the Egyptian Number System It is a curious and interesting fact that we still use, after 2,500 hundred years, the Babylonian Number System in our method of telling time (Why don't we have 100 seconds in a minute?) It will also review counting and basic operations in base two (binary) that computers use

Leadership All In Requires Learning

Presenter: Gain Paul Gonzalez

In this session come learn what it takes to be ALL IN and how you can easily apply these principles to your life and to education

Building Relationships and Community

Presenter: Sydney Haugland

Building relationships and a community of learners is one of the first steps to setting up your classroom and getting started with your learners. Through research, we learn that when teachers don't take time to build relationships and provide respectful and meaningful work in a classroom, engagement and learning decline or may be nonexistent In this session, we will experience conditions that promote relationships and a positive learning environment

Teaching Fraction Division With Understanding

Presenter: Li Sun

Fractions have always represented a considerable challenge for teachers. Researchers have found that many mathematics teachers’ classroom instructions on fractions are relegated to rules without reasons due to their lack of a firm conceptual understanding of fractions and fraction operations, especially fraction division. The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) highly recommends using representations (e g , manipulatives or visual models) to help students understand fraction magnitudes and fraction operations In this session, we will discuss various ways to teach fraction division with understanding

Family Engagement 101

Presenter: Morgan VonHaden

Research shows that when families and schools work together, everyone benefits! Most importantly, our students feel safer to learn, explore, and grow Family Engagement is a buzzword in education, but what does it really mean? Learn the answer in this session, along with strategies you can use to build relationships with the families of your students and leverage their strengths to support their child, your classroom, and your school

BREAKOUT SESSION DESCRIPTIONS ROUND 3

Teacher Simulation: Parent-Teacher Conference

Presenter: David De Jong

The central issue of this simulation is communication between a teacher and a parent about the performance of the student The problem of practice is that parent-teacher conferences can end up being difficult conversations for the teacher if the teacher assumes the conversation is about the performance of the student while the parent wants it to be about the performance of the teacher

Creating Classroom Collections Beyond the Single Story

Presenter: Rich Mittelstedt

What's the difference between a difficult task and a complex task? Webb Leveling is scale of different levels of thinking demanded (depth of knowledge) to match curriculum standards with how we teach the material. Participants will be introduced to all four of Webb's levels by aligning tasks to each level.

Using texts typical of subject areas (e.g., science, math, social studies), participants will engage their linguistic knowledge to identify patterns of language features (e.g., vocabulary, verb types, sentence structure, text organization) and how they function to make meaning. Ensuring the activity and its texts are representative of South Dakota content standards will help portray the ways students are expected to interpret, apply, and manipulate language to succeed academically This activity will further illuminate how a teacher’s linguistic knowledge can facilitate explicit instruction and support students’ own language awareness To close, discussion will ensue around the benefits in being able to think linguistically as teachers

Students and Mental Health

Presenter: Chesney Olson
