Fractions have always represented a considerable challenge for teachers. Researchers have found that many mathematics teachers’ classroom instructions on fractions are relegated to rules without reasons due to their lack of a firm conceptual understanding of fractions and fraction operations, especially fraction division. The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) highly recommends using representations (e g , manipulatives or visual models) to help students understand fraction magnitudes and fraction operations In this session, we will discuss various ways to teach fraction division with understanding

The central issue of this simulation is communication between a teacher and a parent about the performance of the student The problem of practice is that parent-teacher conferences can end up being difficult conversations for the teacher if the teacher assumes the conversation is about the performance of the student while the parent wants it to be about the performance of the teacher

Using texts typical of subject areas (e.g., science, math, social studies), participants will engage their linguistic knowledge to identify patterns of language features (e.g., vocabulary, verb types, sentence structure, text organization) and how they function to make meaning. Ensuring the activity and its texts are representative of South Dakota content standards will help portray the ways students are expected to interpret, apply, and manipulate language to succeed academically This activity will further illuminate how a teacher’s linguistic knowledge can facilitate explicit instruction and support students’ own language awareness To close, discussion will ensue around the benefits in being able to think linguistically as teachers
