As we embark on our 6th year as an organization in South Dakota, we have much to be proud of as a state.

Our journey began with a small idea, just seven schools, and approximately 65 members. We're thrilled to announce that we now boast over 50 chapters and are approaching 300 members.

In my role as state director, I am immensely proud of the hard work put in by our board of directors and teacher leaders, who are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of educators. None of this would be possible without the incredible support we receive from various businesses and organizations.

Educators Rising SD is committed to providing high-energy events at no cost to our members, and this is made possible through the generosity of our partners. We extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of them for their contributions to bringing our mission to life.

The Educators Rising Leadership Training event was an inspiring day dedicated to nurturing the leadership potential of students within the organization. With a focus on empowering these future educators to be effective leaders in their respective chapters, the event provided a platform for personal and professional growth.

One of the key highlights of the training was the emphasis on teamwork and collaboration. Students learned about the dynamics of team functioning, developing essential skills for working together harmoniously towards common goals. These lessons not only benefit their roles as leaders but also prepare them for successful careers in education.

Furthermore, the event allowed students to delve deeper into the mission and vision of Educators Rising SD. Understanding the organization's values and objectives is essential for creating meaningful change in the educational landscape.

While students were engaged in their leadership training, teacher leaders had the opportunity to connect and exchange ideas. This collaborative atmosphere fosters a strong support network among educators, ensuring they are better equipped to guide and mentor the next generation of teaching professionals.

With over 70 students and 19 teacher leaders coming together, the Educators Rising Leadership Training was a resounding success. It demonstrated the commitment to nurturing leadership in education and building a brighter future for students and educators alike.

The event in Huron, SD was an exciting opportunity for the state officer team of Educators Rising to collaborate with their counterparts from FCCLA, all with the aim of fostering leadership in schools. The joint effort made for a dynamic and enlightening day where high school students from the region could absorb valuable insights from these young leaders.

Not only did the event provide a fantastic platform for sharing knowledge, but it was also a fantastic networking opportunity. This exchange allowed the state officer team to introduce students to the mission and vision of Educators Rising SD.

The highlight of the day was the inspirational keynote speech by Lisa Perry, a powerful speaker who emphasized the importance of leadership in any context. Her words resonated with everyone, reminding them that leadership can be practiced wherever they are.

The Huron event was a day of empowerment, networking, and inspiring messages, showcasing the dedication of these state officers to shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

South Dakota State University Learning Expo

The South Dakota State University Learning Expo, held on September 18th, welcomed a remarkable gathering of over 200 aspiring educators to the campus. The day kicked off with a spirited game of musical chairs alongside the SDSU mascot, setting a lively tone for the event. Students then delved into enlightening breakout sessions led by faculty members from the education department, offering them an opportunity to delve into teaching practices and connect with peers from across the state.

Chick-fil-A provided a delicious catered lunch, and the students were treated to an inspiring keynote speech by Kevin Nelson, emphasizing the profound impact of building meaningful relationships in the field of education. This expo was a dynamic platform for these future educators to learn, engage, and be inspired.

University of South Dakota Learning Expo

On September 25th, the University of South Dakota hosted an informative event that brought over 70 students from the region together to explore the opportunities USD has to offer. The day commenced with an engaging student panel, where attendees gained insights into campus life from their peers and had the chance to ask questions. Following this, students attended two breakout sessions led by USD staff, offering a closer look at various aspects of university life. Exploring the bookstore and dining at the Muenster University Center added to the experience, while a campus tour provided a comprehensive overview of what USD has in store for potential students. It was a day of discovery and inspiration for all.

SANFORD CHILD SERVICES Through a partnership with SD Department of Social Service, Child Care Services and Sanford CHILD services a new opportunity is coming to SD schools. Sanford CHILD services would administer the 120 hours of coursework through a live interactive webinar course. The course would be a year long course. Students interested would be online live with the course instructor and fellow SD students on certain days during the week. The days they don't have class they could be out in their observation classroom learning hands on.

“Education is the most empowering force in the world, and to believe in education is to believe in the future. Millicent was clearly a planner and she believed in education and in Northern,” Schwan said. “We are proud that teaching is the profession for which all other professions depend. Without teachers we would not have a future.”

At its inception in 1901, Northern State University was known as Northern Normal and Industrial School. The admission requirements? Applicants had to be at least 14 years old and have a desire to teach. Now, 120 years later, the Millicent Atkins School of Education continues to distinguish itself as a leader in teacher education, aided by a building remodel and updated scholarship, said Anna Schwan, interim dean of the school of education.

The new scholarship is applicable for a wider range of students than previous design of the Atkins scholarship model, which was tiered. Starting fall 2024, all students, including current, new and transfer students, pursuing a bachelor's degree in elementary education or an associate degree in early childhood education with a high school GPA of 3.5 or above are eligible for the 1901 Scholarship. Those who do not meet the GPA requirements can still receive $1,000 from the scholarship.

Calendar Educators Rising Events are free and offer fantastic opportunities for students to explore the world of education. Our Learning Expos unite students from across the state for a day filled with high-energy activities, including keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and campus tours. The state conference is a jam-packed, one-day experience for our members.
