here was already talk about it in Europe by the mid 16th century. Genoa was becoming a coveted stop for every young Flemish artist who went down to Italy to see and learn. It was said that beyond the thresholds of its mansions and behind the painted facades of its palazzi, treasures were to be found, and special aristocratic families were to be met. Genoese patricians travelled from port to port around the Mediterranean and to the financial centers of Madrid, Piacenza and Antwerp. They bought, they sold, and they supplied soldiers to defend the ambitions of the Spanish crown. The women conducted business while their husbands were absent. And they were elegant, beautiful and modern. To many, including Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, all this bore a very close resemblance to Eden.
e ne parlava in Europa già a metà Cinquecento. Genova stava diventano una tappa desiderata da ogni giovane artista fiammingo, che scendeva in Italia per vedere e imparare. Si diceva che oltre le soglie delle sue dimore e dietro le facciate dipinte di quei palazzi si celassero tesori e si potessero incontrare famiglie aristocratiche speciali. I patrizi genovesi viaggiavano per i porti del Mediterraneo e verso le piazze finanziare di Madrid, Piacenza e Anversa. Commerciavano e fornivano uomini d’armi per difendere le ambizioni della corona di Spagna. Le donne gestivano le aziende in assenza dei mariti. Ed erano eleganti, bellissime e moderne. Tutto ciò era agli occhi dei più, e anche di Vincenzo Gonzaga Duca di Mantova, qualcosa di molto simile all’Eden.
