È IL MOMENTO DI DARE TUTTO IT’S TIME TO GIVE IT ALL

In a recent interview Julio Velasco, the legendary coach of Italy’s volleyball that has won everything, spoke of defeats, in his fascinating Italian-Argentine accent: “I have always accepted to lose, as long as you try your best. I am very understanding if we do not succeed, but I am not understanding at all if we do not try”. Today, in this absurd situation, we all have to face the chance of losing (health, work, affections ...). It is time to give it all, to put all our skills into play to resume the journey with determination and seriousness. This will be the case for the next edition of Expo Riva Schuh: we are already working to ensure that the unusual edition - which will be held from next December 11th - 14th - will be safe and provide the best opportunity to restart the business of the international footwear and leather goods sector. We organizers, with the whole territory of Riva, look forward to welcoming exhibitors and visitors and finally making the wish of these months real: “Everything will be alright”. Just as we try to ‘give everything’ by renewing the magazine that you are reading and that, for decades, has been a point of reference for the information of those who work in the footwear world. A new graphic design, of course, but above all a different organization of the contents that leaves more room for the voices of the trade fair (who organizes it, who exhibits, who buys). To the institutions that support it and to the magnificent territory that hosts it. Without forgetting fashion...

Cosa significa in concreto?

Food service “Needless to say, table cleaning services will be enhanced. We are studying a management of purchases at restaurants and bars without cash. Perhaps also the possibility to purchase in advance vouchers online, and to book some tables or access to self-service. We will push hard to encourage the distribution of meals to exhibitors directly on the stands, so as to reduce the flow to the meal service”.

Waste, management and disposal “We will increase awareness efforts for a correct separate waste collection, which is even more important today: in fact, we must pay particular attention to the disposal of personal protection equipment. We already have a very advanced waste management system, which provides for a double differentiation step: in the structure (different available containers for waste disposal), and downstream (what is collected is further checked and separated before reaching disposal plants”.

Sustainability “We are the only Italian exhibition organisation, and one of the few in Europe, to be certified as sustainable according to the ISO 20121 standard, with constant audits that monitor the preparation and development of the event. What does this actually mean? A separate waste collection that reaches 85%. We recycle or reuse (donating it to other bodies) even the carpet. We have invested in the collection of waste on our own, which is also active during the set-up phase of the event, so we can be sure that each material arrives correctly to disposal facilities. All our restaurants adopt completely biodegradable materials, and plastic is only used for the strict minimum needed. We have been part of the Food For Good circuit for 8 years allowing us to entrust unsold food to the Food Bank which, in turn, redistributes it to those who need it most. All products used for sanitising are Ecolabel certified. About 65% of the invoices we pay to our suppliers will feed the economy of our territory.

Do you have sustainbale projects for the future? Also our real estate project to expand the fair, which will start in the medium/short run, will be sustainable because it will not involve the demolition of existing structures, but improve and optimise the current spaces to which will be added the construction of new structures, using sustainable techniques, materials and concepts. The other developing idea is to equip ourselves in order to close the circle of differentiation inside the company. We will invest in a biodigester plant that will allow us to personally and properly manage biodegradable waste on site (saving CO2 on logistics). We will produce, treat and reuse the waste to fertilise our gardens”.

production activities. With this measure, MiSE wants to support research, development and experimentation of innovative and sustainable solutions, in order to promote the reconversion of production activities towards a circular economy model in which the value of products, materials and resources has a longer life and waste production is reduced to a minimum.

Are there any other important initiatives in favour of SMEs? The project already underway to promote the patentability and enhancement of industrial property by SMEs. To date, € 56 million have been made available with the aim of facilitating the use of patents to protect the technological innovations of SMEs, to enhance the value of trademarks and designs, and also to promote technology transfer projects developed by Universities and Research Institutions. In order to meet the requests of those who were unable to submit applications for contributions, the MiSE has decided to anticipate the issuing of the 2020 planning decree to apply for access to the Patents+, Designs+ and Trademarks+ measure, making an additional € 43 million available. The deadlines for the submission of new applications will be fixed by mid-July. Lastly, the deadline to apply for the “Voucher 3I –Investing In Innovation”, i.e. an incentive programme dedicated to innovative start-ups. With a budget of € 19.5 million for the three-year period 2019-2021, managed by Invitalia, the incentive is intended to support the competitiveness of start-ups by financing the protection, in Italy and abroad, of innovation processes through the industrial property patent.

A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SS2021 Trends

As highlighted in Arsutoria’s TRENDS GUIDE, the most relevant fashion trends for the 2021 spring/summer season are based on the concept of a New Artisanship reinterpreted according to the theme of Artificial Intelligence. An idea that allows grasping the evolution of contemporary aesthetics which combines manual skills, technology and creativity. Technological innovation makes itself available to sustainability and brings it into our daily lives. The colour palette expresses a desire for minimalism, but also the need to focus on innovation, combined with a selection of footwear and accessories that are intended to be inspiration and style ideas.

For a long period of time, we found ourselves closed within a kind of ‘bubble’ outside of both time and space. The lockdown has had a ‘before’ and ‘after’ effect with repercussions that are destined to continue in the long-term. At the same time, it will also see us reflect more deeply on the way we live our lives. Many of us may have noticed how the ‘before’ was characterised by rhythms that were too fast, too much of a whirlwind and, in the end, meaningless. Stopping meant giving new value to time. A reflection, which from the world of fashion first saw the king of elegance, Giorgio Armani, as its protagonist. This past April in fact, in his interview with WWD, he confirmed: “It must be over with fashion as pure communication”. Armani said that from now on he would like to realign the presentation of his collections so that they coincide with the real seasons and he would like to escape dramatization as an end unto itself. That’s not all. The stylist confirmed with conviction: “The current emergency demonstrates how a careful and intelligent slowdown is the only way out. The crisis is an opportunity to restore value to authenticity”. The invitation of Armani to slowdown the times of fashion was soon followed and supported not only by Belgian designer Dries Van Noten in an open letter to the system, but also by the American and English Chambers of Fashion, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (Cfda) headed by Tom Ford, and the British Fashion Council (Bfc).

What will be the footwear that “defines the steps” of the up-and-coming fashion trends for summer 2021? Lineapelle offered us a taste of these creations through its proposals of leathers, fabrics, and colours presented this past February. The unexpected arrival of Covid-19 then ‘froze’ the creative machine, preventing us from learning about - through the leading trade fair events and showroom presentations – the latest footwear innovations for the new season. Starting from the three macro-trends highlighted by the Lineapelle fashion committee – Enhanced Basics, New Romanticism, and Manual Processes - we delved into the models, volumes, and trends that will characterise footwear for the coming summer, with the precious help of five important sector designers.

MARKET

Post CRV

and customer loyalty. This means professionalism by sales personnel, post-sales service, and a serious offering”. Finally, another thing to consider is that the Covid experience has led to profound changes in the purchasing choices of consumers, who are more attentive not only to the quality/price ratio as a consequence of this period of on-going economic difficulty, but also inclined to purchase products conceived to last over time, instead of those that tend to wear out over the course of one season. Likewise, comfort will be an important variable in purchasing decisions. “In the period immediately following the lockdown in our stores in Sicily, Calabria, and Malta, slippers for the home were our number-one selling item, but also slip-ons for the seaside and sports-related items – confirms Nino Scaffidi (Killin). Without a doubt, comfort will be one of the most important factors in purchasing choices, but it is also important to consider that the upheaval created by Covid will lead to greater attentiveness to the quality of what we are buying and the potential use of the footwear. Probably, fewer purchases will be made, but with greater care and closer to real everyday needs”. This is also confirmed by Claudio Alessi (Bata): “Customers search for quality in products, but also pay attention to price and promotions. Without a doubt, there is now also a lot of attention on hygiene standards, so our standards, which were already high, have been adapted to satisfy present-day needs. We also see that since we reopened on 18 May, customers like to compare and receive assistance in their purchasing choices by our personnel, but above all they desire to see and ‘touch with their hand’ the product, so they can make the right choice”. What is the best way for distribution to recover quickly and more strongly from this troubled period? “In the era of fast fashion, where everything moves quickly, this slowdown dictated by processes could help us to find greater creative momentum, while dedicating even greater attention to the needs of our customers”, is the message of Claudio Alessi from Bata. For Nino Scaffidi (Killin), instead, the answer lies in staying committed to customers and instilling a rapport of trust with them, a formula that has been rewarding this company with positive numbers since 1986.

Many people say that they want to slow down the fashion times and no longer focus on frenetic consumption, but on quality. Do you think this will happen? “I don’t know. It’s very hard to say. Personally, I hope it happens because I think we buy much more than we need. Too much. But profound changes in people’s habits are almost always dictated by strong motivations, and it will be necessary to understand if this pandemic will actually generate strong motivations in people to reduce their consumption, and lead them to choose more expensive, but more long-lasting products. Without considering the fact that there is also a ‘buying opportunity’ discourse to keep in mind: not everyone in the world can afford to choose whether to buy a $20 or $100 shoe.” What do you think could be the next real and profound innovation to change the shoe design process? “If you notice, the quality and reliability of any product, even lowcost ones, has grown a lot in recent years. I think digital tools have played a crucial role in this. They have changed and will continue to change the shoemaking experience. Exactly what the next big innovation will be, I really don’t know. If I knew, I would invest in it and retire! On the manufacturing side, I see more and more solutions that will reduce labour and increase the uniformity of product quality. Robotics and automaton will play a larger role. I also expect a lot from 3D printing, which has been promising great things, but has yet to have a profound impact on the mass market. Increasingly accurate digital prototype/model design tools are helping designers to ‘see’ the product in a highly realistic manner before it is actually made. This brings significant advantages in terms of cooperation, speed and saving of resources. We should also consider less glamorous tools such as PLM software or cutting machines which, however, help companies to remain profitable and reduce waste.” The latest innovation that blew your mind away? “As I said before, I cannot point to one idea or process, but rather a steady stream of incremental changes that result in higher quality shoes with higher performance, better fit and a more affordable price. Wearable robotic exoskeletons are a type of innovation that has intrigued me recently. The use of these ergonomic production technologies [which allow a reduction in the accident rate, a decrease in ergonomic issues and greater precision in some activities - editor’s note] is an excellent example of collaborative automation. A fascinating innovation that, however, I must say, few of our customers are interested in right now.”

Very black, very white, but above all very white/black tones characterise sneakers for the coming winter, playing around with contrasts, often emphasised by the use of different materials, while outsoles are boxed or with a chunky construction.
