If it’s “breaking news” (in other words, if it’s happening at the moment), the reporter goes onto the streets to look for details – most of the time together with a photographer. However, the story can also be checked on the computer or by phone. After gathering all the information, the reporter writes the news story.

The text goes from the assistant editor (or copywriter) to the sub-editor (if there is any) and then to the editor. They check if the news article is clear and if it has all the necessary information. The editor is in charge of the newspaper section and has the final word on page design.

Early in the morning, the news editor (also called chief reporter) decides on stories for the next issue. Based on the suggestions left by the editor the previous evening, and on the news published in the morning. The news editor then distributes the assignments among the reporters.

Some staff members are not directly involved in the production of a new article, but they coordinate the newspaper (or some newspaper sections) as a whole. The executive editor supervises the editors and takes part in administrative decisions, and the editor in chief helps to set the style and overall checking of the article, for example.
The sub-editor is active on every working front, and can work as an editor or chief reporter if they are absent.

The page designers also take part in the meeting with the news editor at the beginning of the day. While the reporter checks the news story, the page designer starts deciding on the design of the page. To do so, the art director and the publisher – who help to decide on the most important stories – guide the page designer.
Another contribution to the page layout comes from the advertising department, which delineates the spaces reserved for ads.

PHOTOGRAPHY TEAM
The photography department used to remain apart from the newsroom, although it has similar roles to the copy desk department: the news editor distributes the news items among the available photographers, and the editor supervises all staff and selects the best pictures.

At the end of the day, the team gets together again at the conference table to decide on the front page. Executive directors choose the best news stories, editors write the headlines, the photography editor selects the best pictures and the page designer plans the layout of the page based on the art director’s guidelines.

The senior position is usually the editorial director. In addition to supervising the daily routine of a newsroom, the editorial director must handle administrative issues as well. For example, they have to keep an eye on competing news outlets, advertisers, and on new talent in the job market.
