Memorial Day Services, Farnham, NY

Memorial Day Services were held at Veteran’s Park in the Village of Farnham, with opening remarks by Mayor Jere Hoisington. Fr. Frank Kadryna of Parish of Our Lady Brant, NY gave the invocation, followed by reciting of the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE by all in attendance (lead by Village Trustee George Cordia) and the playing of THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER.

The guest speaker that morning was Sr. Neil I. Ross, US Navy Retired. Neil’s speech included a powerful reminder that each of “our fallen veterans did not get to enjoy any of the things that we are free to enjoy each and every day. The purpose of Memorial Day is to dedicate a period of remembrance to our fallen heroes who sacrificed so much.”

An Honor Guard from the American Legion Newcomb Long Post 928 performed the 21 Gun Salute and “TAPS” was solemnly played by Veteran Joe Tomlinson. As is tradition, a memorial wreath and six flags were placed at the base of the Veteran’s monument in honor of the six branches of Military service. Special Associate Minister of Holy Cross Lutheran Church Lynn Whitworth gave the Benediction, encouraging us all to recite the Lord’s Prayer in unity, which we did and were honored to do so. Refreshments were available at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, immediately following the services.

Recently, The Whirlwind Veterans & Warrior Retreat hosted the Erie County AMVETS organization and Veterans from the Buffalo VA for the new flagpole dedication. The large flagpole was donated by AMVETS and will be a permanent marker at the Retreat.

**MONTHLY COLUMN**

Summer is here and nothing signals summer in Erie County like boating. Whether you are visiting the Erie Basin Marina, fishing in the Niagara River, cruising through Canalside or motoring to the Point Abino Lighthouse, Western New York offers an abundance of waterways providing outstanding recreational opportunities for boating enthusiasts.

Just as there are “rules of the road” that govern the safe flow of traffic for vehicles, there are “rules of the waterways” that govern the safe maneuvering of boats. I encourage all recreational boaters and jet skiers to know the risks, learn the rules and be prepared before taking the helm this boating season.

New York State requires all persons are at least 10 years of age to operate a motorboat, as well as all personal watercraft operators, born on or after May 1, 1996, successfully complete a state-approved 8-hour boater education classroom course and proctored exam. According to research conducted by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) in 70 percent of all boating fatalities the operator had not taken a boating safety class. A list of an approved Boater Safety Course near you can be found at nysparks.com/recreation/boating.

State law also requires that any boat motor-driven, operated on NYS waters must be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). We ask that you take this opportunity to keep a portion of registration fees in Erie County by registering your boat in person at any one of our Auto Bureau offices located throughout Erie County. Proof of identity, date of birth and proof of ownership are required to register a boat. Under New York law no one may operate a vessel on the waters of NYS while impaired or intoxicated through the consumption of either alcohol or drugs. Alcohol impairs one’s ability to function properly and is a factor in 30 percent of all boating related fatalities. In an effort to send a clear message to our young boaters, New York State has enacted legislation, for those under 21 years of age, providing for the suspension or revocation of operating privileges if caught drinking while operating a vessel.

One last safety tip, and possibly the most important, is to always wear a life jacket and make sure your passengers do as well. Seventy-nine percent of all recreational boat drownings occurred when boaters did not wear a life jacket. Wear It! A life jacket will help ensure you and everyone on board returns home safely.

I Remember When

I always remember as a pre teen playing at someone else's house but never at mine. The Rice family lived next door and Bill Rice had the largest sand box in town. We spent a lot of time pushing our toy cars around in the sand. Bill's mother, Gladys ,was a kind lady and invited me to dinner once in awhile. I remember Bill liked mash potatoes because when the dish, partially full, reached me after Bill had dished out, there were none left. But Gladys had more. I was really impressed with the fact that Bill's father Ernie was the Fire Chief and that he had a hunting dog, a Brittany Spaniel called Freckles. Bill later in his busy life became a 60 year Fireman. OH!! yes, as we grew older, we enjoyed playing kick the can and ollie ollie over .Picture: L.R. Donald P. Clark of Derby and Indian Lake NY passed away June 16, 2023, at the age of 80 yrs., Husband of Katherina Kobler. Father of Amanda (Scott) Youngers and Donald Clark. Grandfather of Joseph and Catherine Youngers. Brother of the late James (Lucretia) Clark, Robert (Theresa) Clark and Mary (late Mark) Coia. Don was a retired History teacher from Lake Shore Central, Angola, NY. His camp in the ADR mountains was a refuge where he would pursue his love of hunting, fishing, canoeing and sitting by the fireside with a beloved dog. As we celebrate another Independence Day, we should stop and remember the reasons behind this holiday. Today it’s a day for summer picnics, outdoor fun and fireworks.

For our forefathers it was a life or death situation. They fought for the liberties we often take for granted; they fought for freedom from oppression; they fought to be able to govern themselves. And they crafted a Constitution that still stands firm and guides a nation founded in democracy.

As Americans we should take a moment on each July 4th to pledge a new allegiance to our country and reaffirm our vows to keep this nation forever free.
