It is with great sadness that we share the loss of a true legend. Our community, our family, and countless friends mourn the passing of a remarkable man whose warmth, strength, and unwavering spirit made the world a better place.
R. Ferris Randall, age 98, of Eden, New York died Friday, November 14, 2025. Ferris was the beloved husband of Connie Newton (nee: Miller) and the late Ellen Randall (nee: Roberts). Dearest father of Stephen (Diana) Randall, Catherine (Michael) Nedimyer, Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Caston and the late Deborah. Loved “Pop” of Anne, John, Laura, Stephen, Greg, Andrew, Caleb, Hannah, Michael, Em, Joel, Graham, and Collin. Great Grandfather of 14. Ferris was the stepfather to his bride Connie’s children, William (Diane) Newton and Jayne (James) Walker.
Robert Ferris Randall was born April 15, 1927 in Gowanda, NY. He was the son of Robert Bentley Randall and Ruth Labell Abbey Randall. He moved to 2823 Maple Ave., Eden when he was 3 years old. Ferris attended the old Eden Grade Schools and graduated in 1944 from Eden High School. He joined the Navy in January 1945, trained at Sampson Naval Base, Geneva, NY and transferred to Naval Air Base Corpus Christi, TX in April 1945. He was stationed at Auxiliary Naval Air Base, Cabiness Field in charge of the Personnel Office. Upon completion of WW2, Ferris reenlisted for 4 years in September of 1945 and transferred to Naval Air Base, San Diego, California, attached to The Staff of Carrier Air Group Five (Valley Forge Aircraft Carrier CV45). He was discharged in September 1949 and joined his Grandfather F. N. Randall in the insurance business located in the theatre building on Buffalo Street in Hamburg, NY.
On August 6, 1950 Ferris married Ellen Ruth Roberts of Hamburg, making their home on Maple Avenue, Eden, NY. They were parents of the late Deborah Anne (nee Gasper), Stephen Ferris, Catherine Ruth (nee Nedimeyer) and Elizabeth Ellen (nee Caston). In 1953 Ferris and his grandfather opened an insurance office in Eden.
He also began Real Estate and moved the business to his home at 2816 Roswell Pkwy., in Eden. While there,
Donald Spencer joined his Trotters Firm as a Real Estate Salesman, and later became a partner. In 1962 they purchased the Eden Marine Trust Company Building and made that their headquarters. Ferris was one of the founders of the Eden Historical Society, and was Town of Eden Historian for a number of years. He was the Assessor for the towns of Eden, Portville, and Perrysburg. He was a 35 year member of the Eden Fire Dept., Life Member of The Bog Trotters Rifle and Pistol Club of Eden, Trustee of Cooperative Insurance Co. of WNY and Life Member of the American Legion Post 880, Eden for 75 years. He enjoyed the hobbies of fishing with his life Ellen, target shooting and studying Family History. As an amateur Genealogist he compiled and printed 20 family histories. Ferris is the author of “Ancestors and Descendants Of Snow Randall The Quaker 16091973”, published in 1973. His wife, Ellen Roberts passed away following a lengthy illness in the Absolute Care Nursing Home in Eden. Respite in Eden and a Very Special Session
Imagine your loved one is stricken with Alzheimer’s Disease, a progressive disorder that takes away their memory and changes their thinking and reasoning skills, eventually leading to inability to carry out daily tasks. You’re feeling overwhelmed and need help coping with the behavioral changes, memory issues, and language difficulties they are having. Let alone that you barely have time to take care of your own needs or social activities.
There is an assistance for you in this area: the Alzheimer’s Caregiver Respite Program held at the Eden United Methodist Church. It’s a chance for you as a caregiver to rest, recharge, take care of doctors’ appointments and other errands, while your loved one is a guest and enjoys art, music, and socialization activities along with a warm meal, all in a safe and loving environment. Sometimes there’s a gentle therapy dog or even a goat that comes to visit them! Or a roving accordionist and even a harpist playing background music. In operation for the last ten years, this is a town program supported financially by the Alzheimer’s Association, Erie County, the state of NY, and private donations. Many an guest has gotten much joy and stimulation through attending this respite program. A shining example of this special love being given to a guest happened at the June 18, 2025, program when we celebrated Ron Richards, Eden High School Class of ’58. That was one of many winning years for the high school crosscountry track team; in fact, it was a perfect year: in their races, they achieved all perfect scores and won every race. They also won their 4th consecutive sectional title. The following year, the teams lost only one race, to West Seneca. They would run literally across the countryside, through local wooded areas and town streets.
Though Ron now is an Alzheimer’s patient and guest at the program, he enjoys the respite activities while his family has a break to take care of themselves. One of his teammates, Bob Maltby, Class of ’59, also came by to visit the program that day. As the team captain for 4 years, he and the others team members Gary Nobbs, George Graevoc and Jim Agle enjoyed reminiscing about the high school years and looking through old yearbooks.
There were 18 guests that day, the most ever to that date. It’s estimated that since the program started in May of 2015 there have been almost 10,000 hours of respite time given to about 200 caregivers with 20,000 volunteer hours and 1,400 songs sung along to, with guitars, accordions, pianos and ukuleles. If you have loved one who has dementia, or if you want to help make a difference in the lives of those who do and their loved ones, please consider offering your time as a volunteer to be part of this important service to our neighbors in need.
The Eden Alzheimer’s Caregiver Respite Program takes place on the third Wednesday of each month, from 1030am-230pm at the Eden United Methodist Church at 2820 East Church Street.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Eden
On October 29th the senior community of Eden was treated to another informational seminar brought by the new community group Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Eden. The timely topic addressed many of the changes in Medicare and Medicaid and was presented by two of the area’s experts on the topic. Bill Daniels of Erie County Department of the Aging addressed many of the changes in Medicare coverages and how they are impacting seniors in this enrollment period. Rob Brandon of Independent Living Center gave insights and belayed myths around Medicaid and how it works and who is eligible and for what purposes. The audience of over 45 seniors also heard from Jennifer Gunia from Harmonia Collaborative Care, a partner with Neighbors Helping Neighbors, who outlined how Harmonia is available as a connection point to available services offered by Erie County and New York State. The program was introduced by Kevin Karstedt who thanked everyone for coming and informed attendees of the formation of Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Eden and how the group will continue brining informational programs that are important for Eden residence. The program is available on the Neighbors Helping Neighbors YouTube channel and includes contact information for the speakers.

Mike Peters rose to the top of the Motorcycle and Sled field during the 2025 WDRA Summit World Championships presented by SunCoast Performance. The talented New York native has qualified and participated in five world championship events since 2017, including back-to-back invitations for the WDRA Summit World Championships presented by SunCoast Performance, since the introductory Motorcycle and Sled class last season. Peters, representing Lancaster Motorplex, admitted that seemingly minor ontrack mistakes left him lacking in the win light department during prior races. Yet, he maintained an admirable outlook on those experiences.Peters has proven himself to be a fierce competitor, racking up eight track championships on his now-backup Kawasaki before upgrading to a 2011 Suzuki Hayabusa last winter. He claimed six wins this season to wrap up his ninth track championship and made the 1,000-mile and seventeen-and-a-half-hour trek to Montgomery International Dragway during what would be a life-changing event. The final round was a chance for redemption against Fitzpatrick (Mid America Dragway), and it became a close battle with only three thousandths separating the pair’s reaction times. Peters ran 5.594 on his 5.59 dial-in for the $5,000 Motorcycle World Championship win, while Fitzpatrick ran two thousandths under his dial-in. In addition to the cash and long-awaited title, Peters left with a WDRA Champion card and WDRA Rod trophy.
As for what’s next? Peters is still waiting for this reality to sink in fully, but would love to return next season to defend the World Championship honors. However, no matter if he prints winning time slips or finds himself a few thousandths behind at the finish line, a smile will remain because for him, it’s all part of being at the greatest place on earth…a racetrack.

A THOUGHT TO REMEMBER…
“I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual.” --Henry David Thoreau
While we celebrate Thanksgiving next week it would be wise to keep in mind this thought from Thoreau. We have so much to be grateful for in our lives, but we often forget to express our thanks or to even think how lucky we are.
Some people keep “Gratitude Journals” where each day they record something for which they are thankful. Whether you make it an actual written record or merely take time at the end of the day to reflect on what you received that day, this is a mindful way to keep gratitude uppermost in our minds. We should be happy to realize the blessings in our lives and how they have helped to shape us.
Our “thanksgiving” should be perpetual. Share your gratitude on Thanksgiving -- and every day!
