Music fills the air so sweet, Kokomo Time, can’t be beat. Guitars hum and voices blend, Like family, until the end. Drums that thump a steady beat, Dancing shoes upon our feet. Laughing loud, singing strong, Where we all truly belong. More than music, deep and true, Kokomo Time, me and you. A special bond, a happy sound, Family found, on hallowed ground.

Legislator Mills Recognizes Collins Volunteer Fire Department on 100th Anniversary
Minority Leader and Erie County Legislator John Mills presented a proclamation to the Collins Volunteer Fire Department on the occasion of the organization’s 100th anniversary. The Fire Company was formally established in April 1925 with the earliest equipment being a horsedrawn vehicle, outfitted with two 80-gallon tanks of water mixed with acid and soda capsules.
The Fire Department has relied on the generosity and support of the community, hosting events such as dances, carnivals, dinners, raffles, craft shows and its annual fund drive to sustain its mission.
“The firefighters with the Collins Volunteer Fire Department dedicate their lives to the protection of life and property, taking extraordinary risks to ensure their communities remain safe, as they have for generations,” said Legislator John Mills.
The Collins Volunteer Fire Department formally recognized its 100th anniversary on October 4, 2025 with a gathering where the organization also dedicated its new Truck 7.
Lawtons Volunteer Fire Company

The Lawtons Volunteer Fire Company is currently celebrating its 80th year as one of the Town of North Collins’ three fire districts. The Company officially was organized on May 10, 1945. Formerly under the protection of the Village of North Collins Company, interested residents of the Hamlet of Lawtons met at Velzy’s garage and elected Harlen Velzy as its first chief. The Town Supervisor at that time was Paul Bantle, and he was able to obtain two Army surplus trucks from New York City to be painted and used as fire trucks.
In September 1947, Land was purchased for a Firehall and on July 6, 1948 a new hall was dedicated.
First members of the Lawtons Fire Company were Chief Velzy, Fred Mackmer, Assistant Chief, Merrill Lawton, president, Jason Luther, vice-president, Harmon Taylor, secretary, and Jennings Pickens, treasurer. There were 22 members at this time.

“Be not disturbed at being misunderstood, be disturbed rather at not being understanding.” -- Chinese Proverb
It is not always easy to understand another person — his thoughts, his actions, his beliefs may not agree with yours. In fact, the actions, emotions and thoughts of others can often leave us confused and baffled.
Even if we can’t understand, wouldn’t it be a good idea to try not to judge too quickly? We need to remember that no two human beings are alike in their thoughts and emotions; no two human beings are molded by exactly the same experiences. We need to try to understand and learn as much as possible about the feelings and point of view of the other person.
It’s not an easy thing to do, but attempting to understand can prevent differences in viewpoint from becoming needlessly distorted. At the very least, it is a worthy start toward understanding and worth the effort.
