Each month GLP students demonstrating good character are welcomed into the kingdom of character. The GLP focuses on a different character trait each month. The following students were crowned as the kings and queens of self-control. They were invited to a special after school program to celebrate their accomplishments. Eden Fire Company is the organization that provides fire protection and emergency services for all of the residents in the East Eden Fire District,while assisting neighboring communities and being assisted by other fire companies through mutual aid. Our firefighters undergo rigorous training to become members, donating countless hours learning the latest techniques to protect you and your families

Hopefully you have been fortunate enough to avoid using the services we provide, but we assure you that our staffs of VOLUNTEERS are available to serve you 24 hours a day if the occasion arises.

If you have not already sent in your contribution, one of our firefighters will call on your home on the evening of June 19th, 6:30 - 9:00 pm.

Last year one of the pieces of equipment purchased with funds raised through our Fund Drives is the LUCAS DEVICE.

The LUCAS device is a mechanical chest compression-decompression system which enabled automated and continuous closed chest compression, LUCAS can be used on adult cardiac arrest patients who fit into the device. With the purchase of the Lucas device will be able to assist the Eden Emergency Squad when they are dispatched for a cardiac emergency in the East Eden community. This will provide the Eden Emergency Squad with a second Lucas device for the Town of Eden.

Let's hear it for the Southtowns Catholic School track team! At the Diocesean Track Meet on Tuesday, May 16th, our students took home 1st place overall in the Bishop McNulty Division. Our boys brought home 2nd place and our girls 1st.

Eden Family Dental has invested in two new pieces of equipment that we are excited to utilize for our patients.

Our doctors and assistant have been trained to use a digital scanner to view our patient's teeth in 3D. This is a no-radiation scanner and, in many cases, can eliminate the need to take goopy impressions of the mouth. This makes our appointments quicker and less risk of gagging during impressions.

These scans transmit within seconds to our in-house dental mill, which employs CAD-CAM (computer aided design and manufacturing) to fabricate ceramic crowns within 40 minutes. This allows our patients to be fitted with their permanent dental crown at one visit, rather than returning in 1-2 weeks or wearing a temporary crown.

Joan Carol Staby passed on June 7 following a brief period of declining health. She passed peacefully in Brighton, MI with family by her side. Joan was born in Chicago to Herbert and Dorothy Berhens. Her early life was spent growing up in western Chicago when she very young. Her family moved to Montclair Ave. in Glen Ellyn Illinois where they had a very happy home which was shared with her younger brothers John and Gregg who have predeceased her. She attended school in Glen Ellyn and was a 1951 graduate of Glenbard High school where she was a cheerleader for a very powerful high school football team. She always talked fondly of days growing up and her early years were quite idyllic despite growing up during World War 2. Unfortunately for her family, her father passed of cancer when she was 16 years old. Joan had a deep and special relationship with her father so losing him at this tender age was very difficult for her. It ultimately made her a very strong and independent woman. Upon graduation from High School Joan would board a train by herself at 17 years and head to Oxford, Ohio where she attended Miami of Ohio university where she would graduate with a BA in English. This is where she would meet the love of her life Richard “Dick” Staby at Mac and Joes restaurant where she worked as a waitress to support herself. They married shortly after college and remained a very loving couple up until Dick’s passing in March of 2011. Upon graduating and getting married Joan and Dick initially lived in Kitzigen Germany while Dick served in the army. Joan always spoke fondly of these early days of marriage, experiencing Germany, and making ends meet by cooking on a 2-burner hotplate. It is also where their first child Kristen Margret was born in December 1957. Upon leaving Germany Joan and Dick moved back state side originally living in Tonawanda and eventually building a home that they would live in until July 2022. In July

1961 her second child Lisa Lynn would be born followed by a son Scott Richard in June 1967. Joan was a vibrant part of the fabric in Eden. Eden was a wonderful place to raise a family. Joan was always actively involved in local groups that gave back to the community. Joan was involved in the Eden Garden Club, helping to design and build the park that stands on the four corners of Eden. She was also involved in many other community groups including the chamber of commerce, the Eden up to date club, the Boys and Girls club, a local dulcimer group, and was a very active member of the Eden United Methodist church. Joan was also a wonderful teacher. While she had children at home, she often substituted at Eden elementary while she completed her masters in education at Buffalo State College. When her children became school aged, she took a job as a full-time teacher in the Hamburg school district teaching second, third and fourth grades for almost 20 years. Despite all this hard work there was always a home cooked dinner on the able every night at 6PM. She took great pride in being a schoolteacher and mother. She also always maintained spectacular gardens at their home of over 50 years. Dogs were also a large part of her life including her English Setter Sam who was a great comfort to her after Dick’s passing. She also raised several Irish Setters that went on to be champions. In her later years Joan and Dick took great pleasure in spending winters in the home they purchased on Anna Maria Island Florida. After Dick’s passing Joan remained very active in the local community and took great pleasure and support from all the friends and family in WNY that she loved so dearly. In the last year of her life, due to declining health, Joan moved to Michigan to be near family. I was thankful for these days and the memories shared during this time. Joan was predeceased by her husband Richard (2011) and her daughter Lisa (2017). She is survived by a daughter Kristen (Chris) Rembold and son Scott (Amy) Staby, 11 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. Additionally, Joan leaves behind many friends in the Eden community that were such a great comfort to her. George and Diana Gravoc who did so much for her. Eden, NY – Mary E. Heckler (Hagerman), age 72, passed away at her home on June 13th, 2023 surrounded by family. Mary was born to Tom and Trudy Hagerman. She was raised in Murphysboro and Springfield, IL. She was a graduate of Rochester High School in Rochester, IL. Mary moved to the Buffalo, NY area in 1979 and proudly made Buffalo her home for her and her family. Mary was an amazing mother, grandmother (affectonately known as “Nonny” to her grandchildren) and animal mother. She is survived by her three children, Brian (Beth) Heckler of Wheatield, NY, Sarah (Doug) Kopp of Buffalo, NY and Diane Heckler Smith of Buffalo, NY, her two grandchildren, Madison Dzubella (Cory Wantuck) of North Collins, NY and Kellan Heckler of Wheatield, NY and her furry companion Elly. She is also survived by her six siblings who dearly looked up to their big sister, Chuck Hagerman, Janet (Mark) Goodrich, Bob (Charlotte) Hagerman, Jim (Nancy) Hagerman, Barb (Gary) Lawler and Cindy (Jim) Carter. Mary had many amazing friends and some very special girlfriends. She also had several amazing men that she shared her life and love with over the years. Including her first husband and father of her children, Chuck Heckler (deceased, who’s obituary referred to Mary as his “lifelong sweetheart”), Rick Koningisor, Tim Stepniak and Sherman Curry (deceased). Mary was special. She loved all living things, from people, to animals, to plants, everything. And everyone loved Mary, it was easy! She made all feel welcome. Mary was a worker. She loved working. Mary spent much of her work career in retail, helping people with home decoratng (something she had a special talent for in her personal life, too!) from flooring to furniture and most everything thing else related. She worked at Decorator Carpets in Hamburg, NY untl her passing. She loved her work family.. In lieu of a monetary memorial or sending flowers or plants, maybe consider rescuing an animal or plant or piece of furniture and give it a new and better life ... and think of Mary. In her passing, Mary contnues to give to others by donatng her body to science. Mary’s family will gather with friends at her house on Saturday June 17th, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm to Celebrate Mary’s life.

Our beloved husband and father went to Heaven June 6, 2023. Donald was born in Buffalo, NY, and attended Angola High School. Upon graduation, he proudly served our country with the US Navy for 4 years. He earned a Bachelors degree in business from the University of Buffalo. His career in aerospace was spent mostly at Bell Aerospace in Niagara Falls, NY, followed by employment at Perkin Elmer, and Hughes Aircraft. Donald's absolute favorite pastime was spending time with his family! He also was an avid fisherman, big fan of the Buffalo Bills, and New York Yankees, and loved to read. Donald is survived by his loving family, wife of 72 years, Elizabeth Gros Webb; daughters, Kathryn Hubbard, and her husband, Rodney, of N. Collins, NY, Sharon Webb of Raleigh, NC; brothers-inlaw, William Gros of Wheaton, IL, Steven Gros, and his wife, Judy, of Orchard Park, NY; and several nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Webb; sister-in-law, Patricia Webb; and his brother-in-law, Fred Gros. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 22 at 6:30pm in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service, beginning at 5:30pm. As we celebrate Father’s Day this weekend, give thanks to your father for all he’s done for you -- and for all the things you have learned from him. Maybe he taught you how to bat or how to catch a fish, use power tools, balance a check book or drive a car...

But more important may be the lessons you learned about life just by observing how he interacted with people, by his work ethic, his integrity, and the importance he put on honesty. Those are lessons you may not have even been aware of learning. But you’ll know that they have become deeply ingrained in you when you pass those values along to your own children.
