North Collins Eagle Energy Day

Eagle Energy Day is an initiative started by biology teacher Mrs. Lisa Brosnick to serve others in our community by planting, weeding, cleaning up and painting around the town and village of North Collins. Now in its fifth year, the program is specifically designed to help veterans, seniors and the disabled with home and garden projects they otherwise may not be able to complete due to their limitations.

This year, groups of students and their teachers signed up for various projects, leaving their mark with a sign reading that Eagle Energy was here! Their good works are evident throughout the town, from the fire hall to the high school and several homes and businesses in between.

Eden Jr/Sr High School Student, Wins at New York State SkillsUSA Conference

Students from Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES (E2CCB) recently traveled to the New York State Fairgrounds to take part in the New York State SkillsUSA Conference. Combining their classroom knowledge and handson experience, the students competed against other schools in exercises judged by industry professionals. Some participated in individual activities while others completed exercises as teams.

Thirteen E2CCB students placed in the competition, including a student from Eden Jr/Sr High School. Alex Sacilowski came in first place in the Employment Application Process competition.

He will be joining two other E2CCB students for the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, KY, June 25-29.

“I think Alex is the embodiment of the skills employers are looking for,” according to Olivia Keisic, the school counselor and SkillsUSA advisor at the Carrier Educational Center in Angola. “He did an excellent job preparing for the competition and that shows by his win.”

For juniors, the event is a new experience that will help prepare them for next year's conference. For seniors, it is a great way to finish the time in their Career & Technical Education classes. "The SkillsUSA members who attended from our center all did an outstanding job getting ready for our trip to Syracuse," says Keisic.

"The willingness to take on an extra challenge at the end of senior year shows how dedicated and passionate they are about their field of study."

SkillsUSA is a national organization that prepares students for the workforce. Members have opportunities to earn scholarships, network, participate in community service projects and grow as leaders.

Moe is married to Billy and they have two daughters, Alyssa 17 and Maddie 14. Moe is an avid animal lover with their two dogs, the family lives in Eden. Moe drove Eden school bus for over 10 years and was well loved by all her students.

Moe was diagnosed with ALS in February 2017. She was selected to be the first recipient in the US to receive the new drug Radicava.

She receives her infusions 10 days in a row then 14 days off. She will stay on this 10/14 day schedule for the rest of her life. The cost for each daily infusion is $1,100/ day.

Erie County Announces Household Hazardous Waste Collection Dates

The Erie County Department of Environment & Planning, in cooperation with the Northwest and Northeast Southtowns Solid Waste Management Boards, has announced “Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days” will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 in the New Era Field parking lots off of Abbott Road in Orchard Park and Saturday, August 11, 2018 at the ECC North Campus in Williamsville. Both C events, which will be open to all Erie County residents between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., will allow for the safe disposal of hazardous items that cannot be thrown out M in the regular garbage, helping to reduce pollution and the potential contamination of groundwater. Due to high demand, please allow approximately one hour Y to be unloaded. “These annual collection events are a great way for homeowners CM to rid their properties of potentially hazardous household waste in a responsible way. Over the past several years our Department of Environment and Planning, MY along with their partners, has played a large role in preventing these wastes from CY entering landfills or groundwater,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz.

“By working together we can have a greater impact on protecting our environment CMY today and for the future. I thank DEP and their partners, as well as the thousands of residents who have participated in these waste collection events, for pitchingK in to create a cleaner, greener Erie County.”

Items which can be brought for disposal include: Pesticides, Fertilizers, Pool and Household Chemicals/Cleaners (limit 2 gallons or 20 pounds); Oil-based paints, Spray cans (limit 10 gallons); Paint Thinner, Stripper and Solvents (limit 2 gallons); Batteries (lead acid & rechargeable); Oil, Gasoline, Kerosene, Antifreeze (limit 10 gallons); Mercury (thermometers, thermostats, liquid). Items which will not be accepted include: Latex paint: latex paint does not need to be disposed of as household hazardous waste and should not be brought to these events; Automobile tires; Computers and other electronics; Appliances; Pharmaceuticals; Fluorescent bulbs; Commercial/industrial wastes. Americans have set aside a day to remember its fallen soldiers since the end of the Civil War. Memorial Day should be a reverent day, a day of gratitude and prayer in memory of all those who have died to preserve freedom and honor for our country. Those who have died in this nation’s wars did so in the unfulfilled hope that their sacrifice would bring enduring peace. It is a sacred day.

While we remember those who gave all to protect our nation, we also salute those who serve today. The members of our armed forces deserve our unquestioned support for their dedication… for their willingness to put their personal lives on hold… for their skills and their belief in the freedoms that founded this nation.
