Eden Mizuno 14U Wins Championship at Pace Bootleggers Spring Invitational Tournament

On March 12th, members of Eden 14U volleyball team were crowned champions at the Pace Bootleggers Spring Invitational Tournament held at Victor Junior High in Rochester. The win gave them their third championship in 6 tournaments played.

In pool play, the team went 8 and 0 in games played, with a 4-0 match record. Along the way to the playoff round, they defeated teams from Lockport and Rochester, earning them the #1 pool seed.

In the semifinals, Eden faced a familiar foe in Lockport 14U Black. Eden made quick work of the match, sweeping the first 2 games of best of three match and vaulting them in the finals.

In the finals, Eden locked horns with the host team, Pace Bootlegger 14-1. The matchup saw the 19th ranked team in country (Eden) taking on the 22nd ranked team in the country (Pace Bootlegger). In the first game, Pace took the match lead with a 25-23 victory, erasing a 23-21 deficit by scoring the last four points of the game. Eden evened the match by winning the 2nd game by a score of 25-22. In the deciding game of the match, Pace was a point away from winning the championship, as they led Eden 14-11 and was serving for the match. Eden fought off 3 game points to tie the score. They then rallied to win the last two points of the match, winning the third, and deciding game 16-14.

On the day, Eden finished with an unblemished match record of 6-0 and a game record of 12 wins and 1 loss.

Players who competed on the team this past weekend (and their hometowns) are: Connor Booth (Hamburg), Nate Golding (Orchard Park), Hudson Harris (OP), Cole Ignaszak (West Seneca), Jake Janus (OP), Greg Jubulis (OP), Ian Rauh (OP), Ethan Weislo (OP), Noah Weislo (OP) and Kyle Zelasko (OP).

Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon and Urban Valet Dry Cleaner President Eric Pyne remind the community that gently used or new gowns and dresses will be collected Monday, March 13 through Thursday, April 13 for the 8th annual Prom Dress Drive. Each year the community generously donates more than a thousand dresses to ensure that every girl who needs a dress for prom has one.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Legislator Dixon again this year. The drive has become a mainstay in the community with our stores consistently receiving inquires and phone calls asking for all the details. It's a great event to be a part of,” said Eric Pyne, President of Urban Valet Cleaners.

“I am excited to announce the return of the Prom Dress Drive. Now in our 8th year we are looking forward to once again providing amazing dresses, free of charge to anyone who wants one. The gown giveaway was initially started to help families alleviate some of the cost of prom, and while that is still a main goal, this event has also transformed into a great reuse program. It makes sense for anyone who doesn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a gown they will only wear once,” said Legislator Dixon.

Urban Valet cleans every dress, free of charge, and organizes them for the gown giveaway event.

Erie County Fair Beer Competition Deadline Scheduled for April 7th

The first step in the process to determine which homebrew will be named the 2017 Erie County Fair Craft Beer has been scheduled. Beginning Monday, April 3rd, homebrewers from across New York State may submit their brews in the Fair’s Homebrew Competition. The annual summer release of the limited run, craft beer based on the winning brew has become an anticipated tradition at the Erie County Fair for beer lovers.

Homebrew hobbyists have until Friday, April 7th to submit their beers for judging.

In addition to the opportunity to win a gold medal for excellence, the Erie County Fair Homebrew Competition’s top entry will be professionally brewed and be named the 2017 “Erie County Fair Craft Beer.”

A $20 entry fee allows homebrewers to submit up to five entries in categorical styles ranging from lagers and pilsners to a variety of ale. Any New York State resident is eligible to enter the Homebrew competition. Judging is scheduled to take place Saturday, April 22nd inside the Fair’s Ag-Grange Building. Top brews will be selected through a blind tasting panel made up of at least two certified master judges.

Once a “Best of Show” winner is determined, the brewer will be asked to submit the brew’s recipe which will then be turned over to the professional brew master of Flying Bison. Flying Bison will analyze the winning recipe to ensure that it is commercially and legally producible. In addition, an attempt will be made to brew the winning beer with all New York State sourced products. Once kegged, Try-It Distributing will distribute the finished product for public purchase at select Western New York outlets prior to the Fair. During the Erie County Fair, several on-premises locations will feature the award winning beer.

Homebrewers interested in entering the competition can find complete rules and guidelines on the Erie County Fair http://bit.ly/ECFBeer. Entries can be dropped off on Monday, April 3rd through Friday, April 7th between 9am and 5pm (with a copy of the entry form) to the Main Office of the Fairgrounds OR to Flying Bison Brewing Company on April 6th or 7th between the hours of 12pm and 8pm. Those dropping off brew entries entries at Flying Bison will be able to take home a filled growler of Flying Bison brew for $5.

The judging of homebrewed beer is just one of the competitions held annually by the Erie County Fair. In 2017, over 12,000 entries are expected to be received and judged by the Fair’s Competitive Exhibits Office. The wide range of ribbon winning categories include agriculture, conservation and creative arts, among others. Entry information for all other categories will be available online starting May 1st. ________

First the wind came, blowing down trees and cutting off the power, causing a day off from school while utility contractors and road crews worked to return things to normal. Then the snows came, closing school again for two consecutive days. Cancelled right along with it were the scheduled practice sessions for the high school's musical, Footloose, causing many to worry that it may not be ready to hit the stage. Those fears quickly evaporated with the first note sung as the actors took the stage in the high school auditorium for their debut performance on Thursday, March 16, 2017. The cast appeared confident and well rehearsed, and the pit band and crew all played their parts to perfection to create a highly entertaining show. Subsequent shows on Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18 only improved with each performance. Harley Mehnert, Elizabeth O'Neil and Emma Dosser joined the stars of the show, Melody Catalano as Ariel Moore, and John Fera as Ren McCormick as they sang and danced with gusto, giving everything to their final musical performance as seniors before they head toward bigger stages in the future.

Likewise, Jay Gleason gave a memorable and hilarious performance as Willard Hewitt, and Joel Yoder commanded the stage as Reverend Shaw Moore. It was a spectacular show!! __________

In response to the President’s Executive Budget proposal, the Erie County Legislature has taken action in support of funding for several key agencies that benefit the community.

“The proposed cuts to these important programs need to be reviewed. Slashing funding for many of the programs mentioned would be a mistake. I want to thank our local delegation who has come out in support of funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, Meals on Wheels, HEAP and others. In any budget process there has to be diligent reviews of programs and how services are delivered, however I know these programs are very important to Western New York, and myself and many of my colleagues support restoring funding,” said Chairman John Mills.
