5th grade art students at Eden Elementary learned about art, design and business while building their own food trucks out of recycled materials! Art teacher Amy Witman, had students create logos and menus on a graphic design program, as well as a color scheme which related to their concept, then create food miniatures out of clay. This STEAM activity wrapped up with a school-wide vote on the best food truck designs. All students did an amazing job, and were extremely engaged throughout this unit! The first place winner was “Chef” Reylan Mathis, with his “Bill’s Grill” design, from Mrs. Lincoln’s 5th grade class. Also pictured are Blake Meyer and Paige Ford display their food truck called "The Bread Box" and Nat Crouthamel and David Gullo with their food truck called : Two Scoops."

Mrs. Tilly's 1st-grade class at Southtowns Catholic School learned about different kinds of weather in their Social Studies class. They discussed snow A LOT seeing as how we live in Buffalo and are no strangers to snowstorms! Students worked in small groups to create their very own "blizzards in a jar" using baby oil, water, paint, glitter, and Alka-Seltzer tabs. When they dropped the seltzer tabs in the solution, the materials moved around like crazy causing it to look like a snowstorm. Pictured are two students watching the reaction take effect!

“The Eskimos had fifty-two names for snow because it was important to them: there ought to be as many for love.”
~Margaret Atwood
There are so many kinds of love…puppy love; the “head-overheels, can’t bear to be apart” infatuation of the twenties; the commitment of the newlyweds; the comfort the long-married find in each other’s company; the glow of first-time parents, the love we have for family and for friends…
As Valentine’s Day approaches stop and think of all those you love -- and all the different ways and reasons you love them. Once you get past the hype that advertisers use to promote the day, you’ll realize that just in your own experience there ought to be at least fifty-two names for love.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
