Attention Eden Residents:

New garbage totes on wheels will be delivered to each resident this week.

Some important details you should know…

• Each resident will receive two 96-gallon totes delivered during the week of December 18th for the collection of trash and recyclables.

• The totes will be left at the end of your drive-way.

• Some residents’ garbage pick-up days will be changing. Please check the paperwork provided with the tote to determine your garbage pickup day.

• Begin using the totes and following your new garbage schedule the week of January 1st.

• Place the totes 4’ apart from each other and any other obstacles (mailboxes, cars, etc.). Handles of the carts should face the house.

• Recyclables will be collected bi-weekly to begin the first week in January.

• Bulk items will be picked up the first full week of each month beginning the first week of January.

• All garbage and recyclables must be contained in the tote. Nothing outside of the tote with the exception of your bulk item will be picked up • Recyclables should be placed individually in the tote. Do not bag recyclables.

• Please read the paperwork provided with the tote and contact the Town Hall with any questions you may have.

Eden Elementary Teacher Helps out after Hurricane Harvey

Karl Walker joined Team Rubicon, a disaster response group about 18 months ago. Team Rubicon is made up of approximately 70% Veterans and 30% civilians. When disaster strikes, Team Rubicon assesses the situation, working alongside FEMA, to see if they can help. They do not go into a region to pass out water, they go to get dirty, to help muck out houses and tear down walls and ceilings, a step towards making houses livable again.

When Hurricane Harvey struck Texas at the end of August, it was pure devastation. The water did not just flood the area and go back out to sea. The water stayed for over a week ruining personal belongings, walls and ceilings. Along with a storm surge of at least 4 feet of water, they also received 51 inches of rain, which could equal over 40 feet of snow.

A message went to over 50,000 members of Team Rubicon that help was needed and American Airlines was donating 11 flights to and from Houston. He was able to catch a seat on one of the charter flights and went to Houston.

He arrived in Houston and stepped up to help immediately. They were tasked with working in Beaumont, Texas, about 1 ½ from Houston, closer to the coast. The unbelievable sights of destruction started right away. Entire neighborhoods had been submerged over an hour from the coast. Some of the drainage ditches were more that 20 feet across and over 6 feet deep, yet the water rose high enough to flood the nearby houses.

Upon arrival in Beaumont the volunteers were asked if anyone had experience in construction. Karl said yes and was made a Strike Team Leader. Each strike team was made up of 6 people and a pick-up truck loaded with tools and wheelbarrows for the long days ahead.

Each day started with a leader brief at 7:30 AM, group meeting at 8, and working at a house by 9. The temperature was in the 90s, with a feel in the 100s. The teams returned about 5, and would spend another hour decontaminating their tools, truck and boots.

They were lucky to have a shower trailer on site, then dinner and a meeting at 8 PM, to debrief from the workday.

The work was difficult and exhausting, but the purpose overpowered all of it. Karl worked with and for people from all walks of life. His first house he worked at was for a 70year-old woman who still did barrel racing on horses. There were houses belonging to policemen, first responders, and many who would never have the means to be able to do this labor. The final house was a disabled Veteran, and the only thing he asked is that we find his Army uniform.

Karl said he didn’t expect this level of devastation he found in Texas. You can’t see the reality by watching TV. The houses were marked by FEMA on the rooves because in the initial assessments there was still so much water, it was done by boat. That was tough to imagine. Entire homes were submerged in water. We carried all of their belongings to the curb and stripped their house down to the studs. There were streets where as far as you could see, were lined on both sides with all of their belongings, and also the walls, cabinets, and even the kitchen sinks. He knows that’s the first step in helping them rebuild, but it was still tough.

Team Rubicon also does more local things such as the recent tornado that went through Erie, PA, and various rebuild projects that help Veterans across the country.

Hurricane Harvey saw over 2,000 volunteers from Team Rubicon step up to help out.

All of that is possible through donations and sponsors, they are listed as one of the best non-profits in the USA.

On Thursday, November 16th, the Eden Chamber of Commerce recognized their Citizen and Business of the Year with a delicious dinner served by the staff of the Four Corners Café. The event was very well attended by Chamber members and friends.

The Citizen of the Year for 2017 is Mr. Paul Zittel of Amos Zittel and Sons. He was recognized by President Pattie Hartman for his many accomplishments he achieved while a board member and President of the Chamber. Mr. Bill Agle, Paul’s colleague and close friend spoke of Paul’s other accomplishments within our town and county and the years growing up together. It is clear that Mr. Zittel is not only a guy who can get things done, but also a good friend to have if you are lucky enough to be associated with him.

The Business of the Year for 2017 is Laing Gro Fertilizers, Inc. Laing Gro has served the farming industry for decades now. They have suffered losses and rebuilt their compound to an even more productive business. Mr. Paul Laing was the recipient of the award for Laing Gro that was presented to him by President Pattie Hartman and Jerry Mammoser of Mammoser Farms. Mr. Mammoser spoke of how Laing Gro and its staff have served the agriculture community far beyond the call of duty. What a unique business Eden is so blessed to have in the heart of its town.

in the Village of Angola, which has become known as the “Angola Horror.” The last two passenger cars on the Buffalo and Erie Railroad’s eastbound New York Express derailed as they approached the bridge at Big Sister Creek and fell into the gorge. One car burst into flames immediately. The other car was smashed. About 50 people died McAllister Bryant-Lennox 2x6 that day.

This was one of the worst train wrecks in American history.

(center) On Friday December 8, 2017, members of the EGSC hosted their annual winter garden therapy project at Eden Heights assisted care facility. With instruction and assistance from EGSC members, residents created centerpieces made from fresh evergreens and fresh flowers, enhanced with Christmas balls, bows and jingle bells.

Some residents used their creations as decorations in their rooms, while others designed the centerpieces as gifts for friends or relatives. ________

College or Technical School a plus with an understanding of basic electricity is a plus. Previous on-the job experience in a test lab or related field and exposure to AS9100/ISO9001 Quality Systems is a plus. Computer skills such as MS Excel, MS Access & MS Word is needed.

Reprinted in full from an article which appeared in

“Harpers Weekly” January 11, 1868…

...which stated that “in a previous Number a brief account of the terrible accident on the Lake Shore Railroad, near Angola, New York, by which fifty persons were crushed and burned to death, we give on the next page three illustrations* of the same horrible accident.

It appears from the account of our special artist, who was dispatched to the scene soon after the accident was known, that the rear car of the train was the first to leave the track. It bounded along the rails for some distance until it came to the bridge, when the vibration of that structure caused it to careen to one side, and the coupling which attached it to the preceding car breaking, it was thrown down the bridge, falling a distance of forth or fifty feet.

The next car preceding it crossed the bridge in safety, but only to leap from the track soon after reaching the solid ground. The rear car fell to the left; the other to the right or south side of the bridge. Our first illustration shows the rear car leaving the track; the others show the position of both after the disaster occurred. It is impossible to express in words the horrible consequences of the disaster to the inmates of the rear car, the other car it should be remembered, was not much injured, and did not take fire; and though nearly all the passengers were more or less disabled, their injuries were slight compared with those of the passengers in the burned car. There were sixty passengers in this car; only two of them were take out alive; the rest were burned almost past recognition.

It is impossible to convey an idea of the scene in words. Our artist collected a number of the incidents which occurred as related by eye-witnesses, and has forwarded them to us. One of the young women who had been in the car least damaged, but who had been badly injured, insisted while her wounds were being dressed on nursing a babe rescued from the burning car, and had taken from the breast of his mother who had been killed by the fall. A little boy was heard entreating each passenger to tell him if his mother would get well. “Will my mother get well?” was his agonizing cry. His mother was alive but no one could have recognized a semblance to the human countenance in her bruised and mangled features. But the boy knew his mother, and knelt by her side, kissing her black and bleeding lips, entreating her most piteously to “get well quick.” A man stupefied from the shock, continually asked for his wife – “Where is she? Shall I ever see her again?” Fortunately she escaped with slight injuries, but in the hurry and excitement of removing bodies the two had been carried to different houses. Her first inquiry was after her husband and one of the uninjured passengers, discovering the relationship , carried her news of his safety, and took back, “her love” to her husband. Both recovered from their wounds.

Our third illustration on this page shows the wreck of the second car, with the burning one in the distance under the bridge. The three in their natural order and connection fully explain and illustrate the disaster. We are indebted for one of our sketches to Mr. Erasmus W. Smith, the well-known engineer.”
