Eden Girls Volleyball Captures Another State Championship

The Eden Lady Raiders dominated in the Glens Falls Civic Center as they claimed the NYSPHSAA Class C State Title. The Raiders outplayed their opponents in pool play, and in the final match. In the finals, Eden swept Pawling in three straight sets. (25-10, 25-11, 25-10). Eden was led by senior, Sam Burgio, the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year. During pool play on the first day, she slammed down 27 kills and accounted for 16 digs. Her numbers climbed as the team’s setter, Alyssa Durski continued to push the ball to the outside.

Junior Sam Logan and Paiton Basinski, sophomore, contributed to the powerful presence at the net. Durski’s strong serving runs throughout the tournament helped clench the title. Sam Burgio received the State Tournament MVP honor, while Alyssa Durski and Molly Breier made the State All Tournament Team. Sam and Molly set a record for winning six straight titles as players. Burgio remarked, “Throughout the year, our team as a whole had its ups and downs, but during States we all really clicked on the court and focused on our side of the net, which led us to a victory.”

As their high school season comes to an end, so does the historic coaching seasons of Stephen Pierce. Earlier this month, Pierce announced he will be retiring from coaching high school volleyball after 28 years. His dedication to the sport is evident by looking at his accomplishments; 995 wins, 23 division titles, 19 section titles and 13 NYSPHSAA State titles. His legendary career at Eden and the program he built will always be remembered.

There are many old wives tales about giving pets over the counter medications to treat ailments to avoid a trip to the Vet. While this may seem harmless, many of these over the counter medications can actually cause some serious problems. It is always best to contact your Veterinarian, before giving them something from your medicine cabinet. They can direct you on how to treat your pet, and what type of medication they should be on, as well as give you advice on if they should be seen for their ailment or not. Always keep your prescription medications out of reach of your pets. If cats and dogs are in the household, it is best to keep them in a location where they can’t be knocked onto the floor. Should you suspect that your pet has ingested your medication, immediately call a Veterinarian, so that they can advise you on how to proceed; don’t wait it out.

Guests, especially children, sometimes don’t know your pet like you do, and may make your pet uncomfortable. Sometimes, it may be best to remove your pet from the crowd, and place them in a quiet area in the house, away from others, or in a kennel, where they can relax. Never leave children unsupervised with your pet. Always watch for signs of discomfort or nervousness in your pet. If your pet is trying to remove itself from a situation, it is always best to take that as a sign that they are uncomfortable and need a break. Constant licking of the lips, “whale eyes,” or turning the head away, or shifting of the eyes are all signs that your dog IN STOCK is nervous, and does not like what is going on. These are early warnings that could avoid a potential bite situation. Even the best dogs can become uncomfortable, and deserve to have time to relax if needed. Keep an eye on doors and windows if you have indoor only cats, so that they don’t escape with all of the traffic in your household should they become nervous. They may need to be confined as well, in a bedroom or other area, to avoid potential problems. Have a plan in place before your guests arrive, and your pets will thank you for it! Happy Holidays! Students “Sleep Out” for a Great Cause

On Thursday, November 10, several North Collins students participated in our Homeless Sleep Out to raise awareness of this serious issue. Students raised a minimum of $30 to participate, sponsored by family, friends and community members. All of the money raised - over $1,300 in total - was donated to the Eden/North Collins Food Pantry to help make the holidays a little brighter for families in the local area. Participating in the sleep out were Samantha Bucco, Ashley Eagen, Anna Fera, Jay Gleason, Mackenzie Green, David Gullo, Mike Gullo, Ashlee Hohman, Wayne Lawrence, Jack Mathis, Destiny Neamon, Nicholas Nosbisch, Michael Petrus, Tyler Schiffman, Morgan Smith, Nickole Schneider, Nick Woronwski, Joel Yoder and Owen Yoder.

Each student supplied their own decorated box in which to sleep in, and many of the submissions showed incredible creativity.

Among the entries were a Krispy Kreme donut box, a UPS truck, an ice cream truck, a gingerbread house and the grand prize winner, the USS Food Bank, a model of a ship with a real working lighthouse constructed by senior Wayne Lawrence. His win represents the third year in a row he has participated and won first place. Students were not allowed to use electronic devices during the sleep out so they had a real understanding of what it is like to live without these modern-day conveniences we all take for granted.

Instead, they played board games, tossed around a football or Frisbee, or sang songs around a small campfire. While this event normally occurs every other years, these passionate students begged for the opportunity to raise money and awareness, and in the process showed their true Eagle Pride! On Thursday, November 10th, Newell - Faulkner American Legion Post 880 Honor Guard came to Southtowns Catholic School to celebrate Veterans Day. With all the students, faculty & families in the gym, the Post talked about what Veterans Day is and answered questions. The school sang the Star Spangled Banner as Richard Casseri played the saxophone. He also played a medley of military songs and asked everyone to stand if they had someone who is in or served in each branch. During the day, Veterans joined their family member for lunch at school. “We care about the communities we serve, and want people to be knowledgeable, prepared, and safe whenever appliances are used that can create carbon monoxide,” said Mark S. Lynch, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E. Carbon monoxide gas is produced by a variety of sources, including natural gas and oil furnaces, gas stoves, water heaters and automobile exhaust.

It is odorless and invisible, but toxic. It is can accumulate in enclosed areas when appliances and consumer products are improperly operating or not vented properly.

The companies recommend making sure heating systems are clean and functioning, and that carbon monoxide alarms are installed in homes. Place carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home, outside of sleeping areas, and inside each bedroom.

Faulty furnaces and water heaters are common causes of carbon monoxide incidents. The warning signs of poisoning include flu-like symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness and confusion. At higher concentrations, the gas can cause brain damage or death.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, carbon monoxide poisoning is the leading cause of accidental poisoning, responsible for about 400 deaths a year and sending an additional 20,000 people to the emergency room.

How to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning Install CO detectors: Detectors or alarms are the only way to detect carbon monoxide. The National Fire Protection Association recommends installing a carbon monoxide alarm on each level of a house and in a central location outside each sleeping area. Do a monthly alarm test and change batteries every six months. If any carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave your home immediately and call 911.

Inspect heating systems: Nearly 41 percent of carbon monoxide exposure occurs during the winter months. Have heating systems inspected and serviced by a qualified technician before heating season and have vent pipes and chimneys inspected as well.

Stove safety: The gas stove can be a source of carbon monoxide poisoning. Run an exhaust fan when cooking. Periodically, open a window to allow fresh air to circulate. A gas oven or stove should never be used for space heating.

Indoor awareness: Never use generators, charcoal grills, camp stoves, or any natural gasburning appliance indoors, in a garage, or in any confined area.

Garage: Never leave a car running in an attached garage — even if the garage door is open, because carbon monoxide emissions can still leak into your home. __________
