NOTICE OF ANNUAL SCHOOL BUDGET MEETING BUDGET REFERENDUM AND ELECTION

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual School Budget Meeting (Public Hearing) for qualified district residents will be held in the Lake Shore High School Library Media Center, 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.

FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual School Budget Referendum and Election for (1) approval of the Annual School District Budget for the 2023-24 School Year; (2) voting on a proposition regarding the purchase of replacement vehicles; (3) voting on a proposition regarding a Capital Improvement Project; (4) the Election of two qualified district residents to the office of Member of the Board of Education; and (5) for the transaction of such other business as is authorized by law, will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., in the Lobby located outside the District Office/Gymnasium of the Lake Shore High School located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York 14006.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that a copy of the statement of the amount of money which will be required for the 2023-24 fiscal year for school purposes, exclusive of public monies, may be obtained by any District resident beginning May 2, 2023 through and including May 16, 2023, excluding weekends and holidays, at the District Office, 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York or in each school building between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that all candidates for the office of Member of the Board of Education shall be nominated by petition. Each nominating petition shall be directed to the District Clerk, shall be signed by at least twenty-five (25) qualified voters of the District, and shall state the residence of each signer, and shall state the name and residence of the candidate. Petitions shall be filed in the District Clerk’s Office located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday except Holidays. Each petition must be filed in the District Clerk’s Office by no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 17, 2023. The two candidates who receive the highest number of votes at the Annual Meeting will fill the expired terms of the two incumbents. The candidate who receives the highest number of votes will be elected to serve a term which will commence immediately after the election (upon filing the oath of office) and continue until June 30, 2026. The candidate who receives the second highest number of votes will be elected to a three-year term commencing on July 1, 2023 and continuing until June 30, 2026.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that voting will consist of voting on the budget and on the following propositions, as well as other such matters as may be lawfully presented at the meeting:

PROPOSITION NO. 1

Shall the following resolution be adopted:

RESOLVED, that the budget for the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District for the fiscal year commencing July 1, 2023, and ending June 30, 2024, as presented by the Board of Education is hereby approved and adopted and the required funds therefore are hereby appropriated and the necessary real property taxes required shall be raised by a tax on the taxable property in the District to be levied and collected as required by law.

PROPOSITION NO.

Shall the following resolution be adopted:

PROPOSITION NO. 3

RESOLVED, that the Board of Education (the “Board”) of the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District, Erie County, New York (the “District”) is hereby authorized to undertake a capital improvement project consisting of (i) the construction of alterations, renovations and improvements to the District’s school building and associated facilities, including improvements to recreation and athletic facilities, (ii) site work improvement for various school purposes and (iii) other appurtenant and related improvements, and the acquisition and installation in and around the foregoing improvements of original furnishings, equipment, machinery, apparatus and technology improvements, and other services incidental thereto; all at a total estimated maximum cost not to exceed $59,500,000, with such cost being raised by the expenditure of $10,000,000 from the District’s existing “Capital Reserve Fund, 2021” (said fund being established pursuant to a proposition approved by the qualified voters of the District on May 18, 2021), and with the balance thereof, not to exceed $49,500,000, being raised by a tax upon the taxable property within said District to be levied and collected in annual installments in such years and in such amounts as may be determined by the Board as provided in Section 416 of the Education Law, with such tax to be partially offset by State aid available therefor, and in anticipation of the collection of such tax, by the issuance of debt obligations of the District as may be necessary.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that applications for absentee ballots may be obtained Monday through Friday, except holidays, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the District Clerk’s Office located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York. Completed applications must be received by the District Clerk or her designee at least seven (7) days before the annual meeting and election (May 9, 2023) if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter or by the day before the election (May 15, 2023) if the ballot is to be issued to the voter in person. Completed absentee ballots must be received by the office of the District Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on May 16, 2023.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that military voters who are qualified voters of the school district may apply for a military ballot. Applications for military ballots may be obtained from the District Clerk’s Office and the military voter may designate a preference to receive the application and/or the military ballot by mail, fax or email. Completed applications for military ballots must be received by the District Clerk or her designee by no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 21, 2023.

Hard to believe that there was a Chevrolet, Ford and Plymouth dealer all at the same time in Eden. William Howell set up the Chevy business in 1920, on West Church St, three places down from what is now the barber shop. Purchased a 1937 Chevy Coupe from him for $300.00, when I was 16.William Roeller in 1917, set up the Ford Agency where the Eden Tractor is today, Later Ernie Rice, purchased it. Bill Rice my friend and I used to hang around the garage, one day Shorty Fries a mechanic smeared grease on our face, in other words he meant don't hang around the garage. Nobbs and Williams purchased the building later. Harvey Hooker had a Plymouth garage where 2 Guys are today. Bill Gearhart was the mechanic.

While reviewing some of the historical society’s collections of past donated items, we happened across this photo of snowmobilers under the “Mill Street Bridge in Angola, N.Y.” (as captioned on the back). The photo was donated to us by Sally Giambrone, and we are guessing that the photo was taken in the 1970’s - most likely during 1977 - as other photos donated by Sally were taken at that time. On a sad note: this same bridge over Big Sister’s Creek, as well as the frozen creek bed below, was also the site of the 1867 railroad disaster referred to as “The Angola Horror”. The tragedy took place on December 18, 1867. To be continued. Submitted by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society.

Joyce A. White (Senior), age 86, of Eden, New York died March 24, 2023. She was born August 27, 1936 in Ridgeway Pennsylvania. A daughter of the late Jay and Mazie Senior (Hunt). Devoted mother of Kimberley (Andrew) Wagner. Loving grandmother to Dillon, Connor, and Shane Wagner. Joyce enjoyed gardening and her beloved cats. She loved being creative. She was talented at many things, especially quilting, sewing, and needlework. Joyce made many beautiful items for others that will always be cherished. May she rest in peace. Ellen L. Schuster of Collins, NY entered into rest March 21, 2023 at the age of 93. Beloved wife of the late Henry “Hank” Schuster; mother of John (Judy) Schuster, Jenny (Joe) Gernatt, Tom (Sandy) Schuster and the late Howard Schuster. She is survived by twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by two sisters. Ellen was an Erie County 4-H leader for 54 years, and a seamstress extraordinaire. She taught many people to sew, made many quilts, wedding dresses and prom dresses. She loved flowers, birds, playing cards and games. She was a member of Erie 4-H Alumni and the Collins Center Fire Company Auxiliary. No prior visitation. Burial will be held privately. Loving mother of Francis (Kelli) Sparks, Aaron (Chelsea) Kroll, Alexis (Tim) Good and the late Aryc Sparks. Grandmother of 8 grandchildren. Daughter of Ann Marie Barrett and the late Theodore Sparks. Donald M. McNulty, Sr.of Hamburg, NY, passed away March 26, 2023. Dearest father of Donald (Becky) NcNulty Jr., Paul (Kimmie) McNulty, and Scott (Jaclyn) McNulty; loving grandfather of Tristan McNulty, Devon and Allie Ewertz, Dylan McNulty, Jackson McNulty, Ryan McNulty, Brittney McNulty, and Brandon McNulty. Cherished son of the late Donald J. McNulty and Ruth "Tootie" McNulty (nee Green); brother of Dennis (Annie) McNulty and Sharon (Chris) Wilson; also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. A THOUGHT TO REMEMBER…

It is not always easy to understand another person — their thoughts, actions, beliefs, fears. In fact, the actions, emotions and thoughts of others can often leave us confused and baffled.

Even if we can’t immediately understand, it’s a good idea to try not to judge too quickly. We need to remember that no two human beings are alike in their thoughts and emotions; no two human beings are molded by the same experiences.

We need to try to understand and learn as much as possible about others’ feelings and points of view. It’s not an easy thing to do. In fact, sometimes differing thoughts will never be understood. But attempting to understand can prevent differences in viewpoint from becoming distorted. At the very least, it can be a start toward better understanding.
