Several magazines have named it the top liberal arts college in the country. New College is defined by its dedication to academic freedom and open access to higher education. Students are encouraged to research a variety of themes and concepts, to offer hard questions, and to seek out important, conservative institutions. New College's staff and students contended that a merger would undermine the college's distinct character and autonomy, as well as its accreditation and finances. Desantis was chastised for making such a radical proposal without engaging them or other stakeholders. Several lawmakers and advocacy groups have recently called for a probe into Desantis' behavior and a future lawsuit against him. They claim that his veto violates the constitutional rights of New College's staff and students and the ideals of academic freedom and shared governance. Furthermore, they claim that his suspension was politically motivated and lacked sufficient rationale or evidence.Meanwhile, Desantis supporters believe that he has the ability and obligation to use state monies as he sees fit and that he is seeking to enhance Florida's higher education system by prioritizing practical skills and job preparation.

Furthermore, they point out that New College has received substantial support from private and other sources, implying that its future is not necessarily jeopardized.The New College controversy highlights basic conflicts and debates about the function and value of liberal arts education, especially in a state like Florida that significantly focuses on vocational and technical education.It also raises concerns about the relationship between political leaders and higher education institutions and the limits and safeguards of academic freedom in a polarized and partisan environment. New College is defined by its dedication to academic freedom and open access to higher education. Students are encouraged to examine pursue their interests and passions. Students can create their courses, collaborate closely with faculty instructors, and take advantage of experiential learning opportunities such as internships, community service, and study abroad.
