New College Leads the Charge for Equity, Inclusion, Diversity, and Free Learning

The actions of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will probably have an impact on the future of liberal arts degrees, which is a crucial topic to consider. In 2018, DeSantis introduced the “Excellence in Higher Education Act,” designed to focus more on STEM fields and reduce funding for liberal arts colleges. This has had a direct impact on New College of Florida, a public liberal arts college located in Sarasota, FL.

Despite this action from the governor, there are still plenty of reasons why students should pursue a liberal arts degree instead of a STEM-focused one. Liberal Arts colleges offer students diverse courses that allow them to explore their interests and gain valuable skills such as critical thinking, communication, and famous graduates and their accomplishments.

Some of the most successful Liberal Arts graduates include Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, former US President Barack Obama, renowned novelist J.K Rowling, Nobel Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai and Pulitzer Prize winner William Faulkner. Through their accomplishments, these graduates have shown that there are numerous pathways to success and recognition, regardless of one’s major.
