FAMILY DISTRAUGHT OVER BULLDOZED GRAVES

n Family mourns for ancestral graves BY LUXOLO TWANI The distain with which their ancestral shrine was treated still haunts the Hanjana family to this day. They claim that their ancestral graves and homes in Bowden Village were demolished without warning when the R392 access road in the former Transkei was built in 1976. Bowden is a deep rural location between Queenstown and Dordrecht in the Chris Hani district. The Hanjana family which is scattered across the Eastern Cape, occasionally

gathers at their ancestral home to weep over their desecrated ancestral connection. “They simply told us they will be making a road here and ordered us to move. Before we could do anything, we saw their big machines trampling over the graves which were there. We rushed to the scene to collect some of the bones which were exposed, some even with hair, but we could not collect all as their foreman warned us that their machines would kill us if we were in the way. We only watched in horror as our anestral’ graves were violated.”

This is how Mr Sandile Hanjana narrated the sordid experience they had to go through. He went on “we cannot even go to the ancestral graves, because their bones are right under this road”, he said pointing at the R392 road. While conscious of the reparations available for those forcefully moved between 1913 and 1994, Mr Hanjana claims money cannot reimburse the spiritual loss and the misfortune of not having ancestral graves. “Even our children display abnormal

behaviour and we just cannot escape the wrath of the ancestors whose bones continue to be battered by all these cars on that road. We need the bones so that we may rebury them with the dignity they deserve," he said. The family has reportedly not lodged a claim as yet, but they believe the democratic government will restore their family dignity which the apartheid regime robbed them of. email: ltwani@gmail.com

BY ERIC GYIMAH

More than 200 South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) members employed by the Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) marched down Oxford Street to the City Hall on Friday afternoon. The aim of the protest was to hand over a memorandum of demands to the municipality, which was accepted by Director General of Local Government, Mr Mninawe Nyusile and Buffalo City Municipality Chief Whip, Mr Sangweni

Matwele. Protesters chanted for Executive Mayor, Ms Zukiswa Ncitha to step down. The alleged collaboration between the politicians and tenderpreneurs in squandering ratepayers’ money was one of the key issues of the march. Other unions, including the South African Civic Organisation (SANCO) and the South African Communist Party (SACP), joined the protest, in support of an anti-corrupt society. “We don’t want to inherit corruption.

We fully support SAMWU in this protest. People must step down while the process of the investigation continues,” stated SACP comrade, Mr Wanda Ndwebisa. ‘’If corruption is happening within the municipality, then this affects the service delivery of the people,” said Provincial President of SANCO, Mr Don Bolman. The demands in the memorandum included that BCMM immediately removes the electronic attendance system, a demand for a 14th-cheque and speedy

implementation of the BCMM structure for filling vacant funded posts. “All the people who are directly linked in allegedly looting the “Mandela funds” should step down,” stated SAMWU Chairperson, Mr Mava Ndzanzeka. “The context of the memorandum has been received, and my duty is to take it to the office of the MEC where these serious matters can further be discussed,” said Mr Matwele. email: reporter1@ectoday.co.za

SA MEN NOT HAVING SEX BY VUYO LUDIDI

Erectile Dysfunction(ED), gross media consumption and economic uncertainties are just some of the problems South African men are citing for their lack of sexual intimacy, says Mariska van Aswegen, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics. A recent study conducted by Pharma Dynamics (a South African generics pharmaceutical company specialising in men’s health) revealed that South African men are having far less sex compared to the rest of the world. Over 500 men involved in committed relationships, between the ages of 18 and 55 participated in the survey. The study revealed that the average number of times a year South African men enjoy sex is 52, while the global average amounts to 104 times annually. Most men surveyed also blamed stress and erectile dysfunction for

their dwindling sex lives. EC Today went out into the streets of East London to hear people’s views about the outcomes of this study. Mr Lukhanyo Ntshiba, 29, a civil servant from Greenfields, partly agreed with the outcomes of the study. “People do spend a lot of time on social networks these days or consuming any other form of media, but I’m not sure that economic uncertainties result in less desire for sex. It is well documented that people at bottom end of the economic scale breed more than those at the top, and they face a lot of uncertainties, but then again the reasons could be different and unique to each individual,” he said. Ms Bulelwa Mcoteli, 20, a second-year accounting scholar at Fort Hare University, said she believed there could be many variables as to what causes men to be less interested in sex. “A conservative religious outlook or negative beliefs about

Fears and anxiety typically manifest themselves in a sexual situation where the subconscious mind will protect a man from experiencing negative emotions by inhibiting his desire,” Ms van Aswegen said. She went on to say, “this then keeps him from engaging in sexual activity and could possibly even set them up for failure.” In order for SA men to engage in a more active sex life, Pharma Dynamics suggested that men must do some soul searching and

LET’S WELCOME WOMEN’S MONTH Wathint’Abafazi, Wathint’Imbokodo (You strike a woman, you strike a rock), today is the start of Women’s Month. South Africa commemorates this August as a tribute to thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings in 1956 to protest against the extension of Pass Laws and also to the pioneers of the women’s movement in this country. Women’s Month is also serves to recall and recognise the work of those who fought for the rights of women. Our government has made significant progress in empowering women in the political, public and educational spheres. Women’s empowerment has played a big role in achieving gender equality as currently women have influential positions in government... The influence of women in our society is huge, and it’s shown by the increase of women holding high positions in the so called male dominant industries, like engineering, construction and most other career paths. We live in a society where the rate of women abuse and unemployment is high and in this 20th anniversary of freedom women should stand up for what they believe is right. They must be treated with respect and must not be demeaned and violated in any way. This is the time to give back and celebrate women who have made a difference in our lives. Our grade R teachers have made an influence in our future and yet we don’t recognise them enough and so we say thank you for instilling the values of ubuntu. Women are the gift from God; there is no way we can ever really thank them for the sacrifices they’ve made in this country. Let’s make this women’s month a different one. Be there at all times to support them with everything they do. We'd love to hear from you, tell us your views about anything or like our facebook http://www.facebook.com/ectoday.co.za or email:news@ectoday.co.za

ANC APPLAUDS SERVICE AGREEMENT As the ANC in the EC, we welcome the progressive step taken by the EC Premier to commit all the MEC's to a signed service delivery agreement. This shows that we have taken steps forward in making sure that we do not leave any stone unturned. An MEC and any government deployee must do what she or he committed themselves to do in the period of their deployment. The ANC made promises to deliver services based on what people of the province wanted when we were campaigning for elections. Signing agreements gives us an opportunity to monitor how services are delivered. We need to see the changed attitude of government servants. The Premier in his address spoke about new improved accountability and

reporting methodology. We are more than happy to welcome these new ideas. We will be monitoring each and every MEC based on the deliverables in each agreement signed. With Premier Phumulo Masualle at the helm of this initiative, we continue to have confidence in his ability to lead government and with our support; we will work hard to take the province to another level. As the ANC we reiterate our commitment to improve lives in the Eastern Cape through a responsive government, this is our main agenda. We call upon Eastern Cape communities to be part of this commitment by making sure they get involved in their respective communities. ANC EC Provincial Secretary, Cde Oscar Mabuyane.

COPE STATEMENT ON MBASHE UNDERSPENDS The Congress of the People wishes to condemn the continuous failure by the municipality leadership to curb the yearly under spend. Mbhashe Municipality is the poorest in the country and under spending of some R40 million amounts to a crime against the starving and underserviced people of Mbhashe. The most hurtful part of this is that the municipal leadership sees this as normal and is not ashamed. We are further puzzled by “ghost” signed invoices and orders. We see adverts in newspapers, which have been purportedly signed off by municipal managers who are no longer in the municipality. The provincial government must now intervene and take over the executive functions of the municipality as they are clearly a failed project and are an embarrassment to the people who deployed them. Nkosinathi Ndlodaka COPE SPOKESPERSON IN MBHASHE

AG REPORT IS SHOCKING

The Auditor General report tabled today for Local Government is shocking and unacceptable. All the municipalities in the Eastern Cape failed dismally, no improvement. This AG report cannot be taken lightly. I'm calling on the ANC sober leadership in Calata House, our new Premier and ANC Chairperson and MEC Xasa to deal with this decisively. The Municipal Managers and Senior Directors in these municipalities have certain agendas which are anti-ANC policies and most of them are sent by op-

positions to sabotage ANC programmes as we march towards 2016 local government elections. My appeal to the ANC leadership and Premier is to first stop the Vuna awards for useless Eastern Cape Municipalities, and then decrease Municipal Manager’s term in office from 5 years to 3 years. Whilst doing this, I am calling on the Premier to appoint an urgent Commision of Enquiry which involves outside experts and NGO based people to investigate these taboos of failing

audits. Regarding the sex for jobs scandal; I am happy that Speaker N.Kiviet has appointed certain retired judges and a new team to deal with this. It’s shocking and unacceptable. These Managers/HODs/ Chief Directors are really undermining the ANC government and its revolutionary routine. There’s no time for mercy in this. Although I trust the ANC under Oscar Mabuyane and our Premier, we as true ANC members in all branch-

es must not fold arms, we must do something. Let’s expose these useless managers and have a clear programme of ensuring that puppets and sex kings are removed from any office. These municipalities are useless and are undermining the ANC as well as these managers in Bhisho. I personally will assist any team in naming and shaming wrong doers. Cowards have no space in the ANC. Viwe Sidali ANC BEC Member & Head of Political Education

PREMIER ENGAGES PUBLIC SERVICES

1 August 2014 - 8 August 2014

n Stakeholders urged to action BY VUYO LUDIDI Slow paced service execution by public servants, inadequate training skills and long queues are just some of the main challenges threatening public services, said Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle during his speech at the Public Service Commission Stakeholder Engagement meeting held at the East London International Convention Center last week. Premier Masualle urged stakeholders to strengthen their capacity to execute services for the public and emphasised the importance of quality administration. “Public service administrators must be innovative and change their mindset on how to approach public services issues. Proper planning and executing are necessary in order to achieve the desired results, that being a quality public service system,” said Premier Masualle. Speaker of the EC Legislature, Noxolo Kiviet was also present at the meeting. Her presentation focused on the role of

the executive legislature with regards to service delivery. She was vehement that stakeholders should go beyond just planning, they must ensure that plans materialise. “The executive legislature is responsible for researching, reporting, evaluating and monitoring public service. “Legislature must collaborate with the Public Service Commission; each should know specifically what their role is, public services should ensure that was has been planned will be realized,” Ms Kiviet said. Max Mhlathi, the UDM MPL and chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA), had stern words for the stakeholders. “The main problem facing the service industry is that public servants at the top are too relaxed because they are not being held accountable for their mismanagement, resulting in the numerous backlogs. “Public servants, especially those

in government structures, must be monitored and brought to book if they are not doing their job properly,” he said. Ben Mthembu, the chairperson of the Public Service Commission (PSC), made this point. “The public service has approximately one million employees. A fostering of interdependence between citizens, members of the executive council and the provincial legislature is key to making the public service commission functional. The implementation of the Batho Pele (humanitarian) principles can bring about the desired quality of services.” Stakeholders were given the opportunity to engage with provincial leaders and the top brass at the PSC. They raised their concerns and challenges on their respective fields and how they could go about reaching solutions. email: reporter2@ectoday.co.za

A REVOLUTION OF A SPECIAL KIND BY LUXOLO TWANI

ESKOM FIRE The fire brigade was called out to the Eskom Lamplough sub-station in Butterworth yesterday. The fire was caused by an Eskom employee who was burning rubbish in the bush nearby when a piece of cardboard blew onto stacked poles near the premises. Picture by Zizipho Vazi

Call it a swinging of the pendulum or turning of the tide but if the truth be told, it is a revolution of a special kind, at a community meeting held at a local crèche in Zweledinga Village, about 20km from Whittlesea near Queenstown. The average age of complainants was way above 50 years, and they were all united in their grievance against their local leadership. “We have been to higher offices in Queenstown and the municipality simply ignored our plea. Nothing has been done although we have serious complaints against our councillor and ward committee," said Mr Dumile Bhungane, 72, after opening the meeting with prayer. The complaints ranged from skewed employment procedures to discrimination in food parcel allocation. Young girls were given a platform where they narrated how their ward committee member demanded sex before considering them for employment. “Here we do not know how people get employed because there are no lists. If you are not favoured by the ward committee then, it is hard luck for you. You will never be employed,” explained Ms Zikhona Velele after claiming that she refused sexual advances from the ward committee. With many of the elderly wearing Democratic Alliance T-Shirts, 59 year old Ms Nomdaniso Bangani explained.

“I was an ANC Secretary and Sanco Deputy Secretary. Almost all of us in the villageare DA members now. Do you think we are proud of that? We do not hate the ANC but what can we do? If someone uses hunger and poverty as a weapon to beat you into submission, you have no alternative." Her views were supported by Mr Mnyangeni Gontsana, 78, who added. “Even Brigadier Oupa Gqozo in all his brutality listened when we went to him to complain. Here we have written letters, hired cars to go and visit leaders but up to this day we are ignored." When contacted for comment, Ward 12 Councillor Ms Noncedo Kondlo disputed the allegations that the villagers are ignored, but said there is a power tussle between her and the headman of the area, Mr Nkintshiwe Bungane. “We have an itinerary where we rotate to all the villages but when we came here in April, Mr Bungane gathered the villagers in his yard. I refused to convene a public meeting in his private yard and Mr Bungane has publicly proclaimed that his mission is to convert the village into DA. Legally, people have no right to call public meetings into private dwellings of individuals." Our attempts to contact the ward committee members who have been accused of illtreatment of senior citizens were unsuccessful as he ignored our calls. email: ltwani@gmail.com

President Zuma to celebrate 20 Years of Freedom with Faith-Based Organisations

His Excellency, President Jacob Zuma, will meet representatives of the faith-based sector in continuing with the 2014 theme of celebrating the country’s 20 Years of Freedom. Historically in South Africa the church and religious organisations have played a key role in the fight against racial discrimination and domination. Since 1994 the various religious communities in South Africa have been at the centre of taking up the fight against a number of social challenges, including building social cohesion, reducing poverty and inequality, moral regeneration, fighting substance abuse and violence against women and children. The celebration therefore seeks to thank the faith-based sector for the work they continue to do in building a better South Africa. Through the celebration, government also seeks to build a stronger, more dynamic and productive partnership between itself and faith-based organisations, united behind a common goal of moving the country forward in line with Vision 2030, as mapped out in the National Development Plan. BATTLING TO SURVIVE IN MNCOTSHO n Church assists in alleviating poverty

BY VUYO LUDIDI

Family dysfunctions and poverty are some of the challenges plaguing the village of Mncotsho, an area outside East London; as a result, the Methodist Church YMG Circuit 314 in East London provided school uniform to 5 children of Mbolompeni Junior Primary School who were most affected by poverty, and groceries for their families. The donation is reported to be worth approximately R5 000. Ms Vumazonke Ntshanga-Ntshanga, the guardian parent of one of the children who received school uniform, expressed much jubilation for the relief aid. Young children at Mncotsho are mostly raised by their grandparents who depend on their pension grants to keep food on the table. Young mothers have neglected their own children and squander the grant money meant to support their children, said Ms Ntshanga-Ntshanga, who also says that alcohol abuse has been a contributing factor to the high level of teenage pregnancy in the area. “I am filled with joy for this kind of gesture from the church because as grandparents here at Mncotsho we are struggling to feed our children. We have to raise them with the little money from our own pension grants” said Ms Ntshanga-Ntshanga. Ms Busisiwe Mrhalisa, the principal at Mbolompeni Primary School, was hopeful that the initiative would continue. She urged other organisations to support this community and the school. “Mncotsho Village is in great need of development and as part of the community we are grateful even for the minor efforts

being made to help. It is true that this village is very much impoverished. It is unfortunate that parents have to fork out R40 each out of their own pockets for extra teacher aid and security services,” said Ms Mrhalisa. Rev Zukile Makula, who is President of the Methodist Church Young Men’s Guild in East London said. “We are glad we have been given

the opportunity to contribute to the development of this community, this is part of our mission drive to help where we can regardless of whether you are a church member or not.” Mr Mfezeko Mahamba, the Coordinating Director of the Department of Development and Social Responsibility at the Methodist Church in East London Circuit 314 said. “The children were excited to receive full

school uniforms. We are targeting people who are struggling to make ends meet. The church was targeting those most affected by poverty. “We hope we will be able to find more people willing to help out in developing the community,” Mr Mahamba said. email: reporter2@ectoday.co.za

YOUNG SOLDIER LAID TO REST

A lifeless body was discovered at the Rhodes Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science (DIFS) dam on the 19th of August. The body was identified as Mr Abraham Johannes Smit, who worked for the 6th South African Infanity Battalion as a clerk. Mr Smit, 29, had served the army for eight years and was part of the

broader community of Grahamstown. The details around how he died are still not clear. “The cause of his death is believed to be a slip or fall,” said his mother, Ms Ria Mulder. “The police have opened an inquest docket following the death of Mr Smit, and the investigation findings will be released in court at a later stage,” said Police Spokesperson, Mr Luvuyo Mjekula.

The family requested Chaplin Mr Nkosinathi Ngesi, to host a cleansing ceremony also known as the uKukhapha ritual at the dam where Abraham’s body was found. This ceremony was done to release his spirit so that Abraham could rest in peace. “The context of this ceremony was more of a Christian belief than the African tradition of fetching the spirit to take it home,” stated Chaplin

Mr Ngesi. A memorial service was then held at the Battalion on Wednesday morning where fellow soldiers showed support to the grieving family. After the memorial service, Mr Smit’s father expressed his grief. He also thanked the Grahamstown community and the army for the support. email: reporter@ectoday.co.za

PREMIER COMMITS TO SMALL BUSINESS n Chris Hani forum kicks off BY LUXOLO TWANI

REDISA FACILITY A FIRST

As a precursor to a Business Summit to be held in Queenstown in September, Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle visited business people in Chris Hani under the banner of the Chris Hani District Business Forum (CHDBF) last Wednesday. Addressing budding business people across the eight municipal areas of Chris Hani District, the Premier emphasised the importance of efficiency and quality as pillars of success in small businesses. He pledged that 50 percent of all government procurement in the Eastern Cape will be from small businesses. “I am committing the Provincial Government to work in tandem with the newly established Department of Small Business Development through a combination of integrated programs to

improve the plight of small business and contribute to the creation of a vibrant and viable SMME sector,” he said. Castigating corruption, Premier Masualle assured the business sector that civil servants will be prohibited from operating businesses and said there will even be strict monitoring of his executive. “Framed agreements will be entered into with individual MEC’s and the five-year action plan would implement the undertakings made to the electorate. There will be consequences for lack of delivery on the plan,” the premier said. Business people seemed positive about their prospects under the current administration but according to Mr Khaya Mbesi, who is the Communications Manager of CHDBF, actions will speak louder than words. “At more or less the same

The Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (REDISA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University for the development of an environmental rating centre at the university. A spokesperson for the company, Ms Sanelisiwe Maliza, said the facility will be a first in Africa, and the largest of its kind in the Southern hemisphere. The research focus for REDISA will be on extending the life of tyres through the development of the rating system. Construction is scheduled to begin in the last quarter of 2014. The company began its operations in July 2013 with its head office in Cape Town; The Nelson Mandela Bay depot site opened this year in July.

“At the moment, there is only one depot site in Nelson Mandela Bay, and it is set to service 31 dealers in the area,” said Ms Maliza, adding that in May, 131 tonnes of waste tyre were remediated in the province. “Since the implementation of the REDISA Plan, the following milestones have been achieved nationally; 28 811 tons of tyres were remediated by the end of June, 903 dealers are being serviced regularly, and 743 jobs have been created. Unfortunately, we do not yet have confirmed statistics for the Port Elizabeth and East London areas specifically; however, we should in the next six months. “Through the development of a new tyre recycling industry, the REDISA Plan is uplifting individuals from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. time each year we will invite the Premier to evaluate progress or lack thereof with regard to the undertakings he made here,” said Mr Mbesi. Former ANC Chief Whip and current CHDBF Chairperson, Mbulelo Goniwe said it is not their overall aim to rely only on government tenders as they are unsustainable. “We want these programs to unlock opportunities for small business in the eight municipalities of the Chris Hani District. We must initiate projects that we will run and own for the better empowerment of our SMME’s. We cannot depend on tenders because we do not even get them. We need to stand up and work for ourselves," said Mr Goniwe. The gathering was also attended by mayors and political players in the Chris Hani District.

by 2017, we will have created 10 000 new jobs. “Developing an entrepreneurial spirit is an important economic driver and poverty eradicator for South Africa, and as such, the REDISA Plan seeks to support small business owners (both new and existing) and secondary businesses within the informal sector, which will in turn create even more job opportunities,” she said. According to Ms Maliza, there are two-depot sites in the Eastern Cape, one in Nelson Mandela Bay (PEArlington Landfill site, Victory Road, Schoenmakerskop) and another in East London (26 Farm 648, Cuyler Street, Eureka, Wilsonia). Depot sites are also operational in Midrand GP, Bloemfontein FT, Pietermaritzburg KZN, Vissershok WC, Witbank MP, Mossel Bay WC, Kimberley NC, Clairwood Pretoria East, and Springs Storage depot.

Prolonged strikes cost South Africa in many ways, says the Nelson Mandela Business Chamber CEO, Mr Kevin Hustler. Mr Hustler expressed his relief that the four-week NUMSA and engineering sector strikes are over. “Such strikes lead to, amongst others, reputational damage as well as harming South Africa’s attractiveness as a foreign direct investment destination,” said Mr Hustler on Wednesday. Productivity has suffered significantly under the pressures of this month-long strike, and every effort should now be made to get companies back on track to make up for lost time and repair some of the considerable damage done to the South African economy. “It is imperative in the face of numerous challenges that include a scarcity of key skills.” Mr Hustler went on to say that the role of the private sector should be firmly acknowledged as vital to the sustainability and competitiveness of the South African economy in the face of the perception of an unstable labour force, unreliable water and electricity infrastructure, and a lack of investment incentives. “Organised business advocates a collaborative and co-operative approach from all stakeholders to ensure that workable, sustainable solutions are found to avoid such prolonged strike actions in the future,” he said, adding that South Africa could illafford these types of actions if it was to ensure that economic growth is in line with its peer countries and to create the much-needed jobs to address both unemployment and poverty. email: louschoem@gmail.com

Hard at work varnishing the new classroom benches are from left, Nozuko Mqulwana, Freddie Pyon and Khanyisa George.

BY LOURENS SCHOEMAN Volkswagen’s Show of Hands Volunteers dedicated their time and skills to repair and brighten up the Alfonso Arries Primary School in Port Elizabeth on Saturday as their contribution to Mandela Day. VW Group Managing Director, Mr David Powels said the volunteers dedicated much more than the recommended 67 minutes, taking four hours out of their Saturday to transform the school. They painted the school’s new library and carport, landscaped the gardens by planting colourful flowers, bushy shrubs and trees that will one day give shade to Alfonso Arries pupils. The school building and other outdoor areas were renovated to enhance pupils’ learning.Uniform for the two rugby teams were also donated to uplift the school’s sporting codes. “The highlight of the day was the handing over of a brand new library to the school. The library was a brainchild of a partnership between Volkswagen and Breadline Africa, a South African based NGO that specialises in renovating disused shipping containers and recycling them for essential community purposes,” said Mr Powels. “The statistics in South Africa is not good when one looks at an average child’s ability to comprehend reading material when they are assessed in the classroom. There are numerous reasons for this, among them are limited or no access to books and libraries. “For this reason, we thought it would be a fitting initiative in honour of Madiba to partner with Breadline Africa in donating a library to the school. Education is the great engine of personal development and reading is the starting block.” To ensure that the children have rewarding and meaningful encounters with the books in their new library, representatives from the Nal'ibali national reading-for-enjoyment campaign were on hand to help launch the school's new reading club. Ms Nomaxabiso Mkencele, Alfonso Arries Primary School principal, said they are very grateful to the Uitenhage based car manufacturer for the new library and books as it would be improving the reading skills of over 1 900 learners. email: louschoem@gmail.com

BRENDA THROUGH OUR EYES n ‘I am not your weekend special’ BY SISONKE LABASE

Like it or not these are my thoughts on ‘I’m not your weekend special; Portraits on the Life+Style & Politics of Brenda Fassie’ by renowned author and poet Bongani Madondo. This book is a version of events and memories from family, friends, colleagues and admirers of this great artist. Brenda was Mzansi’s celebrity definition of a diva and a pop star. The Brenda Fassie story is one many readers own as she was South Africa’s darling. I remember the first song by Mabrrr that I heard was ‘Mi do do do’ and we used to make up our own lyrics growing up as children “elokishini”. Brenda was a phenomenon, her music was forever on full blast in every home or tavern especially in December. Everyone took claim to her and that is the essence I get from the book, Brenda

was ours. Bongani explains the reasons behind putting to book, “Brenda Fassie established herself and worked herself up the cultural pole to ultimately becoming an icon, an innovator and a seasoned performer. Brenda Fassie emerged out of townships to carve a way for herself, not only as an artist but as a young woman communicating what it meant to be young, gifted and black. “Although I had co-written a stage musical theatre production on MaBrrr before, Brenda still haunted me 24/7. I hope to lay her to rest with this book. At least in my soul,” says Bongani. As elusive as she was, she was adored, through her ups and downs, fights, trials and tribulations. The book has 21 chapters written by various contributors such as Bra Hugh Masekela, Themba K Fassie her brother, Ludwe Maki who was her lover, Vukile Pokwana, Melvyn

Matthews who wrote the mega hit ‘Weekend Special’. Passion, love and adoration are threaded around each word throughout the book. It isn’t a biography but a read that seeks to explore Brenda. Bongani in the book explains it as: “After numerous stopstarts; this book simply desired to be a ‘Love Letter’, with capital ‘L’s’.” I asked him how he chose the contributors, his answers were as follows. “Together with the contributing writers, I set out to explore and tell the story of modern South Africa. By modern I mean, South Africa starting from the Frontier Wars that shaped who we are as people today, up to the Post Apartheid South Africa. Told through the biographical narrative of one it’s most complex and compelling characters, namely Nokuzola Brenda Fassie. I'm Not Your Weekend Special is both her story and ours,” he says. SHOELACE SET TO ROLL n Band ties up 'People of The South' Shoelace ready to rock and roll in Port Elizabeth. Picture by Vuyo Ludidi

BY SISONKE LABASE

Last year, Port Elizabeth based band ‘Shoelace’ signed under ECAVC Records. Their debut album ‘People of the South’ is out. This indie rock band, as they like to classify themselves, is set for great heights. Ndumiso Ntantiso (lead vocalist and guitarist), Zusakhe Gysman (bass), Sandile Suka (guitarist) and Mvuzo Mnyaka (pianist) have known each other since 2009. Why the band decided to go by the name ‘Shoelace’?

Zusakhe explains it as a metaphor of the bond they share in music. “We called ourselves shoelace, like shoelaces we tie everything together. The music is what keeps us together as different as we are,” he says. If you listen to ‘People of the South' you will understand what this band has to offer. Their 10-track album is different and unique. The music has elements of rock with electro-guitars and drums here and there, but the punk rock grit is missing. Its

alternative music, as it has mellow r&b jams and some African essence in the mix. Track one for instance, the title track ‘People of the South’ has such an African feel it reminds me of the late Jabu Khanyile. The second track, ‘Miss Jones’ has a soft rock influence; a romantic love song which really shows off the vocals of Ndumiso. “Our sound is difficult to describe, but it’s a rock album with elements that inspired us and we grew up listening to like gospel, R&B and soul, so it isn’t confined.

Our music speaks for itself,” says Ndumiso. My favourite track on the album has to be ‘Sukundixhesha’, it has a positive message and inspires the listener to aspire to be anything in life and to know your goals are worth the time and not to rush. The song has an Afro-soul feel that builds. The album is easy to listen to, it isn’t hard rock and many can relate to the themes in the songs; songs like ‘Ladia’ a slow song about a first love, ‘Roman Stone’ is about absent fathers. “I wrote most of the songs from experiences, what I saw, what I hear and some as a band we’ll

bounce ideas in studio and come up with tracks,” says Ndumiso. ‘Shoelace’ is set for stardom after they shared the stage with the likes of Micasa (SA), Anne Rosenquist fee (USA), Danny K (SA) and Zakes Bantwini (SA).

To Win a Shoelace CD, call in and answer just a simple question, which record label is the group signed under? Only five cd’s are available so don’t waste time. Competition ends Monday, 4th of August 2014. call in: 043 742 2208.

NMMU SOCCER TEAM TAKE A KNOCK n Building on a new foundation

BY DEREK HINDMAN

IN CHARGE Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University soccer team captain Kurt Duff faces a new challenge. Picture supplied by Varsity Football

After finishing in the inaugural Varsity Football competition last year, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) soccer team must face up to new challengers as the season kicks off. The Varsity football has sparked a new level of interest in soccer, and at least 2 500 fans are pitching up for home fixtures in Nelson Mandela Bay The competition will definitely be a spring board for young players to launch a professional career. Many players will also

realise that this league is the highest in amateur soccer that they will ever play, and be satisfied to move on with their lives. An even bigger horizon is in view since Chippa United decided to play their Premier League home matches at the NMB Stadium this season. The way is clear for talented young players to graduate from the University team into probably the biggest professional league in South Africa, without leaving town. The 2014 Varsity Football Competition commenced earlier this month when the Madibaz (as thNMMU team known) managed to fight out a 2-2 draw with North West University at their home ground, the Xerox Stadium, which is in the NMMU campus. Last Monday, the Madibaz were fairly and squarely beaten 3-0 by the University of Johannesburg. New coach, Graeme Harrison, took the punch on the nose. “Look, UJ played very well, they beat us fair and square. We need to regroup for our match at home next Monday against UCT. “I am not too worried because we are in a rebuilding phase this season. We lost at least ten members of our high-quality squad this season. Fortunately, we still have our stalwart captain Kurt Duff playing this year and our exciting striker Kierin Koert is still in form from last season. He scored

both our goals in our first match. Kurt missed last Sunday’s game an that was a blow. “We will build with these guys and another three or four players who did so well for us last term. “It is not doom and gloom as our new players should be at University for at least three years, Harrison said Team captain, Kurt Duff, left South Africa a few years ago for Scotland where he went on trial at Dunfermline Athletic Football Club. Before that, the 24 year old centre midfielder matriculated at Victoria Park High School. Unfortunately, he had to return home after being denied a work permit but his luck changed when, last season, NMMU football manager, Mark Tommy offered him a bursary. “I think the standard of Varsity Football is very high, and it is one of the most competitive leagues in South Africa,” he said. Duff hopes his hard work and commitment will pay off as he strives to take his football career to the next level. "My own ambitions are to play for my country and to play at the highest level possible. I do not set limits, and I would love to play for my beloved Liverpool one day,” he said.

SOCCER FANS TALK TO US ALFRED BAMLA

GLORIA KARIMATSENGA

It has been settled. Shakes Mashaba is the new South African soccer team coach. The Carling Back Label pre-season match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates was played on Saturday, which normally heralds the start of the new PSL season. At this pertinent point, Eastern Cape Today asked a few fans in East London three questions ahead of the new term. We asked them the following: 1. Are you happy that Shakes Mashaba has been installed as coach of South Africa? 2. What does he have to do to get us to the next World Cup? 3. Do fans place any value on the preseason match that is played each year between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates? ALFRED BAMLA: Kaiser Chiefs fan, is a mechanic in East London, and he said: “I am happy that Shakes is coach. It is important to have a local coach. “However, Safa must start getting development soccer at lower levels right otherwise Bafana will still be going nowhere in a hurry no matter who is coaching. The players’ attitudes must also change. Many of them do not look like they want to play for South Africa. “No, I do not like this opening pre-season match between Chiefs and Pirates. These teams should only clash in the league or big cup fixtures.

VIDO ZOMBA

GLORIA KARIMATSENGA Pirates fan, works for a printing company in East London said: No, I am not happy that Shakes is coach. I think it makes no sense to keep changing the coach. We have been doing this for many years, and it is causing us real problems. I think Gordon Igesund was starting to move the team in the right direction. We should look at what Germany does. They had the same coach in 2010 and 2014. No, I do not like the Black Label Cup. This game is a nothing match. VIDO ZOMBA: Kaizer Chiefs fan, is a car guard in East London, made the following comments: “I am so glad Shakes is a coach. I think Bafana will move forward now as he will fix all the underlying problems. Shakes will need to find a few young players to mix in with these older. Yes, I do like the preseason Pirates Chiefs match” he said. All soccer and sports fans should feel free to contact Derek on email: sport@ectoday. co.za to share their views.
