n Tripartite Alliance at crisis point

ZUMA CALLS FOR UNITY PUTTING OUT FIRES

BY VUYO LUDIDI President Jacob Zuma is eager to unite the Tripartite Alliance ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections. The President was in East London earlier this week where he attempted to iron out issues at the Eastern Cape Alliance Summit. The differences have marred the provincial leadership and manifested in the formation of factions. Although those at the summit were adamant that they would support the ANC in the elections, the SACP recently

President Jacob Zuma attempted to iron out problems in the Eastern Cape this week.

threatened that it would withdraw its support for the ruling party, because SACP members were left out of the nomination process. In fact, reports have surfaced that the Communist Party will contest elections starting in Mbizana, Mzimvubu, Natabankulu and Matatiele Regions. President Zuma emphasised how crucial it was for the Alliance to stay united regardless of the scandalous events “We need one another and the day we do not think so, we are in trouble,” said President said. The summit reaffirmed the relevance of the alliance and that crucial to its wellbeing is unity in action. Some of the issues highlighted were

the slow economic growth rate and land reformation programmes, which many believe is the main cause of the underperformance of the agricultural sector. Some strategic investments in the rural economy have stalled. Some delegates said the issues plaguing the alliance were patronage politics, buying of membership, social distance, personality cults, and factionalism which affect all partners and weaken collective strength of the alliance. The summit further stressed challenges facing the party were differences emanating from personal and individual problems to those that warrant a systematic and societal introspection and intervention. Poverty, unemployment and inequality

remains stubbornly high and that only a radical change to the structure of the economy can effectively deal with these challenges. “Under-development and deprivation is still a lived reality for the majority of our people in the province. We must share the perspective that political development must be embedded into each and every programme of the collective components of the alliance,” SACP Provincial Spokesperson Siyabonga Mdodi. It was resolved to convene Regional Alliance Summits before the local government elections to strengthen the relations.

Chesa Nyama franchise now open in Amalinda BY ERIC GYIMAH Gold Brands Investments, owners of South Africa’s fastest growing food franchise Chesa Nyama, celebrated continued growth with the opening of a new Chesa Nyama store earlier this month. The store is located at Shop 10, in the Amalinda Shopping Centre, in East London. This is the eighth store to open in South Africa and adds to the 300 stores the franchise chain already has operating countrywide. ChesaNyama specialises in flamegrilled meat and chicken dishes. “I am very excited to be part of the Chesa Nyama success story and promise to always put my customers first. I will be working on a loyalty rewards programme which will see customers earning points every time they purchase, which can be redeemed in stores,” said new store owner, Stephen Ross Jefferson. Jefferson also boasted that business had exceeded expectations since opening. “I bought the franchise because it is the number one brand in the country

brand in America. Gold Brands signed an Area Development Agreement with private investors. The new US-based company will launch the ChesaNyama brand in that market and will subsequently franchise the brand and concept across the USA. “The idea of creating a truly South African fast-food brand that provides opportunities for wealth development as well as much needed employment is being realised on a scale that I could not have imagined when I opened the first ChesaNyama store in Johannesburg just four years ago. We owe our success to the hard work of the entire head office team and our suppliers, as well as every franchisee who has poured their hearts into helping to develop the Chesa Nyama brand reputation of providing a traditional South African braaied meat experience at great value.,” concluded Chief Operating Officer of Gold Brands Investments, Mr Stelio Nathanael. trendy MARKET HITS EAST LONDON BY ERIC GYIMAH Yolisa Tshevu and Nomfundo Ralarala are the women behind the Chamberlain Market concept. They have followed a blueprint set for the Johannesburg neighbourhoodgoods markets and adapted it for Buffalo City with the aim of introducing urban regeneration. The East London Chamberlain Market is set to take place on the first and last weekend of every month at 17 Chamberlain Road. The Chamberlain Market will provide local producers an opportunity to market

and sell their goods, ranging from food, clothing, accessories, and many more. So what can you expect? “This is a networking venue where people can come as a group to enjoy themselves over good coffee and food. The aim is to boost the creative sector by purchasing and giving stall holders a chance to do consultations with customers for direct feedback,” stated Yolisa. An assortment of goods from local artisan producers, gourmet merchants, specialty cooks, regional farmers, as well as local designers will be on show. To fill you up, you will find all kinds of made-

to-order nibbles. “We ensured that we brought a concept that would not only boost our economy, but provide an opportunity to have everything sourced locally. It is easy to access, value for money and an opportunity for everyone in East London and surrounding areas to build a direct retailer-consumer relationship,” added Nomfundo. The venue will also host ‘Arts On The Lain’, a pop up exhibition of collectables for homeowners made by rising artists and crafters. Young professionals and everyone looking for quality art at reasonable prices should not miss this

chance. Yolisa and Nomfundo strongly believe that East London has deep roots in the creative sector that need to be discovered. “The home of legends is a playground of raw talent that needs to be extracted by its own people before anyone else does. Let us not depend on larger cities to either showcase talent or source from us, we should be the ambassadors of own art,” concluded Nomfundo. He puts his body on the line. “Every individual gives their very best and really has bought into how we want to play as a team. “We can take a lot out of our performances and build towards our next challenge.” Although The Madibaz has lost their four matches, they have played so far this season Head Coach David Maidza spared praise for Ward. “He showed a maturity and understanding of the game beyond his years. “He is a born leader both by action and by his motivating speeches. “It is clear that he is hungry for success. He has a lot to offer this region and I believe he will go far.”

The outside centre said his focus was now to cement his place in the Varsity Cup team. “Being young, I feel I can bring a new dimension to the way we play. I would like to set an example that the rest of the team can be proud of.” Further down the line, Ward has his sights set on the Eastern Province Currie Cup team and, beyond that, he would like to play for his country. The former Grey High pupil showed his leadership skills when he led the EP Kings to the U19 Currie Cup title last year. “It was an experience that I will never forget. I feel like being part of that has certainly given me an opportunity to take my rugby career to the next level, starting with the Varsity Cup.” His high-intensity training regime reflects his attitude in the pursuit of his goals. “I’m always looking for areas of my game that I can improve on. If you want to get somewhere, you should not shy away from putting in the extra hours. “Inspiration is about your mindset as anything is possible.” Ward, who said he drew inspiration from the way players like Jean de Villiers and Dan Carter played the game, has not lost sight of life beyond rugby. “It comes with a lot of risk, so I find it important to have a sound qualification behind my name.”

South African’s sensational bowler Kagiso Rabada left, and West Indian star batsman Chris Gyle are headed for a showdown when the two teams meet in the ICC World Cup Twenty20 in a Group 1 fixture Friday 25 March.

n Gyle, Radaba on a collision course

TWENTY20 WORLD CUP BONANZA BY DEREK HINDMAN South Africa, face a wounded England today and an upbeat West Indies on Friday 25 March in two crucial Group 1 matches in the ICC World Cup Twenty20. The ICC World Cup Twenty20 got off to a magnificent start earlier this week in India. If the first matches are a yardstick then the event will provide excitement and many surprising results. This was demonstrated when New Zealand posted a low total of less that

126 against India but still easily won the match by taking 10 wickets 79 runs. The result was a big body blow to hosts India who were expected to get the target. Also on Wednesday West Indian superstar, Chris Gyle blasted England to pieces when he smashed 100 run in just 48 balls to see his team past the winning post. His innings included 11 sixes. In doing so Gyle posted a message that the West Indies are also “in it to win it.” Rabada will face his toughest test yet

against West Indies next week when he comes face to face with Gyle. Gyle 36, is a seasoned campaigner at all levels of cricket. In fact, many rate him as the best batsman in the world, particularly at T20 level. For now, South Africa will have to stay focused on beating England today. They did beat England 3-2 in a home series earlier this month winning the last three fixtures on the trot. Rabada has shown that he is a key wicket taker who does not concede runs

easily. One bowler can seldom win a match on his own so it is comforting to know that Dale Steyn will be back to help create pressure. The pair could be the X factor for South Africa at this event. Everyone is focusing on the star the batters each county will field, but two bowlers operating together at maximum efficiency will give any team a chance of winning. New Zealand’s bowler proved this point.

BIG CHANCE FOR QUEEN’S COLLEGE ATHLETE n Triple jump star hopes for best BY DEREK HINDMAN Queen’s College Athlete Bathandwa Mqhayi is hoping to break is own record of 13.84m at triple jump when he takes on the best young athletes at the South African Junior Championship Athletics Meeting in Gauteng this weekend. The meeting is more prestigious than annual SA Schools Championship fixture. Mqhayi qualified to enter the event after he won the Eastern Cape Schools Championships U17 triple jump event that was held in East London earlier

this month. The 17 year-old Grade 11 pupil finished 5th at SA Championships last year at U16 level and 4th in 2014 as an U15 competitor. “I do believe I can win this year but at least I expecting to finish among the first three,” he said. Mqhayi also does high jump. Although he qualified to enter the high jump U17 event at EC Championships he was forced to withdraw as the event clashed with the triple jump competition. His best effort for high jump is 1m83cm. Athletes must achieve

a minimum standard at EC Champs to progress to higher meetings. Mqhayi dedicates at least two hours to athletics training from Monday to Thursday. “I must thank my athletics coach Ndumi Nkhandla who has been with me for at least three years,” Mqhayi said. Last year Mqhayi played rugby for the Queen’s College U16 A team as a centre. “I am not too sure which team I will play for this year as I have been

concentrating on athletics. The SA Champs meeting is the last athletics meeting of the year so I will get back into rugby next week he said. Triple jump is a popular Olympic discipline which requires an athlete to attempt to jump as far as possible by performing a hop, a step, and a jump from a running star. “If all goes well I hope to continue with athletics after school. I am hoping to go tom NMMU or University of Pretoria as they are strong at athletics. I am hoping to take up studies in the health or safety fields,” he added. Mqhayi will only write matric next year so there is every chance, he will qualify for SA Champs again next year.
