15 years, still waiting n Housing promises are still unfulfilled BY BUNTU BARA Residents in Emaplangeni near Alice are angry, as promised houses have still not been built. The community have lost hope after so many years of empty promises. People are still living in two room wooden houses that were built about 15 years ago. This area is mostly comprised of elderly people between the ages of 40 and 86. Community members and

the leaders showed little interest to answering any questions by EC Today regarding the problem. They said that many media houses and government departments have visited the area but the situation has not changed. Even protesting and writing to the municipality had not changed the situation. Residents accused the ANC of presenting councillors that they do not know and that some were not

even members of the Emaplangeni community. Community Head of Housing, William Mjika said they had never seen their award councillor and they do not even know his or her name. “I only know that we have the ward councillor but I don’t know who is that person is”, he said. Metris Tshemla is an 84-year-old resident who lives with her eight grand children in a two room wooden house,

she out about her poor living condition. “Tell me how it is possible for 9 people to live in a two room wooden house? “I don’t see the difference between being homeless and staying in one of these houses because we are not protected from any kind of weather conditions,” she said. The community have tried all avenues to get the houses built. They have engaged the municipality, Luthuli house and the Department of Human Settlements but nothing has happened yet. The community has also written to Public Protector but they are still waiting for the response.

n Gun Free SA calls for full investigation

FIREARMS OFFICIAL fired for fraud BY VUYO LUDIDI

Secretary of the South African

Professional Firearm Training Council (SAPFTC), Andre Van Tonder has been found guilty in an internal enquiry for selling fraudulent firearms proficiency certificates. Van Tonder was immediately expelled from the SAPFTC Board and his training academy Skopos Firearm Training Academy de-credited by

SAPFTC and South African Police Service (SAPS) after he was exposed the media. Van Tonder created fraudulent gun documents, illegally sold firearm proficiency certificates and uploaded the information on the system of the SAPFTC. Gun Free South Africa together with Sonke Justice Network have since put more pressure on the government to investigated the firearms industry

as they believe the incident is not an isolated event. Spokesperson for Sonke Justice Network Mbuyiselo Botha says that that the exposé demonstrates how easily illegal guns are acquired by illegal means and that corruption in the firearms industry is not new. The case is further proof of the ongoing fraudulent practice across the firearms control management chain involving firearms training institutions, firearms

dealers and senior police officers dating back to 2012. “It highlights that to stop the movement of guns from the legal to illegal pool, you have to control legal stocks,” said Mr Botha. Claire Taylor from Gun Free South Africa notes that the incident undermines the myth that gun violence is committed with guns that are illegally held. Woman in South Africa are more at more risk of being shot in her home with a legal gun owned by her partner than of being shot by a stranger. “This incident reveals another reality, that at least some, but possibly thousands of licensed guns are acquired illegally through fraud and corruption. This makes us all a target,” said Ms Taylor. Gun Free South Africa Board member, Ronald Menoe added that whenever profit can be made, there is a risk of fraud and corruption. “Until those profiting from the firearms industry are removed from having any role in implementing the Firearms Control Act, this risk will always exist. As such, our call for government to fully investigate the firearms industry following this exposé includes an appeal to explore ways to separate profit from implementation,” said Mr Menoe. The SAPFTC says that van Tonder has been found guilty and they are closely looking at all of his work over the past years for more irregularities. He might face more charges. politics@ectoday.co.za

n Style Crush week - Siya Beyile

The Threaded Man BY ERIC GYIMAH Our style crush this week is South African fashion blogger, stylist, all-round creative and one of Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 to Watch for 2015, Siya Beyile aka The Threaded Man. The 21-year-old blogger has established himself as a voice in the local fashion landscape, working with top designers to thread his way into one of South Africa’s most difficult markets. He’s been styling Nomuzi Mabena from MTV Base for almost a year and boasts a following off just over 10 000 Instagram followers. “The Threaded Man is an extension of who I am and is brought to life in the form of a blog. I am a modern African Man who understands the importance of culture but remain progressive. I pay attention to detail and how I present and carry myself,” says Siya. If you are wondering where it all started for Siya, it began when he registered at the fashion institute LISOF in Pretoria, where the blogging began. Finding it difficult to sketch and be creative, the determined blogger still had a real finesse for fashion theory and trends, which shaped his eagerness to start The Threaded Man. Siya then went to intern for fashion icon Dion Chang, one of South Africa's

most celebrated trend analysts. “I worked with Dion Chang at Flux Trends and, in my opinion, that certified my role as a trend forecaster and trend analyst for men’s fashion,” stated Siya. If you are wondering what he has to do on a daily basis as a blogger and trend analysts then you are looking at someone who helps brands communicate their message with modern African men through creative directing, styling ads, forecasting trends, creating content on Siya’ s website and consulting. “I’ve been a brand ambassador for Flying Fish for the last two years. Last year, I signed with TITAN watches as a consultant and brand ambassador. I also worked on the Carling Blue Label television commercial recently,” added Siya. Siya’s ultimate vision is to become Africa’s largest men’s fashion and lifestyle portal. The platform will invest in young designers and grow the menswear scene in the continent. It will eventually become a channel to online stores where people can go and buy the look. The Threaded Man is always evolving, but its core will always be the same. Reporter1@ectoday.co.za

STABILITY THE WATCH WORD AT CHIPPA n Coach believes defence must improve BY DEREK HINDMAN Following a turbulent period where coaches came at went for numerous reasons; Chippa United have offered current coach Dan Malesela a three-year contract. With the Easter holiday break in fixtures upon us Chippa United occupy sixth place on the PSL log. In truth, their position is much better at this stage than most fans could have expected. Malesela was trust into the coaching hot seat at the club on 18 December for the match against Bloemfontein Celtic which United won 2-1. Since then Malesela has been at the helm last 12 PSL fixtures of which United have registered six wins two draws and four loses. He is a former Orlando Pirates and Manning Rangers central defender. Malesela who was born in Pretoria believes the defence must improve to make sure that the goal of a top eight finish for the club is attained. “My philosophy if a team scores two goals in each match that side should win far more fixture that they lose if the defence is tight. That is why I am not happy with our defence yet. “Our last match against Maritzburg

United was a case in point. We were leading 2-1 only to concede a goal in the last minute,” Malesela said. Chippa United also played two of their home matches at Buffalo City in East London since Malesela took charge. The

"Chippa United coach Dan Malesela feels that his team is on course for a top eight finish, in the PSL this season."

CALLING THE SHOTS venue proved a happy hunting ground for Chippa who beat both Jomo Cosmos and Ajax Cape Town at the venue. Malesela conceded that picking up full points in East London was a big boost. However, he would not be drawn into talking about any other fixtures that might be played at

matter,” the coach said. Earlier this month Chippa United slipped on a “banana skin” as they were knocked out of the Nebank Cup when they were beaten by National First Division leaders Baroka FC. “I think were a bit complacent. They did play well and we cannot take that away from them. It is a pity because winning the cup means big money for a club. “It also means that we play a few less games this season. I wanted to play as many as possible this year so that I could better access the clubs needs for next season,” Malesela added. The coach expressed view that flexibility on the field is key to success. “I like to start a match with an attacking 4-3-3 formation. As the game evolves I need a squad that is flexible enough to change formation two or even three times during a match if need be,” Malesela pointed out. United’s next fixture will be played on Sunday 10 April in Pretoria against a resurgent SuperSport United... Chippa player can reasonably expect a break from training over the Easter weekend but after that, Malesela will be waiting at the training ground to do some hard work on that defence before April 10, because the team faces another away fixture against Polokwane City on 16 April.

the FOCUS is ON KAGISO RABADA HIGH HOPES Cricket fans will hoping that fast bowler Kagiso Rabada can lift his game again after South Africa were eliminated during the early stages of the ICCTwenty20 World Cup in India last week. Rabada has had a grueling schedule since the end of last year and deserves a well earned break...

Kagiso Rabada (born 25 May 1995) is a South African cricketer who schooled at St Stithians Boys College and matriculated in 2013. He now represents the Lions. He is a right-arm fast bowler who bats left-handed. He is known by his nickname of 'KG'. He made his debut for the Gauteng in the CSA Provincial One-Day Competition against Border in December 2013. He was chosen to represent South Africa's Under-19 side for the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. As South Africa won the tournament, he

was their best bowler claiming the 2nd most wickets in the tournament at an economy rate of 3.10. He also claimed the best figures of the tournament: 6/25 against Australia A. This led to him being dubbed "the fastest and most feared bowler in the competition". His performances in the Under-19 World Cup saw him catapulted him into the Lions franchise side for their last two games of the Sunfoil Seriesseason. He took 7 wickets for 186 in these two matches. In February 2015, Rabada took a record 14 wickets in

a match for Lions against Dolphins, including 9 for 33 in the second innings his 14 for 105 are the best figures in the franchise era of South African cricket. In February 2016, it was announced that Rabada had signed a short-term deal to play county cricket for Kent in June and July of the English domestic season. He made his Twenty20 International debut for South Africa against Australia on 5 November 2014. He made his One Day International debut for South Africa against Bangladesh on

10 July 2015,achieving best figures of 6/16 on debut. He also became only the second player, after Taijul Islam, to take a hat-trick on debut in an ODI match. He made his Test debut for South Africa against India on 5 November 2015. In the fourth Test of England's 2015–16 tour of South Africa, he finished with figures of 13/144 helping his team win the game. In the process, he became the youngest South African to take a ten-wicket haul in a Test, and the figures were his team's second best ever, after Makhaya Ntini's 13/132.
