NSFAS facing crisis n Call to share cost burden Rhodes students protest topless as against what they perceive to be the University’s inadequacy to deal with rape cases.

n Rhodes University students up in arms.

rape protest heats up BY THULETHU NGQOKWE AND BUNTU BARA Rhodes University (RU) students have escalated their protest against sexual violence on the campus by going topless in their latest demonstration were they also blocked roads leading to the university campus. The saga began after a list of 11 names of the alleged sexual abuse offenders circulated social media and has been forwarded to the RU management. The protesters demanded that these individuals be immediately expelled from the university. Last week the Gender Action Group held a campaign highlighting how inadequately the university dealt with cases of assault and rape.

The university rejected a demand from the protestors to summarily deal with students that had been named on the list of possible offenders without investigating the allegations. Vice Chancellor Sizwe Mabizela, said they have called on all students who have been assaulted or raped by the people whose names appear on the list to come forward. RU has set up a task team to investigate allegations of sexual violence on campus. "We can’t act until someone reports, provides us with a statement. As soon as we receive a statement, we will be able to hold a pre-suspension hearing with the accused with a view to suspend them.” Mabizela said. A university meeting addressing

men on issues such as rape culture and its meaning in society was held on Wednesday to educate men about rape culture. Well Known Activist Malaika Mahlatsi attended the meeting and addressed the audience said. "Men are important in this conversation because women don't rape themselves," s said Khanya Funda, a student and participant in the protest currently said that “The situation is very tense on campus, people are angry and rightly so. Rape is and shouldn’t be made a light matter” said Ms Funda. The students are demanding to speak to the law facility’s dean about the rape allegations as a majority of the accused are law students. Rhodes University spokesperson

Catherine Deiner was unavailable for comment Some people took to social media to air their views under the hashtag #RUreferencelist and #nakedprotest. On Facebook, Sakhile Mnci wrote that “black women are the most disrespected, unprotected people by both race and gender in South Africa, my brothers we have failed our mothers, sisters, friends & future wives; we have failed our daughters too.” Maps Maponyana tweeted: “What men fear the most when going to prison is what women fear everyday by simply walking in the street. That will give you a perspective”. Kese Given Viwe: “This must be given urgent attention by the university!!...but I think they should have left the braz on. #AlutaContinua

n Students shocked by senseless violence

FOUR DEAD 16 HURT AT FORT HARE BY BUNTU BARA Fort Hare University students were left in a state of shock last weekend after four students died and sixteen others were left injured after various violent incidents occurred at out at the Alice campus. One student died after he fell from third floor of one of the university residence building. Lungisani Mopopi a student who resided at Beda Residence where the incident took place said he heard some noise around 3am. Latter he heard someone crying when he went out he saw a man lying down in the basement floor full of blood. Another student at Beda Residence said he doesn’t believe that the incident was an accident or a suicide attempt because there was blood on the top floor where the victim was standing before he fell down to the basement floor. “I believe that if he fell by mistake the blood should be on the basement floor only and not also on the top

floor. There was a conflict between him and his friends prior the tragic occurrence,” said the student who asked that he remain anonymous. Reliable sources at Alice Police Station said they also do not believe that the incident was an accident because of the information provided. “There is something fishy about this, I think there is someone behind all this because we also find drops of blood in his room and on the top the stairs in third floor,” a police spokesperson said. There other two students were stubbed to death at a bash on Friday night, and the other one student collapsed while he was training at the campus. The 16 students suffered knife wounds. They were sent to Victoria hospital and discharged on the same day. The University of Fort Hare Student Affairs Division and SRC President was not available for comment and arrests have been made

TROUBLE AT FORT HARE UNIVERSITY

Ann Harris Wolfe (Pearson) 1938 - 2016 n She lived a difficult life BY TERRY BELL On Monday, April 11, four days before her 78th birthday, Ann Harris died at her home in the English county of Suffolk. An anti-apartheid fighter and the widow of the only man classified "white" to be hanged for a political offence against the apartheid state, she had suffered for many years with Parkinson’s Disease. She and her young son were hounded out of South Africa by the police special branch after John Harris went to the gallows in April 1965. He did so, singing the international protest anthem, We Shall Overcome, which was banned by the apartheid state. At a time of mass arrests and detentions in 1964, John Harris was determined that resistance should still be shown to exist. So he placed a small explosive

charge and several containers of petrol in a suitcase on the main “whites only” concourse of the Johannesburg railway station. On the case he left a note: “Back in 10 minutes”. He then telephoned warnings to newspapers and to the police to clear the concourse. These were ignored; the case exploded and a young girl was badly injured, her grandmother fatally. Whether or not the case was moved is still a matter of conjecture. Ann, with an infant son, was not involved in the activities of the African Resistance Movement (ARM) to which John belonged although she supported fully resistance to the apartheid state. The ARM was established by members of the Liberal Party and several members of the underground Socialist League. Together with John, she had been involved over the years in antiapartheid campaigns, especially in the sports arena. Born in Birmingham, England, she arrived in South Africa when her family emigrated in 1948 and lived in Krugersdorp. At her Catholic secondary school she met and became friends with Jane Harris who introduced her to her brother, John. The two became inseparable and together attended the University of Witwatersrand where they

trained as teachers. Her Roman Catholic family disapproved of the relationship because John was an outspoken atheist, and they had to wait until Ann was 21, so not requiring legal parental permission, before they married. Having entered university at age 16, both were already teaching in 1959, Ann at the Indian High School in Johannesburg alma mater of many activists. It was there that she and John first made contact with Dennis Brutus, founder of the SA Non-racial Olympic Committee (Sanroc). After Brutus was banned, John took over at Sanroc with Ann supplying support. Then John was banned. As the government clampdown intensified, following the arrest of the underground ANC leadership at Rivonia, and with most of the ARM members in jail, John was one of the few known activists left free. He decided that a dramatic gesture was needed to “bring whites to their senses and make them realise that apartheid could not be sustained”. It now seems probable that the police knew in advance of John Harris’s plan; they certainly were warned to clear the concourse after he had placed his suitcase bomb and did not do so. But they were subsequently able to use the incident in an attempt

to justify their brutal crackdown, even maintaining that John Harris was part of a terror plot by “Communists”. When he was arrested, John Harris tortured and beaten, his jaw broken in three places. His intention, he made clear — and his actions bore this out — was that he had not had any intention to hurt or kill anyone. He planned a dramatic gesture in a “whites only” environment to show that, as Ann said, “there are people of all races opposed to apartheid and prepared to take action against it”. Shortly before he was to be executed, John told Ann that she should, after his death, write a letter to him as if he were still alive. She did. In a lengthy missive she noted: “It is an honour to be hanged by Mr Vorster (Prime Minister John Vorster) just as it is an honour to be banned by him.” But life became increasingly difficult. She was a solo mother and the police ensured that she would be unable to find work in South Africa. Constant harrassment by the security branch also continued, forcing Ann to seek refuge in Britain. There she met and married environmentalist Martin Wolfe and together they created the internationally renowned experimental farm, Wakelyns. In 2005, John Harris’s name

was the first to be inscribed on the Wall of Remembrance in Freedom Park on the hill opposite the former “hanging prison”, Pretoria Central, now C-Max. At the ceremony Ann, son David, daughter Lynn and other members of the family joined former comrades, friends and ex political prisoners to honour John. Earlier, members of the family and a group of friends gathered outside the prison gates where they sang We Shall Overcome. Ann was also present at another event in December 2011 when the families of those hanged for political offences were invited to a memorial in Pretoria, centred on C-Max. It was the opening of the old death row cells and the gallows as part of a museum. Although later crippled by Parkinsons disease, Ann still managed, using a motorised wheelchair, to be actively involved in Wakelyns farm almost to the day she died. Her attitude is best summed up In a submission she gave to to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission: “I personally feel that I was privileged to live and work for a short time amongst a group of heroes who put their liberty and, in the end their lives, on the line in the struggle.” Hamba Kahle, Qabane

n Bridging the divide for young people

UHF STUDENTS get to WORK BY THULETHU NGQOKWE In a bid to help prepare young people for the critical transition from education into the world of work, Absa Bank, which is part of the Barclays Group, ran a ‘ReadytoWork,’ activation at the University of Fort Hare in East London on Wednesday, 13th of April 2016. ReadytoWork is an employability initiative that helps to train and equip young people life after school. The initiative is a free training curriculum that seeks to empower

young people with the training and skills they need to enhance their employability and entrepreneurial prospects. It provides access to world class learning content, focused on work, people, money and entrepreneurial skills, through online content, face-toface training and work exposure. The ultimate goal is to give young people a choice to better develop their employability prospects or to become self-employed through starting their own businesses. Sazini Mojapelo,

Barclays Africa Head of Citizenship says passed this comment. “A key priority of our citizenship strategy is to help young people gain access to the skills and opportunities they need to unlock their potential. We have identified education and skills development as a space in which we can make a sustainable contribution through initiatives such as ReadytoWork.” Jonathon Musilah, an acquisition banker at ABSA, asserted that completion of each module acts as an informal

aptitude certifying that an individual now holds that particular skill. The success of the initiative was evident in the great turnout from Fort Hare students at both East London and Alice campuses. “The event was certainly beneficial to all students hoping to gain the necessary skills for the workplace ad even entrepreneurial skills”, said Maxwell Sibanda, a Masters of Commerce student. “The free airtime doesn’t hurt either”, he added shyly.

A good time to start your own business

n Startups have space to grow in South Africa

BY EC REPORTERS A stagnate job market and an expected growth of less than 2% does not seem extremely glamorous upon first glance to potential investors. Yet, South Africa may prove to be the pinnacle of hope if we are to have any confidence at all. The startup climate in both Johannesburg and Cape Town are starting to restore confidence in an otherwise upsetting battle. For example, Silvertree Capital has already pledged to invest $10 million dollars in South African startups. The company’s founder, Manuel Koser says he’s making this pledge due to the fact that he sees the enormous market potential in the South African economy. He’s betting on the country’s middle class’ increased buying power. Yet, South Africa tends to be overlooked in favor of Lagos

and Nairobi. However, things seem to be improving in the last couple of years. Even last year, South African startups raised nearly 55 million dollars according to reports by Disrupt Africa. Additionally, the country has produced some real contenders in the startup world. For instance, startups like WhereisMyTransport, VIGO and Sweep South have attracted a lot of attention. Perhaps, the most notable company is Knife Capital, a venture capital firm. Just last month it has reported a revenue of almost ZAR 60 million. One of its accelerator programs, Grindstone has already taken ten plus businesses under its supervision and by doing so it has created nearly 100 jobs in the 1 year. Grindstone reports its portfolio to be growing at 70% consistently on a year-onyear basis. However, Vasiliy from the cloud backup business

CloudBackupRobot.com feels uncertain about South Africa’s ability to appeal to western markets with the Rand. But proponent of the startup culture, Roger Norton from the Silicon Cape Initiative says that he believes that startups thrive in times of struggle. He remains hopeful that startups will revive local markets and put innovation of the forefront. He believes that both the number of VC funds and the number of new startups are increasing in recent years. Silicon Cape Initiative is one such organization that work with early stage startups closely to get them connected with angel investors. And there are more organizations trying their best to positively impact the entire ecosystem. Norton believes that this means nothing but good for the future of South African startups in the years to come. news@ectoday.co.za

n Reprieve for East London residents after days without water

Water Crisis strikes EL BY VUYO LUDIDI After three days of suffering, things went back to normal in East London as the Buffalo City Metro (BCM) announced that water supply is would soon return to all residents by Saturday. Earlier this week, almost half of East London’s residential areas had their water supply cut off as a result repair works being conducted in Mzonyana Dam. BCM Spokesperson Thandy Matebese said that the siphon, which supplies raw water for treatment was caused by a failure of a massive inverted siphon which draws water from a holding dam

and pushes it into the treatment works at Umzonyana Water Treatment Works, but technicians had been working tirelessly and now it is restored. “Currently the Umzonyana Water Treatment Works is operating at full production and some of the areas are already receiving water, that is, Dawn, Wilsonia, Scenery Park, Duncan Village, Amalinda, Braelyn, Westbank, Greenfields, Nahoon, Berea” said Mr Matebese. Due to the system configuration and elevation, the last areas to get water will be high lying areas in Vincent, Beacon Bay and Gonubie. Residents decried the poor

communication from the municipality, having not been forewarned about the water outages. Residents had to stand in long queues just fill up water in water from trucks that were dispatched by the BCM. Schools, businesses were forced to shut down and there are reports that some hospitals had to turn away some patients. In the meantime tankers started hauling water to residents, hospitals and old age homes. “We dispatched water tankers to hospitals and old age homes as this is our first level of intervention. Water tankers were also dispatched to communities as. Reservoir levels are critically low

throughout East London and will affect all the supply zones. The works of installing the pipes was on finished on Wednesday. Fully recovery of the system pressure will take 3 to 6 days” said Mr matebese The water problem in the BCM is the latest episode in series of water problems that have not only plagued the municipality but the whole country. As early as last year, government warned South Africa could be facing a water crisis and that citizens should use water wisely. The latest incident could be the first of many to come. politics@ectoday.co.za

SECOND ALBUM FOR SHOELACE BY ERIC GYIMAH The five piece Indie/Kasi rock band, Shoelace as it is known is back in studio and working on their second album after the success of their debut album ‘People of the South’. The group of instrumentalists have been well received by the public who regard the musicians as young black expressive musicians. The group will be receiving musical assistance from a renowned music producer, Gabi le Roux who is currently in East London working on the project at the Eastern Cape Audio visual Centre (ECAVC) recording studios. Gabi Le Roux is a multi-instrumentalist,

Gabi produced Mandoza’s solo album and co-composed the huge hit song, Nkalakatha that got both White and Black South Africans dancing to the tune. Nkalakatha remains one of the biggest and most popular songs that transcends across race in South Africa. Shoelace has since received a few accolades after their first debut album titled People of The South in 2014. The band performed at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival, Moshito Music Festival, National Arts Festival, and were

One of the songs to look out for when their new album drops in June 2016 is a song titled Heart of the Lion. The song narrates the story about the iconic Nelson Mandela’s journey of being a political prisoner, returning home, becoming president and symbolizing peace, hope and forgiveness. He emphasised that he will make sure that Shoelace does not sound like any other rock band out there, as they are unique with strong African music elements in their sound, furthermore standing out from their competitors. The Director of ECAVC, Sy Ntuli, stated that ECAVC was glad to have acquired services of an experienced music producer of Gabi Le Roux’s calibre, who has demonstrated beyond doubt his capabilities of coming up with amazing cross-over sounds in the past, while working with top artists like Mandoza. n Oliver Empowerment Awards a big hit

CDC SCOOPS THREE MAJOR AWARDS n The right questions need to be asked

BY ERIC GYIMAH The Coega Development Corporation (CDC), a leading catalyst for championing of socio-economic development in the Eastern Cape and South Africa walked away with three prestigious awards at the 15th Annual Oliver Empowerment Awards held at Emperors Palace near Johannesburg on the 14th April 2016. The Oliver Empowerment Awards celebrate companies and individuals for their contribution and commitment to empowerment in South Africa; recognise the efforts of businesses, civil society, the public sector and truly outstanding individuals. In its 15th year, the Oliver Empowerment Awards is South Africa’s most established and premier awards event for leadership and innovation in empowerment and transformation, creating a legacy of inspiration for the country’s business elite. The CDC won the ‘Legends of Empowerment & Transformation’, an award given to the organisation that makes a significant contribution to transformation in South Africa. This award aims to inspire and encourage other organisations and is given at the discretion of the Oliver Empowerment Awards Editorial Board and not necessarily awarded every year. The Job Creation Award sponsored

by Rand Water for an organization that has contributed positively toward the alleviation of poverty in South Africa, through the sustainable creation of meaningful employment. The third award of the night was for top Empowered Vision 2030 Award, sponsored by MMI Holdings which supports the objectives of the National Development Plan 2030 (NDP). “We are absolutely pleased with the honour bestowed upon the CDC by the Oliver Empowerment Awards. These awards are an indication of CDC’s continued commitment to improving the lives of ordinary South Africans, while creating hope and transforming the economic landscape of the Eastern Cape and greater South Africa, “said CDC unit head of marketing & communications, Dr Ayanda Vilakazi. “Being presented with the Job Creation Award, three years in a row is indeed an honour but, above all, it bears testament to the fruits of our labour. We strongly believe the best way to tackle the triple challenge of poverty, inequality and unemployment is by creating a sustainable environment that will feed the longevity of CDC’s skills development and training programmes. ” explains Dr Vilakazi.

Mathahle Stofile, founded the Matte Project, which aims to spark conversations about beauty among women of colour and making black women question the way they view themselves. The South African beauty editor explored the politicisation of black women and their looks during a talk titled The Short History of Black Beauty. “I find it impossible to talk about black beauty without talking about the politics of black beauty. I’m also not a fan of the term ‘black beauty’ because no one talks about ‘white beauty’,” she said. Stofile took the audience through her own formative beauty experiences, speaking about the relationship her mother and grandmother had with their own looks. She described her mother as a woman whose beauty regimen consisted mainly of “lipstick and perfume”. Stofile’s mother was loyal to Clinique products because their advertising featured no faces; it was purely about the product, unlike other international brands whose adverts featured only white women. “Because ‘Clinique’ didn’t exclude my mother, it automatically included her,” she said. Her mother was a student at Fort Hare University in the mid-1960s when the Black Consciousness Movement was taking off. In contrast, Stofile’s grandmother used skinlightening creams and believed

in the idea that lighter skin is better skin. “If racism is the child of white supremacy, then colourism has to be the grandchild. “Possibly the biggest crime of apartheid is teaching us lies about ourselves, teaching us to believe that we are not beautiful,” said Stofile. Stofile then touched on Hollywood and how it continued to push racism but colourism too. Using the casting of Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra as a classic example, Stofile spoke about the invisibility of black women in pop culture and the media. White men, white women and black men receive tons of media space, but when it comes to black women, we only have space for one ‘Lupita Nyong’o’at a time, or ‘Viola Davis’ at a time”, she said. “Simone was a very darkskinned, broad-nosed, widemouth black woman who suffered because of it. It’s ironic that an actress who is darkskinned, broad-nosed and widemouthed couldn’t even land the role of Simone,” she said. Because of their portrayal in the media and the lasting effects of racism on their sense of self-worth, Stofile believes black women’s appearances will always be political in one way or another. That is until such a time as white privilege doesn’t exist.”. “I wonder if there ever will be a time when our beauty is not associated with our politics, where we can be beautiful without being ‘exotic’, without being ‘edgy.’ I know that time will come, but it won’t be any time soon,” she added.

Virgil Prins presents the ‘Unnecessary’ comedy stand-up show, which will be held live at Guild Theatre on the 26 April, 2016. Virgil who hails from East London attended Buffalo Flats Primary School and completed his high school career at Hudson Park. Prins moved to Johannesburg to grow with his comedy craft. He

felt limited in the Eastern Cape as the platforms for growth did not provide enough of a sustainable career. “I have however, performed regular shows on campus whilst I was still studying at Rhodes University.” said Prins. He also added that he performed at bi-weekly shows at 9Miles in Vincent Park and also an opening act called Color Mine for veteran Eastern Cape Comedian,

Ndumiso Linde, a show called ‘Color Mine’ at Hemingways. “I’ve always had a good sense of humour and I was always the ‘funny’ friend in the group.” His material focuses on his life journey, mixed with social commentary and pieces of abstract and observational humour. ‘My comedy is definitely not your mundane topics such as stereotypes about racism, classism

or sexism type of humour. I have definitely made effort to go about my inner-humour into a more intelligent and socially aware type manner,” he said. The ‘Unnecessary’ stand-up show tickets will be available at computicket for R80 and R100 at the door. “People can expect a lot of laughter, on a variety of topics. My style of humour has been described as "naughty, but nice", and is suitable for the whole family”, Virgil concluded.

THE BULLDOGS ARE UP AND RUNNING

BY DEREK HINDMAN The Border Bulldogs rugby team are on a roll after beating the Lions in Johannesburg and the Sharks in East London last weekend. As Border prepare to tackle the EP Kings at The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium Port Elizabeth on Saturday 23 April a glance at the Currie Cup tells a different story to

the Border fans have been used to for many years. This time it is the EP Kings that are bottom of the log with no points from their two matches played. Border are sitting on 9 points in fourth place just behind Griquas, Boland and SWWD Eagles are have all earned ten points so far this year. The EP Kings are

in a sorry state. The financial woes at Eastern Province have been well documented. In addition the Kings have had to pass on a huge number of players to the Southern Kings squad. All the problems at Eastern Province will not deter the Bulldogs from takingthe fullest advantage of the situation since the Kings and Border have always

been arch rivals. The Kings have normally battered the Bulldogs but it looks like the Bulldogs have a great chance to take some revenge. Later in the day at the Same venue the Southern Kings will take on the inform Golden Lions in a Vodacom Super Rugby fixture. The Lions who beat Western Province last weekend

The Border Bulldogs players as named above will tackle rivals Eastern Province Kings in the third Currie Cup match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday 23 April. n Title holders to mentor juniors

NEW APPROACH TO WOMEN’S CHALLENGE Next month’s SPAR Women’s Challenge in Port Elizabeth is set to play its part in bolstering the future of women’s road running in South Africa. The all-women race is the second of five events in the Grand Prix series, which has announced an innovative mentorship programme for junior athletes. The Grand Prix series was introduced in 2007 to consolidate the various

Women’s Challenges around the country into a single series for elite runners. As part of the initiative, each of the titleholders will take a junior under her wing. These youngsters will travel with their mentors and receive advice about training, strategy and the various other aspects of competition. René Kalmer, who has

won the PE race 11 times between 2000 and 2012, said she thought the mentorship programme was a good idea. “I feel privileged to be able to give something back,” said the triple Grand Prix champion. The juniors will find that running is not always plain sailing and that their mentors will be there to help them through the bad patches,” Kalmer said.

Grand Prix founder Ian Laxton said the series had been a beacon of light for women of all ages. “At the elite end every single athlete considers these races to be the equivalent of national championships. “The addition of the junior mentorship element will assist South African running to have a new generation of world-class runners,” she said.

TINKLER, MOSIMANE TO LOCK HORNS BY DEREK HINDMAN Orlando Pirates coach Eric Tinkler seemed unfazed when his team drew Mamelodi Sundowns in a Nedbank Cup quarterfinal earlier this month. “We are not worried about having drawn Sundowns. In cup football you have to beat the team that is in front of you on the day to go forward and that is what we will aim to do,” Tinkler said. The big day is here and Pirates will have prove that they are worthy of a place in the semi final of this lucrative cup competition. Failure to progress will mean that the Orlando Pirates trophy cabinet will be remain empty this season.

weeks, but Pirates head into this match as underdogs because Lehlohonolo Masalesa is serving a suspension. That could turn out to be an advantage as Pirates often play their best football when their backs are against the wall. However, they will have to close down midfield kingpin Hlompho Kekana on the day. Pirates cannot underestimate him and they cannot leave him unattended. CLASH OF CLASHES Although Kaizer Chiefs have dropped Orlando Pirates coach Eric Tinkler left, and the Mamelodi Sundowns boss Pitso Mosimane out of the action already two of the clubs will square up in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals on Saturday 23 April. One man will take is team on to former coaches Stuart Baxter and Muhsin the semi final and the other with will bow out of the competition. Ertuğral are still in with a chance of winning the cup. This weekend one of the two coaches will also have to take Sundowns who are current Absa Premier hang on to win the league and end up as a bow. Baxter has taken over as coach League leaders have plenty to play for as Nedbank Cup winners. Both Pirates and at SuperSport United and Ertugral is they stand to “do the double” if they can Sundowns have been in fine form in recent running the show at Black Aces.
