new radio station live BY VUYO LUDIDI The much anticipated online radio station Keith Ngesi Radio (KNR) by veteran media practitioner Keith Ngesi is now fully operative on cyberspace. Mr Ngesi left his post as Communications Manager at the Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) after more ten years working in service to start his own online radio station. Ngesi says KNR offers programming mainly based on Spirituality, Motivation, Entertainment and Current Affairs, considered the four pillars. “The advantage of an online radio station is that it can be accessed anywhere around the world because it uses the internet. The main purpose of the radio station is disseminating positive messages that will appeal to the

general audiences of the Eastern Cape” said Mr Ngesi. Mr Ngesi has taken pride in carefully selecting new broadcasters who understand what KNR is about. Audiences can expect a broad range of subject matters to be discussed which are rooted on the four pillars. It will offer programmes anchored by a crew of life coaches, motivational speakers, radio personalities and church leaders. The station will be online for four hours a day with most shows broadcast in the afternoon. Those using the app will get notifications every time the station goes on air. KNR can be accessed using any device that can access the internet such as cellphones, laptops, PC’s or a tablet by either downloading the generic app Listen2myradio.com or go to tknshow.

listen2myshow.com The radio station has already been welcomed by some of the top officials of the province such as Premier Phumulo Masualle and Public Works MEC Thandiswa Marawu. Ngesi says he is taking advantage of the ever changing landscape of the media industry and believes his show will be a trendsetter for other media practitioners to follow suit. “KNR is a new digital communication innovation which is set to make a mark in the world of broadcasting, when people tune in we want them to feel motivated, spiritually uplifted, entertained and informed” he said. Ngesi said the station also had an online WhatsApp number 072 266 6618 where listeners can interact and get live feedback.

Former soldiers ask government to provide aid BY EC REPORTERS Scores of Struggle Veterans are living poverty-stricken lives with some homeless, some turning to a life of crime, others jobless, unable to adjust in South Africa. Military veterans, consisting of former members of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the Azanian People’s Liberation Army (Apla), Azanian National Liberation Army and soldiers of the former Bantustans say their hearts are already sinking at the prospect of a bleak future even though government promised to aid them. Recently APLA and MK soldiers took

to the streets to urge government to fulfill its obligation to look after former soldiers and provide for basic necessities such as housing, medical aid benefits primarily. Pained by the life they are living, the veterans said after all these years they are still struggling to get the necessary help. Lennox Kona is over 60 and has never had a house of his own, and he believes this will not change in his immediate future. “The country has forsaken the men and women who bravely offered their lives to end apartheid. We are treated like animals just like in the apartheid days, even today our sacrifices were in vain.”

Kona remains a proud freedom fighter and will not let his circumstances define him. “What pains me the most is that we have been betrayed by our politicians, betrayed by the military and betrayed by our generals. Our pain has only accumulated over the past 21 years.” said Kona Kona said the sacrifices made were only to secure the lives of a few and he questioned why the government did not address the plight of thousands of military veterans. “We talk about democracy and we talk about freedom, but I don’t know freedom.

I’ve never known it. I’ve travelled all over the country, Africa, looking for freedom, but I could not find it.” Sibeko Theophelus said military veterans weren’t waiting for handouts, they wanted what was promised to them. “We want to help save our communities. We have the skills and the know-how. There’s no freedom at all in our communities if our people are scared to venture outside after dark. Most of us were not just trained just to be killers or trigger-happy soldiers, we want to save the community” said Theophelus news@ectoday.co.za

n Pressure mounts on President Zuma to step down

BETWEEN A ROCK AND HARD PLACE BY BUNTU BARA ANC veterans have increased the pressure on President Jacob Zuma to step down as the state president of South Africa with the latest open letter from Struggle Stalwart Ahmed Kathrada creating much furore to an already unsettled public. Former Minister of Finance, Trevor Manuel also joined the call for President Zuma to resign. Trevor Manuel made a point that a violation of the key oath of office of the Head of State places South Africa in deep crisis. "The violation of the key oath of office of the head of state, which I think is a deep crisis. I think it’s in all of our interests that the president actually steps aside" said Mr Manuel Last month the Constitutional Court ruled that President Jacob Zuma must pay back the money that was spent on non-security features on his private residence in Nkandla.

This is inline with the remedial action by the Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Modonsela’s report on the Nkandla debacle. National Treasury Department will now calculate the exact amount that the president must pay. Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng said that the National Treasury must determine the reasonable costs of those measures implemented by the Department of Public Works at the President’s Nkandla homestead that do not relate to security. These structures include visitors’ centre‚ the amphitheatre‚ the cattle kraal‚ the chicken run and the swimming pool. The Constitutional Court ruling upraised opposition parties and ordinary citizens demands for President Zuma to stepdown. Democratic Alliance failed to remove the president from his office through an impeachment

process in Parliament earlier this week. As 143 Members of Parliament voted in favour of the motion, while 233 voted against the president’s removal from office for failing to uphold, defend and respect the Constitution.

In Johannesburg civil societies have emerged to put more pressure on the president to resign. These groups include nongovernmental organizations (NGO), churches, trade unions and academic organizations. The

groups say it is now up to ordinary South Africans to 'reclaim a hardwon democracy'. Reports say that opposition parties will try every legal avenue to remove President Zuma from office.

n Students threaten to cause havoc

FORT HARE MAy FACE CENTENARY CRISIS BY BUNTU BARA Students at the University of Fort Hare matched in front of The University’s administration building at the Alice Campus this week in wake of the Fundza Lushaka Bursary Scheme problems. Students demanded the University Vice Chancellor Dr Mvuyo Tom and his management team address the issues on the bursary. Students Representative Council (SRC) member Mathokazi Thandikhaya made a point that centenary celebrations will not

continue if the university management do not come with solutions to the students problems. ” Let me make this very clear to everyone, if they do not bring solutions to our student’s problems there will be no celebrations here anymore. Management has been given one week to resolve the issues,” he said No one wanted to comment about what is going to happen next week if issues were not dealt with resolutions from the management. Some students had not yet been

provided with meal allowances, and the some final year students who have yet signed the loan agreement forms with (NSFAS) National Student Financial Aid. Students took forward the issue that the Fundza Lushaka Scheme is paying R82, 550 per student per year but the university is only passing on R75,000 to students because For Hare wants to cater for as many students as possible. However, this was done without consulting the (SRC) Students’ Representative Council. There are also issues with the new online financial aid

application called eLAf. Students also want the application disbanded, as they believe that it is not user-friendly. Thandikhaya said that the main issue still the NSFAS shortfall. University of Fort Hare Vice Chancellor Dr Tom said he has heard the cries of the students and he is going to put an eyes on the issues “Each and every student who is supposed to get money from Fundza Lushaka Scheme is going to get it”, he said.

Rural Communities Unite n Indibano project is expected to gain momentum BY EC REPORTERS Indibano, an Economic Development Implementation Organisation, is achieving significant results across the Eastern Cape by creating opportunities that enable underprivileged people to support and sustain themselves. Indibano’s collaborative efforts with The Kula Investment Group, Phambili Vuma Investments and PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) have initiated several agriculturallyfocused projects that promise to have a lasting impact in rural parts of the region. What sets them apart from the many similar projects doing good work is Indibano’s use of a three-fold partnership between the Community, Corporate role-players and Government. This model has proven well-suited to rural solutions that require long-term commitment, entrepreneurial

energy and meet a real market need. The ethos behind this rural self-help model is that: • If community members become aware of their problems and are given sufficient information on which to base their decisions (awareness); • Are allowed to plan and implement projects for themselves (action planning); • Are given the space to experiment to find the most appropriate solution (resourcefulness); • They will take responsibility for their situation (responsibility); and thereby gain confidence in their ability to solve their own problems (self-esteem). "Our main objective is to provide strategic planning and collaboration skills that will enable an effective delivery vehicle for wealth creation within rural communities.

Villagers working on a community garden as one of the ways of social development

This is underpinned by an entrepreneurial approach, which helps to ensure sustainable results, “explains Sibongile Tabata of Indibano. “Traditional leaders own stretches of undeveloped land, so we try to work with them for wealth creation, and the idea is to go for large –scale agricultural development projects and set up abattoirs, shearing and dairy facilities,” explains Lindiwe Hendricks,

founding member of Indibano. Since Indibano started operating, at least seven villages now have shearing sheds. Furthermore, there are currently another seven projects providing young people from the region with training in sheep shearing, corporate governance and skills development. Indibano expects to achieve the upgrade of 36 Operational Shearing Sheds, empowering

the youth with their own stock and full training for youth shearers and sorters, leading to 72 permanent job opportunities, 648 seasonal jobs and the production of quality wool for commercial trading by the youth cooperatives. A South African, if not a world first, and one that will hopefully encourage rural youth to remain in the woolproducing industry.

SENIOR CITIZEN GAMBLING RAISES CONCERNs n Seminar reveals startling facts n Spotlight on women’s issues

XHOSA LITERATURE WRITERS RECOGNISED BY VUYO LUDIDI Promoting isiXhosa language has been a much contentious issues for two local writers who are striving to preserve and encourage the development of isiXhosa especially amongst the youth. Authors Sinoyolo Nokhutywa and Yolisa Madolo have recently written a Xhosa play and novel respectively. The new literature deals with cultural practices and how they affect the women within those societies. Mr Nokhutywa unashamedly lays bare the on-going injustices against women in a country that touts itself as possessing the best constitutional democracy in the world. In his new book Lisiko xa kutheni’, the play delves into the sacred amaMpondo tradition of ukungena. Ukungena is a custom practiced by amaMpondo people wherein a widow is sometimes obligated to marry the closest relative of her deceased husband who will take care of the family to continue the bloodline. Ms Madolo’s book eloquently narrates a tale about the tragic consequences of a young girl succumbing to peer-

pressure and having to make a decision that could influence the rest of her life. “This is a story about social issues that are happening in and around us, especially in our black communities,” said Ms Madolo. Nokhutywa expresses concerns over people’s inability to control the rapid evolution of the custom and how the resultant detachment from the original concept. This has opened up space for greed, lust and rampant abuse of women’s rights. “The original custom was instilled so as to ensure that the woman and her family should her husband die, be taken care of, and who better to do that than those closest to the deceased, however, overtime, people have betrayed this central ethos, and now are driven by monetary gains. This to the detriment of women and their children,” he said. It took Nokhutywa, three months to complete the book, having first put pen to pad in March 2015 before concluding the manuscript in June later that year. “I decided to write in my own language because I feel it’s my duty so as to protect

and promote isiXhosa, especially amongst the youth. We as black people continue to lose ourselves because we can’t articulate and express ourselves in our own languages anymore. How then do we expect to pass on our heritage if we can’t even come to terms with the most important component of that heritage, language?” says Nokhutywa. Madolo also advocates for vernacular literature as a critical tool in effectively promoting African languages and rescuing the dignity of indigenous languages. “African literature written in African languages carries great potential to influence the imagination of the indigenous people and in so doing start the process of promoting indigenous language use. Through this, we’re optimistic that we can inspire a lot more people to start writing vernacular,” she said. She started writing the book in 2006 as a way to contribute to society after steadily observing a decline in the value system and a perturbing incline in the moral decay of society. politics@ectoday.co.za

BY VUYO LUDIDI More than 50 percent of pension grant recipients have admitted to gambling addiction, a study by the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board (ECGBB) has revealed in a seminar that was held at the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) last week. The study also revealed that The Buffalo City Metro (BCM) has the highest number of prevalence gamblers in the province followed by Port Elizabeth with 25 and 21 percent respectively. CEO of ECGBB Mabutho Zwane, urged gamblers to wise up when participating in gambling activities. “Gambling should be no different from going to the movies or buying any other service, the problem

starts when gambling takes over your life” In a research presentation by the Communications Manager at ECGBB Pumeza George she revealed that pensioners gamble because they want to make more money, which usually results in them more gambling if the gambler loses money. ”What is saddening is that some gamblers borrow money and when they lose that money they are compelled to borrow more just to win that money back place them in a trap that is hard to break out of” said Ms George The research went on to recommend that a campaign would have to be conducted to help pensioners to better manage their finances and get support if they have addiction problems. Gambling site owners will have to be more vigilant

in curbing gambling addiction. Senior citizens groups were also invited to participate in the seminar and share their viewpoints on the research. Mdantsane based senior citizens group, Imizamo Yethu Old Age Services, Secretary Pam Sondishe passed this comment. “We learnt from the seminar that gambling carries a certain stigma in our society which may make it hard for our contemporaries to open up about gambling addiction, we don’t judge people who gamble because circumstances differ for each person, but people adopt a different attitude towards gambling,” said Ms Sondishe. politics@ectoday.co.za

SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR D/VILLAGE STAKEHOLDERS Life will certainly change for the better for 45 stakeholders from Duncan Village after receiving certificates in different skills to help them develop their expertise.

One of the beneficiaries, Mantombi Maneli who is physically challenged runs a Day Care and Disability Centre said the training helped her a lot, “I have been lacking skills for the past six years after developing a passion of teaching little kids and having a desire to be actively involved in activities of people living with disabilities, I have 40 kids in my day care.” She told her story during the certificate handover on Wednesday 2 March at the Gompo Community Hall after completing their training in different skills for three weeks. “The training has helped me a lot after three weeks I now have communication skills and management skills. I will use my skills in my business and also share my skills with others,” she said. Another beneficiary Sithembele Antoni received three certificates from communications, project management and customer care skills. “We are currently running a catering company as a team called RTDM Services. I will use each and every skill I have gained in this programme for the business. It gives me great pleasure to receive these skills, we’ve been struggling for many years without skills in our business.” “It taught me how to treat and how to deal with customers,” he said. DVRI Programme Manager Momoeketsi Khetsi said, “The training follows a survey that was conducted on Duncan Village Quality of Life Survey in 2014, which found out that there was a low skills base and low business opportunities for the

community. The Metro then established the DVRI local stakeholders’ capacity building programme to provide training on the much needed skills on the labour market and SMME business sector.” “We received funding from the Department of Human Settlements for the project and stakeholders were trained in project management, basic customer care, communication and crop production. Further training will be offered on ICDL. She added that the initiative is an ongoing programme to give other stakeholders who are on the DVRI Stakeholder database a chance to also gain skills. Speaking about the project, Ward Councillor Mlandeli Mateke said the training was needed in the area. “We want people to do things for themselves but with minimum support. This initiative will certainly give people the skills that they need”. He further stated that the training is for cooperatives, NGOs and CBOs so that they can qualify and receive certificate on what they do in their organisations. “This will help them when they seek for tenders, jobs or any form of assistance which requires accredited certificates to prove their capacity.” The DVRI Stakeholder’s Forum consist of various clusters such as, business; health; faith based organisations; education and training; sports, youth, arts and culture; agriculture and social welfare,” she said. Each cluster is offered training based on their needs in the respective field of operation.

n Qhama Maswana shows his work

THE ONE MAN ART GALLERY SHOW BY ERIC GYIMAH

All pictures by Avukile Magaxeni

While most emerging artists work hard at getting their art on display. Artist Qhama Maswana is a 24-year-old Fine Art Graduate from King William’s Town actively participated in his dream as he filled the Arts On The lain pop up gallery with his work for a one-man show last Friday. The exhibition was held at Chamberlain Street in Berea on Friday 1 April. The pop up exhibition for arising artists and crafters debuts art collectables for homeowners, young professionals, and everyone looking for quality art at reasonable prices. A theme of strong African women captured my attention as each portrait had texture, colour and several layers. Qhama is often inspired to capture the beauty of women on canvas. He grew up in a household of female siblings who he described as gentle and filled with love. The passion for a career in the

arts began in his primary school years in Ginsberg where various art competitions instilled a sense of confidence in his work. “After winning a few art competitions I decided on the spot that I was going to be an extraordinary artist. What motivated me are challenges related to my field of choice, which made me more curious in learning more about art. “As we speak I run my painting and drawing studio from home. I am one curious artist who’s always eager to learn and know more about the lifestyle of others in different environments of the Eastern Cape communities,” says Qhama. Community members wandered around the gallery, which had over 20 different art pieces from the artist, with different textures, graphics and colour. The inspiration from the artwork varied throughout as each piece told a different story of his influence from the beauty that is the African continent and its people, other sketches included icons Qhama

looks up to who no longer with us. “I try with every finished work to breathe life into a long forgotten culture, so that its design, ideas, innovations and lifestyle are displayed on canvas. The challenge as with any recreated moment is to not caricature the moment and instead capture it with all its former glory. My artwork speaks not only for me but also for people who were long gone silenced. “I believe it’s important to live life to the fullest and enjoy every moment in order to paint it accurately as you experience it. I paint only when I’m inspired and i work hard at being inspired every day,” concluded Qhama. Arts on the Lain has its eyes set on scouting more talented artists from the province for future pop up art shows. If you want to know or see more about Qhama’s work, directly send him an email on qmaswana@gmail. com Reporter1@ectoday.co.za

EL TO HOST WOMEN TERTIARY GAMES Women Tertiary Games are a culmination of Higher Institutions into Provincial Games, played by both Universities and TVET Colleges around the Eastern Cape Province. The programme has three participating codes namely netball,

soccer and rugby and are played twice in a year, April (First leg) and August (Second leg). The first leg will take place on Saturday 16 April. At the Jan Smuts Stadium in East London. Eastern Cape is the second

largest province in South Africa dominated mostly by rural areas, unfortunately described as a province with high levels of under development, inadequate sport facilities and infrastructure, poverty and unemployment

but has amazingly succeeded in moulding successful sports people. Women have always been much of a debate when it comes to their participation in sport. It is either they not given enough attention or are stigmatised.

in the world. Ms Madolo’s book eloquently narrates aa tale about the tragic consequences of a young girl succumbing to peer-pressure and having to make a decision that could influence the rest of her life. “This is a story about social issues that are happening in and around us, especially in our black communities,” said Ms Madolo. Nokhutywa expresses concerns over people’s inability to control the rapid evolution of the custom and how the resultant detachment from the original concept. This has

opened up space for greed, lust and rampant abuse of women’s rights. “I decided to write in my own language because I feel it’s my duty so as to protect and promote isiXhosa, especially amongst the youth.

EARLY BIRD CALL FOR LEGENDS BY DEREK HINDMAN

CHANGE IS GOOD Legends Marathon organisers and race Chairperson Mr Luthando Bara announced changes for this year’s event at a race day launch recently. Picture by Celize Kriel

It was announced at the official Legends Marathon launch, which was held at the Philip Kahts Stadium in East London last week, that the fourth running of the hugely popular annual event will take place on Saturday 1 October. Those “early bird” runners interested in registering over the next few months for the 21.1 Half Marathon and 68km Ultra Marathon will enjoy race entry fee discounts. Race founder member and Legends Chairperson Mr Luthando Bara, also took the opportunity to announce other important changes to the traditional Legends Marathon race

day format. “With the advent of the For Hare University centenary celebrations this year we at Legends Marathon have decided to partner with them for the event. It is only right that we do so to acknowledge this historic milestone. “Since the last Legends Marathon event, road runners have consistently expressed the opinion that the a 10km race also be added to the programme in addition to t 68km Ultra Marathon and 21,1km Half Marathon events. I share that view so the first 10km race will take place this year,” Mr Bara said. The race will carry prize money of R40 000. The race routes will also change this year as both the Half

Marathon and Ultra Marathon will finish at the Philip Kahts in East London instead of the Jan Smuts Stadium. Because more runners have entered the Ultra Marathon, each year safety concerns have forced race organisers to change the race route from the Mount Coke road to the N2 after the start in Bhisho. Other partners for occasion will be Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board, EC Department of Recreation, Arts and Culture, Coca Cola, Daily Dispatch, RAF, NTT VW and Galaxy Bingo. Starting on Friday 30 September a sports expro will also be held at the Philip Kahtz Stadium and the popular 5km fun run will take place.

Race entry fees have been set as follows; Early Bird Fee if you enter between April and June: Ultra Marathon R180: Half Marathon R70 Early Bird fee from July to August: Ultra Marathon R220: Half Marathon R90 There are no discounts for R10km (R60) and fun run (R40) Those registering in September will pay R250 (ultra) and R110 for half marathon. Runners are encouraged to register on line using addresses legendsmarathon. co.za or info@legends marathon. co.za. Entry forms will also be available at local sports shops.
