Dear Burke Community, In the final year of our Stand with Burke Campaign, I want to thank you for your ongoing support of Edmund Burke School. I am thrilled to report that we have raised more than $5 million towards our $6 million goal.

Of course, your participation in the Campaign will advance critical renovations to our campus, support our dynamic faculty and staff, and bolster our already-generous financial aid program. Yet it represents even more than that.

This issue of 1968 Magazine draws upon a key phrase in our mission: “skilled and independent thinkers.” We considered, how does one cultivate independence? What does it mean (and what does it require) to think, work, and act independently? Here at Burke, we are always asking such questions and our students are always developing their own creative and complex answers.

50 More Years: Let’s Go! Our 2019-20 school year launched with signature Burke energy and verve: welcoming new and returning students, celebrating Alumni Weekend, venturing across Maryland (and up to New York) for community-building trips, starting to explore the museums and sites here in DC, and finally enjoying a raucous Pep Rally, followed by Homecoming at the brand-new Fields at RFK. We also were energized by the news about the Stand with Burke Campaign. With less than one year to go, we have raised $5M of our $6M goal. Thanks to you, who have stood with us and who are standing up today, we will reach that ambitious mark by Summer 2020. //

On the edge of Shenandoah National Park, east of the Blue Ridge

Mountains, sits the campsite where Stacy Smith experienced her first leadership retreat. She was a teenager at the time and likely could not have predicted that she would return, not long after, as a Burke faculty member ̶ co-leading Burke’s new student leadership program in 1999.

Twenty years ago, an intrepid group of Burke high school students, along with two ambitious 8th graders and four teachers (Stacy, the Dean of Students, the Community Programs Director, and a Physics faculty member), embarked for Madison, Virginia.

Their goal was to create a community of leaders in the building, who would be strong club leaders and team captains, who could take charge of events and meetings, and who knew how to reflect and look inward. As an exercise, Stacy divided them into three groups and challenged them to design an all-school event that celebrated Burke.

Two of the three groups proposed the event now known as Founders Day. Both Founders Day and the leadership retreats stuck. In the following years, Burke students could choose among two retreats: one in the fall and one in the spring, with the latter themed around a project. One year, while Burke’s Board of Trustees was in the midst of strategic planning, retreat participants divided into subgroups that reflected the Board committees and designed their own strategic plan ̶ which they then presented to the Trustees upon their return.

In 2008, Burke’s student leaders were challenged to reinvent Founders Day, leading to the fierce (yet friendly) competitive structure of today. More vitally, in Stacy’s words, the students proved “they could run the show, from start to finish.” Catalyzed by their success, the facilitators program came to be. Today, that program trains juniors and seniors to facilitate leadership trainings and retreats themselves, passing on their learning and experience to the next crop of leaders while they are still students.

Involved since her sophomore year, Alexandra (Allie) Boback ‘08 calls the leadership program her “most defining” experience at Burke. Beyond oncampus training in public speaking and effective meetings, “the retreats gave me room to think about my role in society and how I could impact it in ways that were different than what you learn about in the classroom.” (Allie returned as an alum facilitator last year and noted that, as a working adult, a refresher on those hard and soft skills still comes in handy.)

In 2019-20, Leadership Development now infuses Burke’s full curriculum.

All students take part in leadership training (with the option to do more and lead more as they progress). In 9th grade, students run an “Empty Bowls” fundraiser in conjunction with their study of food justice here in Washington, DC, with mentorship from 11th and 12th graders. In 10th Grade, students engage in a winter retreat about how to tell a powerful story, partnering with NPR’s StoryCorps and learning to connect with local changemakers.

For spring 2020, twenty 11th and 12th graders will take the helm on Founders Day, following the new model from 2019: a morning of seminars on social change topics, followed by afternoon performances, picnic in Howard Field, and more than one epic relay race.

Reflecting on twenty years of leadership training, Stacy remarks that the perpetual challenge is to keep the education relevant to students’ lived experience and, in our current climate, to address the hundreds of channels through which we all communicate. She always reminds students to consider both the group they are leading and the message they are imparting and to bear in mind the aphorism, “know thyself.”

In Allie’s words, “Many people have personal growth in college, but I had it at Burke. So when I got to college, I knew who I was.” //

What does it mean to be an “independent thinker?”

RL: It means having the ability to take all the evidence presented to you, be those lessons from a teacher or information from resources, and then come up with your own opinions, to synthesize and draw your own conclusions ̶ regardless of what the teacher says.

As a teacher, I try my best to take myself out of it. If I have a personal reaction to a subject, first I recognize it and then I put it aside, not bringing it out unless it’s absolutely necessary. It teaches the students to dig a little deeper as well.

How do you, as a Grade Dean, see 9th graders contend with independence?

RL: Independence is controlled in 9th grade because the schedule is so packed. We give them choice, but we also keep those choices limited: when do I take computer science, do I play a sport and which one, how should I use my free period?

We may suggest that students study during that free period ̶ but we step back and don’t check on them continually. We leave space open for mistakes.

We hope to see independence materialize inside and outside the classroom: progressing from basic to advanced time management skills to being more critical in their thinking. In the fall, you can walk through the Commons and know right away who is new and isn’t. But by the end of the year, you can’t. The groups become so interspersed because students have developed so much common experience.

How do you cultivate these skills in the classroom?

RL: In 10th grade, for example, our first unit works with a lot of primary source documents ̶ which are a common feature of our History curriculum in general. We read and discuss articles that reflect multiple sides of an argument. We do a current events project where all my classes find articles on their own and then unpack them together, and we ask them to seek out and point out the biases. Beyond the classroom, we are a unique school in that we have an open campus.

Before coming to Burke, I had never seen kids have so much free time ̶ and learning to manage that time is its own master class in cultivating independence.

Do you think it’s hard to teach independence?

RL: Not as much with a class of 9th graders ̶ they want to be independent. You start to teach them how to ride a bike and they will take the bike from you, immediately fall, then ask for feedback. It’s about being there to catch them when they fall. //

Independent Study Snapshot Burke’s Independent Study option enables students to pursue interests and explore passions beyond our classrooms. This year, students are delving into Chinese and Japanese language, Advanced Drawing & Painting and 2-D Art, computer science projects, and music theory.

For the last two years, 11th grader Julia has been fulfilling her World Languages requirement through an independent study in American Sign Language (ASL). From Burke’s computer lab, she logs on to the ASL Virtual Academy, based in Ohio, and signs with a classmate in Kansas. She engages in assessments with faculty and in peer review, all that you would expect from a language class ̶ but with her own management and motivation.

For Julia, the beauty of ASL is the depth and the story behind each sign. The challenges come from the word order and the structure, which are wholly different from spoken English. While independent study can be an inherently solitary experience, ASL has helped her connect with people beyond Burke ̶ and she has taught her friends here some basic signs.

Looking forward, Julia hopes to go into special education, working with students who have severe physical needs and require early intervention, and deeply studying how people communicate. //

SENIOR PROJECT SNAPSHOTS Among Burke’s 12th grade experiences, the Senior Project stands out. For two weeks in May, seniors have full control of their time, their work, and their creative energies ̶ and when they return, the entire Burke community can experience the results.

Here are just a few projects from the Class of 2019, reflecting a broad range of passions and a deep engagement in the local community.

Jack Davis ‘19 interned at Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders (SMYAL), which supports and empowers LGBTQ youth in the DC region. During his two weeks in the office, Jack drafted outlines for future workshops, assisted with publicity for events, and helped youth feel at home through games and activities.

Annette Lopez-Padilla '19 interned at Real Life Style, an upand-coming style consulting company focused on the DC and New York markets. From department stores to shoe stores to the company office, Annette documented her experience on her blog and created content for Real Life Style’s website.

Eleni Retta '19 got an early start to her project, originally volunteering with the Women’s Center in Vienna, Virginia, during their Leadership Conference in April, where she helped welcome 600 attendees. During her project, she joined a team of five volunteers, shadowing at workshops, representing the Center at a festival, and providing referrals to women in need.

Ezra Martin-Rosenthal ‘19 perhaps epitomized the independence of Senior Projects when he set out on a solo hike of the Appalachian Trail. He began at the Petites Gap trailhead in Virginia, crossed the James River Foot Bridge, stopped at Skyland Amphitheatre, and ended in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia ̶ capturing some beautiful scenery along the way.

Vera Walsh-Alker ‘19 shadowed in the maternal health department of MedStar Washington Hospital Center in DC – observing nurse midwives in Labor and Delivery, as well as outpatient and inpatient OB/GYN care, and keeping an in-depth record of what she learned about prenatal and postpartum health, including learning to feel for a baby’s position in the womb. //

On Tru t h and S ke p t i c i sm an interview with Eric Geller ‘10

Eric first walked through Burke’s doors as a 10th grader and took the helm of The Cageliner (as coeditor) in his senior year. Since those days, he has earned his BA in Political Science from Kenyon College, progressed from an intern to a political reporter at the Daily Dot in just two years, and joined Politico as a cybersecurity reporter in 2016. Today, he lives just down the street from Burke in Dupont Circle, and his beat covers the White House and the Departments of State, Justice, and Commerce.

Tell us about your undergraduate years.

EG: I was a political science major and a staff writer for Kenyon’s Collegian newspaper, writing on political issues ̶ that became my “unofficial concentration.” If you want to be a journalist, you should take advantage of your school’s resources. There’s nothing like honing the skills to develop a story, to write and edit, to find sources that will tell you what they think. Do it when the stakes are different.

Focus on developing practical skills in an accommodating environment.

You went straight from college to political journalism. How did that come to pass?

EG: An editor at the Daily Dot was a Kenyon graduate and found me on Twitter! He brought me on as an intern with the politics team, which was just beginning to explore how Congress might touch technology: net neutrality, community broadband encryption, tech as a form of statecraft. It was 2014, this conversation was just beginning, and I was on the ground floor. This lucky break turned into a multi-year job and ultimately led me to Politico.

You have been at Politico for 3.5 years now. What are the highlights?

EG: When I got the job, the cybersecurity team was debuting. At the time, this was still an an esoteric issue, a wonky issue, so they were looking at how lawmakers might grapple with it. On my first day in June 2016, the DNC email hack was announced and we realized that campaigns, and governments, were not prepared to deal with being attacked in this way. No one was. And we had no blueprint for covering it. But today, election security is an abiding topic. This past August, we launched a tracker that shows every county in the United States that still uses paperless voting machines (which could be hacked without detection).

We all want the democracy to work well. We all want to trust the process. But cybersecurity is now the backdrop to that process. We are all connecting to the internet in ways we never thought we would ̶ and I’m helping people feel more knowledgeable about what is going on. This is not a “weird issue for the wonks” anymore. This can be a big, passion issue for people, and they actually can wrap their heads around it.

What are some challenges facing the journalism field, especially in today’s political climate?

EG: Questioning journalists’ objectivity is not new; however, we are living in a time when there are so many outlets and not all are practicing responsible journalism. Even the responsible ones have to deal with a loss of trust. Cynical political actors perhaps drove that loss, but now journalists have to solve it. We will be an endangered species otherwise.

In an ideal world, there wouldn’t be a debate about climate change, for example; people would trust the news stories because they trusted the reporters. But when you don’t trust the people who convey the information anymore, it causes this fragmentation of reality and this breakdown of accepted wisdom.

I don’t necessarily see the light at the end of the tunnel yet.

When you have dealt up close and personal with the forces of cynicism, it’s hard to know what to do. There are individuals out there whose livelihoods come from eroding the truth ̶ and they do have the right to spread false information. We don’t want to draw lines about who can and can’t say something.

Circling back to our theme, has journalism become less independent?

EG: There has been the splintering of the journalism sector. That said, organizations that produce unbiased news are still doing the same thing and you can still fact-check them ̶ they’re not really drifting. You just have so many other places to go now, so the fact-based organizations don’t have that dominant hold. You could easily be drawing your news from a website that was built to cater to your opinions.

So how can we critically assess our news?

EG: When you are writing a paper for a class and you have a footnote, you are citing a respected expert ̶ and you can do the same when you read the news. If you see that A is the cause of B, look at who they are citing. Journalists won’t say that on their own authority. They are going to cite, say, a government agency or some specialized entity. Look for that. And then do some research about those entities. Dig around and see if they are funded by an industry group that has a vested interest in a specific outcome. Amidst a proliferation of “not-real experts,” understanding who the journalists are citing is one of the most important things a news-consumer can do.

Can media literacy be taught?

EG: People make their living taking advantage of those looking for truth. Skepticism is a good thing to learn. We want students to be skeptical and not credulous. If you grow up believing things that aren’t true, you won’t engage with society in a productive and wholesome way ̶ so the stakes could not be higher for media literacy. It’s not something that needs to be restricted to journalism and political science either, you need to be skeptical and cross-reference in any subject.

As a student, engaging in your courses and in the news is like voting. If you wait for others to take care of it, you may get an outcome you won’t like. there are no take-backs in public life, so you have to stay engaged. You don’t want to wake up to a world you don’t recognize. We are all connected to the society around us and truly must build our awareness of it. //

an interview with Megan Wheeler ‘05

Megan joined Burke as a new 9th grader in Fall 2001. She earned her Communications degree from Boston College in 2009 before moving to New York. Since getting her start in NBC’s Page Program, she has worked steadily across the media landscape, from independent projects to large commercial shoots. Today, Megan is an Emmy-nominated producer for NBC’s News Digital ̶ exemplifying Burke’s commitment to forging new avenues and crafting positive, creative contributions to the world.

Tell us about a little bit about your Burke background.

MW: With a larger class than I had ever experienced, coming from Capitol Hill Day School, along with the open campus and freedom at Burke, I remember thinking, “What? This is what high school can be?” I was ready to excel and find “my thing.”

Looking back, we did not have the traditional high school trappings: the lunchroom, the football team. But what Burke gave me was the freedom to find out how to express myself. I had the freedom to figure out who Megan was and what she wanted to be.

With its thousands of students, Boston College could be an overwhelming place.

But I felt like I already had adjusted before I arrived. College wasn’t scary to me because, at Burke, I already had experienced that freedom to try. You always could just try something.

Tell us about your path from BC to NBC. MW: My friends always knew that I would work in entertainment or television. After college, I took the leap and moved to New York, initially living with a Burke classmate in Trenton and working at a shoe store ̶ and that is where I met an anchor from the Today Show. I saw her again six months later and, one week after that, had an interview with NBC’s Page Program. From there, I went to Rock Center with Brian Williams; and after that show was canceled, I moved around the news and entertainment industry. I worked at a production company out of ABC studios, small production houses, and Huffington Post’s digital program. I later returned to NBC as a researcher with the Weekend TODAY show and, during my three years with the program, helped to launch Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist. Live TV is grueling and, after a stint with Megyn Kelly TODAY, I left to start with TODAY.com Original Video unit. Then in July 2019, I was nominated for an Emmy!

It’s important to remember: this is the CliffsNotes version of a much longer story, jumping past the trials and tribulations. It’s a difficult business, but I feel like everything I have done, including my education, has only led me to where I am now.

“A New Dawn” received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Arts, Culture, or Entertainment Report this summer. How did it come into being?

MW: The piece centers on Dee Nguyen, a father and a chef in Laguna Hills, California. His young son (Berlin) went in for a routine medical procedure and the anesthesiologist made a mistake, causing Berlin to lose oxygen for fifteen minutes, leaving him with a brain injury that rendered him a quadriplegic with significant cognitive impairment. Dee quit his job at the Ritz Carleton and then opened his own restaurant ̶ with breakfast and lunch only, so that he could spend the afternoons with his son. Originally, I was assigned to the story from Today Show Parents and didn’t because I had lost my own father just two years earlier. But in the end, the piece became a love letter to him as well.

What should we all consider when navigating the media landscape?

MW: Honestly, there’s a lot of noise, a lot of people who seek attention. For many years, my life was tethered to the news. I had to learn to unplug and reconnect with myself, to put down Instagram and put down Twitter. Remember: that content is curated. It’s not real. But a conversation with someone else ̶ that is. At the core of my pieces now, I try to bring back humanity.

Today, we are often quick to silence and disregard people. But Burke taught me that, while my point of view is important, so is the next person’s. I don’t have to agree, but I should listen. It can inform my going about in the world. I wish that we would not lose that grace and humility. I only can choose to ask, “What else can I learn today?”

Do you have any advice for aspiring media students?

MW: Talk to everyone. I tried to find mentors in the business ̶ anyone who would talk to me about what they had done. Don’t ask for a job. Ask them what they do and how they got there.

Once you know their story, they are way more open to talking to you. Don’t go in thinking about what you can get, but what you can learn.

And don’t be hard on yourself. Don’t be concerned with what others are doing. What they are presenting may not be what happened. I, too, suffer from feeling like I am not adequate. You bring something valuable to the table, and don’t let anyone shake that notion from you.

Finally, media is changing. Be open to everything in the landscape.

How about any final words for Burke’s senior class?

MW: Enjoy senior year! I had no bills, I had all my friends ̶ you are not going to get that time back. Burke is a very special place, and the people there are very special. It’s okay to be different.

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2019 Alumni from 1969 all the way through 2019 returned to Burke on September 6th and 7th for Alumni Weekend and Reunion festivities. Our thanks to all who were able to join in the fun, and happy reunion year to those classes ending in 4s and 9s! On Friday evening, alumni and their families joined current Burke families for a picnic at Peirce Mill to kick off the school year and the weekend, and Saturday night brought a terrific rooftop cocktail party with beautiful weather ̶ with delicious catering by fellow Burke alum Oliver Friendly ‘99 and his catering company, Eat & Smile. We hope we’ll see you at Alumni Weekend next fall. Remember, all alumni are welcome!

1970s

Chris Dutro ‘73 is retiring after a 25-year teaching career, which he owes, in large part, to Burke’s founders, Dick and Jean. Joanne, his wife of 37 years, is an acclaimed art teacher in Connecticut; their two children, Erin and Kevin, are an artist and guitarist, respectively. Chris has served the education profession as a National Education Association delegate, Connecticut Education Association delegate, legislative commissioner, and member of the Resolutions Committee.

He is most proud of helping write and pass the 2019 Act Concerning Student Data Privacy. He is now looking forward to outsmarting trout into taking his fly and, of course, playing more golf with his unwitting mentor, Mr. Richard Roth. (Jean too, if he is willing.)

Jimmy Pelletier ‘91 founded the DC Wheels charity organization and skateboard team back in 2007. DC Wheels’ mission is to overcome long-standing stereotypes that surround skateboarding by helping others, reinforcing positivity, and supporting a healthy lifestyle.

Coya Paz Brownrigg ‘93 co-authored Ensemble-Made Chicago: A Guide to Devised Theater, now available from Northwestern University Press.

Nick Freshman ‘94 is Founder & Managing Member at Mothersauce Partners, which supports up-and-coming food and drink entrepreneurs through venture capital and advising.

Mothersauce’s portfolio includes The Renegade, which will be opening in Clarendon in fall 2019.

Lisa Hay ‘81 was recently reappointed to a second four-year term as Federal Public Defender for the District of Oregon. After 20 years as a public defender, she still loves her work, because there is always a new battle to fight to protect civil liberties.

You may have heard Lisa on NPR’s Morning Edition last year, discussing her office’s lawsuits challenging the confinement of immigration detainees in federal prisons.

Khalilah Sims McCants ‘94 smartly outfitted her children in Burke gear. Meet Chloë (9), Maddox (5), and Alex Jr. (11).

Nick Kolakowski’s ‘99 new novel, Maxine Unleashes Doomsday (Down & Out Books), came out on November 4.

Harrison Godfrey ‘02 and his wife Natalie welcomed baby boy Marlow – congratulations!

Adam Toolanen ‘09 is working as a helicopter pilot in Northern Sweden. He spent the summer in the Northwest Passage and Northern Greenland coast aboard Swedish icebreaker Oden as a ship pilot for National Science Foundation and the Swedish equivalent Arctic Research Program.

Danon Walton ‘09 welcomed baby Ryan into the world on October 13, 2019, a day after the baby shower! He was born at 34 weeks and stayed in the NICU for a week. He is now home and healthy.

Joanna Pumple ‘03 married Joshua Rouch in November! There to celebrate were fellow ‘03-ers Ben Brokaw, David Marx, Matt Plocher, Jessica Rice, Evan Samuels, and David Strarrels, plus Gabriel Pumple ‘99, past faculty member Pam Herath, and current faculty member Stacy Smith.

Ben Leubsdorf ‘04 his wife Kate welcomed their first child, Esther, in October 2018. Ben is studying library and information science at the University of Maryland.

Thea Krulwich ‘05 and Trey were married in July 2017, and baby Audre was born in February 2019. She’s a delight: funny, curious, rambunctious, perfect.

The family lives in Brooklyn where Thea has been working as a forensic social worker for the last seven years – and has recently moved to a new job in an elementary school.

Allie Bobak ‘08 is the Constituent Services Coordinator for DC Ward 1’s councilmember. Before joining the DC Council, she served as a Community Mobilizer at the Latin American Youth Center, along with several fellow Burke alums.

2010s

Teo Collins ‘14 graduated from the University of Chicago in 2018 with a degree in Applied Mathematics and started to work on making DSL for scientific visualization work with finite element data. In 2018, he was runner up for Best Paper at the 2018 FEniCS conference. His paper, “Point Movement in a DSL for Higher-Order FEM Visualization,” has since been accepted to IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, a top-tier journal and conference. He is applying to graduate school in applied math and computer science programs, focusing on numerical analysis, scientific computing, compilers, and programming languages research.

Maggie Eckerson ‘14 began her Peace Corps service as a Rural Health Educator in Belize this July. She is stationed deep in the rainforest in the Q’eqchi Maya Village of Dolores, working primarily alongside teachers in the local school to provide increased access to physical education and facilitating genderequitable clubs for youth to lead healthy and empowered lives. As a photographer, she is using this experience as an opportunity to document the relations between environmental justice and racial disparity. Ben Hartheimer ‘15 graduated from Colby College and began working for the Carlyle Group in DC. Between those two milestones, he embarked on a two-week journey through the Midwest to visit seven different baseball stadiums, stopping in Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Cincinnati for baseball games and visiting Madison, Wisconsin and Louisville, Kentucky for non-baseball related activities. Ben has now been to sixteen MLB stadiums and hope to get to all 30 soon!

Julia Hiemstra ‘15 graduated from the University of Vermont this past May and moved to the Dominican Republic to volunteer with the Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, based out of Ottawa, Canada. She is teaching English in elementary and high schools, while also tutoring children who need extra help and coaching a baseball team for young children. She reports, “I feel as though my life already has been enriched by the people that I have met and the experiences I have had.”

Alex Mountfield ‘18 connected with Eileen Lyons (past Visual Arts faculty) and spent the day at Trinity College, where Alex is currently a student, and at the National Gallery of Art in Dublin, Ireland.

ALUMNI ON CAMPUS In early October, Dillon Markey '98 returned to campus to provide a workshop on his wire sculpture techniques for Lucinda's sculpture class. As a stop motion animator, director, and inventor, based in Los Angeles, Dillon is known for his work on Robot Chicken, and with the animation artist PES, with whom he co-animated the Oscar-nominated Fresh Guacamole. Dillon also was a contributor to Burke's Alumni Art Show, for which he created wire portraits of Burke's founders, Dick Roth and Jean Mooskin, now on permanent display on campus in the Commons.

Dear Burke Community, I am pleased to present the 2018-19 Annual Report, a testament to the excitement of Burke’s 50th year as well as a celebration of the generosity of so many families, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends that has sustained our school for its first half century. Every donation listed is essential to ensuring that Burke can continue to provide an exceptional educational experience for current and future generations of students.

During this special anniversary year, it was a privilege to hear stories from so many members of the greater Burke family about our beloved school. As we continue to look ahead to Burke’s next 50 years and beyond, I am reminded of one such testimony and a bold act of generosity that truly set the stage for giving to Burke, and evolved into our first-ever Annual Fund campaign back in the mid-’80s. Diana and Stephen Goldberg believed so fiercely in the power of this institution, that they challenged the school community to raise funds to support Burke by pledging a matching gift. The community - with the Goldbergs’ match rallied to collectively raise over $60,000. With roots in this very first organized effort, Burke’s culture of philanthropy continues to grow tremendously.

Now, over 30 years later, we stand on the precipice of reaching an historic $6 million Stand with Burke Campaign goal. Under the leadership of Campaign Co-Chairs Sydney Bath P’18, Sharon Davis P’19, and Meredith Jason P’18 and Development Committee Co-Chair Wendy Cividanes P ‘21, over $5 million has already been raised toward this goal, and still the momentum grows! We excitedly anticipate crossing the finish line by raising the final $1 million as we ask the entire community to stand with Burke during this final Campaign year.

I would like to recognize two groups of individuals whose commitments to Burke are truly exceptional in many ways. Our Heritage Donors have been giving generously and faithfully to Burke for several years, some for over 35 years. Additionally, you’ll find a list of our Stand with Burke Campaign donors to date. Each of these individuals has made a bold pledge to stand up for what Burke stands for, and to ensure the success of this transformative fundraising effort. Thank you!

May 2017 On the heels of a positive feasibility study, the Board unanimously voted to launch the “quiet phase” of the then-named Campaign for Burke at 50.

June 2018 Following a year of quiet fundraising, with Board contributions

totalling more $2M, the Board voted unanimously to reaffirm our $6M goal and move forward with the public phase of the Campaign in September.

September 2018 With $3.3M in pledges and 100% board, faculty, and

staff participation, Burke publicly launched the Campaign (now dubbed Stand with Burke) – and held the first celebration of Burke’s 50th Anniversary at a festive block party with over 500 students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni.

April 2019 In a spirited celebration, featuring Dick, Jean, David, and many others, the 50th Anniversary Gala at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium exceeded all expectations. With nearly 700 guests present, the passion of Burke’s community for our mission resulted in more than $500,000 raised.

The Facilities Committee of the board is hard at work determining how to repurpose the first floor of Mooskin-Roth Hall and to provide new community space, new flexible classroom spaces, a fitness center, new locker rooms, enhanced outdoor space, and improved accessibility.

On Saturday, April 13, 2019, nearly 700 members of the Burke community gathered in Washington, DC at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary. The success of this event exceeded all expectations, and the passion of this community for Burke’s mission could not be contained.

Through combined fundraising efforts for the Gala and Burke’s Online Auction for Financial Aid, nearly $500,000 was raised in total. Thank you to all who attended and supported this special event!
