Burke's Bridge to the Future— explore our strategic plan

Steve’s Study

The political tumult and social upheaval of 1968 inspired our founders, Dick Roth and Jean Mooskin, to take the bold step of starting a school. I continue to draw inspiration from their boldness as we grapple with the challenges, both domestic and global, of our present moment— and strengthen the democratic, egalitarian, and participatory culture at Burke. To this day, when I sit down with a new Burke family, I often hear them describe the kind of learning community Dick and Jean imagined could be possible, demonstrating how that vision is alive and well today.

After a year of think tanks, focus groups, design days, hundreds of interviews with community members, and the hard work of the Strategic Planning Task Force, we have released “Bold and Balanced: Burke’s Bridge to the Future” to the community and begun to bring it to life.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Over the next 3–5 years, we will sharpen our progressive academic program, one that is challenging, experiential, and rooted in civic engagement. Our faculty and staff have long been Burke’s greatest asset and this plan will guide us in providing the support and professional development that they need to sustain their challenging, but fulfilling, work in the classroom. Our students lead busy and complex lives as well, and this plan invites us to develop spaces, routines, and practices that will help them achieve greater balance Finally, the school must continue to evolve and adapt to meet the financial and sustainability challenges of an urban school in Washington, DC.

While we envision Burke’s future, we also draw comfort and strength from the familiar rituals and traditions of the past 56 years. A new community comes together each fall with the arrival of more

than 60 new students from more than 50 zip codes. The class bonding trips, a well-established Burke experience, give students and advisors the opportunity to get away from campus, strengthen friendships, and forge new ones. Assemblies, led by our student government co-presidents, feature band performances, pep rallies, and the occasional competitive game (musical chairs, obscure trivia, and digits of Pi recitation are staples). We can rally around these shared rituals, which remind us that we are part of something beyond ourselves.

Dick and Jean started with a school of 17 students in 1968. While we have grown to 300 students nowadays, academic vigor, commitment to social justice, and spirit of fun and playfulness remain the ingredients that make Burke special today.

In this issue of 1968 Magazine, we are focusing on “boldness,” made manifest in Burke’s rich visual arts program, in the work crafted by our community, and (of course) in the name of our Strategic Plan. In our 2023/24 Annual Report, we recognize all those who have contributed to Burke’s bold vision and mission. We are profoundly grateful for your philanthropy, which ensures that our community will continue to create, innovate, and be bold from our corner on Upton Street.

In peace and partnership, Steve McManus, Head of School

Forming Bonds

From September 19–20, 6th-11th graders at Burke traveled around and beyond the DC region, enjoying quality time with classmates and advisors during our annual Community Building trips. Middle schoolers, who all have overnight trips coming up this winter and spring, spent a day lakeside in Edgewater, MD, followed by an active day at The St. James for 6th–7th grade and a hike on the Billy Goat Trail for the 8th grade. Our newest high schoolers spent the night at Camp Letts, while the 10th grade headed to Calleva, for outdoor challenges and ropes courses. 11th grade enjoyed their traditional New York City venture, where they explored the city's historic landmarks and food.

Bengals Abroad

This past June, our advanced Spanish students traveled to Peru, where they stayed in Calca in southern Peru, followed by the Urubamba River Valley and the Peruvian Andes. They volunteered at a local school, hiked in Machu Picchu, visited several archaeological sites, and built language skills through homestays. Students also traveled to a remote village, where they worked in construction, painting, and harvesting—including shucking corn and quinoa and picking fava beans for cooking and planting. After, the group shared in an Indigenous Thanksgiving ceremony and meal with their hosts.

But what stood out most were the people. In their small grade, connections were “fast and strong,” including a longtime friendship with Matison Hearn-Desautels ’14 (who returned to Burke as an English faculty member from 2021–2024).

Following graduation, Hannah attended Bryn Mawr College before earning her bachelor’s from Hunter College in New York City. In 2018, she returned to DC and began reconnecting with family and friends— including one who ran a stained glass restoration studio.

Daniel Wolkoff first trained in glass restoration in the mid-1970s, before founding his own DC studio (Adams Morgan Stained Glass) in 1989. Since then, “the studio has designed original commissions [and] restored hundreds of antique stained glass and historic wood windows, skylights and lamps.” Daniel had just begun teaching Hannah the basics of glass cutting when the pandemic struck.

In the uncertainty and isolation of early Covid, the two built a friendship alongside their studio relationship. They formed a pod together and Hannah managed the groceries and essentials, while Daniel taught her the techniques specific to leaded glass—which can be applied

to the Victorian architecture and signature transoms that populate the District.

Stained glass refers to the color and the paint, while the geometric design comes from shaping “lead came.” Restoration artisans preserve the glass as much as possible, while rebuilding the metal matrix by hand.

As Hannah explains, “there are only a handful of studios in the area, and fewer that involve antique restoration.” In short, the only way to learn leaded glass technique is from one of a few living craftspeople.

From the artistic pod, Hannah found she could manage most restoration projects within six to twelve months of training. She worked full-time for Daniel’s studio until 2023, both learning the craft and the people skills needed for restoration. When you take apart and restore a window in someone’s home, an “unexpected intimacy” often develops, she points out. Homeowners often want to be involved in each step.

“I’m hyper aware that I’ve temporarily stolen the light from their home,” Hannah says, conjuring up a boarded-over window frame, its colorful glass now displaced, spread out across a studio table. You may restore a stained glass

window once in a lifetime, given that windows often last for 80–90 years. “This is really special work.”

In late 2023, Hannah began building her own business, Capitol Hill Stained Glass, through word of mouth, listservs, and personal connections. She recently worked with the Craftsman Group in Brentwood to restore the stained glass in the Folger Shakespeare Library’s Founders’ Room, where windows depict Hamlet considering Yorick’s skull and Romeo strumming a lute.

Hannah also returned to her roots on H Street NE, now working from a studio that she shares with her stepmother (a past Smithsonian employee) in the alley between 8th and 7th. While much has changed since Shakspeare’s day, the leaded glass process has abided. For residential

projects, Hannah only needs a table and hand tools— electricity is just a bonus.

“There’s a tediousness to it that I really like,” Hannah says. “I like the tactile, the tangible. There’s ten to eleven steps that take 1–3 days each, so you’re moving through a repetitive process with a really satisfying before and after. You start with something crumbling and oxidized, and then infuse the original artisan’s work into it.”

From the halls of Burke to the windows of the Folger, Hannah concedes that she’s not sure how she got here, “but I am a firm believer in learning with hands.” From Burke, she formed a belief in tactile learning, the core of being an artisan, and a willingness to explore and constantly iterate over time. We can never say for certain when a window may open.

Filling the Canvas

“A blank page or canvas. His favorite. So many possibilities.”

SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (1984)

In a sense, our campus is a blank canvas every fall—ready to be populated, fused with energy and ideas and witticisms, tinged with music and colors.

As the year goes along, students and faculty quite literally fill the canvas. They mount photographs and paintings on empty walls. They fill the shelves of our display cases with ceramics and sculptures. In summer, many of those works depart, leaving empty spaces to be filled once more. But a few pieces linger: a wire sculpture of a bee on the bridge, a pair of memory jugs on the windowsill in Calvin—poignant reminders of the recent past.

Sometimes, artworks come to stay, even becoming synonymous with certain spaces. Myriad students remember the collaborative grid painting of Monet’s bridge, created by students in the early 90's, ❶ displayed above the south stairs in Calvin. Or the “school” of colorful, mismatched ceramic fish, ❷ lining the newer stairs in Hobbes. Further up the stairs, a blue and green waterfall, made up of woven friendship bracelets, evokes the spirit (and love for swimming) of Abby Shapiro ’16, ❸ who passed away at the start of her senior fall.

This past year, we also added to Burke’s permanent collection, including:

❹ Series of three textiles by Roxana Alger Geffen P’22, gifted to the School in the spring 2022

❺ “We Rebuild It” by Maureen Minard P’28, ’31 (History), and gifted to the School by Sean Felix (6th Grade Core / HVE) in spring 2022

❻ Select paintings, photographs, digital artworks, and small ceramic works from students in the Classes of 2024–2029, now displayed year-round on the 1st floor of Hobbes, inviting visitors to consider what they might create

❼ “Four Lines Diagonal Jointed” by George Rickey, donated in 2007 by Susan P. Willens

Burke’s Bridge to the Future STATEGIC PLAN 2024–29

OUR story

EXPLORE ONLINE: burkeschool.org/ strategic-plan2024–2029

In 1968, our co-founders took a BOLD step. Amid the social and cultural upheaval of the sixties, in our nation's capital, they launched a small progressive school—rooted in ethical citizenship and social justice. They hired dynamic, passionate teachers, some of whom remain on the faculty to this day, and drew creative, curious students from around the DC region. Key to their vision was a strong BALANCE among academic rigor, civic engagement, and community wellness.

Over the last five decades, Burke has adapted, evolved, and welcomed new teachers, new leadership, and a new cohort of students and families each year—who are drawn to this vibrant community, where young people can bring their full selves to school. Today, Burke is poised to take another

1970s

bold step forward with this strategic plan, ensuring that our school is well positioned to meet the challenges of the next 3–5 years

planning process

Our Strategic Planning Task Force, advised by Shu Shu Costa of Leadership + Design, convened throughout the 2023–24 school year. Compromised of trustees, faculty, staff, and administrators (six of whom are Burke parents or alumni parents), the Task Force hosted a series of "think tanks" for students, parents, faculty & staff, and alumni in Fall 2023. In February 2024, we hosted Community Design Day, inviting all community members to spend a day in creative discussion and prototyping.

Here is the result of that year-long collaborative process.

OUR strategic plan will center on four priority areas:

1. Our Academic North Star: Challenging, Experiential, Civically Engaged

Our identity as an urban school in DC has provided inspiration and opportunities to engage students in experiential education. Not only do hands-on experiences lead to deeper and more enduring learning, they also epitomize the purpose of a Burke education: to provide a strong academic foundation while practicing the skills of ethical citizens and community members. Woven together, these three threads—academic challenge, experiential learning, civic engagement—form the fabric of the Burke student experience.

2. Fostering Innovation and Sustaining Excellence in the Workplace A core strength has always been the ability to attract diverse faculty and staff who are experts in their fields, motivated and inspired by working with young people, and nourished by the relationships that they develop with students and colleagues. Today, the school must be proactive and intentional about supporting and sustaining our faculty and staff, so that they can deliver a challenging and inspiring educational experience and maintain the joy and balance at the heart of working in schools.

3. Student Well-being and Balance Burke has become known as a school where students can achieve excellence, while maintaining well-being and balance. The alarming rise in anxiety, depression, and mental health challenges among young people in the last decade only makes this priority more urgent. Moreover, we believe that an experiential, civicallyinspired program itself promotes balance, connectedness, and emotional resilience within our students.

4. Financial Resilience and Environmental Sustainability

In order to further secure Burke financially, and to deliver on the initiatives and ambitions laid out in this strategic plan, the school must be both creative and pragmatic (bold and balanced) in its approach to operating costs, fundraising, capital projects, and environmental stewardship.

YOUR participation

Next, we need your energy and expertise for Bold + Balanced.

Each of the four priority areas detailed above has (or will have) numerous initiatives contained within them. To signal interest in one of those areas, please fill out this short form:

We are excited for what the future holds and grateful to the many of you who have, and who will, join us in shaping that future.

Senior Voices

From the Class of 2024

In the week before graduation, seniors and faculty gathered in the Samara Studio Theater to recognize students who received Academic Distinction in one or more departments—based on consistently high performance and advanced coursework in the subject. Each department head also nominates one senior to speak to their passion for the subject.

This year’s speakers were Alex Beracha ʼ24 (World Languages), Erin Roberson ʼ24 (Science), Ethan Moses ʼ24 (History), Maite Bouillon Glassman ʼ24 (Math), and Phoenix Gault-Brown ʼ24 (English). Below is an excerpt from Ethan’s speech, which explored the importance of context in the study of history—and in the achievement of peace.

Whether the start of a revolution, the end of a war, or the beginning of a movement, it is context that allows us to understand the fullness of every situation.

At Burke, we may start with context, but we don‛t stop there; here, we encourage students to embody empathy by challenging them to view history through someone else‛s eyes. That means pushing students to get comfortable with the discomfort they feel when hearing about the crippling effects of discrimination. It means debating the merits of programs to elevate one class of people while also honestly considering its possible negative impact on another. It even means inviting people into our classrooms whose lived experiences expand our horizons by showing us new viewpoints.

So why does it matter that Burke students learn a multitude of perspectives? It all goes back to context; when you understand why someone does what they do, thinks what they think, and lives how they live, you replace the unfamiliar with information, and you trade ignorance for understanding. And you make it possible for people with differing beliefs and backgrounds to peacefully coexist.

A Burke education grounds us through context while elevating us to compassion. And if there is anything the world needs today, it‛s compassion. So, on behalf of cynics everywhere, thank you Burke for not only embracing my curiosity, but also for giving me the gift of understanding.

On the first Saturday in June, the Class of 2024 and hundreds of family and friends (plus more than a few alumni and current students) gathered at the University of the District of Columbia’s Theatre of the Arts for Graduation Ceremonies.

Six seniors delivered speeches, complemented by four musical performances and a keynote address from 12th Grade Dean Jamie Leopold. Below is an excerpt from a speech by Phoenix Gault-Brown ’24, in which he reflected poignantly on the transition from childhood to adulthood, and the potential origins of “senioritis.”

“Of course, I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t feel impacted by senioritis in some way.

By the end of the school year it had definitely gotten harder to turn in assignments, and I did feel some level of apprehension at the thought of having to complete anything at all.

In some sense, I do think that was the result of just being tired, and, in some sense, I think that it was because I wanted to kid myself that I‛m not going to miss Burke; and that's just not true, because I am.

I’m going to miss the unfailingly gracious teachers, the imaginative and witty student-body, the feelings of panic that came from watching my friend eat a whole rotisserie chicken in math class, and so much more.

All of this is to say—I’m going to miss high school, and even if you aren’t ready to admit it yet, I know the rest of you will too. So, as we say goodbye, I implore all of you to look back at your memories fondly, which should be easy because there’s no mandated deadline on reminiscing.

In Memoriam

Max Carpenter ’07 passed away in July. In the words of his father, Bradley Carpenter, ʺMax did not waste many days of his brief, full life. He had just come back from an acting job in China and was preparing to move from California to Iowa. Max grew up at Burke, arriving as a spindly freshman, knowing only Sam Withers ’07. He took risks, as an actor and as a person. He was ready to go almost anywhere, and was a part of many people's lives, people from around the world. Max was a spice in the pot of humanity, someone who made the lives of everyone around him more interesting.”

Past trustee Thomasenia “Tommie” P. Duncan P’22 passed away on April 23, 2024. Born in New York and raised in Baltimore, Tommie graduated from Brown University and earned her JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Long passionate about civil service, Tommie worked in myriad public and private capacities, most recently as Panel Executive for the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. She taught in the law schools at Georgetown and the University of the District of Columbia, was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, served on numerous nonprofit boards, and chaired Burke’s Equity and Inclusion Committee. Tommie is survived by son Hunter Harold ’22, partner Ray Johnson, and Hunter’s father Avron Harold, as well as countless friends and family.

After 20+ years in admissions and 18 years at Burke, Director of Enrollment Management and Financial Aid Kai-Anasa George P’12, ’21 decided to conclude her tenure following the 2023–24 school year, continuing to lead the Admissions team through summer 2024.

Kaiʼs impact at Burke surpasses description. She was often the first person that new families met, and remained a trusted confidant, advisor, and cheerleader for myriad alumn—well beyond their first interview or school tour. Kai was pivotal in creating the Burke of today and providing a voice of insight, perspective, and wisdom amid challenging times. She also recently concluded many years as a Burke parent to Tariye ʼ12 and Kalea ʼ21 (pictured)

(Communications) wrapped up five years at Burke this past September and will join the communications team at District Alliance for Safe Housing. From designing this very magazine to bringing her signature style and energy to Burke’s social media, from leading up the student Yearbook team to producing Burke’s first Culture Day last spring, she has been a key player in the life of the school.

Dear Burke Community

As a parent of both a 2021 graduate and a current 9th grader, Burke has been central to our family’s story for many years. Over that time, I’ve had the privilege of seeing the school navigate moments of great joy and deep challenge, all while remaining unwavering in its commitment to its core values. Whether as a parent, volunteer, trustee, or now as Board President, I have witnessed firsthand how Burke creates a community where students can bring their full selves to school, grow into independent thinkers, and step forward boldly to make a difference in the world.

For more than five decades, Burke has embraced change—welcoming new voices, new leadership, and new families while remaining firmly aligned with its mission. Now, we are poised to take another bold step forward with the launch of our strategic plan, which will guide us over the next three to five years. This plan aligns with where we have always focused our energy and resources: on the wellbeing of everyone in our community—students, faculty, and staff alike— and on continuing to foster an environment where progressive academics, bold, unapologetic teaching, and transformative learning can thrive.

As we move forward guided by this plan, I am inspired by the strength of this community and the extraordinary ways you continue to support Burke. This past year, your generosity and dedication made so much possible. During our Community Day of Giving, 325 donors contributed a record-breaking $230,000+ to the Annual Fund, demonstrating the energy and passion that fuel us. And in April, our Auction for Financial Aid was nothing short of goldmedal worthy, raising nearly $400,000 to ensure Burke remains accessible to all. These achievements are a testament to the strength of our community and our collective commitment to Burke’s vision.

Last year, we said farewell to several extraordinary Board colleagues whose service has left an indelible mark on our school. A special thank you to Dawn Chism, whose leadership, dedication, and vision as Board President were instrumental in guiding the school through significant transitions. I also want to thank Gayle Neufeld, Gretchen Lamberg, and Monique Willard for their invaluable contributions. We are glad to welcome new trustees Chay Rao, Elijah Marentette, Jonathan Davis, La Shada Ham-Campbell, Sabrina Greenman ’97, and Tierney Hunt.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend my deepest gratitude to each of you. Your contributions— whether financial, through volunteerism, or in countless other ways—sustain Burke and ensure it remains a place where students grow into independent thinkers. I look forward to partnering with Steve, the Board, and the entire Burke community to build an even bolder future and ensure Burke remains a place where students thrive for generations to come.

In gratitude and partnership,

Annual Fund

Gifts to the Annual Fund are an investment in the transformative experience of a Burke education. Each year, Burke relies on the collaborative giving of parents, alumni, families, and friends to support the Annual Fund, a source of revenue for the school that has an immediate impact on the Burke experience. The Annual Fund fuels exceptional possibilities across all areas of Burke, providing our students with the skills and abilities they will need to make a difference in the world.

What Inspires You?

When you make a gift to Burke’s Annual Fund* , we invite you to celebrate the part of the Burke experience that inspires you most. Our designated funds represent the most fundamental and mission-driven aspects of Burke’s program.

Burke’s Area of Greatest Need

Your general support grants Burke the financial flexibility to address pressing needs and seize opportunities, benefiting every Burke student, every day.

Financial Assistance & Access

Making a Burke education accessible is a top institutional priority. One way we achieve this is through our need-based financial aid program, which supports not only tuition but myriad aspects of student life—service trips, prom tickets, and academic testing. In 2024–25, we allocated $2.5M to one in three students, averaging over $20,000 per award.

Visual & Performing Arts

While funding for arts education has been in decline elsewhere, the arts remain integral to Burke's curriculum For a small school, Burke offers an amazing variety of opportunities, with 12 choruses and bands, 20 fine art classes, and 3 annual theatrical productions.

Athletics

Teamwork, perseverance, leadership, and sportsmanship are the cornerstones of Burke’s athletics program, and that is why we ensure every student has the opportunity to play. Our no-cut policy enables all Burke students to feel supported while trying new things and taking risks. Our diverse offerings include 25 teams across 9 sports.

Equity, Inclusion & Civic Engagement

At Burke, we believe our students shouldn’t leave any part of themselves at the door. Led by our newly expanded Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Civic Engagement, we foster belonging and understanding through schoolwide dialogue and civic engagement embedded in our curriculum, empowering students to become ethical, active citizens and leaders for social change.

Faculty & Staff Salaries and Development

Burke is its people. Our budget prioritizes retaining and attracting world-class faculty and staff and offers competitive compensation and professional development opportunities. Our advisory program ensures that every Burke student is known, supported, and inspired. Burke is proud to sustain a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

Health, Wellness & Student Support

Student well-being is something we have always taken seriously here at Burke. Our hands-on, experienced learning specialists and full-time school counselor work collaboratively with advisors and teachers to care for the whole student—socially, emotionally, physically, and academically—which creates the conditions for deep and joyful learning.

Experiential Learning & Community Building

The most meaningful, sustainable learning happens when a student is actively engaged in class and community because they feel deep connections to their classmates and teachers. Burke invests in building connections amongst students and teachers and the world around us through communitybuilding trips in the fall, field trips to museums throughout the city, field-based research to local parks, and multi-day civic engagement trips.

*All gifts to the Annual Fund are budget-relieving and help fund the most critical needs within each designated area. Should funds raised exceed our operational needs in a given category, we will redeploy those funds to the area of greatest need. All undesignated gifts will be applied to areas of greatest need.

Many of our donors elect to support Burke’s Area of Greatest Need, but we are also delighted that others choose to tell us what they love about Burke by designating their gift! The following is a list of supporters to each designated giving area outside of Burke’s Area of Greatest Need.

OUR BURKE IS UNITED

Burke’s 4th Annual Community Day of Giving

DECEMBER 6TH, 2023

Burke’s fourth annual Day of Giving on December 6, 2023, was a powerful demonstration of generosity and community spirit in support of Burke’s Annual Fund.. With just 24 hours—1,440 minutes, and 86,400 seconds to give—the Burke community rallied, surpassing our initial goal of 250 donors by late afternoon and unlocking a $55,000 challenge gift from the Board of Trustees. But the excitement only grew from there! We revealed a thrilling “Mystery Match” from Kira Swencki and Mike Mihalke P'22, doubling donations dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000. As the day drew to a close, Kenny McCombs ‛91 added a final $10,000 challenge to reach 300 gifts by midnight—and thanks to your incredible support, we crushed that goal with time to spare!

Generosity poured in from all corners of our community, with challenge gifts for current parent classes, alumni, past parents, and grandparents. Time and again, you exceeded expectations, showing just how deeply the Burke spirit runs.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers and everyone who took part— past, present, near, and far. Your belief in Burke and the transformative education it provides will ensure that future generations of Burke graduates continue to make a difference in the world.

All donors who participated in the Day of Giving are also listed within the Annual Giving participation lists.

325 gifts

During homeroom, students took part in building Burke’s “Bridge of Gratitude.” Each student answered the question, “What are you grateful for?” and took a moment to thank someone who made a difference in their life at Burke. Their messages were assembled into a beautiful installation on the bridge connecting our two buildings—a symbol of gratitude and unity.

The day kicked off with energy and excitement! Thanks to our community’s generosity, we crushed the early donor goal of 50 gifts by midnight the night before, unlocking a special treat for the entire school—donuts for everyone!

$230,451 raised

The whole school came together for an inspiring assembly with special guest, Kenny McCombs, Burke Class of 1991. Kenny shared powerful stories about how his time at Burke shaped his life, and he spoke directly to students about the importance of giving back to the school as alumni.

We hosted our very first Day of Giving Parent Coffee event, where families gathered to enjoy coffee with our Head of School before enjoying our special Day of Giving all-school assembly.

2024 Auction for Financial Aid

You Are The Champions!

On Saturday, April 13, the Burke community suited up in their sharpest tracksuits and most glamorous sweatbands, ready to go for the gold at the 2024 Auction for Financial Aid: Burke Olympics. Our Olympians warmed up with a cocktail hour and silent auction, as they made their way through the Summer and Winter Olympic Villages. Then, with the crowd buzzing like fans in the final sprint of the 100m, everyone took their seats in the Olympic Stadium—just in time to light the Burke torch and officially open the Games!

The evening’s festivities featured gold-medal-worthy moments, including a dazzling synchronized swimming routine (minus the water but not the flair) and a parade of faculty and staff champions that would rival any opening ceremony. Megan Wheeler ’05 took to the stage to deliver a powerful testimony about the power of Burke’s financial aid program and its impact on her own life and educational journey. As the Games reached their thrilling conclusion, Burke’s Olympians had triumphed: together, we raised nearly $400,000 for Financial Aid—a gold-medial-worthy performance worthy of the podium!

We are incredibly grateful to the hundreds of members of our greater Burke community who came together to help make 2024’s Auction one for the record books! Your collective generosity of time, talent, and financial support ensures that we can continue to keep the torch burning bright—making a Burke education accessible to all our students and families. Thanks to you, weʼve truly gone for the gold!

Class of 2024 Senior Family Gift Effort

Each year, senior families at Edmund Burke School uphold the special tradition of contributing to the Senior Family Gift, a meaningful gesture of appreciation for the transformative experiences their children have had. Last year, the Class of 2024 families came together to support an exciting expansion of Burke’s extracurricular offerings, with the potential to introduce new academic clubs such as Debate Club, Robotics Team, Chess Club, and Model UN. These initiatives will not only broaden opportunities for current students but also nurture essential skills like leadership, collaboration, and critical thinking—qualities that will serve them well beyond their years at Burke. We are profoundly grateful for the generosity and commitment of our senior families, whose contributions will help ensure that future students continue to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Congratulations and thank you to the Class of 2024 graduates and their families!

Our Mission

Burke consciously brings together students who are different from one another in many ways, actively engages them in their own education, holds them to high expectations, gives them power and responsibility, and supports and advances their growth as skilled and independent thinkers who step forward to make positive contributions to the world in which they live.

Equity

and Inclusion at Burke

Burke respects the dignity and humanity of our students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and trustees, as well as our broader community. We embrace a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We strive to cultivate understanding and appreciation of diversity that includes, but is not limited to, age, ability, ethnicity, family structure, gender, gender identity, political perspectives, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. We acknowledge and encourage differences of opinions, ideas, and interests, and we expect thoughtful discussion and civil engagement.

Burke affirms the individual worth of all community members, and we challenge behaviors that demean, marginalize, or exclude others. Our goal is to maintain a diverse school community that exemplifies these values and to fulfill our commitment to equity and inclusion consistently in all areas of school and community life.

1968: Edmund Burke School Magazine is produced by the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs and the Office of Communications and Marketing for alumni, parents, family, and friends of the School. Letters and comments are welcome. The editors express their appreciation to all the writers and photographers who contributed to this issue of 1968. ©2024
