Dear Burke Community, Heading into my second year at Burke, I no longer carry the title “new head of school” but rather “gently used.” Nevertheless every new school year feels fresh, and full of possibilities and new learning.

When I traverse the Atrium or observe the arrival of our 6th and 7th graders in the morning on the 4th floor, it is already hard to discern who the new kids are. We’ve also welcomed several new colleagues to Burke, and they are already making an impact and bringing their talents and gifts to their work with students and around campus.

Each new year is an opportunity to assemble the diverse community that has always been our north star: at Burke, we “consciously bring students together who are different from one another in many ways.”This fall, we welcomed 59 new students and their families. They are a diverse group from DC, Maryland, Virginia, and even the West Coast, and from 43 different sending schools: 55% public and charter, 39% private, and 7% international and homeschool programs.

The Board of Trustees has begun our strategic planning process, which fuels a sense of what is possible in the years to come. In collaboration with Leadership+Design (the strategy firm we’re working with), we are inviting voices from all constituencies to share their stories of Burke and their hopes for its future. hope that you will add your voice to this conversation and participate in some of the listening sessions, think tanks, interviews, and the Community Design Day on February 10, 2024.

Our year also began with the full restoration of the bridge connecting Calvin and Hobbes. The design choices, informed by input from all members of the community, allowed us to bring the bridge back and simultaneously enhance security, safety, and privacy. The bridge provides a physical connection for our community, but also holds symbolic importance as we continue our healing journey from April 2022.

As I wrote to our families and students this past October, believe that the crucial duty of education is to compel students to grapple with the dark forces in the world so that they can work to heal the world of its brokenness. That work can take many shapes and forms. And that work occurs amid hope, empathy, and understanding.

In partnership,

Steve McManus
HEAD OF SCHOOL

A well-known Burke tradition, the annual “bonding trips” enable 6th-11th graders to explore and connect with their classmates away from campus.

This year, Middle School spent Thursday together at Bretton Woods, enjoying the outdoors and the view from the trees. The following day, 6th-7th grade headed to Springfield, VA, for some indoor climbing and obstacle courses, while 8th grade tackled the challenging Billy Goat Trail, spending a full day hiking and scrambling.

Over in the High School, 9th graders stayed overnight at Camp Letts on the Rhode River in Edgewater, MD, while the 10th grade camped out in Harpers Ferry, WV. 11th grade enjoyed a much-anticipated overnight in New York City, visiting Bryant Park, taking the Staten Island Ferry, and walking and biking through different neighborhoods.

FALL RETROSPECTIVE

Our astute readers, not to mention social media observers, may have noticed a slight change in recent years.

Once nearly ubiquitous, the blue brick wall of the Atrium is no longer the background for every assembly and guest speaker photo. As our student population has expanded, the Atrium has become a bit snug for all-school assemblies, which now are held in the newly renovated Gym – providing a lighter, brighter backdrop, albeit a less familiar one.

By way of reassurance, traffic in the Atrium has otherwise stayed constant. Seniors cram into the Senior Lounge in the northeast corner, students sit at (or on, or under) tables during study halls and free periods, and stray game pieces and art supplies always make their way onto the carpet.

As in any school year, much changes and much abides.

In this particular year, we are fortunate to have some time and space to reflect – to look at the myriad routines and traditions and habits that constitute Burke and consider what to preserve, what to honor, and what to rethink and reinvent for the future.

To that end, the Board of Trustees has launched a strategic planning process in partnership with Leadership+Design. Engaging with all constituencies, past and present, we are first exploring the broad contours of what our community needs and desires and then starting to think big about our school’s next chapters.

Some things may change, both in and beyond our blue brick walls – and yet Burke’s propensity for exploration, curiosity, and idiosyncrasy will abide. We look forward to engaging with you in the coming months.

HISTORY ON TRIAL

OCTOBER 2023

In 10th grade Modern World History, a special tribunal* convened to determine who was most responsible for crimes committed against the Taínos and the other indigenous peoples in the Caribbean basin under Spain’s oppressive rule in the late 15th century.

Students presented different arguments for Christopher Columbus, his crew and men, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain, and the system of empire itself, and the judges assessed the evidentiary material, artifacts, and presentations.

* tribunal members were Head of School Steve M., Mustafa N. (History), and Judyth A. (Math)

ROCKING THE VOTE

SEPTEMBER 2023

Did you know? DC, Maryland, and Virginia all permit preregistration for voting beginning at 16 years old. In the District, you can pre-register at 16 and register if you are “at least 17 years old and at least 18 years old by the next General Election.”

Spearheaded by Co-Presidents Aaron H. ‘25 and Lucy M. ‘24, the Student Government Association (SGA) hosted a non-partisan voter registration drive on Tuesday, September 19, supported by Gwen Stewart, an active voter registration volunteer in Montgomery County, and James Tandaric, the Vice Chair of our local ANC (3F).

AN INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSOR ADAM LERNER ‘09

Even when graduating from Burke, Adam Lerner ‘09 assumed a decidedly global focus.

A Burke “lifer,” Adam spent 6th through 11th grade on Upton Street, but then headed to Spain through School Year Abroad (SYA) for the entirety of his senior year. From there, he earned his BA in English and International Relations at Cornell University, this time complemented by study abroad in Paris.

As a 2013-14 Henry Luce Scholar, Adam moved from Ithaca, NY, to New Delhi, India, for a work placement at The Caravan, India’s only narrative journalism magazine. After a stint with Politico in DC, Adam returned to Europe, ultimately earning his MA in Modern South Asian Studies and PhD in Politics and International Studies from the University of Cambridge. While he completed his PhD program in 2019, he did not receive his degree until 2020 due to the higher education strikes (not an uncommon occurrence in the UK, Adam reports).

Following four years at Royal Holloway, University of London, Adam returned to the States – specifically to Somerville, MA, and to the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he serves as Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Bachelor of Liberal Arts program. In the last year, he has drawn significant attention, and accolades, for “From the Ashes of History: Collective Trauma and the Making of International Politics” (Oxford University Press). The book has received the 2023 Peter Katzenstein Award (Cornell) and the 2023 Edgar S. Furniss Book Award from the Mershon Center (Ohio State), among other honors.

In “From the Ashes of History”, Adam lays out a “theoretical framework for understanding and interpreting collective trauma and international politics” and draws on three case studies: India in the 1930-1950s, Israel during the Eichmann trial in the 1960s, and the United States following the 9/11 attacks.

How did you progress from literature to political science?

The English department encompassed the Creative Writing program, and I always had a passion for writing. enjoyed writing political satire and comedy, even stand-up, at those intersections between politics and literature. I assumed would write humor or book reviews after college, but The Caravan had neither – so I landed on political journalism. In graduate school, was drawn further into, and really started to enjoy, the world of political theory.

In conducting your PHD research, and ultimately writing the book, how did you select those three case studies?

We could go down a rabbit hole on principles of case selection and criteria; in short, I wanted to select a diverse group of cases to show that the framework could apply to multiple nations and scenarios. I also made decisions based on the archives and sources that I could access. I was able to order documents from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which are written in multiple languages, and I speak decent Hindi, which enabled research in India.

The book explores how collective trauma can shape actors and actions on a global scale. What is the difference between personal and collective (or national) trauma?

When we think about trauma in an individual person, it often stems from a violent event or a major shock that reshapes how you think about the world. Some scholars would argue that collective trauma is totally divorced from that and serves more as a narrative template. But take issue with that. While collective trauma may involve some social construction, that underlying experience of violence really matters.

You are contending with a multi-level crisis in representation. How does a violent experience scale up from an individual (who may have such a hard time articulating their experience as is) to the state and then to the globe? The book looks at how experiences of war and genocide ultimately translate into a political narrative.

ABOUT HIS BOOK FROM THE ASHES OF HISTORY

COLLECTIVE TRAUMA AND THE MAKING OF INTERNATIONAL POLITICS

In the LSE Review of Books, Kanchan Panday writes, “The scholarship on trauma has shown that in the aftermath of traumatic events, the trauma becomes a mode of identification for the group and helps create “us” and “them” binaries.” Is that a universal negative?

There is a normative, values-based component of the book. The trauma lens can help us develop a better understanding of people, and not just the policy makers. It can serve as an hermeneutic. But we lack the moral ground to make a “good” or “bad” assessment about its effects. In Korea, for example, narratives of trauma were key in building support for programs that lifted people out of poverty – but the outcomes of the policies were problematic.

I don’t draw uniform conclusions, but rather talk about how trauma really challenges traditional assumptions in international politics. We have a tendency in rational social science to project certain consequences within a given time period. But trauma can take time to work through, and you need to analyze it on its own terms. You can’t know where it will lead, but you can “tune yourself” to look for it.

Is there a way to honor a history of trauma and violence, while also acknowledging that they can make us unreliable narrators?

Giving space to narrative reconciliation is really important – giving space for people to narrate and express their trauma and incorporate it into politics. Processes of commemoration and memorialization are crucial as well. I don’t draw any firm conclusions, but we often talk about “working through” in trauma studies, meaning you can get through the negative aspects and then into more productive politics. We should listen and think and be politically sensitive, but there is no “one size fits all” solution.

How do we teach students to grapple with history in these more qualitative ways? (Say, looking at identity formation rather than data and dates)

This is really important. When we study history, especially major wars and conflicts in world history, we can see a tendency to sanitize because it’s hard to engage with the level of violence inherent in imperialism and the degree of injustice. It’s hard to go that deep with young students. The details are extremely difficult, but think they are important.

People love the military history of the Roman Empire, which can be very event-focused. But these events have long legacies for actual people. In the US, the Black Lives Matter movement really has pushed us to contend with the long legacy of racial violence and mass enslavement in this country. We need to see how the injury goes beyond the event.

In teaching political science, how do you hope the field will progress?

The field has focused on big data and computational methods, and there has been a real turn away from theory. PhD students often don’t study normative theory or even a variety of lenses that let you view the same event in different lights. The same event can look wildly different from a new angle. I hope to see a re-engagement with theory even as we embrace big data methods. I would say, don’t be afraid of normative theory! Data is important but not the only way to understand.

CELEBRATING 3S AND 8S

Nearly 100 alumni, faculty & staff, and guests traveled from around the country (and in some cases, overseas), to return to Burke’s campus on Connecticut Avenue this fall for Alumni Weekend and Reunion festivities.

The weekend kicked off on Saturday, October 30 with beautiful weather as Burke grads from every decade gathered on Burke’s rooftop for a festive celebration. Cheers to the classes ending in 3s and 8s who join in the fun to celebrate their milestone Reunions! On Sunday, we gathered at Franklin Hall for a family friendly gathering.

Thank you to all of our Reunion alumni who participated in the special Reunion Giving Challenge. A special thanks and congratulations to the Class of 1988 who took the prize for most class participation in the effort!

BENGALS AT THE BALLPARK

On September, 19th, Burke returned to the ballpark for our second annual all-community Washington Nationals game. Alumni and their families, past and current faculty and staff, and current families came together to celebrate the end of summer and to cheer on our home team against the Phillies.

JAMES PELLETIER ‘91 runs a charitable organization and skateboard team, which completes an annual clean-up day on Earth Day – using grabbers while they skateboard to pick up trash en route to downtown DC from Burke. In September, the team also skated 47 miles in one day and raised $4,200 for Metachromatic Leukodystrophy.

Body Count’s Body Count (Bloomsbury) by BEN APATOFF ‘02 is now on the shelves. Drawing on years of research and interviews, the book chronicles the heavy metal band, fronted by Ice-T, and their enduring effect on modern music.

Congratulations to ANEESAH BLOUNT ‘09 named a runner-up for DC 2024 Teacher of the Year this past October! A kindergarten teacher at Van Ness Elementary School, Aneesah has been an early childhood educator in DC public and public charter schools for 11 years now. The Burke faculty are incredibly proud of you, Aneesah.

IN MEMORY

SCOTT REYNOLDS

On June 29, 2023, retired Burke staff member and coach, Scott Reynolds, passed away from cardiac arrest.

Scott led the Facilities team at Burke from 2016 until his retirement at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. He knew the campus inside and out, played a key role in the recent renovation and in many school events, and even constructed the sets for our theatrical season. And he put in countless hours to aid our community through the pain and challenges of the last several years.

For alumni and students, one of his best-known roles was as the beloved coach of the three-time conference championship softball team. He supported and inspired every athlete, showing constant belief and wisdom.

GINGER

MANDEL

Ginger Mandel ‘15 passed away on August 12, 2023, from complications during childbirth.

The Burke community keeps Ginger’s son Harry Mandel, parents Thorne Rankin and Jack Mandel, sister Salli Mandel ‘17, and stepmother Tina Eck in our hearts.

Passionate and creative, Ginger cared deeply about sustainability, environmentalism, and food justice, working for Union Kitchen and serving in FoodCorps. “I was interested in loving the planet and caring for it,” she said in an interview for alma mater Guilford College. That love and care – for family, friends, and this world – always stood out.

DAVID SHAPIRO

BURKE HEAD OF SCHOOL 1999 - 2011

We are heartbroken to share that David Shapiro, Burke’s Head of School from 1999 to 2011, passed away on Thursday, November 23.

ANN WHITE

On September 29, 2023, Ann White passed away from a heart attack at the age of 84. Ann is survived by her sons Father Mark White ‘88 and Ben White ‘90 and grandsons Jacob and Raphael.

A beloved leader, colleague, and friend, Ann taught history at Edmund Burke School from 1980 until her retirement in 2005. The namesake of Ann’s Academy (Room 4), she was appointed the school’s inaugural Academic Dean in 1988.

As Monica Miracky wrote in 2018, “Fiercely independent, outspoken, and well-read, Ann White demonstrated the power of human intellect every day, inspiring her students and colleagues to do the same. For 25 years, Ann was a fierce champion for the life of the mind.”

David’s accomplishments, too numerous to name, still infuse our school daily: the Hobbes building (dedicated in 2006), the new mission statement, the “color day” rotation (with a wardrobe to match!), and many more. Moreover, David himself was an ebullient, creative, clever, and truly one-of-a-kind presence at Burke. His impact on students, families, and past and current faculty and staff cannot be overerstated.

“My years at Burke were full of good times, great times, fun times, sad times, inspirational times, interesting times, always full of fabulous kids.”

- David’s remarks at the 50th Anniversary Gala

Dear Burke Community,

During this, Burke’s 55th anniversary, as we journey together through a year-long strategic planning process, I feel a deep sense of appreciation for the decades of students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, grandparents, family and friends who have come before us and have shaped Burke into the vibrant and dynamic community that it is today.

This reflection on our history also underscores our shared responsibility to pay it forward. Our actions today are vital in ensuring that Burke evolves and thrives through its next half century — and beyond. Like our predecessors, each one of us has something special to contribute toward making Burke the best place it can possibly be for future generations of students. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am proud and humbled by our community’s generosity during the 2022-23 school year. Thank you for paying it forward for Burke.

We certainly had a fundraising year to be proud of. During our third annual Community Day of Giving in December, we witnessed the excitement and energy as 314 donors gave to the school in a 24-hour period, raising a record-breaking $210,000+ in support of the Annual Fund! Another highlight was April’s Auction for Financial Aid, where the collective support of our Burke disco devotees raised over $390,000. It was a dazzling night of giving and gettin’ down! These momentous achievements are possible because of your generosity, and they speak to your dedication to ensuring Burke’s future.

Thank you for your financial contributions that sustain us. Thank you for your countless volunteer hours that nurture the Burke community. And thank you for the multitude of other ways you give of yourself and your resources to make Burke the extraordinary place that it is.

I would also like to share a very special thanks to a number of exceptional board colleagues whose terms ended at the conclusion of the 2022-23 school year: Co-President Kira Swencki; Former President Sharon Davis; Emily Alexander; Ruta Puskorius; Thomasenia Duncan; Lisa Hall; John Jenkins; and Chris VanArsdale. We are deeply grateful for your service and partnership.

I look forward to all that we will celebrate and achieve together during the 2023-24 school year. Burke’s future is bright, and on behalf of the school and the Board of Trustees, am deeply grateful for the role you continue to play in making that possible.

With Gratitude,

SENIOR FAMILY CLASS GIFT

In the cherished tradition of our Burke community, our graduating class’s families joined with immense gratitude and love to support the Senior class fundraising effort. Parents of the class of 2023’s goal was to enhance the lives of the dedicated teachers and staff who have played a pivotal role in shaping their children. With joy and generosity, the Class of 2023 helped transform faculty/ staff lounges into cozy sanctuaries, and in a beautiful gesture of appreciation, they equipped each building with upgraded coffee makers. This has had a huge impact on our community and It’s a reminder that Burke is not just a place of learning; it’s a family built on community connection and shared experiences.

Congratulations, and thank you to the Class of 2023 graduates and their families! CLASS OF 2023

these kids can change the world.

Last December brought Burke’s third annual Day of Giving. Together, we did it - and then some! During this 24-hour, community-wide effort on December 7, 2022, we sailed beyond our original goal of 250 donors by late afternoon, securing a $25,000 challenge grant from Kira Swencki and Mike Mihalke P’22. And before we knew it, the Burke community rallied to surpass 300 gifts before the clock struck midnight, unlocking another overall challenge grant of $10.000 from Dawn Chism P’21 ‘24. (until we broke our record again in 2023!)

ANNUAL GIVING

Gifts to the Annual Fund are an investment in the transformative experience of a Burke education. Each year, Burke relies on the collaborative giving of parents, alumni, family, and friends to support the Annual Fund, a source of revenue for the school that has an immediate impact on the Burke experience. The Annual Fund fuels exceptional learning opportunities across academics, athletics, and the arts, providing our students with the skills and abilities they will need to make a difference in the world.

The following is a list of all donors who made gifts to either the Annual Fund or Financial Aid between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. We list our donors by class year, giving circle, and special funds, so many names appear more than once. We’ve made every effort to provide an accurate and complete list of donors. However, if we have accidentally made an error in your listing, please accept our sincerest apologies and contact the Development Office so that we can correct our records.

Please note that any tax-deductible gifts, including gifts made through the 2023 Auction, are reflected in the donor’s giving circle placement.

On Saturday, April 15, our disco devotees donned their most dazzling attire and followed the call of the disco ball all the way Edmund Burke School for a night of giving and gettin’ down at the annual Auction for Financial Aid. Cocktail hour and the silent auction were a Boogie Woogie Wonderland in the Commons and Atrium, before guests were invited to Do the Hustle downstairs to “Studio 68” in the gymnasium for the main event. With a groovy performance by Burke’s Band D and appearances by Elton John, Cher, Sylvester, Liza Minelli, Donna Summer, John Travolta, and the Bee Gees, we couldn’t help but be swept up by Disco Fever

Disco Made Us Do It, and together, we raised over $390,000 for Burke’s Financial Aid Program!

We are incredibly grateful to the hundreds of members of our greater Burke community who put their boogie shoes on and came together to help make 2023’s Auction one for the books! Your collective generosity of time, talent, and financial support helps us continue to prioritize making a Burke education accessible for all our students and families. We Can Dig It!

OUR BURKE IS UNITED

Burke is a place that embraces our students for exactly who they are, where learning is interactive and joyful, and where they are becoming engaged and compassionate citizens.

We invite you to share with us what about Burke is the most meaningful to you when you make your gift to the Annual Fund. Whether it is student wellness and support, our equity, inclusion, & civic engagement initiatives, or ensuring we retain and support our excellent faculty and staff, we invite you to designate your gift to the part of our program that matters most to you.

Thank you to those who have already supported the 23-24 Annual Fund!
