Welcome back! Your dedication to our school and its mission has kept us steady over these many months - and has drawn us back together for such an inspiring start to a new school year. Faculty and staff members have deeply enjoyed being with their students and getting reacquainted, as we all reacclimate to the more typical routines and rhythms of school.

What has been marvelous to observe is how excited our students are to be with one another and their teachers. Such enthusiasm leads to great dialogue, discussion, and opportunities to collaborate with peers. We have revelled in the dynamic ideas, deep thinking, and earnest debates students bring to their classes. And dare I say, we have found delight in our students’ mischievousness (... just a little) and relished every moment of their laughter. All of these moments remind us of how special it is to be with students when they need adults who care deeply about them. At Burke, our faculty and staff are committed to knowing our students well, so that they can be most responsive to their social, emotional, and intellectual needs. From advisory to grade meetings to assemblies, we are able to check in on their psychological well-being, coach them on the importance of wellness and care, and review strategies for keeping up with the demands of school life. Even for students who were in-person for much of last year, a full campus and a busy schedule require adjustment. As an institution committed to the lives of young people, Burke provides an environment where students develop the intellectual strength, moral reasoning, and critical consciousness to do good in the world. I am so glad that we can pursue this work together once more.

Warm regards,

Damian R. Jones Head of School

FALL RETROSPECTIVE

WHAT WE NOTICE IS THE SOUND. Hurried footfalls in the stairwells. Vocal scales from the chorus room. Rustling pages in the library. Loose soccer balls in the drive aisle. Constant chatter among students and teachers, echoing from the Atrium and the Commons, from the 2nd and 4th floor terraces during “mask breaks” and from the front steps and drive aisle at the end of the day. Following months in a near-silent building, we welcomed the return of students (and their sounds) in November 2020. The noise began to build in January 2021, when 6th and 7th graders were given the option to take all classes in-person (without the need to rotate). In April, that option extended to 8th-12th graders. Graduation, Moving Up, and Summer @ Burke camps all were held in person – although many students and their families needed to remain home throughout the spring. This September, we were all back together–for the first time since an assembly on March 12, 2020. For the first time since COVID-19 was declared a national emergency. For the first time in almost 17 months. And the sounds have been unmistakable: upbeat, inquisitive, sometimes uncertain, and generally boisterous. On October 1, we celebrated Homecoming with our first live music performance in the Atrium, where Advanced Band launched into an upbeat medley, featuring “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls (to the pleasure of the Millenials and Gen X-ers on site). Due to safety concerns, only 12th graders watch Assembly in-person for now, with other grades joining via livestream from their homerooms. But on this day, 11th and 10th graders were able to look down from the 2nd floor of Calvin, and we made space for 9th graders to move into the Atrium from their usual post in the library. In many ways, the pandemic’s legacy may be one of silence–of inequity, loss, and great pain experienced in isolation, too often unacknowledged. As we begin to look towards life on the other side, we still can give voice to what we have seen. We must still advocate. We must speak up for those who no longer can. We have silence to fill, and more music to play. - Julia H. Cain Director of Communications & Marketing Winter 2021

SPOTLIGHTS KELLY FALK

KEVIN FORDE

MÓNICA VALLIN

WAN RYU

What keeps you at Burke? “The care all my colleagues have for students and one another.”

Where did you grow up? Silver Spring, MD.

What are your favorite subjects to teach? “Literature and culture and food because you can connect them to race and politics, to family; they are central to social justice movements in ways that are not always apparent. Every food has a story behind it.”

How have you seen technology change? “We are in this weird time where technology is so integrated into society that it’s a constant battle of catch-up. How do we keep up with where it’s going?”

HS Science Burke Tenure: 2009-Present

What lessons can we take from the last year? “Remembering who we are at our core, what we lost and what we’re trying to get back.” Now in her 13th year in the Science Department, Kelly has been in the classroom since earning her degree in Physics from Ohio State. “But in teaching,” she remarks, “you continually perfect your craft, and that lends itself to improving every year.” Unique among Burke teachers, Kelly teaches almost exclusively seniors (and the occasional junior). That also gives students a chance to reinvent themselves as they prepare for college. “I have no preconceived notions,” Kelly explains. “Who they are now, as a senior, is who they are to me.” Nowadays, the capacity to evaluate scientific literature – not just in the classroom, but in the world and in online spaces – has moved to the forefront. Recently Kelly’s colleagues Morgan (Biology), and Allison (Earth Science) presented to their department on the Claim-Evidence-Research (CER) scaffold, “discussing how students can tease out what lies behind a claim and what makes it valid, and why such scientific literacy is much more important now than when I first started.” Kelly adds, “We can’t compare our kids now to kids prior to the pandemic. They are experiencing their third year of disruption, and we can’t teach in exactly the same way [as before] and get the same results.”

Assistant Director of Athletics Burke Tenure: 2012-Present

What do you appreciate about Athletics at Burke? “Seeing kids who never tried something jump in and fall in love [and] seeing the work being done upstairs transform students down on the field.” An athlete from the offset, Kevin played basketball (as did his younger brother) and football at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and was recruited for the latter by Salisbury University. While his undergraduate work was in PR and marketing, with a minor in athletic coaching, Kevin always knew he wanted to work with students. Following positions in the restaurant industry, advertising industry, and event services in National Harbor, Kevin began as a basketball coach in the Middle School in 2012 – and has been on the Burke court ever since. Burke’s signature “no cut policy” and focus on equity both appeal to Kevin, who sees students develop a passion for sports well into their teenage years. At Burke, he says, “I see players see and realize when a peer doesn’t feel comfortable and [they] do something about it.”

HS Spanish / 10th Grade Dean Burke Tenure: 2018-Present

How could language instruction in the United States improve? “Learning another language isn’t mandatory – which is so key for the mind’s development. It opens the door to learning about other cultures and, ideally becoming more inclusive and accepting. Now, in Bolivia and Peru, students are learning indigeneous languages and we’re seeing that decolonization of education in Mexico. But not in the US.” As she concluded her tenure at Ethical Culture Fieldston School in the Bronx, Mónica was heartbroken to leave progressive education. Fieldston’s Head of School at the time was friends with David Shapiro* and advised her, “When you can, make your way to Burke.” In the interim, she taught at a K-12 school in Virginia and earned her Ph.D from Georgetown University in Spanish Literature in 2017. While passionate about the intellectual discourse of her Ph.D program, Mónica was drawn back to “the soul” of high school, where “you are really getting to know a child and helping them shape their life.” Reflecting on the past year, Mónica says, “the pandemic really forced us to look at equitable access to learning and differentiated instruction. You can’t assume every child has different colored markers, let alone access to Zoom.” When asked how today’s students may look back on this time, she hypothesizes that “it will be this generation’s Mexican Revolution [1910-1920], which inspired and informed literature into the 1980s. We may see these 6th graders writing those novels in 2030 years.” *Burke’s former Head of School (1999-2011)

Associate Director of Technology Burke Tenure: 2015-Present

How do you spend your free time? “Playing with my baby – everything I used to enjoy immediately changed.” Few have worked at rival schools back-to-back, and Wan is among them. He was a student at The Field School from 7th-12th grade (before the school expanded to 6th) and then earned his BFA in Illustration, with a focus on oil painting, from the Rhode Island School of Design. He adds that he would often take apart his friends’ graphic design PCs when they broke. Wan returned to Field for 13 years – before making the move to Upton Street and becoming Burke’s Associate Director of Technology. In reflecting on technology education, Wan points out that today’s students have likely interacted with devices since they were young children. They are used to communicating in online spaces with people who are not their immediate friends; they are connected to the broad world in a way that most adults were (and are) not. He adds that the pandemic, “accidentally gave educational technology a boost,” but also forced reliance on technology and increased susceptibility to disinformation campaigns – “and we need to handle that, as people.”

SENIOR PROJECTS In a typical year, seniors projects are two-week internships or independent studies, often completed at local organizations and nonprofits. While most on-site projects were not in the cards (and the timeline was shorter), the Class of 2021 took on an impressive array of hands-on work:

With seven fellow seniors, Julia P. ‘21 led a project on independent mobility for young children, modifying ride-on cars into adaptive equipment through rewiring and support structures

Working with the Department of Energy & Environment, Morgan D. ‘21 followed a study on air quality in public transit stations and conducted her own research at Metro stations around DC

Both a skilled skateboarder and editor, Owen O. ‘21 crafted an upbeat short film, documenting travels around DC by skateboard

Inspired by the British program, Jen C., Lily B., Sujin L., Abby R. & Maya C. ‘21 created “The Great Burke Bake-Off,” competing to make the most delectable treats and donating them to the breakfast cafe at Capitol Hill United Methodist Church

Q: What memories stand out?

A Family Practice: an an interview interview about about Burke, Burke, medicine, medicine, and and health health

On August 18, 2021, we spoke with three alumni members of the Salky family, all of whom have taken paths into the healthcare field: Sarah ‘01, Rebecca ‘11 (Becca), and father Steven. Becca, remembers Burke as the place she met her best friends and grew close with so many teachers, including Elizabeth Sislen and Daniel Running, both of which still teach in the English Department, and longtime Head of Middle School Monica Miracky, who passed away in summer 2020 after 40 years at Burke. Becca says, “the closeness they allowed stood out” – and paved the way for her to attend Skidmore College and to develop those same connections with professors. Sarah began at Burke in 1995. Before selecting a school, she sat in on Nigel Hinshelwood’s 7th grade linguistics class – literally, as numerous students elected to sit on the floor and Nigel didn’t object*. Between the small size of the class and its emphasis on creative thought, she came home “wide-eyed” that a school existed that could meet her needs. 8 \\

* Nigel retired in June 2021 after 34 years at the school.

Sarah: Being able to participate in sports. I wanted to be able to compete and that may not have been possible at a larger school. I even did wrestling for one trimester, and did cross-country with David [Panush]. We approached learning without the strict boundary of “you must do it this way.” As long as we were still absorbing the knowledge, you didn’t have to do it the traditional classroom way. Teachers just ran their classrooms in a way that worked for different people; teachers could be creative. Becca: I did so much theater with Richard [Carlson] and really wasn’t an athlete, so they let me do extra arts credits and just manage teams. [Burke was] such a personalized experience, with the understanding that every student was different. I needed to miss some time in 11th grade, and Burke restructured it so that I could still have the full education, but without the pressure. Steve: I served on the Board of Trustees for many years with Head of School David Shaprio, and the individualized learning approach was what we were looking for as parents. We have two other daughters at different DC schools, and we wanted them all to have different experiences and be able to separate themselves. [Sarah and Becca] were able to do that by being at a school that gave them personalized attention and molded the content for their specific strengths and weaknesses. Our kids were not lost in the shuffle of a bigger, more traditional school.

ated Bachelor’s in nursing and worked at George Washington University, and I’m now doing research at Mass General on my own autoimmune disease. I’m working on clinical trials for new medications, supervised by my original neurologist. It took twenty years to receive my diagnosis and I had always done my own research, starting in the Burke library. Steve: Rebecca’s doctor, a leading researcher in the field, wanted Rebecca to work with him because she has so much personal knowledge about this disease. This has become a true team effort between the two of them. Sarah: Burke provided that sense of confidence for us, to believe in ourselves and ask for what we need. I went to Kenyon College and played DIII soccer. It was a great experience to play the sport that I loved for 4 years. Right after college, I went down the path that I always had – differentiating myself from siblings!

I moved to Boulder and, after a few years, went back to school for psychology. I’m now the Director of Operations at a 96-bed inpatient hospital, as well as two out-patient off-sites. I oversee licensing, quality, on-boarding, risk management, and operational crisis – mental health is a challenge for staff as well as patients. Steve: I am a very latecomer to health care! I practiced law for close to 40 years. My dad was a physician and, while I rejected going to medical school early in my life, his influence has always called to me. Rebecca and Sarah’s careers have given me inspiration, so I start nursing school officially on August 30. I’m spending a lot of time doing the preparation, which is fairly daunting for me because my computer skills are ancient (or new, because I never had them). this is a new challenge for me. I like to be tested, in the sense of learning something new and not being satisfied with what I already know. Sarah: It was always instilled in us both to have expertise in some capacity. We are all in the giving profession in one way or another, and that speaks to our values as a family. We do hard, sometimes unrewarding work. It’s daunting. But nurses are probably the most needed in the field right now – and therapists, for sure.

How had COVID affected those plans? Sarah: I was on maternity leave for most of the lockdown, as my son was born two weeks before. I went through the culture shock of returning to work right away, as hospitals don’t stop, and not being able to hug or touch my colleagues. We are definitely seeing an increase in patients with substance abuse, exacerbated by isolation. Colorado called a mental health emergency for kids. It’s so hard to see how COVID has impacted mental health for people, and I’m just grateful we can offer a safe place to them. Becca: I actually moved to part-time in February 2020. I was doing day and night shifts, three 12-hour shifts, sometimes 16-hour shifts. I was already down-shifting and then chose to leave in April. Patients couldn’t have visitors. My last act was to petition for a dying man to see his family in-person. In the following six months, I started support groups for people with my autoimmune disease, and we now have 6-10 people each week. I also emailed my doctor with a concern, and he asked what I was doing. And then he asked again to come work for him at Mass General. I have been at this job since February 2021. Steve: I think Burke gave both of them a great foundation: the value of community and self-realization.

Do you sense the School has changed since your time here, and how? Steve: My experience is that things have not changed dramatically. We had a big debate about the stress on academic rigor and letting Burke be Burke, and not try to change. I was probably of the view that Burke could stress academics without affecting its longevity. MUSICALLY HYBRID

GRADUATION & MOVING UP

To ensure a final curtain call for graduating seniors, The Wedding Singer premiered in late May and incorporated performers from school and from home. Graduating seniors and principal actors rehearsed and recorded at locations around campus – and even traveled to The Black Cat on 14th Street for on-location filming. These performances were then edited together with at-home singing and dancing from a dozen ensemble members to create a full-length show, available via streaming and on-demand through mid-June.

On the first Sunday in June, in the shadow of the Washington National Cathedral, the 57 members of the Class of 2021 received their diplomas from the Head of School and the Chair of the Board of Trustees and joined the ranks of Edmund Burke School alumni.

to be and what you need to achieve, to be successful in life. And you need to understand that it’s all a lie, because no one truly knows who you are, but yourself. [...] I came into high school thinking that I would be the best student out there, and that I would be singing with my peers like in High School Musical – which did not come true might I add, and I hope you all realize that I’m not talking about the “best student” part. But at the end of it all, none of my expectations truly mattered, because I found more than I would have ever would’ve imagined. I found a family. This includes my teachers that taught me many things in class, that I have sadly all forgotten since summer started – but most importantly tools to use for when I’m off to college; Damian, who has always made time to chat during lunch; the most unique classmates that make everyday a surprise; a great group of friends that have become my sisters; and finally, finding happiness within the person that I am becoming – or at least starting to become, since my journey is far from over. And I could start going into a spiel about how I’ve grown and my hardships, but this isn’t an essay for the Common App (aren’t we all glad that’s over?). So I’ll leave the class of 2021, or shall I say my family, with this:

MOVING UP The 8th grade’s ceremonial progression into the High School stood out this spring: theirs was the first fully in-person event in the theater since the 2019-20 musical. As we come to this final chapter, remember to take chances and make the most of being young and weird, because the right people and lessons will come to you at the right time. And because why wear grey like everyone else when you can wear neon green?

[...] Math is a cumulative discipline, so I will surely have to recall many things I learned in Burke math classes as I move forward in life. When I do, I’ll remember those over-excited moments (and probably cringe). But more generally, I’ll look back fondly on a wonderful seven years learning from the wonderful people of the Burke Math Department.

had visited campus, yet once we were all together, it felt like just yesterday. After such a difficult and tumultuous year (and a half) on so many fronts – and after the 2019-20 school year ended without the closure we so greatly desired – it was so joyful to be together once again! For those of you who were unable to join us, you were certainly missed.

Jordan Cardone ‘77 is living in Maine, where she has spent 12 years with the Brunswick Area Teen Center, running a free after-school and summer program for kids in 6-12th grades and providing meals, support, and a safe environment for youth. She reports, “four grown children have taught me a lot about the teenage years – both the good and the extremely challenging parts! All are doing great now as am I.” In July 2020, Jeffrey Price ‘85 launched Word Collections, which works for comedians and spoken word performers to license and collect royalties from digital and radio broadcast, interactive audio streams, streaming video on social media platforms, and more. Dear Burke Community, The 2020-21 school year brought many profound challenges, from the ongoing global pandemic to the devastating impact of long-standing racial injustice, and a polarizing political landscape. At each turn, I have been stuck by the resilience and fortitude of our Burke family. None of us could have imagined what the next month, week, or day could bring, but through it all, the Burke community stood together in support of one another and of our school as a whole. Faculty and staff were creative, compassionate and steady in their approach, constantly pivoting to ensure that students thrived and felt met in both in-person and remote learning spaces. Parents worked hand-in-hand with the administration to support the happiness and success of our students in an ever-changing landscape. And through all of this, you stood beside Burke when we called. Because of the outpouring of generosity from this community, we have much to be proud of and to celebrate. As you know, at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, we celebrated the successful conclusion of the historic $6 million Stand with Burke comprehensive campaign. I am pleased to report that after years of anticipation, we are actively in the process of renovating several spaces in our original building, Mooskin-Roth Hall, which was made possible by this campaign. We anticipate a completion date in January for the first phase of the project, and are thrilled that these spaces will now better meet the needs of our community and will truly reflect the excellence of our programs. In December of 2020, Burke held its first annual Day of Giving. Not only did our community rally to more than double our participation goal by mid-day, unlocking an initial $15,000 challenge gift, but together we unlocked a second $10,000 challenge gift as well as 10 individual challenge matches for each class, alumni, and grandparents. When the clock struck midnight, over $91,000 was raised! Though circumstances prevented us from gathering in person this past April for our annual Auction for Financial Aid, the Development team and a dedicated group of volunteers turned the usual event into a delightfully whimsical and retro virtual celebration. It was such a joy to see hundreds of members of our current and past community “tune in” to Burke at Nite and raise their (virtual) paddles high, delivering Burke’s highest-grossing live auction ever and raising more than $330,000 total for Financial Aid — a school record! During one of the most difficult years imaginable, Burke remained Burke because you continued to believe in the powerful work that happens here and understood the importance of continuing to stand beside us, even as the world around us shifted. Burke also thrived during such a challenging period because of the steadfast and caring leadership of Head of School Damian Jones. For nearly eight years, Damian has served as an inspirational leader, stewarding the school through both joyful milestones and achievements and tumultuous times, all the while strengthening Burke’s commitment to our mission. As the sun sets on this, Damian’s final year at Burke, I know that you will join me in expressing gratitude to Damian and celebrating his exceptional contributions to the Burke Community. This fall, the Board of Trustees began a national search for Burke’s next Head of School. Though we will move through a period of transition ahead, I am confident that Damian has paved the way for Burke’s next Head to continue to build upon his legacy and guide Burke through our sixth decade and beyond. On behalf of all of us at Burke, I cannot fully express our gratitude for the Parents, Alumni, Grandparents, Faculty, Staff, and Friends whose names fill the following pages — representing an incredible outpouring of care and support for our shared Burke home, even in the face of a global crisis. Thank you for all of the ways in which you continue to support our school. I can’t wait to see what we’ll do together next!

In partnership, Sharon Davis P’19 President, Board of Trustees

CLASS OF 2021 FAMILY GIFT It has been a longstanding tradition that the families of the graduating class join together in support of a special class fundraising effort in commemoration of their students’ accomplishments and in recognition of what Burke has meant to them.

Burke TOGETHER:

As 2021 senior parents reflected on what their gift to Burke might be, they agreed that their class had been an incredibly supportive and tight-knit community. Whether they’d been at Burke since the 6th grade, or were seamlessly welcomed in later, each child was an incredibly important member of the Class of 2021, and they always had each other’s backs.

With this in mind, parents of the Class of 2021 knew that the perfect way to honor this class would be to ensure that there were physical spaces inside the building for future Burke students to gather to laugh, to share their aspirations, to support one another and to have important conversations, as the Class of 2021 did. With a generous matching gift challenge of $5,000, class parents raised nearly $20,000 to support the construction of new vignettes of built-in seating in hallways in the atrium and in nooks throughout the school building. Congratulations, and thank you to the Class of 2021 graduates and their families!

Not only did we more than double our participation goal by mid-day, unlocking an initial $15,000 challenge grant from Kira Swencki and Mike Mihalke P’22, but together we unlocked a second $10,000 challenge grant from Board President Sharon Davis and Jeff Davis P’19, as well as 10 individual challenge matches for each class, alumni, and grandparents. When the clock struck midnight, over $91,000 was raised. We are so grateful to our Burke family for standing TOGETHER with us during our inaugural Day of Giving event. We may have been confined to the Zoom grid, but we worked hard to turn our usual Auction

event on its head and were thrilled to see hundreds of members of our community (past and present) “tune in” to Burke at Nite for a joyful and record-breaking celebration! You raised your (virtual) paddles high, signed on for sponsorships, donated to and bid in our online and live auctions — and more — delivering Burke’s highest-grossing live auction ever and raising more than $330,000 total for Financial Aid — a school record! From the Burke-y Bunch to you: thank you! During one of the most difficult years in our collective history — a year when many families’ need for financial support was greater than ever — we are so incredibly grateful to all of the members of the Burke community who stood up for what Burke stands for.

Our Mission

Burke consciously brings together students who are different from one another in many ways, actively engages them in their own education, holds them to high expectations, gives them power and responsibility, and supports and advances their growth as skilled and independent thinkers who step forward to make positive contributions to the world in which they live.

Equity and Inclusion at Burke

Burke respects the dignity and humanity of our students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and trustees, as well as our broader community. We embrace a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We strive to cultivate understanding and appreciation of diversity that includes, but is not limited to, age, ability, ethnicity, family structure, gender, gender identity, political perspectives, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. We acknowledge and encourage differences of opinions, ideas, and interests, and we expect thoughtful discussion and civil engagement.

44 \\ 1968 the Edmund Burke School Magazine Burke affirms individual worth of all community members, and we challenge behaviors that demean, marginalize, or exclude others. Our goal is to maintain a diverse school community that exemplifies these values and to fulfill our commitment to equity and inclusion consistently in all areas of school and community life.
