Elitac Wearables have done exactly that, providing the Royal Netherlands Army with the first order of their new Mission Navigation Belt. The Mission Navigation Belt (MNB) allows soldiers to feel waypoint navigation directions through small, quiet vibration motors, located in a lightweight belt worn around the waist. The order is part of a wider initiative by the Netherlands Ministry of Defense to improve situational awareness and survivability through the application of new technologies. Traditional navigation compromises situational awareness because it requires soldiers to take their focus away from their surroundings to check screens or maps, or listen to audio instructions. The Mission Navigation Belt solves this problem by conveying navigation cues through haptic feedback and the underutilised sense of touch. This way, it frees up soldiers’ hands, eyes and ears to concentrate on their surroundings. The MNB was developed by haptic feedback specialists Elitac Wearables in close collaboration with the Netherlands Ministry of Defense. Major Van Veen, of the Royal Netherlands Army Defence Centre of Expertise for Soldier and Equipment, explained: “Modern soldiers have access to incredible, hi-tech navigation systems, but these all require soldiers to keep checking their screens constantly. This makes an already dangerous job even more dangerous because it reduces situational awareness.”

The Mission Navigation Belt was developed to address this problem: “It has proved its value convincingly during field tests: Soldiers reported that they were more aware of their surroundings and found the navigational cues very intuitive. And because it plugs into our own soldier system, there is no learning curve or need for an additional battery. We look forward to implementing this order of belts and investigating other possible applications of the MNB.”, Major Van Veen said. The MNB can be used to navigate on foot and in vehicles both on land and water: Soldiers can change seamlessly from one mode of transportation to another without stopping to navigate. Merijn Klarenbeek, CEO and co-founder of Elitac Wearables said “After multiple years of joint testing and development with the Netherlands Ministry of Defense, we delivered the first order of the finished product today. The Mission Navigation Belt is fully compatible and interoperable with the VOSS system (the improved operational soldier system developed for the Netherlands Ministry of Defense). Its design really pushes the boundaries when it comes to integrating electronics and textiles, as the belt had to be robust, comfortable, and, most importantly, reliable. The field tests conducted by the Royal Netherlands Army demonstrate that we have indeed achieved that. It is rewarding to think that our wearables will help keep soldiers safer”.

Haptic feedback is the use of touch to communicate with users. GO PACK The S.O.Tech Go Bag series came from a friend in one of JSOC’s Tier units. They were operating in Afghanistan and Iraq crammed in Hi Luxes and Little Birds. They needed a survival kit bag that could slide in and stack in those compact spaces and extract when the troop came into contact. The original tubular bag with single sling shoulder strap had three small zippered pockets for batteries, food, NODS, and other items. When the same troops needed to transport their weapons quietly, we extended the length to accommodate the M4 broken down and extended the side pouches to take mags. Breaking the carbine down and stacking its components presented a a tubular shape that confused any surveillance team looking for weapons bags. The design was quickly adapted by teams across the Interagency. And the third iteration was the S.O.Tech Go Pack where we created a double shoulder strap version for those guys carrying such a heavy load that the sling shoulder strap just wasn’t enough. However, we configured it in a unique arrangement so the double shoulder strap could connect for form a single sling strap for lighted load. All of these designs allowed for the quick donning motion of throwing it over the head and shoulder, and the easy access by spinning it around.

MORE THAN 45 YEARS AGO, NASA WAS INTERESTED IN DEVELOPING A SOLAR SIMULATOR FOR THE SPACE PROGRAM TO SIMULATE SUNLIGHT OUTSIDE THE FILTERING OF THE ATMOSPHERE. A GROUP OF ENGINEERS SET UP A LABORATORY IN FAIRFIELD, NJ, AND DESIGNED A PRODUCT THAT GENERATED 25 MILLION CANDLEPOWER OF LIGHT. THE TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED DURING THIS RESEARCH WAS SUBSEQUENTLY USED TO DESIGN AND DEVELOP A HANDHELD UNIT THAT PRODUCED ONE MILLION CANDLEPOWER AND THAT WAS SOLD TO THE MILITARY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT MARKET SECTORS.

Upon completion of the NASA project and perfection of the miniaturized one million candlepower design, a private investor from the Philadelphia area moved the company to King of Prussia, PA and, in 1973, created the company that today is known as Streamlight, Inc. The research and development begun in New Jersey was greatly expanded, and in 1977, the company moved its headquarters and production facilities to Norristown, PA. 1 TLR-8 STREAMLIGHT Ultra lightweight & compact, this rugged lithium battery powered LED weapon light with integrated red laser fits most hand guns and long guns. The TLR-8 A and TLR 8 A G feature a power LED that delivers 5,000 candela and 500 lumens over a beam distance of 140 meters. The TLR-8 A offers a 640-660nm red laser to maximize visibility and long-range targeting capability, while the TLR-8 A G features a 510-520nm “Eye Safe” green laser to improve users’ ability to focus on targets during daylight hours. TLR RANGE Streamlight’s TLR range has been their premium weapon mounted tactical lighting range for a while now, with a number of products sitting under the TLR umbrella. The range covers a wide variety of different weapon mounted lights, all designed to be used in conjunction with a variety of different firearms; provided they have picatinny rails attached. If the truth be told, each product in the TLR range hold up against its competitors, but with such a vast number of products in the range, it would be impossible to feature them all in a single article. However, with that said, in January 2020, Streamlight updated a number of products, as well as releasing a range of other products onto the market. This month, we’ll be taking a look at both of those developments within the Streamlight range, and hopefully bringing you some more indepth features in the very near future.
STREAMLIGHT UPDATE TLR MODELS In January 2020, Streamlight announced it has improved the output of four of its TLR® high lumen (HL) gun-mounted lights, including the TLR-1 HL®; the TLR-2 HL®; the TLR-2 HL® G, and the TLR-1 HPL®. Each model now delivers 1,000 lumens of blinding white light.

The enhanced TLR models can be quickly and safely attached to most weapons, without the need for users to put their hands in front of the muzzle. They mount directly to all MIL-STD-1913 (Picatinny) rails and handguns with Glock-style rails, and offer highly accurate sight repeatability when remounting. Gatorz began, like many eyewear companies, producing products for high-velocity sports, mainly centred around the world of motorcycles. Their first product was an aluminium framed sunglasses, capable of withstanding riding at any speed, while maintaining the comfort factor – and looking good in the process. In 2002, Bobro Engineering began working with a California special purpose laser manufacturer. Bobro was contracted to produce the design of high output laser arrays and to engineer the instruments used in the manufacture of the lasers. Bobro was further contracted to design and build critical assemblies ranging from index systems for electron beam guns, to tiny fixtures made from platinum used in the assembly of semi conductors. Additionally, Bobro has produced specialised articles such as toxic waste containment interfaces and metrology equipment.
FORWARD GRIP ASSEMBLY The Bobro Engineering front grip is designed to serve many applications past the conventional use of these devices. Ideally, it is to be used in conjunction with a sling. Bobro started with a revolutionary (Patent Pending) attachment method that utilises opposing forces in a diagonal plane to secure the unit. The mechanism is self-aligning, and is installed on the host weapon as follows.

Rotate the drive wheel until the driver plate is allowed to retract under spring pressure. Push the grip assembly onto the rail when the rail is between the two outer locking walls (at approximately 45 degrees) then rotate the unit until a tactile engagement is felt. Then, simply rotate the lock wheel until it stops. It is now totally secure. Due to an internal compression bearing design, it remains secure throughout firing and use. To maximise the potential of the grip, a sling is used to augment its abilities to provide a super secure attachment point for virtually endless configurations in unconventional shooting applications.

FAST COG SERIES MOUNT FAST™ is a series of optic mounts and platforms that provide end users with a quicker sight picture than standard height mounts. It provides faster/easier reticle acquisition while wearing armor, electronic ear-pro/communications headsets, night vision goggles and gas masks and allows for more rapid visual processing of the battlefield by promoting a heads-up posture. A heads-up posture also helps users maintain a neutral spine position which is more comfortable while wearing heavy gear. The FAST™ COG Series Mount was developed to universally accept the Trijicon Combat Optical Gunsight double and triple screw interfaces. It covers both ACOG and VCOG series scopes, placing the optical centerline at 2.05″ above the rail. With the Carmel demonstration, IAI has developed and proven a combat concept in which an AFV, with closed hatches, is operated by a two-man man crew and can successfully cope with existing and future challenges on the battlefield. This solution is based on automatic and autonomous systems that complement the two-man team, and operate the central subsystems – the vehicles’ mission planning and management, situational awareness, driving and lethality. These capabilities allow the team to define, supervise and interfere only when there is a necessity or need, and enables to cover a wider area of concern while effectively meeting the challenges faced by the manoeuvring forces. The system has the ability to locate and destroy time-sensitive targets with small footprints, through quick acquisition and effective engagement of targets. TT MEDIC ASSAULT PACK MKII L Announced recently, Tasmanian Tiger’s new ‘Medic Assault Pack MKII L’, to give it its full designation, is the largest TT backpack designed specifically for medical use. Designed to incorporate an intelligent interior divider system, the latest medical offering from Tasmanian Tiger comes in around 4cm larger than the two previous models. The TT Medic Assault Pack MKII L has laser-cut MOLLE on the front and sides and a large handle for carrying when open. The bottom features attachments ideal for storing a rescue blanket. The light, padded shoulder strap carrying system can be removed and stowed in a pocket with hook-and-loop panels in the back if needed. These length adjustable stowable shoulder straps also make carrying large body armour possible.
