SYSTEMS 1 ELBIT SHORTLISTED FOR ARMY LAND125 PHASE 4 Elbit Systems of Australia (ELSA) has been shortlisted for Land125 Phase 4 Integrated Soldier System (ISS). The fourth phase of the Commonwealth program to modernise the ADF’s Soldier Combat System (SCS), is seeking an industry partner for the supply and support of an ISS capability that would enable continuous growth of the current and future SCS. Elbit Systems of Australia Managing Director, Major General (ret’d) Paul McLachlan AO, CSC said the shortlisting demonstrated the company’s commitment to continue to work with defence on the provision of capability that would increase the effectiveness of Australian soldiers. “I am very pleased to announce our progress to the limited RFT stage for Land 125 Phase 4 for the ISS, which is indicative of our continued commitment to produce world-leading soldier systems from global technology using an upskilled sovereign workforce here in Australia,” Mr McLachlan said. “Recently, at the biggest trade show on the defence calendar, Land Forces 21, we showcased our next-generation technologies, which saw hundreds of visitors to our stand experience live on-the-spot demonstrations of our world-leading technology and innovative products. “Those leading-edge technologies increase effectiveness via situational awareness, mobility, lethality, survivability and sustainability to ensure mission success for the Australian Defence Force, while protecting the lives of ADF personnel.” “Not only do we have ability to access, adapt and apply global technology right here in Australia, we opened our new Centre of Excellence in Melbourne earlier this year, which will conduct research and development with academic and industry partners to develop highly-advanced autonomous solutions to build home-grown capabilities to complement our existing suite of soldier solutions,” Mr McLachlan said.

2 BLACKHAWK ANNOUNCE NEW FOUNDATION RANGE BLACKHAWK! recently previewed their new ‘Foundation’ line of tactical nylon at the 2021 TSSI NCRE. Marketed as an affordable option for LE active shooter applications as well as armed citizens in the United States. To cut costs, the Foundation line is currently being manufactured in Vietnam, however there will be Berry compliant versions available for those who need it. On show at TSSI NCRE 2021 was a laser-cut system made from 500D and 1000D laminate, accompanied with a range of multi-fit pouches including a magazine pouch, pistol magazine pouch and a medical/utility type pouch.

LLC 3 OUTERIMPACT, ACQUIRES ADVANTAGE TACTICAL SIGHTS OuterImpact, LLC., the creator of the Modular Red Dot Adapter (M.R.A.) is excited to announce the successful acquisition of Advantage Tactical Sights (ATS), the innovator of firearm sighting systems, such as the Dark Diamond and the Pyramid Sights. OuterImpact owner Roy Chester had this to say: “We have had a relationship with Advantage Tactical Sights for many years, producing some of the sights components and assisting with other areas of the company, so bringing the two companies together was an easy choice. We look forward to offering new and existing customers these unique options as a firearm sighting system. I have had sets of Pyramid sights on all my everyday carry handguns for many years and am a big fan of this type of sight.” ATS sights differentiate themselves from other sight systems by giving the shooter more target visibility and a more intuitive alignment platform. Including the Firefly Glow sights, this allows up to 35 different colour combinations in the master kit, to best suit the users preferences. The sight system also allows users to adjust the front sight elevation for maximum accuracy.

THRUDARK ARE A COMPANY CREATED BY TWO RETIRED OPERATORS SERVING WITHIN THE UNITED KINGDOM’S SPECIAL FORCES. AFTER A COMBINED 18 YEARS’ OF SERVICE WITHIN THE SBS, THRUDARK WAS CREATED, LOOKING TO APPLY A VAST AMOUNT OF EXPERIENCE WITH THE HIGHEST SPECIFICATION KIT AND CLOTHING EACH FOUNDING MEMBER HAD, AND SIMPLY IMPROVE ON IT. HAVING SPENT NUMEROUS YEARS AT THE TIP OF THE SPEAR, THRUDARK’S FOUNDERS WERE MORE THAN AWARE OF THE SHORTCOMINGS OF SOME OF THE EQUIPMENT THEY USED, WITH A CRITICAL MINDSET FORMED IN REGARD TO THE WAY IT PERFORMED IN A MULTITUDE OF ENVIRONMENTS.

012

This has given ThruDark an advantage, with the company being well aware of what works and what doesn’t – stripping away the excess on a product to leave the end-user with a product that performs admirably in its intended AO. This ensures that the end-user can simply enjoy the elements and concentrate on the task at hand, with no inkling of doubt placed in the clothing that is being utilised. From the design process to the materials used, ThruDark meticulously negotiate each hurdle with the utmost of attention paid. In regard to material selection, ThruDark’s co-founders ensure that only the best materials are utilised. Following this, each product goes through an advanced prototyping system, with each garment tested in all weather extremes to ascertain its overall functional capability. From here, ThruDark return to the prototype, ensuring that any issues that were raised are addressed, and any fabric changes are realised. This process then repeats until ThruDark are entirely happy with the outcome. At this point, the prototype is shipped to Italy; a company renowned for its manufacturing capabilities, and produced for use.

THRUDARK HERITAGE CAMOUFLAGE LINER

Each ThruDark product comes with their proprietary, patented, in-house designed camouflage liner. With years of operational duty as a Special Forces sniper instructor, ThruDark co-founder ‘Staz CGC’ was able to design a unique brand identity in the Heritage Camouflage Liner. The ThruDark camouflage makes use of a number of different elements, including wolf hair, water and stone, each of which has been blended together to create a truly unique camouflage print.

MATERIALS

■ CERASPACE™

The outstanding Ceraspace™ technology from Schoeller® owes its outstanding protective properties to a unique composition of special ceramic particles anchored in a polymer matrix. The special ceramic particles are nearly as hard as diamonds and are firmly attached as a 3-dimensional coating to the textile, making it a completely abrasion-proof protective fabric – perfect for the demanding environments the end-user may find themselves in.

■ DYNEEMA ™

Dyneema® is the trade name given to fibers made with high molecular weight polyethylene. Its properties, such as its strength, lightness, versatility and resistance to chemical and abrasive, agents, make it an ideal yarn for high performance technical fabrics.Dyneema® brand has become a benchmark yarn for this type of fibers, lighter than any other similar yarn on the market and being constantly improved through R&D.

■ PERTEX® QUANTUM PRO

By combining a tightly woven face fabric with a microporous coating, Pertex® Quantum Pro delivers a very high level of water resistance whilst remaining lightweight, soft and breathable. The increased weather resistance and durable construction means these fabrics are ideal for use in cold or damp environments where keeping warm and dry is crucial. ■ Highly water resistant ■ Durable construction ■ Maximises the thermal efficiency of insulation

TECHNOLOGIES USED

■ THE COHAESIVE SYSTEM

The Cohæsive™ System embeds functional components into the fabric of a garment. It includes an engineered adhesive, tools and procedures to install the world’s best cord management hardware. The cordlock redefined. Every detail has been scrutinised to provide the best experience for design teams, factories, and above all… the end user. ■ Direct grip, easy one-handed adjustments ■ Covertly installed components make the technology almost invisible ■ Embedded components become as strong as the fabric around them

■ DIRECT VENTING™

Breathable shelter from the storm. At eVent, they believe that waterproof/breathable should also mean dry and comfortable. eVent fabrics was the first to engineer and use patented Direct Venting technology so rain can’t get in but sweat can get out instantly. ■ Highly water proof ■ Wind proof ■ Extremely breathable

■ RESCUE TECHNOLOGY

Be searchable: In case of avalanches and emergencies or if lost in the outdoors, RECCO rescue reflectors make you searchable by organised rescue teams searching with RECCO detectors. RECCO Technology is not a substitute for an avalanche transceiver. ■ Search ■ Detect ■ Rescue

BEARCAT Looking to best serve their userbase, Polish-based Direct Action have invested in the necessary understanding of the needs of various operators across the globe. Combining this knowledge with a design ethos centred around providing top-of-the-range products and high quality manufacturing capabilities, Direct Action have created a range of equipment that serves the modern warfighter in any and all situations. Every detail has been rigourously thought out from a systemic perspective, with no random design choices, no compromises made, and no shying away from new technology that has entered the marketplace. Each part of the Direct Action system has been designed in a way that it perfectly combines with various other items in their product range. This has allowed Direct Action to realise their mission statement of creating products that complement weapons systems, load baring equipment, backpacks, jackets and duty uniforms, with each composite part creating a bigger picture that as a whole allows for improved operating power, leading to the successful completion of the end users mission.

018

The new BEARCAT offers a completely redesigned approach to the age-old plate carrier. Minimalistic and lightweight, the BEARCAT is a versatile plate carrier constructed from a 4-way elasticated nylon. Simple in design, the BEARCAT makes use of a skeletonised, laser-cut modular system on the chest area to allow the end-user to attach a plethora of small pouches and to stabilise PTTs. Hidden under the laminate panels on the chest area lies a set of ITW Nexus GTSR buckles for mounting additional flaps and chest rigs. The flat, low profile shoulder straps come with tunnelled areas to allow the end-user to place the cables of a quick-release system. Furthermore, the shoulder straps come equipped with elastic loops for other cables, antennas or hydration tubes. In addition, there are more elastic loops on the sides of the front plate to stabilise cables and antenna further should a radio be stored in Direct Action’s Comm Wings (sold separately). On the upper part of the backplate there is another skeletonised modular system as well as an integrated drag handle. On the sides lies two zippers that allow the assembly of back panels, including those from Direct Action’s SPITFIRE system. In order to minimise weight, the back of the BEARCAT isn’t laden with any extra materials such as Velcro.

MODULAR PACK 30 AS A PREMIUM SUPPLIER OF PROFESSIONAL MILITARY AND POLICE EQUIPMENT, ALL TASMANIAN TIGER PRODUCTS INCORPORATE THE VERY BEST IN QUALITY, PAIRED WITH INCREDIBLE FUNCTIONALITY. THIS IS ACHIEVED THROUGH A RIGOROUS DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING PROCESS, WITH COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENT WORK UNDERTAKEN BASED ON THE SPECIFIC NEEDS AND REQUIREMENTS OF THE END-USER.

From prototype to series production, all products are manufactured in the company’s own production facilities. This ensures that a consistently high level of quality is maintained. Every step in the production process, from purchasing materials to manufacture to the final checks, is precisely defined and checked regularly by independent test centres to international standards. Every product is checked before it leaves production and is given a serial number that is then stored in the company’s own database. You can rely on Tasmanian Tiger products – anywhere, any time. The Tasmanishe Tiger – also known as the Tasmanian Wolf – was the largest carnivorous marsupial on the Australian continent. It was about the size of a small wolf and owes its name “TASMANIAN TIGER” to its striped coat which served as camouflage. The animal was a predator – not very fast but extremely persevering – and followed up on its prey at night, chasing it down until it was exhausted so it could finally snatch it. Equipped with a superior set of teeth and a mouth which it could open up to 180 degrees, the animal showed no mercy for its prey. The Tasmanian Tiger is said to be extinct on the Australian continent since the 1930s; the last species lived on the island of Tasmania. In 1966, a large sanctuary for animals had been opened so as to provide them with a retreat area, and to preserve the species in this way. Until today, no Tasmanian Tiger has any longer been sighted, but quite a few people believe that the animal has managed to survive in this sanctuary, having escaped discovery until today… In this mythical legend, the specific attributes of the animal – will to survive, hunting instinct, perfect camouflage, cleverness, strength and perseverance – manifest itself. These attributes have prompted the company to give their products the name Tasmanian Tiger.

TT MODULAR PACK 30 Finding the right backpack can often be a pain in the proverbial backside; especially if you’re looking for something that won’t destroy your body after long periods of use. Over time, a wide array of different backpacks have come through the Gear Up office, ranging from period items such as the iconic Vietnam ‘Tropical Rucksack’, through to British Army issue Bergens and variants from a number of outdoor companies. With each example that came through the office, hours of use entailed, which quite often included long distance running with a weighted pack or hikes through the Peak District. With this has come somewhat of an understanding of how painful the ‘wrong’ pack can be, having suffered from all sorts of chaffing – with some accounts of drawing blood, along with excruciating back pain. However, that’s not to say all backpacks lead to this, in fact, the vast majority don’t cause injury aside from some unpleasant rubbing, but that is, quite frankly, part and parcel of running around with upwards of 30kg in a backpack. Until recently though, I didn’t necessarily have a favourite when it came to a backpack to use for my general, day-to-day fitness work. For a long time, I was a huge advocate of the Triple Aught Design Litespeed, having owned one for a long period of time, but it certainly isn’t designed for strenuous exercise; mainly due to it lacking a hip-belt to keep it secure. Warrior Assault Systems’ X300 Pack was also a huge favourite, but at 55L, it was far too big for general day-to-day road running. However, recently I’ve had the opportunity to get to grips with a few Tasmanian Tiger products, and I now have a new favourite in the Modular Pack 30. By designation, the Modular Pack 30 is a 30L combat backpack designed to fit a range of different items, lending itself well to the military world, and in turn, the airsoft world. Manufactured from a 700D CORDURA®, the Modular Pack 30 weighs in at 1.65KG. In terms of size, we’re pretty certain the Modular Pack 30 sits in that perfect sweetspot between smaller everyday backpacks and larger products such as the X300, with measurements coming in at 58 x 27 x 18 CM – essentially putting the pack level with the nape when worn. The pack itself is adorned with laser-cut MOLLE, allowing great opportunity for scalability – I personally added a simple Nalgene

022

Water-bottle pouch to the side to allow for easier access – and the top of the pack incorporates a laced section, great for storing a raincoat or FAST-type helmet. Looking towards the back of the pack, Tasmanian Tiger have chosen to make use of S-shaped shoulder straps which curve to the body fairly well, and you also have access to two hip fins (not a belt, these detach as two separate pieces), which have zipped pockets running the entire length, which we found great for a Smartphone, but would fit a range of different items. The back itself is also completely padded, and I found it to fit perfectly to the curvature of my back, providing brilliant support through a removable backrest pad which makes use of an aluminium rod. Furthermore, there are two pull-tabs which can be used to compress the backpack should you need to do so. Opening the Modular Pack 30 up – done so via clamshell zipper, you have access to a rather sizable main compartment that is lined with laser-cut MOLLE, covered in Velcro. The pack already comes with a selection of accessories which attach to this system (3 accessory pouches and 1 weapon holster), but it will accept a range of aftermarket products. Furthermore, a separate meshed pocket is located on the tail of the inner compartment, great for any important items due to its easily accessible nature. On top of this, the pack also offers antenna ports into the main compartment, found on both the upper left and the upper right, which would also accommodate a hydration hose, although a bladder pouch would have to be attached to the aforementioned MOLLE. Finally, a second compartment can be found in the lid, which is deceivingly big, and a third compartment is found on the front of the pack, almost hidden in a crease – likely to be used as a map pouch.

THE FINAL VERDICT One thing that readers have been asking for recently is a final verdict when it comes to the equipment covered, especially due to the expensive price-point a lot of these products sit in. So, with that in mind, the Modular Pack 30 has been attached to my back as much as possible recently. Obviously, bear in mind that these opinions are from a fitness point of view at a time where COVID-19 restrictions are in place.

The Tasmanian Tiger Modular Pack 30 is a 30L pack with three storage sections. The main compartment is accessible via a clamshell opening, revealing a large opening for storage. Furthermore, the end-user has access to two other compartments – one found on the front of the pack, and the other on the top.

1

1

To provide support, the Tasmanian Tiger Modular Pack 30 comes complete with a sternum strap and hip belt, both of which provide a brilliant platform to reduce movement of the pack. Furthermore, should the end-user wish to not use the hip belt, it is easily removable.

2

To allow for scalability, the Tasmanian Tiger Modular Pack 30 is lined with laser-cut MOLLE, found on the front and sides of the pack. Furthermore, the Modular Pack 30 lends itself well to storing either a communications package or a hydration bladder, thanks to ports found on the left and right of the pack.

3

When the main compartment is opened, the end-user will find a plethora of storage options. Firstly, the laser-cut MOLLE approach used on the outside of the pack is replicated inside, this time cut into a Velcro material. Additionally, the pack comes complete with a weapon holster, found on both the left and the right of the pack.

4

3

To round off the storage options available in the Modular Pack 30, Tasmanian Tiger provide the end-user with three hook-and-loop fastening accessories pouches. These pouches are essentially General Purpose pouches which attach via hook-and-loop (Velcro) fastenings.

Honestly, it has been a while since I’ve been this excited about a tactical product. Fitness is a huge part of my daily regimen, and even more so recently with the only way of getting outside being through exercise, and in turn, weighted runs have been something I’ve done for a good number of years now. For a long period of time, I tended to go out running in a plate carrier, which was fine when living in the rural backdrop the Gear Up office is located, but having recently moved into a big city, some of the looks I receive are questionable, so I transitioned to using a backpack for any weighted runs. But this came with a few teething problems. A lot of the backpacks I used just were not fit for purpose, either missing stability through a hip belt, or chaffing in problem areas. And honestly, the Modular Pack 30 has alleviated, if not completely removed these issues. I’ve been putting about 20KG worth of weights into the Modular Pack 30 (done so through a mixture of Travail Fitness Plates and simple weight plates) and I’m having next to no issues with the weight whatsoever. The backpack seems to effortlessly distribute the weight across the back, with the only pain following use radiating in the trapizus (shoulders) – although that is to be expected. There has been no real issues with rubbing; not to say there has been no rubbing, but when wearing at least two layers, the rubbing has been minimal, which is mainly due to the clever adjustment system the backpack makes use of. All in all, the Modular Pack 30 from Tasmanian Tiger is a great example of a backpack, and I’m pretty down heartened that it’s a review sample and I don’t get to keep hold of it!

ASSAULTER BELT SYSTEM

The GBRS GROUP Assaulter Belt System, was designed and developed by Tier One Operators and made in USA by LBT INC, to fulfil the needs and requirements of Special Operators, Military, Law Enforcement and those that demand the most from their equipment. Most operator or gun outer belts use multiple layers of rigid materials sewn together with a lightweight and flimsy webbing or binding material to attach equipment to. This typically results in an uncomfortable and overly thick belt with equipment being secured to a loose and sloppy field. The GBRS GROUP Assaulter Belt System utilizes a 2-layer outer belt to create a lightweight, flexible yet rigid and stable platform to attach equipment, holsters and accessories. This is done by using Type 13, 1-23/32” belt webbing (7000 lbs tensile strength) as the base, with a field of PALS webbing, laser cut from a semi rigid woven thermo-polymer (patent pending). This ensures that your equipment is always secured to something rigid, while allowing the belt to remain lightweight and comfortable. To round it off, we double “W” stitch the webbing to a load rated, 1.75” Austrialpin Cobra buckle with a D-ring for attaching helo lanyards and other equipment. The outer belt has an inner facing of “loop” style Velcro, to attach to a low profile “hook” inner belt. We did this because hook should never be worn towards body, especially in such a high wear area (belt line).

W W W.GEARUP-MAG.COM

20/07/2021 11:49

THE INNER BELT SYSTEM IS ACTUALLY 2 PARTS. IT CONSISTS OF A LOW PROFILE “HOOK” INNER BELT AND A “SHROUD” TO COVER THE INNER BELT WHEN THE OUTER ASSAULT BELT IS NOT IN USE. THIS RESULTS IN A SYSTEM THAT NOT ONLY DOUBLES AS A NON-METALLIC EDC BELT, BUT IT IS A COMFORTABLE AND CONVENIENT WAY TO COVER THE SCRATCHY HOOK PORTION OF THE INNER BELT. WHEN THE OUTER BELT IS NEEDED, SIMPLY REMOVE THE INNER BELT SHROUD, AND ATTACH THE OUTER ASSAULTER BELT TO THE INNER BELT.

Viper Tactical have slowly grown an empire within the British scene and have largely gone under the radar of many who gravitate to good quality tactical equipment at affordable prices. We will hold no punches, Viper Tactical are by no means to be held to the same manufacturing standards of Arc’teryx, or the same fabric control as Crye Precision, but neither do they try to market themselves in the same tier of tactical equipment. Viper Tactical, until now, have offered a range of equipment that offers a cost-effective alternative to its more expensive counterparts. Built under the Thatchreed umbrella, Viper Tactical have grown into a company that have slowly begun to knock on the door of greater things. Viper Tactical have been involved in the military and outdoor markets for over a decade, and now offer a range of expertise within the field; combining the experience, knowledge and resources that a decade worth of feedback has offered. In doing so, they have now reached a point in which they can offer a fantastic product range that is manufactured from a range of high-quality materials, and most importantly, doing so in a cost-effective way to offer products at a competitive price-point. Having been constantly evolving their brand year on year, Viper Tactical have been able to stay up to date with the market, ensuring their products are compatible with the latest in military developments, such as their proprietary V-Cam camouflage that colour matches to MultiCam.

VENOM BOOT

Previously we mentioned that until now, Viper Tactical had offered cost-effective alternatives to their more expensive counterparts. However, with the recent release of the new Venom Boot, that may well have changed, and Viper Tactical may have released a product that can stand head-to-head with the competitors. The Viper Venom Boot brings comfort, performance and fresh design together to give you the best experience while trekking, hiking or performing any tactical tasks. Years of experience in boot production taught them that a good pair of lightweight boots go a long way. To provide support for the end-users feet the boots have been designed using internal nylon stabiliser shank, moulded TPU heel stabiliser and integrated EVA midsole. This combined technology helps to tackle rough and uneven ground. To further extend the performance of the boots, Viper Tactical have used an aggressive rubber outsole with multidirectional grip to help reduce the possibility of slipping on wet terrain. The Viper Tactical Venom Boot is manufactured from a range of high-quality materials, including the use of a 1000-denier Cordura material on the upper, providing unrivalled protection when put under constant use. Furthermore, a moisture wicking lining ensures that the end-user doesn’t find any annoying rubbing due to the build-up of sweat.

Warrior Assault Systems was founded in the United Kingdom in 2005, with an onus placed on functionality, durability and overall weight reduction, their product range has enhanced the operational capabilities of the modern warfighter around the world.

WARRIOR GLOVES

Warrior Assault Systems currently offer three different pairs of gloves – the Enforcer, the Firestorm and the Omega. Both the Enforcer and Firestorm are fairly similar in regards to design and materials used, while the Omega are their latest offering and are in fact so new that all three colour-ways are yet to be listed on their website.

Warrior Assault Systems’ product range includes a variety of cutting edge tactical equipment, all manufactured to the highest standard using certified mil-spec materials sourced from the United States. Warrior Assault Systems is a brand you can place your trust in, having been tried and tested in the most intense and critical of environments; the theatre of war. With a product range that includes a variety of equipment that has been designed and developed following direct input from serving Tier-1 assets following deployment in theatres such as Iraq and Afghanistan, it comes as no surprise that Warrior Assault Systems has fast become a mainstay in tactical excellence, with dealers found in 28 different countries. By using Warrior Assault System equipment, you are investing in equipment that has been battle tested by the world’s finest modern warfighters.

034

Both the Enforcer and the Firestorm are constructed from DuPont fire-resistant Nomex, which has been matched with a premium quality leather hide. This leather is soft, durable and hard wearing for use in the harshest of environments. Both the fingers and palms are protected with raised padding to offer the end-user additional protection. Furthermore, all key areas have been reinforced with double stitching to prevent any unnecessary failures. The Omega is Warrior Assault Systems’ latest glove, released with the introduction of the company’s new website. Warrior’s Omega glove is far removed from the Enforcer and Firestorm, and clearly shows the evolution the company has gone through over the last half-decade. The Omega is manufactured using a range of materials across the various sections of the glove. The main material in use is a spandex fabric to allow for a greater range of movement while wearing the glove. This has been coupled with a synthetic leather palm, a neoprene cuff and a nylon polymer knuckle. Furthermore, the Omega is touch screen compatible on the index finger and thumb.

THE NEW RANGE FINDING BINOCULARS CONTINUE BUSHNELL’S 25-YEAR LEGACY OF LASER RANGEFINDER DEVELOPMENT WHILE FEATURING 1 MILE RANGING CAPABILITY PLUS AN ALL-NEW ACTIVSYNC™ DISPLAY SYSTEM THAT FLUIDLY MORPHS FROM BLACK TO RED READOUTS BASED ON LIGHTING CONDITIONS. THESE FULL-SIZE 10×42 BINOCULARS NOT ONLY FEATURE THE HIGH-QUALITY GLASS USERS HAVE COME TO EXPECT FROM BUSHNELL, BUT ALSO BOAST THE CAPABILITIES OF A LASER RANGEFINDER INTO A SINGLE, INTUITIVE OPTIC. FUSION X At the core of the Fusion X is a sophisticated ACTIVSYNC display that allows users to maintain visibility in low-light and day-bright lighting conditions. The ACTIVSYNC display automatically changes colour readings, meaning hunters can range targets just as well 30 minutes before sunrise as they can at midday. The display can even show red and black simultaneously if the environment requires it.

038

“As we continue to celebrate our 25th anniversary of the advent of the laser rangefinder, the new Fusion X maintains our commitment to bringing new technologies to the marketplace,” said Derek Osburn, Director of Optics for Vista Outdoor. “The Fusion X offers hunters the best of both worlds with a familiar 10×42 size that offers fantastic light transmission while providing them with all-day viewing thanks to the ground-breaking ActivSync display. These new ranging binos are simply amazing and arrive at a special time in our company’s history as we honor our 25 years of continuing innovation.” The Fusion X binoculars boast one mile ranging capability with a +/- one-yard accuracy. To activate the binoculars, simply push the ranging button to power on the rangefinder, as well as to activate single range and scan mode. For quick application setup, a second button on the bridge of the binocular offers users to select from multiple modes. Near/far ranging modes allow users to home in on the target while ignoring objects in the foreground and background. Meanwhile, bow and rifle ballistics modes provide the right data for your next shot. Fusion X also features height mode, which uses two ranged points and the angle in between to calculate the height of an object (such as a tree). For the best possible optical quality, the Fusion X is built around a High-Definition Optical System (HDOS) for clarity and low-light performance in the field. Fully multi-coated lenses give users increased clarity and performance in low-light conditions.

ATIBAL SIGHTS ARE FOCUSED ON OFFERING THEIR CUSTOMER BASE THE MOST INNOVATIVE AND HIGH QUALITY OPTICAL SOLUTIONS AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE POINT. THEIR PASSION COMES IN OFFERING SPORTSMEN AND COMPETITORS SOLUTIONS TO INCREASE THEIR ACCURACY AND SPEED OF ACQUISITION. WITH THEIR DILIGENCE IN RESEARCH AND BY STAYING AT THE TIP OF THE SPEAR IN REGARD TO CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY, ATIBAL SIGHTS AIM TO ENSURE THEIR END-USERS ARE CONSTANTLY ABLE TO PERFORM TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY. S.A.P. MICRO PRISM The Atibal S.A.P. Micro Prism is the smallest and lightest prismatic scope on the market to date. The SAP is the ideal optic for short range and close quarters engagements, with its exceptionally small size and

040

weight the SAP is extremely agile in tight spaces when speed and accuracy are paramount. Unlike a traditional red dot sight where your reticule is projected against a plane of glass the SAP features a laser etched illuminated reticule which is apparent with or without illumination. The laser etched reticule also has the added benefit of always being crisp and clear, as opposed to a red dot which may be prone to poor reticule experience, depending on the user’s vision. The SAP also features a reticule focus adjustment at the ocular lens to further ensure a perfectly focused reticule every time. We spent 2 years of extensive research and development to bring you the smallest and lightest 1x prism on the market to date. The Circle Dot reticule of the SAP is not designed for engaging targets at various long distances, but more so for enhancing target acquisition and engagement at short distances and close quarters. The reticule is designed so that the 60 MOA outer ring can be used to rapidly frame the target until the centre dot is realized and a confident shot can be placed. The uncluttered sight picture along with the both eyes open operation of the SAP enable the shooter to better observe the impact area and place accurate follow up shots rapidly when needed, all the while maintaining good situational awareness.

During the R&D of the SAP we were able to determine the best features and specifications that would ensure stable and reliable operation while lessening the overall footprint of the optic. Oftentimes products become so feature rich that they inundate the user with too many options all the while embedding elaborate components that are more apt to fail. We have removed all the unnecessary aspects that are currently trending in newer optic designs and have fortified all of our existing components to enhance performance. The Atibal SAP 1x Micro Prism comes standard with improved LED technology for brilliant illumination and long lasting battery life. The 4 hour auto shut-off will help to prolong the battery life, as well as alleviating the user’s worries of forgetting to shut their optic off. The SAP comes installed with a co-witness height mount and can be configured with a low profile height mount by simply removing the co-witness height spacer from the existing mount.

KONGSBERG

COMPLETE TRAINING EXERCISE WITH US ARMY IN COLLABORATION WITH THE U.S. ARMY, KONGSBERG DEFENCE AND AEROSPACE AND THE JAVELIN JOINT VENTURE (JJV) CONDUCTED A FOUR-SHOT, MULTI-PLATFORM JAVELIN DEMONSTRATION AT THE U.S. ARMY REDSTONE TEST CENTER IN ALABAMA ON MAY 25, 2021. THREE DIFFERENT VEHICLES WERE EACH EQUIPPED WITH DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS OF THE KONGSBERG COMMON REMOTELY OPERATED WEAPON STATION-JAVELIN (CROWS-J) AND PROTECTOR RS6 REMOTE WEAPON STATION (RWS) “KONGSBERG has solidified its position as the remote weapon station of choice for Javelin deployment across a broad range of platforms. Our remote weapon stations are powerful force multipliers, especially given that we’re delivering a Multi-User Multi-Station (MUMS) capability to facilitate advanced target sharing and cooperative engagement,” said Jason Toepfer, director for Army Business Development (US) at KONGSBERG Defence and Aerospace. “Our continued investments in the architecture and platforms overall maximize the U.S. military’s current inventory, training and provisioning while providing groundbreaking advancements in capability.”

042

During the demonstration, three different KONGSBERG remote weapon station configurations on three unique ground platforms fired Javelin, successfully engaging targets each time. Using QinetiQ North America’s Robotic Combat Vehicle-Light (RCV-L), KONGSBERG executed a fully remote firing of Javelin using CROWS Tech Refresh control components. This was a first for the Army’s official RCV-L platform and demonstrated Tech Refresh’s backwards compatibility with legacy CROWS systems. Another firing demonstrated KONGSBERG’s capability to fire Javelin on a 4×4 (JLTV) platform from a previously qualified and fielded system within the inventory on an 8×8 platform – the same KONGSBERG RWS that is currently fielded with Stryker brigades in Germany. Finally, KONGSBERG continued to showcase its PROTECTOR RS6 (30x113mm) platform by successfully firing javelin from a lightweight, Ground Mobility Vehicle (GMV). The RS6 RWS is the system selected by the U.S. Marine Corps for the Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS) program. This Javelin firing is one of several conducted from this station and further demonstrates the inherent flexibility of the RS6 design, allowing users to address a broad range of threats and operational needs – C-UAS, SHORAD, ATGM, Maneuver Support, Manned / Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) – from a single system. With more than 20,000 systems delivered worldwide and 14 years of CROWS experience, KONGSBERG will continue to support the soldiers with new systems, capabilities and features meeting tomorrow’s requirements while maintaining, supporting and keeping up to date a wide range of CROWS variants and support equipment. All CROWS and RWS systems are produced in the KONGSBERG Johnstown, PA facility. Continuing the execution of this contract secures 3,000+ jobs, both directly and through the KONGSBERG U.S. supply chain. With systems sold to 26 nations, KONGSBERG is the world-leading provider of remote weapon stations.

1

Born in August 2014 following an incident in which Officer Darren Wilson was involved in an officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of an individual in Ferguson, Missouri, Viridian Gun Cameras noted the news coverage of the ensuing community unrest. In the following months, they observed that much of the controversy associated with officer involved shootings was the disagreement by parties on what actually happened. Other evidentiary devices were sometimes helpful in assessing use of force events but also continued to show limitations on activation and viewpoint. It became obvious to them that cameras were needed on officers’ guns and that their patented INSTANT-ON® activation was necessary to overcome these shortcomings that often raise more questions than they answer in these tragic events. At Viridian, they had already been manufacturing cutting-edge accessories for firearms for a decade, and the idea to use their technology to attach a camera to a firearm was inevitable. This led to the creation of the Fact Duty Weapon Mounted Camera, or WMC.

FACT DUTY WMC

The WMC is relatively simple in design, looking no different than a standard tactical light that attaches to the picatinny rail of a handgun.

046

But in reality, it is far from a simple product. The WMC combines the need for Law Enforcement to have a weapon mounted flashlight on their handgun with the capabilities of video recording, achieved via a 1080p HD camera, complete with an audio relay. The flashlight paired with the camera is a 500 lumens light, which not only provides Law Enforcement professionals with a serviceable light source, but also provides ample light for the camera to operate in all lighting environments. To combat the need to turn the light on in situations which require instant reaction such as a Law Enforcement officer being fired upon, the WMC makes use of Viridian Weapon Technologies patented Instant-On feature. Just pre-set the Viridian mode, slide your gun into your INSTANT-ON equipped holster, and the INSTANT-ON system is armed and ready. The instant the gun leaves the holster, the Viridian activates as fast as you can draw. In recent times, Viridian Weapon Technologies have been at the forefront of an incident which occurred in Wilbarger County, Texas, with evidence from the FACT Duty WMC presented for the first time in an officer-involved shooting trial. The WMC provided the critical evidence for the case by showing the defendant pointing a sawed-off shotgun at Vernon Police Corporal T.J. Session during an exchange of gunfire in which both Corporal Session and the defendant were shot and wounded. Body camera and dash camera video was also available from the incident, but the Viridian FACT Duty provided the only unfettered evidence of the defendant reaching for a weapon and subsequently shooting the officer. The defendant was convicted by the jury of aggravated assault on a public official and sentenced to 40 years in prison.

STALKER The STALKER is Safran Optics 1 latest product release, first teased in 2016 following a DoD contract. A lightweight, handheld, day/night target acquisition, surveillance, and reconnaissance device, the STALKER provides the end-user with a reliable product that is capable of operating in even the most adverse weather conditions around the world, allowing operators an unprecedented level of situational awareness for a variety of different missions and AOs. The STALKER makes use of a Class 1 eye-safe laser and can range over 5,000m in harsh conditions, with a maximum range of 10,000m in good weather conditions. “The STALKER is a great tool for reconnaissance, surveillance, and targeting,” said Sam Lerman, Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “This is a resource for dismounted soldiers to quickly and accurately locate and relay positions of interest to supporting forces.” The system makes use of a low-power consuming digital magnetic compass to determine azimuth (horizontal angle or direction of a compass bearing) and inclination, allowing dismounted soldiers to pinpoint the location of enemy forces. It also has outstanding C4I (command, control, communication, computers and intelligence) capabilities, along with multiple interfaces including RS-232 and USB for data exchange with other devices.

OBSERVATION MODES DIRECT VIEW DAY OPTICS

Direct view day optics provide the end-user with clarity during day-light operations. Direct view optics essentially relate to a class of sensors including the human eye and the human eye coupled with a range of enhancing optical solutions such as rifle scopes, binoculars and telescopes. These optics make use of a target acquisition model based on the contrast threshold function of the eye with a modification for the optics modulation transfer function and optical magnification.

LOW LIGHT CMOS OPTICS Low light Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (abbreviated to CMOS) optics provide the end-user with the ability to make use of an optical sight in situations where there is a low natural light source. CMOS image sensors have traditionally offered lower sensitivity than their CCD counterparts. Detection at low light intensities represents a particularly significant challenge in the development of improved CMOS sensors. Upon exposure to light, a photocurrent is produced in the pixel. The lowest level that a pixel can record is known as the “leakage” or “dark” current.

LWIR THERMAL IMAGER Long-wave Infrared (abbreviated to LWIR) thermal imagers provide the end-user with the ability to survey an area regardless of the weather condition or light source, making it the perfect tool for dismounted soldiers to have. LWIR imaging has the great advantages of being able to image objects by their own light and discriminate between objects based on their temperature; in addition, LWIR imaging works well for outdoor use due to the relatively low output power of the Sun at LWIR wavelengths.

THE LEATHERMAN STORY BEGAN WHEN TIM LEATHERMAN, FOUNDER OF LEATHERMAN, WENT ON A BUDGET TRIP TO EUROPE IN 1975. DURING HIS TIME IN EUROPE, TIM REALISED THE NEED FOR A PLIERS BASED, MULTI-PURPOSE TOOL, AND AS SOON AS TIM SET FOOT ON US SOIL, HE BEGAN WORK. WHEN TIM STARTED ON THE PROTOTYPE FOR THIS NEW TOOL, HE ESTIMATED IT WOULD TAKE HIM A MONTH. INSTEAD, IT TOOK THE NEXT THREE YEARS TO BUILD THE PROTOTYPE HE ENVISIONED AND FILE FOR A PATENT. WITH THE PATENT APPLICATION AND PROTOTYPE IN HAND, HE SET OFF TO SELL HIS IDEA, AN IDEA THAT TOOK A FURTHER THREE AND A HALF YEARS TO SELL. W W W.GEARUP-MAG.COM

The original Leatherman tool was called the PST, or known as the Pocket Survival Tool. Eight years in the making, the PST comprised of 13 different tools and folded up into a five ounce, four inch toolbox. In the first year of business, Tim and his partner Steve Berliner hoped to sell 4,000 tools; instead, they sold 30,000. And over the next decade, they would sell over one million PST multi-tools. Now, forty years on, the company is still manufacturing out of Portland, Oregon.

FREE™ K4X Leatherman’s FREE™ range originally launched into a range of their award-winning plier-based multi-tools in early 2019. The range was a huge success, re-imagining the plier-based multi-tool. Since then, Leatherman have been hard at work in their design labs, and are now pleased to announce the release of the K Series; a range of magnetic folding knives. Utilising the same magnet-based architecture that re-invigorated

056

their P Series multi-tools, the K Series focuses on ease of access. This introduction of magnet-based architecture means Leatherman products now long outlast the brand’s spring-based products. The FREE™ K4X is one of four different models released in the K Series, and is being marketed as the premium item in the range, coming complete with all of the features present in the K Series, which includes: a pry tool, package opener, awl, bottle opener, Phillips driver, and medium and extra-small flathead drivers. On top of that, the K4X comes with a pair of spring-action scissors and a combo-serrated knife in place of a 420HC steel blade. The FREE™ K4X also comes in an aesthetically pleasing, yet simple package. The stainless steel construction gives the K4X a gleaming look, while the stippled handle adds some form of texture to the knife. And as with all Leatherman products, it comes with a 25-year guarantee.

The FREE™ locking system is revolutionary. Making use of magnetic force, Leatherman have created a locking system that allows for smooth, quick access to tools, allowing the end-user to work with speed and confidence.

1

1 2

Every feature on the Leatherman FREE™ K4X tool can be opened and operated with one hand. This enables the user to keep the other hand free for situations that require multi-tasking or a free hand.

2

3

All locking features means that every tool and knife on the body of the handle, with the exception of the plier head, will lock into place. Note that the Crunch; however, does feature both all locking tools and plier head.

3

To ensure the blade of the K4X is always up to the task, Leatherman have made use of a combo-serrated knife within the FREE K4X™. This blade measures in at 3.3”, and will chew through a large variety of materials with ease.

4

The Leatherman FREE is one of the most inventive pocket knife’s on the market. Combining the simplicity of a pocket knife with the versatility of a multi-tool, Leatherman have created a product that houses 8 tools but only weighs 155.9g.

AFWERX & KITTY HAWK

PARTNER IN FIRST MEDEVAC EXERCISE AFWERX AGILITY PRIME AND NEW PARTNER KITTY HAWK REACHED A MILESTONE IN MAY WITH THEIR FIRST OPERATIONAL EXERCISE. “THIS EXERCISE PRODUCED IMPORTANT DATA THAT WILL BOLSTER THE PROGRAM GOING FORWARD,” SAID LT. COL. MARTIN SALINAS, THE MISSION DESIGN TEAM LEAD IN THE AIR FORCE OPERATIONAL TEST AND EVALUATION CENTER.

“The world is going to need new modes of transportation and Heaviside is one path to getting us there,” said Sebastian Thrun, Kitty Hawk CEO. “We are excited to be working with Agility Prime and look forward to our continued collaboration as we bring eVTOLs to more people.”

The technology and companies in the AFWERX Agility Prime program continue to mature rapidly with a new partner Kitty Hawk joining the government/industry team. In the program’s first exercise, a diverse group of industry and government operators, engineers, and test professionals assessed the ability to do medical evacuation, personnel recovery, and logistics with Kitty Hawk’s Heaviside electric vertical takeoff and landing, or eVTOL, aircraft. The Kitty Hawk team also demonstrated Heaviside’s remote flying capabilities. The multi-disciplinary team gathered a rich catalogue of data to inform dual-use utility at the prototype stage that will inform future developmental and fielding decisions. Besides assessing different loading scenarios, the team also observed demonstrations of remotely piloted and fully autonomous flights with Heaviside.

Founded in 2010 and based in California, Kitty Hawk, has developed numerous eVTOL vehicles including the Heaviside vehicle, named after the English engineer, Oliver Heaviside. Designed to be fast, small, quiet and green, the aircraft flies at up to 180 mph with a potential range of 100 miles plus reserves on a single charge, according to Kitty Hawk’s website. Heaviside takes off and lands in a 30×30 foot space, reaches sound levels of 38 dBA at 1,000 feet, is 100x quieter than a helicopter and requires less than half the energy per mile of a conventional electric car. “The Agility Prime and Kitty Hawk teams facilitated the convergence of Air Force and Marine Corps testers and operators to engage with Heaviside, all while experimenting within the context of Personnel Recovery and logistics use-case scenarios,” Salinas said. Salinas attributed the success of the California tests to the eagerness of those involved. “Pushing experimental tests in an operational context is challenging and exciting,” he said. Col. Don Haley, Air Education and Training Command Detachment 62 commander, who leads a team in developing training syllabi for these new electric aircraft, noted, “this collaborative commercial/DoD use-case exploration revealed common attributes that serve both urban air mobility and search and rescue operations: High-reliability, responsive launch & recovery, minimal logistical footprint, accessibility for mobility-challenged, low acoustic signature, and high levels of autonomy.” “We are pleased to welcome a new partner and happy about the progress in this first Agility Prime exercise,” said Col. Nathan Diller, AFWERX Director. “This is just the beginning of many examples that the team will be exploring in the coming months to partner with commercial companies in a way that accelerates maturity for commercialization, while providing the Department of the Air Force with decision-quality data for future force design.”
