FURTHER PROTOTYPE NEXT GEN FLIGHT HELMET After a gruelling prototype competition that started over a year ago and with over 100 different contenders, LIFT have been selected to further prototype the Next Generation Fixed Wing Helmet (NGFWH) for the U.S. Air Force in a milestone based funded Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force and Air Force Life Cycle Management program created to address technological improvements in cockpits of all airframes except for the F35 Lightning.

■ AV 2.2 NGFWH AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT THEY HAVE SUCCESSFULLY Airborne’s next generation fixed wing helmet design incorporates ADDRESSED WITH THIS NGFWH INCLUDE HUMAN FACTORS LIFT a wide range of updated technologies. Active Noise Reduction (ANR) is a issue feature which improves speech intelligibility across a wide SUCH AS STABILITY, WEIGHT, COMFORT AND OVERALL FIT. standard frequency spectrum, helping to protect crew members from stress and Technology integration of various systems like weapons guidance systems, target cueing systems, improved speech intelligibility, cockpit lighting and stability improvements have to all be considered with the design and development of this NGFWH. The overall performance in ejection and Search and Rescue scenarios are also areas where improvement over outdated current equipment are a necessity. The AV1 KOR, the first flight helmet from LIFT Aviation, was created with the goal of bringing modern technology and innovation to the industry, something that was desperately needed; the need for this same technological advancement is seen in the U.S. Air Force fixed wing helmets being used today.

“We are honored to have been selected by the Department of Defense and the U.S. Air Force to be involved with this program. Innovation is something that has been lacking in the fixed wing helmet that the U.S. Air Force has implemented for the past number of decades and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the USAF and DoD to continue to further prototype the NGFWH. The approach taken with our first flight helmet was to have it be modern, innovative and above all, safe. We can’t wait to bring that same approach while prototyping this NGFWH to provide our airmen and warfighters the best in flight helmet technology.” states Guido Rietdyk, President and CEO of LIFT Aviation. “The technological advances that we developed in our other businesses in personal safety products in the orthopedic and extreme sports industries under our EVS Sports brand, and in the industrial safety industry with our LIFT Safety brand, in addition to our LIFT Aviation flight focused brand, all have greatly contributed to us being able to draw innovation from a variety of applications and come up with state of the art technology in the cockpit, now working to make our USAF air crews equipped just as well as their air craft are.”

fatigue. The Aircrew Mounted Power Supply (AMPS) is an off-helmet unit, which reduces weight, and helps extend the life of the helmet through it’s rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (reducing battery waste). Additional features include Improved stability, a reduced helmet size to aid in better ‘mass properties’, a carbon fiber shell to reduce helmet weight and crew member neck strain, and a “custom fit system” to provide a more comfortable fit for aircrew members. These features will make the helmet one of the most advanced, and aircrew-friendly helmets in the world. LIFT Airborne is conducting a wide range of tests to meet Air Force quality standards, and align with key performance characteristics. The Air Force will be evaluating the helmet design by performing tests such as centrifuge, deceleration, audio and communications, and anthropometric testing. In addition, LIFT Airborne will also be performing a series third-party lab testing, to ensure quality and consistency across all configurations. These include Environmental, Impact and Penetration testing, and linear displacement tests. All testing is being conducted on the Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS) configuration, the Night Vision Goggle (slick) configuration, as well as other helmet-mounted systems. “LIFT Airborne is combining its 30 years of successful personal protective gear research and development with the vast background of its in-house pilot trained staff that has literally tens of thousands of flight hours in fast jets and other aircraft to truly build a state-of-the-art Next Gen Fixed Wing Helmet the likes of which have truly never been seen. It is unique in its wealth of innovative features, its ease of use for both aircrew as well as aircrew equipment maintainers, and its exceptional form factor that screams aggressive style, as opposed to the blob-shaped helmets of yore. Overall our team has exceeded many expectations and we’re excited to continue on this development path of refinement and quality execution of key performance parameters.” states Guido Rietdyk, the President and Chief Executive Officer of LIFT Airborne Technologies.

LIFT AIRBORNE AV 2.2 THE NEXT GENERATION OF FIXED WING FLIGHT HELMET

Says Jason Barnes, Vice President of Product Design: “I couldn’t be more proud of how my team has excelled in harnessing the varied benefits of many best-in-class technologies provided by industry leading component and technology partners on this project. It’s no surprise that with this approach the end result is better than expected and we’ve managed to check the boxes on required features, but also added some things that we know pilots want, but weren’t necessarily on the requirements list. There’s no doubt that our Next Generation Fixed Wing Helmet is truly that: Next Generation. Its modularity and simplicity of use in everyday mission configuration is allowing improved mission success and reduced logistical support. We’ve managed to accelerate the seemingly stagnant design cycles in existing legacy helmet systems and boosted the overall look and feel of the helmet to a point where aircrew are proud to be wearing it.”

FEATURES

■ LOW PROFILE NVG MOUNTING PLATE The low-profile NVG Mounting Plate allows for quick on/off capabilities and is designed to be integrated with Aviator Night Vision Image System (ANVIS) configurations. With the NVG Mounting Plate being externally mounted it also allows the ability to easily swap the NVG Mounting Plate to the Slick Cover Plate.

■ SINGLE PIVOT LIGHTWEIGHT VISOR The top actuated single pivot dual visor assembly is designed to allow the user the ability to easily raise and/or lower the clear, polycarbonate, visor in smooth one-handed operation.

■ COCKPIT ILLUMINATION ASSEMBLY This unique assembly provides a hands-free activation with NVG-compatible illumination fully integrated into the AV 2.2. The system features NVG compatible lights with three adjustable levels of brightness on each side of the helmet for up to 5 lumens on High, 2 lumens on the Middle, and 0.04 lumens on the lowest setting.

■ ROTATABLE BAYONET RECEIVERS Oxygen masks are attached to the helmet through the use of an internal pair of adjustable and Rotatable Bayonet Receivers. The unique design allows for receiver adjustments of up to 45 degrees per side. Interchangeable and easily replaceable, the receivers also incorporate 5 detailed fitting marks so mask positioning can be recorded on inspection records to ensure that the same fit can be built on a new helmet should a change out be needed.

■ HANDS-FREE COCKPIT ILLUMINATION This innovative system features NVG-compatible lights with three adjustable brightness levels on each side of the helmet.

■ MAGNETIC CHIN STRAP The Magnetic Chin Strap buckle on the AV 2.2 allows the user to mate the chin strap with a single hand. Once connected the male/ female latch assembly can withstand more than 438 lbs. of force.

■ VENTILATION Koroyd, an advanced impact protection system for the user, also provides an incredibly ventilated environment for the user due to it’s multi-hole structure combined with the external venting on the AV 2.2. It is also easy to remove, inspect, and replace if necessary.

■ CUSTOM FITTING A custom/personalized fit in the AV 2.2 is an easy task for the user with our variously sized comfort liner fitting pads. Our system of 5 comfort liner pads inside the helmet can be customized using any combination of 7-, 10-, or 13-millimeter thicknesses to achieve the best custom fit possible with limited maintenance.

THYRM LLC IS AN AMERICAN, FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS LED BY THE BELIEF THAT INNOVATIVE, ROBUST PRODUCTS CAN MAKE USERS MORE EFFECTIVE AND RESILIENT. THEIR DESIGN TEAM HAS MORE THAN 40 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE DEVELOPING TOOLS FOR OPERATORS IN HIGH-RISK PROFESSIONS. ADDITIONALLY, THEY WORK WITH MULTIPLE SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS WITHIN THE PRODUCTS’ FIELD OF USE TO ENSURE THEIR DESIGNS MEET USER NEEDS.

018

LOW PROFILE CARRY CLIP Thyrm® changed the premium flashlight market in 2014 with the introduction of the SwitchBack®. Individuals could now pocket-carry most premium flashlights like Surefire and Streamlight with the SwitchBack’s pocket clip. The SwitchBack’s finger ring introduced a host of new features to the handheld light market including flashlight retention and the SwitchBack technique for use with handguns. Consumer demand for a low-profile flashlight carry clip spurred the design of the SwitchBack’s undercover cousin – introducing the LPC Clip™. Thyrm developed the Low Profile Carry Clip (LPC Clip) to give your flashlight everything it needs, including less visual signature around town. The clip height is designed to minimize exposure, while still allowing you to index & draw your flashlight quickly in all conditions and positions. Subtle control surfaces on the sides enhance traction and facilitate alternate grip techniques.

W W W.GEARUP-MAG.COM

018-019 THYRM.indd 18

07/12/2021 14:08

The LPC (Low Profile Carry) Clip offers deep carry of premium flashlights like Modlite Systems, Surefire Fury, 6P and G2X, Streamlight Protac HL/HL-X, and the soon-to-be-released Cloud Defensive handheld. This low ride height minimises visual signature. Thyrm designed subtle control surfaces into the LPC to aid in secure deployments and various grip techniques. A lanyard hole fits 1/8” shock-cord and paracord.

THE LPC CLIP INSTALLS SIMILARLY TO THE THYRM SWITCHBACK FLASHLIGHT RING. LEAVE O-RING(S) THAT COME WITH YOUR FLASHLIGHT ALREADY, ON THE LIGHT. UNSCREW THE TAILCAP OF THE FLASHLIGHT, THEN ADD THE LPC CLIP ALONG WITH O-RING AND/ OR ALUMINUM WASHER BEFORE REATTACHING THE TAILCAP. NOTE THAT DIFFERENT LIGHTS REQUIRE DIFFERENT INSTALLATION AS SHOWN IN THE DIAGRAM. FOR INSTANCE, SUREFIRE LIGHTS WITH CLICK TAILCAPS SHOULD NEED NEITHER THE O-RING NOR THE ALUMINUM WASHER.

AGALITE

LAUNCH AG1 AND AG3 Agilite AG Mag Pouches are bungee retention pouches that allow you to draw or reindex magazines easily and quickly with just one hand and without bungee retention tabs getting in your way. Bungee retention mag pouches have been in service for over a decade due to how well they retain mags. but they have an inherent, annoying flaw. They make removing or returning a mag a clumsy, two-handed, two motion process because the magazine snags on the bungee tabs. This is especially problematic on “tac reloads”. AG pouches solve this age-old problem and go from HALO jump-level retention to safety off, mag draw, mag re-index and back without ever removing your dominant hand from your weapon. Agalite don’t believe in ever taking both hands off your weapon in a firefight because we come from a place where time off-target and off-weapon when the bullets are flying can easily cost you your life. Sometimes you can’t spare that time to re-engage because snagging causes you to look down or remove your second hand from your weapon. AG pouches use a proprietary combination of purposely-built polymer pull tabs and several stiffened materials that work together to give you the retention level of closed-top pouches but the quick-draw, snag-free capability of open-topped pouches.

YOUR GEAR NEEDS TO ENABLE YOU AND ALLOW YOU TO FOCUS ON THE THREAT- IT SHOULDN’T IMPEDE OR ANNOY YOU. THE CUSTOM-POLYMER PULL TABS ALSO ALLOW BOTH MECHANICAL AND FRICTION GRIP TO GET THE PERFECT GRAB, WITH OR WITHOUT GLOVES.

COMP-TAC ARE KNOWN WORLDWIDE FOR A NUMBER OF PRODUCTS, BUT NOTHING QUITE STANDS OUT LIKE THEIR HOLSTERS. MADE FOR AN ARRAY OF DIFFERENT HANDGUNS, THEIR RANGE COVERS JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU COULD ASK FOR. THAT SAID, THEY’RE NOT KEEN TO REST ON THEIR LAURELS, AND HAVE RECENTLY RELEASED A NEW RANGE OF HOLSTERS IN THE CT2 AND CT3. The CT3 is designed so the user can deactivate the three levels of retention while maintaining their master grip. The intuitive release mechanism equals economy of motion, faster, more consistent draws and less training time. The three level of retention are the hood, automatic ejection port lock and friction retention, to prevent unintentional removal of your handgun. The CT3 activation lever releases the hood when pressed, and only releases the ejection port lock when held down during the draw. These features, combined with Comp-Tac’s unique and masterful approach to holster body construction, give the CT3 unparalleled fit, security, and draw speed. A variety of mounting options are available including drop offset, mid-ride belt, SQR (Secure Quick Release), PLM (Push-Button Locking Mount), and an adaptor plate for QLS system.

We wanted to be able to take the skills that we have acquired and the relationships we have built in the industry to offer a solution for the men and women on the front lines of our law enforcement, military and all users wanting multiple levels of retention.” In addition to the CT3 Holster, Comp-Tac® has also released the CT2™ Series of holsters. The CT2-A™ Holster offers two levels of retention with an ejection port lock that automatically locks when the weapon is holstered along with friction retention. A safety shroud assists in concealing the activation lever to provide an additional layer of safety and security. Designed using super durable Kydex®, the CT2-A Holster has numerous mounting options.

THE CT2-H™ HOLSTER USES BOTH A HOOD AND FRICTION PROVIDING TWO LEVELS OF RETENTION. THE SAFETY SHROUD ASSISTS IN CONCEALING THE ACTIVATION LEVEL FOR THE USER’S SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS. FRICTION RETENTION SCREWS CAN BE ADJUSTED FOR A SECURE HOLD AROUND THE TRIGGER GUARD AND MUZZLE. AIRCRAFT-GRADE KYDEX® IS STRATEGICALLY FORMED TO RESTRICT ANY UNDESIRED MOVEMENT ALSO KNOWN AS “HOLSTER RATTLE” WHILE THE WEAPON IS HOLSTERED. THE CT2-H IS DESIGNED WITH THE USER IN MIND FOR SAFETY, SECURITY, AND SUPERIOR ALL-DAY-WEAR COMFORT.

LOW DRAG PLACARD

BRITISH-BASED LUMINAE WERE CONCEIVED FOLLOWING THE FOUNDERS’ EXPERIENCE AS SERVING MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES IN THE 2000S. AS WITH A NUMBER OF SERVICE-BASED COMPANIES, LUMINAE SAW A GAP IN THE MARKET FOR A RANGE OF EQUIPMENT, AND WITH UK-MADE TACTICAL EQUIPMENT SOMEWHAT ON THE LOW SIDE, LUMINAE WERE BORN. With a range of products, varying from shooters belts through to chest rigs, Luminae have created a range of products that are hard to match within the UK. Furthermore, all Luminae products are made in the UK. They also supply high quality items that are manufactured outside the UK by other brands, such as Platatac.

026

Luminae Low Drag Placard (LDP) is a light weight, operator style magazine pouch. Designed to securely retain magazines and other mission critical items. The LDP uses elastic that allows the pouch accommodate magazines and variety oddly shaped, bulky items like tourniquets and smoke grenades as well as non-bulky items like compasses and notebooks. The interior design of the LDP is made from a carbon based composite meaning it is rigid and strong but very lightweight. The same composite material that is used in the construction of the Luminae Shooters Belt. The LDP also features tabs on the top for elastic retention to further secure the magazines. It also gives you a tab to pull the magazine cell open making filling the pouch much easier than other designs. Elastic mag pouches manufactured by other brands have a sealed or closed tapered bottom, this can result in a squeeze effect meaning the elastic can actually push the magazine upwards and out of the pouch, a “birthing effect”. Our LDP resolves this by having an open bottom with a tab, this means all the elastic retention is pushing sideways, holding the magazine, not pushing it upwards. The back of the LDP has hook velcro so it can be attached to plate carriers with velcro fastening systems. It can also be used in conjunction with the Luminae Chest Rig harness.

their own in-house robotic Cerakote finishing line, Daniel Defense aims to control its own destiny to better serve the end-user. This was only enhanced in 2017 when the company moved into its state-of-the-art 300k square-foot manufacturing facility. By leveraging their design and manufacturing efficiencies Daniel Defense have successfully been able to provide consumers custom quality products at a great value.

DD WAVE® 7.62 SUPPRESSOR Daniel Defense is a family owned and privately held firearms manufacturer located in Black Creek, Georgia. Founded in 2000 by President/CEO Marty Daniel, the company was born from Marty’s vision to create custom rifle accessories for his personal rifles. Eighteen years later, Daniel’s concepts have evolved into one of the most recognizable brands in the firearms world, consisting of some of the world’s finest AR15-style rifles, pistols, bolt action rifles, and accessories for civilian, law enforcement, and military customers. Since selling their first AR in 2009, Daniel Defense work each day to deliver products unmatched in quality, precision, and world-class customer service. From inception, the company has strived to control every facet of production and today makes nearly every component part it sells. This differentiates them from many industry players who basically assemble rather than build their products. From being one of the first in the industry to use a cold hammer forging process to build the world’s most accurate and durable barrels to using

032

The new DD WAVE 7.62 sound suppressor’s advanced cascading baffle geometry more effectively attenuates sound than simpler baffle styles. The DD WAVE’s unique one-piece, 3D-printed Nickel Based Superalloy baffle/tube eliminates the need for welds—typically the weakest points of a traditional suppressor—providing unmatched strength and durability. As mentioned, the DD WAVE is 3D printed, making use of one of the most advanced methods to do so – laser sintering. Laser sintering is most known for its use in the creation of parts for space rockets, however Daniel Defense have incorporated it into the design of the DD WAVE due to its ability to generate unique designs. Constructed of nickel-based superalloy, stainless steel, and titanium— and then Cerakote coated—the DD WAVE 7.62 is fiercely strong yet lightweight, making it durable, and reliable for full auto use. The DD WAVE is attached via their Acme Thread Quick-Clamping System, which will not carbon lock, and securely clamps the suppressor to a 17-4 PH stainless steel muzzle device, making it easy to remove even after extended use.

INDICATOR LIGHT

ARMING, ACTIVATION, & SAFETY

APERTURE COVER, DIFFUSERS & COWLING

There is no “ARMED” indicator. To render the device inert the batteries must be removed or the endcap of the device unscrewed a 1/4 turn from the body. Unscrewing the endcap of the device is the preferred method to render a device with a battery installed safe when activation is not necessary.

The Indicator Light is located just above the B.E. Meyers & Co., Inc. product marking. The orientation of the Indicator Light to any given Body the head is attached to will be random. The laser safety warning labels can be found on the reverse side of the device from the Indicator Light.

The KIJI K1 laser device(s) come equipped with an Aperture Cover that has a built-in external diffuser. The Aperture Cover and diffuser combination serve to protect the laser aperture window, render all output PLs Class 1 (with the diffuser shipped with the particular model as listed below), and provide the user with the ability to quickly change the KIJI K1 beam size. ■ The KIJI K1-3° is provided with an aperture cover with a 10° diffuser installed, marked with “10” ■ The KIJI K1-10° is provided with an aperture cover with a 40° diffuser installed, marked with “40” ■ Aperture Covers are held in place with a retaining band that can be removed by the user and replaced if necessary. An additional retaining band is included with KIJI K1 kits. Additional Aperture Covers and retaining bands can be purchased separately. ■ The polymer Cowling around the Head of the device can be independently rotated to orient the flip-open Aperture Cover and to properly expose the Indicator Light. The Cowling serves to retain the aperture cover and is not necessary for function.

038

■ KIJI uses a single (1) 3V CR123 battery. Do NOT use with 6V light bodies. ■ The device is ARMED once a battery is installed.

The activation button on the supplied endcap can function either as a momentary button or clicked-down for constant on. See “Operation Styles” for more information. Aftermarket remote switches or buttons compatible with CR123 300 series light bodies will operate KIJI. Do not use endcaps that can alter the output power of a normal white light, such as EDC-style “gas pedal” endcaps.

OPERATION STYLES

Programmability is a core component of KIJI with multiple intensity settings and mode combinations, all selectable by the user to ensure optimal performance at the touch of a button. Each model features four power levels and 32-modes of use in three Operation Styles:

SIMPLE (4 MODES)

The KIJI K1 device emits a single output Power Level (PL). The activation switch can be used for either momentary activation or clicked-down for constant on with a push-button endcap.

W W W.GEARUP-MAG.COM

035-039 BE MEYERS.indd 38

07/12/2021 14:12

CYCLED (22 MODES)

■ The KIJI K1 device emits two to four different PLs depending on the mode. Tapping or clicking the activation button quickly will cycle through the available PLs. ■ The activation button can be clicked-down to or held to stay in that PL until released. ■ The cycle goes only in a single direction, and does not loop through consecutive taps on the last PL will stay on that PL until the activation button is released for 1 second. ■ The direction of the PLs, low to high or high to low, will be determined by the mode.

TOGGLED (6 MODES)

■ The KIJI K1 device emits two different PLs. The activation button functions as in the Simple style, however by using the button combination of TAP, TAP, TAP & HOLD, called Triple-Tap, the PL will swap to the other available PL for the Mode. It is not necessary to click-down the activation button during HOLD. ■ The ‘taps’ for the Toggled Triple-Tap must be within 200ms of each other. Slow taps will not toggle the PL. ■ This Operation Style is best paired with a remote cable or switch without a click-through function.

KIJI-K1-03 BATTERY LIFE

■ 4HR 15MIN AT FULL POWER AT FULL POWER CONSTANT ON. At Power Level 4 (PL4 of 150mw) the KIJI 3 degree will run for approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes (constant on/firing) before output power starts to ramp, and then another 30 min until the output power has fallen to 10% of the original set point (so down to 15mw). So, technically stays on even longer.

KIJI-K1-10 BATTERY LIFE

■ 1HR 12MIN AT FULL POWER CONSTANT ON. At Power Level 4 (PL4 of 350mw) will run for approximately 1 hour and 12 minutes (constant on/firing) before power begins to ramp, and then another 46 min until the output power has fallen to 10% of the original set point (so down to 35mw).

Founded in 1999 with the intent of developing a simple device to aid in the manipulation of rifle magazines, Magpul have since gone on to be a brand admired and used by operators around the world, dominating a number of different sectors within the firearms industry. Over the last twenty years, Magpul have expanded their product range ten-fold. While many people will know Magpul as the brand that revolutionised reload times, creating a product that is now as much of a household name as the firearms industry could muster, their range includes a wide selection of products that focus on three main design points - innovation, simplicity, and efficiency. Magpul believe that the key to success is found not by overcomplicating design, but rather by keeping things simple, intuitive, and affordable, using a range of methods to dictate design without sacrificing quality or performance. By incorporating ergonomic considerations, a proper user interface, and subtle visual and tactile features, the product itself should actually instruct the user about its operation and function. Although every Magpul product comes with clear, concise installation and usage instructions, Magpul aim to design products so self-explanatory that instructions become unnecessary, allowing operators around the world to focus on the job at hand, and not the tool they are using to complete it.

20 ROUND AR 300 MAG

The PMAG 20 AR 300 B GEN M3 is a purpose-built magazine for rifles chambered in .300 Blackout® (300 BLK). Similar in every way to our PMAG 30 AR 300 B, the PMAG 20 is more compact for increased maneuverability and creates a more concealable package for use in small format firearms. Since its inception, 300 BLK shooters have had to use a magazine designed for another cartridge, limiting that round’s ultimate performance and compatibility. One of the key features of 300 BLK in the past has been its compatibility with 5.56x45mm magazines. However, even with moderate success with that particular magazine, it is a compromise to do so, with reliability and safety both being at risk. In addition to the performance gained by a dedicated mag, the PMAG 20 AR 300 B also offers a safer way to feed your 300 BLK rifle. When using 5.56x45mm mags, the potential to chamber and fire a 300 BLK round in a 5.56x45mm rifle with catastrophic results requires diligent ammunition management by the shooter. The PMAG 20 AR 300 B’s distinct ribbed design and smoother upper-half texture provides the shooter a distinct visual and tactile difference from any other PMAG to mitigate dangerous cross-loading issues.

TACTICAL ASSAULT KIT USED IN SOCOM-LED WORKSHOP THE TACTICAL ASSAULT KIT (TAK) PRODUCT CENTER IS HOSTING A HYBRID (IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL) WORKSHOP TO EXPEDITE THE DEVELOPMENT AND INTEGRATION OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS TOOLS

“While programmatic briefs and demonstrations are important, feedback from previous TAK Offsites has been heavy on the value of hallway discussions and introductions between sessions,” said Mark Roberts, deputy director for the TAK Product Center. “This year’s hybrid event facilitates in-person meetings which are key to building strong, lasting relationships amongst community members while simultaneously enabling virtual participation from TAK users around the globe.”

The Tactical Assault Kit (TAK) is a map-based software application that enables coordination among thousands of users with features such as a position data, chat, mission planning and shared overlays. It is compatible with Android, Apple iOS and Windows.

As the central software development hub for all TAK efforts, including 13 federal programs of record, the TAK Product Center provides core development, software updates, cybersecurity and testing for an enhanced user experience.

The TAK offsite will offer an opportunity for stakeholders from across the Department of Defense (DoD), federal agencies and industry to exchange information and identify critical needs. The event will offer tracks for programmatic updates and training on the TAK platforms. A separate track for developers will be held virtually later this year.

To foster innovation, the TAK Product Center approved the public release of a non-military variant for federal and government agencies – known as the Android Team Awareness Kit-Civilian (ATAK-CIV) application – on Google Play and the open-source Standard ATAK Software Development Kit on TAK.gov.

DARPA

GREMLINS THE GENESIS OF THAT MISSION AND OF DARPA ITSELF DATES TO THE LAUNCH OF SPUTNIK IN 1957, AND A COMMITMENT BY THE UNITED STATES THAT, FROM THAT TIME FORWARD, IT WOULD BE THE INITIATOR AND NOT THE VICTIM OF STRATEGIC TECHNOLOGICAL SURPRISES. WORKING WITH INNOVATORS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF GOVERNMENT, DARPA HAS REPEATEDLY DELIVERED ON THAT MISSION, TRANSFORMING REVOLUTIONARY CONCEPTS AND EVEN SEEMING IMPOSSIBILITIES INTO PRACTICAL CAPABILITIES. THE ULTIMATE RESULTS HAVE INCLUDED NOT ONLY GAME-CHANGING MILITARY CAPABILITIES SUCH AS PRECISION WEAPONS AND STEALTH TECHNOLOGY, BUT ALSO SUCH ICONS OF MODERN CIVILIAN SOCIETY SUCH AS THE INTERNET, AUTOMATED VOICE RECOGNITION AND LANGUAGE TRANSLATION, AND GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM RECEIVERS SMALL ENOUGH TO EMBED IN MYRIAD CONSUMER DEVICES.

050

DARPA explicitly reaches for transformational change instead of incremental advances. But it does not perform its engineering alchemy in isolation. It works within an innovation ecosystem that includes academic, corporate and governmental partners, with a constant focus on the Nation’s military Services, which work with DARPA to create new strategic opportunities and novel tactical options. For decades, this vibrant, interlocking ecosystem of diverse collaborators has proven to be a nurturing environment for the intense creativity that DARPA is designed to cultivate.

GREMLINS For decades, U.S. military air operations have relied on increasingly capable multi-function manned aircraft to execute critical combat and non-combat missions. Adversaries’ abilities to detect and engage those aircraft from longer ranges have improved over time as well, however, driving up the costs for vehicle design, operation and replacement. An ability to send large numbers of small unmanned air systems (UASs) with coordinated, distributed capabilities could provide U.S. forces with improved operational flexibility at much lower cost than is possible with today’s expensive, all-in-one platforms—especially if those unmanned systems could be retrieved for reuse while airborne. So far, however, the technology to project volleys of low-cost, reusable systems over great distances and retrieve them in mid-air has remained out of reach.

To help make that technology a reality, DARPA has launched the Gremlins program. Named for the imaginary, mischievous imps that became the good luck charms of many British pilots during World War II, the program envisions launching groups of UASs from existing large aircraft such as bombers or transport aircraft—as well as from fighters and other small, fixed-wing platforms—while those planes are out of range of adversary defenses. When the gremlins complete their mission, a C-130 transport aircraft would retrieve them in the air and carry them home, where ground crews would prepare them for their next use within 24 hours.

THE GREMLINS’ EXPECTED LIFETIME OF ABOUT 20 USES COULD PROVIDE SIGNIFICANT COST ADVANTAGES OVER EXPENDABLE SYSTEMS BY REDUCING PAYLOAD AND AIRFRAME COSTS AND BY HAVING LOWER MISSION AND MAINTENANCE COSTS THAN CONVENTIONAL PLATFORMS, WHICH ARE DESIGNED TO OPERATE FOR DECADES. An unmanned air vehicle demonstrated successful airborne recovery during the DARPA Gremlins program’s latest flight test deployment last month. During the deployment, two X-61 Gremlin Air Vehicles (GAV) successfully validated all autonomous formation flying positions and safety features before one GAV ultimately demonstrated airborne recovery to a C-130.

“This recovery was the culmination of years of hard work and demonstrates the feasibility of safe, reliable airborne recovery,” said Lt. Col. Paul Calhoun, program manager for Gremlins in DARPA’s Tactical Technology Office. “Such a capability will likely prove to be critical for future distributed air operations.” During the final experiment, the team refurbished an X-61 vehicle and conducted a second flight within 24 working-hours. In addition, many hours of data were collected over four flights including air vehicle performance, aerodynamic interactions between the recovery bullet and GAV, and contact dynamics for airborne retrieval. Unfortunately, one GAV was destroyed during the flight tests.

“Airborne recovery is complex,” said Calhoun. “We will take some time to enjoy the success of this deployment, then get back to work further analyzing the data and determining next steps for the Gremlins technology.”

NEWS

US ARMY RE-ENERGISES BATTERY CHARGING CAPABILITIES ENGINEERS ARE WORKING ON OPTIMISING THE POWER DENSITY AND EFFICIENCY OF EMERGING FUEL-CELL BASED POWER GENERATION TECHNOLOGY WHEN OPERATED WITH PACKAGED FUELS AS WELL AS COMMONLY AVAILABLE SUBSTITUTES SUCH AS WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID. ARMY FUTURES COMMAND (AFC) IS LEADING WORK ON THE SOLDIER WEARABLE POWER GENERATOR (SWPG) THAT ENABLES ON-THE-MOVE CHARGING, THUS REDUCING THE NUMBER OF BATTERIES REQUIRED TO BE CARRIED. “We’re aiming to deliver a simple, easy-to-use way for Soldiers to extend battery life and keep moving in the field by developing wearable fuel cells,” said Shailesh Shah, a chemical engineer with the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) Center — a component

of AFC’s Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM). “Enabling fuel cell operation on windshield washer fluid already in the Army’s supply chain avoids the need to set up a logistics re-supply of custom fuels. The SWPG simultaneously reduces dependence on logistics for battery re-supply.” The C5ISR Center’s research aligns with the Army’s renewed emphasis and interest in fuel-cell power generation for supplying power to dismounted Soldiers, according to Shah. Technology in the industry has improved significantly in the past 10 years in terms of size, weight, noise, thermal signature reduction, improved modularity and mounting systems. Adding wearable fuel cells to the Soldier system enables users to charge the currently fielded thin, flexible Conformal Wearable Battery (CWB) worn on vests as a central power source for electronic devices. The fuel-cell research complements the C5ISR Center’s concurrent work to modernize the CWB with advanced materials. Researchers are continuing SWPG design modifications to improve performance of the prototypes with an emphasis on size and weight reductions, according to Christopher Hurley, chief of the Center’s Tactical Power Branch. Soldiers on 72-hour missions could save 12 pounds in battery weight under normal power draws with current prototypes.

ADDITIONAL ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING SUPPORT ARE THE ARMY’S PROJECT MANAGER INTEGRATED VISUAL AUGMENTATION SYSTEM, DEVCOM SOLDIER CENTER, THE FBI AND THE NATIONAL DEFENSE CENTER FOR ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT. “A key to enhancing our fuel-cell development is placing different prototypes in the hands of Soldiers during field exercises,” Hurley said. “C5ISR Center engineers have been side-by-side with Soldiers to gain feedback during the Army Expeditionary Warrior Experiment in 2020 and 2021 with plans for 2022. The Soldier touch points are an invaluable resource in our development process so we can immediately turn around and incorporate their evaluations into our hardware systems.”
