Volunteering in the Eastern Region 2025

Volunteering in

the Eastern Region in 2025

Introduction

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.”
— Oscar Wilde

Volunteering is an essential part of belonging to your community. Volunteers deliver vital services to communities in the Eastern Region including emergency management, tourism, health services, aged care, animal welfare, environmental care, arts and culture, sports, material aid and food relief to name just a few areas of our community life. This magazine showcases the organisations and programs in the east who are there to support individuals wanting to volunteer and organisations needing support with their volunteer workforces.

We are incredibly lucky to have Council funded Volunteer Resource Services in Boroondara, Manningham and Knox and now a Virtual Volunteer Resource Service operating in Maroondah and Whitehorse in response to the defunding of Volunteer Resource Centres by the Commonwealth government in 2020.

Volunteer Resource Centres [VRC] had been funded by the Commonwealth for over 40 years assisting people to find the right volunteer role and assisting organisations to find and retain their volunteers. They were there to support you. The loss of the Eastern Volunteers [now known as EV Strengthening Communities] VRC in 2020 has had a significant impact on our volunteer workforces in the east. After 2020 people were still coming to EV seeking to navigate into volunteering roles and community groups still required support. The Virtual VRS was built to respond to these gaps and working in conjunction with the Council funded Volunteer Resource Services we fill this gap in 2025 for the Eastern Region.

I encourage you to contact your local service and get involved in volunteering in 2025.

EV Strengthening Communities is also the lead in a Commonwealth initiative to assist organisations to be more inclusive with their volunteer workforces. It’s called the Volunteer Management Activity 5 or VMA5 and it’s a vital part of the volunteering story in 2025. If you work in an organisation that is inclusive or know of one then we want to hear your story and we would encourage you to get involved in the Inclusive Volunteering Awards. If you are working toward being more inclusive in your volunteering program then our Volunteer Resource Services have workshops to assist you to prepare your organisation. We all look forward to supporting volunteers and volunteer workforces in the eastern region in 2025.

EV Strengthening Communities

Virtual Volunteer Resource Service

From January 2025 the Virtual Volunteering Navigation hub is operating in Maroondah, Whitehorse and Manningham Local Government areas.

We call this our Volunteer Ecosystem and it is managed by EV Strengthening Communities formerly Eastern Volunteers. It provides the volunteering infrastructure in local government areas. [LGA’s].

The ecosystem contains 3 elements:

1 Online Volunteer Navigation Hub — powered by volunteers helping others into volunteering.

2 Learning Management System with modules to assist volunteers to be successful, to promote inclusion and diversity, and develop bespoke regional modules to assist with capacity building of organisations and community groups.

3 Online Volunteering Communities of Practice — supporting big and small organisations, community and sporting groups at the local level.

This system is designed to be rolled out in LGAs and works with volunteering support services where they exist.

Finding the Right Volunteer Role for You:

The online Volunteer Navigation Hub (VNH) in partnership with SeekVolunteer assists people to navigate into volunteering opportunities in their local communities by providing online in person assessment, referral and placement services. These assessment and referrals are provided by trained volunteers. This platform was launched in May 2024 People access the  Hub online via a QR code or connected websites (eg ev.org.au; SeekVolunteer, some local government websites).

Being Supported with my Volunteer Workforce:

The EV Learning and Support hub offers online training and support for volunteers and organisations / community groups through engaging and interactive online modules based on best practice in teaching and learning.

Modules on the EV Learning and Support hub are presented in three pathways specifically designed to support: (i) organisations, (ii) leaders and boards and (iii) individuals. Module examples: preparing to volunteer, disability inclusion in the workplace, governance and management. These are designed to prevent duplication with other platforms and can develop locally bespoke modules which support regional communities of volunteering.

Connecting

with other organisations in my region who utilise volunteer workforces

EV Volunteering Communities of Practice [CoP]

The CoP offers a hybrid model of organisational networking by supporting face-2-face and online volunteering network meetings. The CoP platform brings organisations and community groups utilising volunteers together around key issues of change and inclusive volunteering. Each CoP will be established within local communities/regions to ensure local and themed forums. EV trains local organisations to moderate the CoP to ensure local ownership and the integrity of place-based approaches.

The capacity of the platform includes forums, chat spaces, document storage and local news/events promotion. Organisations and people can stay connected on all things volunteering in their communities in an ongoing meaningful way. In addition, the model enables each local CoP to connect and share with CoP’s from other regions. This will promote regionally based collaboration for volunteering.

Interested in becoming a volunteer assessor with the virtual VRS?

Are you looking for a rewarding volunteer role that helps people navigate their way into a suitable volunteer role which matches their needs? We want to chat with you if this sounds like you.

You don't have to give us loads of time and you can do this from home or at our Ringwood base. You will talk to people about their hopes for volunteering and help them to assess what might be suitable volunteering roles which meet their available time, interests and skills. You will gain invaluable assessment

skills yourself and this would suit students in particular who have assessment as part of their future professional roles. It would also suit someone who has great communication skills and real drive to make a difference in their community. Contact us: volunteering@ev.org.au

Manningham Volunteer Resource Service

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
— Winston Churchill

EV Strengthening Communities in partnership with Manningham City Council run the Manningham Volunteer Resource Service (MVRS) until June 2025 when the contract ceases. The MVRS supports Manningham residents to find volunteer opportunities locally and provide support for volunteer organisations in Manningham.

In 2024 we supported 195 people into volunteering, held 26 promotional events and launched the Volunteer Ambassador program. We published the third State of Volunteering in Manningham Report and reported the results to Manningham Councillors.

Anyone who works or lives in Manningham can access the Virtual Volunteer Navigation Hub to access our support in finding volunteer opportunities. Organisations utilising volunteer workforces with paid workforces or on their own can receive support by accessing our free online modules on our portal learning.ev.org.au/. To receive access to the modules, you will need to register a free account and request for the access code by emailing us: volunteering@ev.org.au

Organisations can also attend capacity-building workshops and events and participate in network meetings with other volunteer involving organisations.

EV Strengthening Communities provides regular free workshops, cultural awareness training sessions and Volunteer Community Network meetings.

Volunteer Management Activity (VMA) 5

What is the VMA?

The Volunteer Management Activity is designed to increase opportunities for people to participate in the social and economic life of their broader community through volunteering.

Through the Volunteer Management Activity, the Australian Government Department of Social Services funds peak bodies to:

1. Break down barriers to volunteering for government identified priority groups:

• People living with disability;

• First Nations Peoples;

• Newly arrived migrants;

• Vulnerable women;

• Young people aged 12–18;

• People who are unemployed.

2. Deliver online services to build the capacity of volunteer-involving organisations including:

• Best practice recruitment and training of volunteers;

• Best practice strategies for supporting and retaining volunteers;

• Best practice volunteer management;

• Provision of information, tools, training and resources including regulatory obligations and risk management.

Volunteering Victoria offered funding to the sector for four-year grants to break down barriers for the priority groups.

EV Strengthening Communities is the Eastern Metropolitan Region member of the VMA Network and employs a project worker for 15 hours a week, to work directly with organisations who are looking to be more inclusive of all volunteers.

If you are looking to build capacity of an organisation that involves volunteers in this work or for face-to-face assistance in breaking down barriers in any or all of the identified priority groups, please email volunteering@ev.org.au

Inclusive Volunteering Awards and Conference 2024

In 2022 EV Strengthening Communities (VMA5 Lead) met with key priority group stakeholders to address the objective of building capacity within Volunteer Involving Organisations (VIO’s) to deliver inclusive volunteering opportunities.

The regional strategy developed included the delivery of the Inclusive Volunteering Awards to celebrate VIO best practice and to establish peer-based learning on inclusion within the Eastern region. The inaugural Inclusive Volunteering Awards debuted on 1 May 2024, and were presented at the IVA conference which was attended by 120 people.

There were 28 applications from a diverse range of VIO’s at various stages of implementing inclusive volunteering programs. There were 8 organisations who received an award for being an Inclusive Volunteering Workplace for 2024. The judging panel assessed these organisations, as having met 80% or more of the selection criteria. These 8 presented their work at the Awards conference.

8 Awarded Inclusive Volunteering workplaces for 2024 are (in alphabetical order):

• Asylum Seeker Resource Centre

• Baptcare

• Feed One Feed All

• Foothills Community Care Inc.

• Melbourne AMEP Volunteer Tutor Scheme

• Newhope Baptist Church

• Puffing Billy Railway

• Wellways Australia

In addition, the following organisations received a certificate for working towards being an Inclusive workplace for 2024 (in alphabetical order):

• Australia Chin Community (Eastern Melbourne) Inc.

• Ben’s Place

• Benwerren

• Carenet

• Community First Responders Foundation Ltd

• Ferntree Gully Tennis Club

• Living and Learning at Ajani Inc

• Manningham Walking Group For Carers

• Maroondah Winter Shelter

• Melbourne All-Abilities Lions Club

• MiCare Ltd

• Mooroolbark Community Garden

• Mountain District Radio Inc 3MDR

• MVC Boxing

• Neuma Church

• Ringwood Church of Christ

• Temple Society AustraliaCHAMPION Community Hub

• The Boroondara Family Network

• Women Support Incorporated

• Yarra Ranges Council TAC L2P Program

Each organisation received 2 decals for their organisation [depending upon the status they attained] to display and a certificate of attainment. The feedback from participants at the event was overwhelmingly positive and inspirational — that “hearing the stories of how VIO’s developed their programs to become inclusive was just inspirational”.

We work with all award winners to highlight their great work and share their journeys to celebrate and inspire others to become more inclusive in their volunteer programs.

“The energy in the room was electric and conversations buzzing with hope. As a migrant woman of colour and faith, I find it heart warming that the messages of Diversity and Inclusion are meaningful. That we are on the path of reaching out to the Hardly Reached Voices rather than dismissing as Hard To Reach. That we are being flexible, adapting to all ages, genders, abilities, faiths and cultures, being truly intersectional. That we welcome all Volunteers as having a seat on the table, treating each other with respect.”

“This was a great inaugural event to recognise the work organisations are doing to be inclusive. It was great that all nominees were awarded and recognised. It was great to network with other organisations and to learn about their achievements through their presentations. Overall it was a great award ceremony to attend and look forward to attending the next“

“Really impressed with the day, found the keynote engaging and the organisations who gave presentations were inspiring, provided information from varied perspectives and I think each person in the room would have gained some practical knowledge to take back to their organisation. It was also clear that the event was extremely well organised, kudos to the team”

We are looking for passionate people that are currently volunteering or have a solid history of volunteering, to help us start meaningful conversations in your existing networks.

EV Volunteer Ambassadors

Are you our next Volunteer Ambassador?

Volunteer Ambassadors are the heartbeat of our communities!

Ambassadors are highly engaged, committed, and experienced volunteers already making an impact in their local community. You are passionate about improving outcomes for people, building communities and overcoming barriers to volunteer ensuring equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

We want to hear from you!

At EV we are building our Ambassador Community to be able to share messages about volunteering and honouring the values of equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Volunteering provides a safe and supported opportunity to learn new skills, gain meaningful work experience, learn workplace culture, build language skills, share knowledge and provide social connection within community.

The program aims to reduce barriers to volunteering by engaging volunteer ambassadors to be able to share information within their current networks, identify people that may benefit from volunteering and assist people with the initial connection to the EV volunteering program. We will take it from there.

The Volunteer Ambassador Role

This is a flexible role that requires a small commitment of 4 hours per month — this can be applied flexibility by:

• Advocating for volunteering within your community and social networks promoting messages supplied by EV.

• Participating in events of your choosing hosted by EV to promote volunteer participation.

• Attending a meeting every 3 months in person or online to discuss new messaging and provide feedback on community responses to volunteering campaigns.

• Promote volunteering on your social media accounts (desirable).

If you would like to become our next ambassador, please email us at volunteering@ev.org.au

EV Community Transport

Care to get you there…

EV Community Transport runs a fleet of cars and small buses dedicated to the community. Our volunteers, like Barb (pictured above with client Audrey), drive the elderly and people living with mild disability. We take people to a range of appointments, social events, shops and more.

Our drivers keep clients like Audrey connected with their locality in a safe and comfortable way. We help people to stay independent and live in their homes for longer; all of which leads to a happier, healthier life.

EV volunteers tell us driving is an extremely rewarding role.

As Barb says, “You always go home knowing and feeling you’ve made a difference. Clients are so appreciative and grateful for the support.”

“We have a great office, depot and driver team”, says Barb, “I support in the office too and I really enjoy the friendly team environment; we’re all doing something worthwhile.”

If you’re interested in volunteering — EV Community Transport welcomes positive people who like a chat and communicate with empathy and patience. You must hold a current drivers’ license with a good driving history.

“You always go home knowing and feeling you’ve made a difference. Clients are so appreciative and grateful for the support.”

Barb (EV Community Transport volunteer)

EV is compliant with Aged Care Standards, so we conduct police and children’s worker checks. Our drivers are trained by us in First Aid and get valuable experience and training in the care and support sector.

EV Community Transport is based in Ringwood and serves the entire Eastern Metropolitan region.

For more information on volunteering, please call EV Community Transport on 9870 7822.
