CORNEAL TRANSPLANTS

Corneal Transplant Clinic with Eversight Vision and Loyola University: Thanks to Dr. León’s management and Dr. Bregni’s coordination, we held a corneal transplant clinic, benefiting 10 patients on the waiting list. We used tissue donated by the Eversight Corneal Bank in Chicago, demonstrating our commitment to vision recovery and improving the quality of life of our patients.

INNOVACIÓN

GLOBAL INNOVATION IN OPHTHALMIC RESEARCH:

JOINING FORCES TO COMBAT EPIDEMICS

In an unprecedented collaborative effort, researchers and professionals from around the world are revolutionizing the study of conjunctivitis epidemics. Thanks to the pioneering work of Dr. Mario Renato Papa and Santiago Yee of Visualiza in Guatemala, along with Dr. Francis Price of the Price Vision Group in Indiana, USA, capriCORN samples have been sent to UCSF for advanced sequencing.

These efforts not only promise significant advances in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, but also reflect our commitment to global innovation and scientific collaboration.

Dr. Thuy Doan, a distinguished member of the Proctor Laboratory, is personally supervising the sequencing of these samples, marking a milestone in our quest to better understand the spatial and temporal patterns of the infectious agents involved..

El estudio SCORPIO, un proyecto multicéntrico international, seeks not only to identify the

pathogens responsible for conjunctivitis epidemics, but also to characterize the evolution of their genomes and define effective immune responses at a global level.

VIRTUAL SIMULATOR FOR EYE SURGERY

Drs. Lilyan León and Zenia Sandoval traveled to the Mexican Institute of Ophthalmology (IMO) in Querétaro, Mexico, as part of a partnership with Helpmesee. During their visit, the doctors received training to become instructors of the innovative Virtual Simulator for Eye Surgery, a high-tech tool that is revolutionizing surgical teaching in ophthalmology.

The simulator, which offers an extremely realistic virtual experience, allows students to safely perform eye surgeries without risk to patients. This type of technology is crucial in the training of future ophthalmologists, as it allows them to hone their skills, make mistakes, and learn from them without negative consequences. Furthermore, the tool facilitates the repetition of procedures, which improves student dexterity and confidence.

It is important to note that this simulator is one of only five in the world, placing Visualiza in a privileged position globally.

INNOVATION AT THE SERVICE OF OUR PATIENTS

As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we have implemented telemedicine services in our Vision Centers. This advancement allows us to offer quality ophthalmological care remotely, leveraging digital tools to evaluate, diagnose, treat, and monitor our patients without requiring them to travel to our hospitals.

Through virtual consultations and remote diagnoses, we utilize patient-submitted photographs and image analysis to provide timely and accurate care. This asynchronous approach facilitates access to eye care, especially for those facing geographic barriers or mobility limitations.

Telemedicine not only allows us to be closer to our patients but also optimizes time and resources, promoting more agile and efficient care. We remain committed to offering innovative and accessible eye care services, providing solutions that adapt to our patients’ current needs.

MEDICAL DEVELOPMENT

Commitment to medical innovation

On our path to ophthalmic excellence, constant updating is key.

From March 6 to 8, our specialists, Dr. Esperanza Castillo (anterior segment, cornea, and refractive surgery) and our medical director, Dr. Lucía Silva (glaucoma and cataract surgery), participated in the ALACCSA-R congress in Lima, Peru.

During this event, they immersed themselves in new surgical techniques and the latest advances in ophthalmologic clinical management.

In addition, our Executive Management team had the opportunity to exchange experiences and provide advice to our Global Sight Initiative mentee, Clínica Divino Niño de Jesús.

We continue to focus on growth, innovation, and continuous improvement to provide the best care to our patients.

Commitment to Ophthalmological Excellence

At Visualiza, we continue to advance medical innovation and the professional growth of our team, reinforcing our commitment to excellence in ophthalmic care. Below is a summary of recent academic and clinical activities at our center:

Continuing Medical Education (CME) Meeting on Glaucoma:

Dr. Gabriela Martínez led a specialized talk on the management of steroid-induced glaucoma and ocular hypertension, as part of our CME program. This session provided an update and expanded understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of this complex ocular condition.

ALCON Training for Central America:

We received a visit from an ALCON specialist, who shared valuable recommendations on patient selection and the optimal use of advanced technological platforms to improve surgical outcomes in glaucoma. This update strengthens our ability to offer more precise and effective treatments.

Glaucoma Surgery Training:

Dr. Elena Arrondo and scrub nurse Marta Oller joined us for intensive surgical training focused on advanced techniques such as NPPE with a Snopper device and PAUL device placement.

Glaucoma specialists and nursing staff received specialized training, expanding our surgical options for managing this complex condition.

International Exchange with the Divino Niño Clinic in Peru:

Drs. Castro and Velásquez, from the Divino Niño Clinic in Peru, completed a rotation at our facilities to learn about our approach to medical and surgical management, as well as the implementation of telemedicine and referrals from vision centers. This exchange strengthens our collaborative network and enriches the experience of all involved.

These activities reflect our constant efforts to innovate, update knowledge, and strengthen our clinical capacity to provide cutting-edge ophthalmic care. At Visualiza, we continue to build a healthier and more hopeful future for our patients and the global medical community.

OPTOMETRY

Training for optometrists

During the month of February, optometrists at the Vision Centers began training in intraocular pressure measurement. This training, led by Samuel Alonzo and accompanied by Amado Cabrera, has provided timely and effective support, allowing optometrists to accurately measure pressure and ensuring the effectiveness of the exams for the telemedicine project, detecting early possible glaucoma or increased pressure due to medication use, and monitoring postoperative and high-risk patients. We would like to congratulate the optometrists for their dedication and effort, and also

highlight the exceptional supervision of Dr. Cristina Cabezas, who maintains constant communication to follow up with patients via telemedicine.

This approach allows patients’ visual needs to be met in a more personal and accessible
