Welcome to the first 2012 edition of DV8 Oxford! We hope that you are all embracing the New Year and have fully recovered from the Xmas party season... January can be a depressing month, especially looking at the bank balance after buying all those presents - and one too many big nights out. Luckily for us, the DV8 team has been kept busy with a whole host of awesome events in Oxford to banish the January blues!

At the Living Room, this month, we celebrated the official launch of the Miss Oxfordshire 2012 regional qualifier of Miss England with a whole host of hopeful beauty queens. We have to admit, this pageant is always inked into our calendars (maybe one year, we might even make the judging panel!). We were also lucky enough to get to sample Lola Lo's new cocktail menu, in advance of their big re-launch weekend on the 10th Feb. The menu has been revamped, restyled, retikified, and reinvented in some new funky glasses, you can get a sneak preview on page 34.

This edition of DV8 is not only full of great reviews, but is also the opportunity to get your hands on an incredible prize, a hair makeover worth £300 for you and a friend at The Hair Gallery in Kidlington. Check out page 4 for details on how to enter this unmissable competition. February brings love in the air. We wonder how many valentines cards we will rack up? Perhaps we should warn the postman! We hope you have a fun month and, if you are on the lookout for luuurve, that Cupid brings someone hot your way! If not, you’ll always have us! Lots of love,

MOJITO FUN AT LOLA’s

If you had a straw poll of what is our favourite cocktail around the DV8 office, you would probably find that hands down - the answer would be the classic Mojito. (What’s there not to like…. Lime… Sugar…. Ample rum… And, not to forget, that o-so delicious mint). We were delighted to find out that Oxford’s number one, tiki inspired hot spot, Lola Lo are offering you a fabulous chance to have your own Mojito station to share with your friends. Time Warp at Lava Ignite offered such a variety of music it was impossible to decide which of the 5 rooms we should stick to. So, with a few regular trips to the bar for fortification, we hit each one! Feeling nostalgic, we partied to some of our favourite songs of all time! We love the events T.O.R put on and we are looking forward to the next one. We hope it isn’t too far away!

hristmas felt like it was a long time coming; and, all-too quickly, seemed to pass by. The extended post turkey sleep probably made time go faster! After all the presents were opened, all the crackers pulled and the inevitable hangovers slept off, what was there to do? Well, we were pleased to find that Lava Ignite and DV8 favourites T.O.R Events were hosting a Boxing Day extravaganza, taking us through a time warp of our favourite music and tunes! Luckily, we were not the only ones in the mood to party, as crowds turned out to have a good time!

NEW YEARS EVE @ CAMERA

W

hat is the sign of a good New Years Eve party? Here at DV8 we have a few requirements.... Good music, good drinks and good-looking people! When we headed to Camera on New Years Eve we were not disappointed! The queue went around the block, which must have meant this was the party to be at! Sadly, we missed out on the champagne and canapes reception (we spent too long getting ready!). But we are assured it was the perfect start to the night.

With DJ Furry spinning the decks with the best in Funky House, R’n’B and Chart, this was a night that was going to please everyone and before we knew it midnight had come around. At least midnight didn’t signify the end of the night, we were enjoying bringing in 2012 in style too much! Let the countdown to the next New Years Eve begin.... In the meantime, we might enjoy a few more nights in Camera.

….It’s been quite a slog but finally Oxford Tattoo are fully up and running and ready to provide you with the best in tattooing, piercing, body jewellery and laser tattoo removal. Marc is the longest established and most experienced provider of Laser Tattoo Removal in Oxfordshire. From small beginnings based at a studio in Kidlington he has now opened his own city centre studio and has a substantial and ever growing client base. Laser Tattoo Removal has established itself as the preferred method of tattoo removal or reduction among professionals in this industry. The technology is well proven and has shown itself to be by far the best method for the removal of tattoos. Our tattoo removal laser, the Sapphire 2 from ADL is an industry standard laser, continuing to provide the best and most reliable results to the professional tattoo artists of the UK & Ireland. The Sapphire 2 is a frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser and is fully CE regulation compliant. People have many reasons for wanting to reduce or remove tattoos. The most common are changes in circumstances. Whether your tattoo is a reminder of a relationship that didn't work out, an act of youthful rebellion or you want to change career and your

and persistence the majority of customers can experience complete removal. I’m often asked “Does it hurt”. All clients have different tolerance levels when it comes to pain. Many clients compare the feeling to an elastic band being snapped against the area. It’s uncomfortable but easily managed by most people. The process is very quick and we can break at any time. We have a number of customers having tattoos removed from their faces or other sensitive areas and even these can easily be tolerated. Another main concern is about scarring. With all medical procedures involving the skin there is a chance of scarring, however it is incredibly unlikely using our industry standard laser technology and utilizing the many years of experience we have that any scarring will occur. There are a number of factors that influence the number of treatments necessary to remove a tattoo they include the tattoo age, the type of ink, the amount of ink, the depth and the colours used. However the most important factor is the laser technology being used to remove the tattoo. There are many cheap imported or old lasers out there, these can not provide the same results as

visible tattoos are causing problems or you just want to fade away an old tattoo to have something new; we have the laser tattoo removal options that you need. Do not hesitate to contact us for more information about the tattoo removal services that we offer.

our industry standard laser and have many risks associated with their use. There is no need to take these risks. We are thoroughly trained, have the industry standard technology and can provide the service very affordably. At your free initial consultation we will give you a full appraisal including an estimation of the number of treatments necessary. A word on the alternatives; There are other ways that a tattoo can be removed. Over the years we have been providing laser tattoo removal we have seen many clients who have attempted to have their tattoos removed using a chemical tattoo removal treatment. These treatments involve a variety of chemicals being tattooed into the existing inked area. These treatments inevitably produce significant scar tissue which can be worse and more unsightly than the original tattoo. Dermabrasion is also an option; this is where the tattoo is removed by scraping away at the skin to remove the ink. Again, scarring is significant and the result, more often than not, looks worse than the original tattoo. Laser Tattoo Removal is the only real option to be considered. A consultation will inform you in detail about cost, which starts at £30 per treatment, the process and anything else you want to know. Consultations are free; come and have a chat with us.

So, how does it work, what do es the treatment involve and what are the results? The laser is aimed at the inked area and when fired causes a reaction in the ink which explodes the ink particles into microscopic pieces which your natural immune defence washes away, causing the tattoo to simply fade away over a number of visits. Some brighter colours don’t absorb the energy as well and take a little longer to break down, but in the majority of cases there is no trace of a tattoo after 5-15 sessions. The ink used in your tattoo can slow the process. Colours such as black, red, deep blue or dark orange absorb the energy well and quickly fade. Bright whites, greens and light blues break down slowly and therefore require more treatment sessions. Amateur or home made tattoos tend to use weak inks and sit close under the top layer of skin, so are very easy to treat. Professional tattoos use very permanent inks and tend to be deep in the skin. Some tattoos can be very difficult to remove but with patience

Throughout the evening the live music ensured that people were entertained and the enthusiasm of the performers was infectious. It was the perfect environment for us to kick back with a tasty mojito and catch up with friends, making the most of the final minutes of 2011. When the big moment came, everyone was united in the euphoria of greeting 2012. Glasses clinked around the room and loud cheer went up. Whether they chose to toast the moment with champagne, beer or perhaps a cheeky jägerbomb, people were having a great time. Indeed, there was something about enjoying the celebrations from behind the mystery of a mask that made the whole event even more intriguing and memorable. There’s one thing for sure, we’re already looking forward to what The Living room serves up for New Year’s Eve 2012. DV8 OXFORD /// FEBRUARY 2012

e at DV8 are always searching for interesting ways to welcome in the New Year, so when word got to us of The Living Room’s plans to hold a masquerade ball, we had to check out what all the fuss was about. As always, when we turned up with masks at the ready, there was a relaxed vibe around the room. We were happy to mingle with the glamorous, enthusiastic crowd and take in the excited buzz that was already building. After gratefully accepting a free glass of champagne we sat down to choose from the wide range of cocktails on offer, surrounded by people holding black, gold and exotically decorated masks.

ith a whirlwind of events to choose from on New Year’s Eve, we really wanted to try something a little bit different, we fancied some quality live music, featuring all of our favourite classic anthems. The Junction was our answer… Swiftly becoming a favourite of DV8’s in 2011, we loved the variety of bands that took to the stage and played the tunes that made the last few decades so great. Lucas was the name of the band who brought in 2012, and they were awesome! The band whipped up a fantastic party atmosphere as revelers took to the floor to dance the night away to all the classic tunes that we know and love.

New Years Eve at one of Oxford’s finest music venues was a brilliant way to end 2011 and welcome what promises to be a fantastic new year! (and not to mention the complimentary cocktail on arrival that’s how we like to roll here at DV8).

Also available on the night were 10 opportunities to win a share of £500 of Wahoo prizes! (If we won, we had agreed to probably put the money towards creating the biggest Jager train! Sadly that just wasn’t going to happen!). One of the best things about New Years Eve is the countdown to Midnight. It’s the point of the night. Right? Wahoo welcomed in 2012 with a fantastic glitter cannon at Midnight to the extreme pleasure of the crowds! As always, Wahoo provided the right mix of music with something for everyone that got the party into full swing, not only up to midnight, but also through the early hours of 2012. Wahoo always proves a great atmosphere and fantastic drinks deals and not to mention some of the most fun theme nights that are to be had anywhere in Oxford. MISS OXFORD 2012 lAUNCH NIGHT

W

e love the annual tradition of Miss Oxford. This year, the launch night leading to discover who will win the coveted crown kicked off at the Living Room with a reception that welcomed new, potential, Miss Oxfords to come along, learn a little bit more abut the competition, and meet up with the current Miss Oxford, the lovely Kirsty Beer and former Miss England, Laura Coleman. We caught up with Kirsty and found out about the responsibility of having the title of Miss Oxford. (And there is a lot more to the job than just looking fabulous!) She talked to us about the potential that winning the title has, and how some winners even make it their career!

The finals for the competition will be on Wednesday 13th March at the Living Room Oxford. It is a date that is firmly in our diaries and we suggest that you ink it in as well! If you would like further information, or are interested in entering the competition, you can do so at www.missengland.info and check out the Oxford heats.

She is a working-class girl of principle and ambition who dreams of making the world a better place. He is a wealthy charmer who dreams that the world will be his playground.

FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS DVD Release: Feb 6th Dylan (Justin Timberlake) and Jamie (Mila Kunis) think it’s going to be easy to add the simple act of sex to their friendship, despite what Hollywood romantic comdies would have them believe. They soon discover however that getting physical really does always lead to complications.

MAN ON A LEDGE

DV8 OXFORD /// FEBRUARY 2012

GREAT EXPECTATIONS DVD Release: Out Now Ona cold winter's day, orphan Pip has a terrifying encounter with an escaped convict. This chance meeting is to set Pip on a whirlwind adventure all the way to becoming the top of society, and of course meeting the love of his life…. Estella. Pip must first face an adventure of heartbreak, treachery and mystery. WOMAN IN BLACK FEBRUARY 10TH A young lawyer travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals. GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE FEBRUARY 17TH As Johnny Blaze hides out in Eastern Europe, he is called upon to stop the devil, who is trying to take human form. CARNAGE FEBRUARY 3RD Two pairs of parents meet after their sons are involved in a fight, the meeting progresses into increasingly childish behavior, chaos and carnage. MAN ON A LEDGE FEBRUARY 3RD This Hollywood thriller starts with a simple, gripping premise. A man, Sam Worthington, stands on a ledge, threatening to jump…

It is officially the month of lurrrrrrrrrrrrve, and Oxford is no exception to the rule.

Though this year we’ll be without the Big Bang’s classic anti-valentines poetry competition (RIP), if you need an outlet for your anti-V-Day rage you can snap yourself up a t shirt proclaiming your hate of love to the world from Squidoo. If you do fancy doing something romantic on February 14th, options stretch from the sublime to the ridiculous. For those hoping to fall in love, go through the medium of the stomach with a Love Loaves baking workshop in Wolvercote (www.loveloaves.biz), let your feet do the talking with Salsa Candente in Witney (www.salsacandente.com ) or see one of two love-themed shows at the Burton Taylor Studio.

If you are feeling traditionally lovey dovey (and hungry), Waterperry Gardens have a set lunch at their tea shop for £13.95 which includes a free stroll through the ornamental gardens, there is Mediterranean passion at La Tasca at Oxford Castle with a £14.95 valentines tapas menu, or push the boat out and ‘Make Suite Love’ at Malmaison Oxford, where champagne on ice, chocolatedipped strawberries, aromatic massage oil and a champagne breakfast, all served in the privacy of your own suite, will set you back £225. None of those take your fancy? Then follow my lead and blow a little bit of cash on ingredients for your other half’s favourite dinner. There are recipe ideas online at my food blog (http://themunchies.posterous.com). That way, you get to stay in and curl up together AND you don’t get overcharged for the privilege. Whatever you end up getting up to, here’s a big bit of love from me!

You can catch Sophie weekday mornings from 7am hosting The Morning Glory on Glide FM 107.9 t

COCKTAILS OF THE MONTH

Lola Lo has lead the way in fantastic tiki inspired cocktails, so we were really excited to be invited along to check out some of the new cocktails that are being introduced to the menu. Included in our taste test were:

DADDY ZOMBIE The Daddy Zombie features the allnew, Lola Lo’s own, Grog. A silkysmooth blend of premium rum. This is of course the classic Tiki inspired cocktail and no visit to Lola’s would be complete without buying one!

THE HIBISCUS Sometimes you want a cocktail with a fruity twist? This cocktail tastes slightly like the classic old skool drink, Munch Bunch (but obviously a more adult version!)

THE PUFFA We absolutely loved the puffa fish glasses and thought the idea of drinking out of a puffa fish was awesome! This sharer cocktail is for those of you who are fans of more creamy cocktails.

DV

BIG TIME GIRL No cocktail list is complete without something on the menu that offers a few sparkles (and enough fruit to tick your 5 a day!) THE CHAIRMAN The Chairman is the big daddy of the new cocktails available! With a healthy base of Chairman’s Reserve Rum, some delicious fruit juices, topped with (the very in vogue) ginger beer… We loved it!

BARTENDER OF THE MONTH JAMIE CUMMINGS LOLA LO

DV8 OXFORD /// FEBRUARY 2012

How long have you worked as a bar tender? I have been bartending for the last 3 1/2 years, including about 6 months in Thailand before working in a few bars in Oxford. Can you flair? Working flair... It looks really good and speeds up the process of bartending. Saying that, I like to practise and would like to develop my skills. I think it is important to provide a good decent drink. How many cocktails does Lola Lo offer? We have a lot on offer and have just introduced an entire new range. (“Check out the review above!). “There is, definitely, something for everybody. Which cocktail would you recommend from the menu? The Zombie! “It is the original tiki drink and it normally packs a punch! What is your favourite thing about working at Lola’s? The large amounts of rum that we get in!” “Also, I like the environment. “It’s like working somewhere that is between a bar and a club and that medium is great fun to work for.. What is your favourite thing about Oxford nightlife? The variety available. Considering Oxford is quite a small city, there are lots of fantastic bars and it isn’t hard to get a decent drink!”

VANITY AFFAIR

DV

This month, Ma trix Artistic Director Anne Veck iis giving the guys some helpful insights into ma king the mo st of yo ur ha ir. S o, read on if you want to add a little colour, have longer locks o r a re looking to get an on trend loo k for 2012.

Colour for men? Yes you can!

Going long?

When it comes to hair colour, men usually run a mile. They think brassy bleach like Jedward, but nothing could be further from the truth! Colour has developed so much, that a change in hair colour today isn’t about a dramatic hair change- it’s more about subtly and discreetly altering your natural hair tone, ever so slightly, to enhance your best features. Still in doubt? Look at George Lamb – he stands out from the crowd with his flash of grey, which is dyed, may I add, and the lovely Olly Murs went from a nondescript mousey brown to a rich chestnut that makes his thinning hair look thicker. Perhaps you’re looking to add richness to your colour or get subtle, surfer-style highlights. Done correctly, colour can bring your look forward for 2012, and it doesn’t take much to maintain it, simply pop into our salon for a free consultation where we’ll be able to sort you out with a low key, high impact look for the new season.

If you’re going to wear your hair long, make sure it looks thick, healthy and shiny – no scraggily, limp pony tails please! In order to achieve a mane of hair to rival Ollie Locke from Made in Chelsea, you have to keep the ends neat and tidy with regular trims and treat hair to a deep, intense treatment at least once a week. Long hair usually requires minimum styling effort but it’s important not to overload the hair with too much product which will weigh it down and leave hair looking greasy. I recommend products such as “Thermo Glide" which will help blow dry the hair smooth adding a great protection against the heat of the hairdryer.

With shorter hair, the trend for 2012 seems to see the return of a sophisticated style; with strong side partings and deep waves over the forehead that takes its inspiration from hit TV shows such as Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men.

Forget bed heads and unkempt manes; think suave and sophisticated, clean and cared for. Gels or pomades give flawless finishes with a healthy shine and keeps everything under perfect control. For this I recommend "Quick and Dirty" from the Design Pulse range by Matrix. A matt texturising paste, perfect to define and separate strands, with a long lasting control. For those who prefer something lighter we have "Messy Couture" which creates a pliable texture with medium hold. DV8 readers! WHATEVER THE SEASON, THE WEATHER CAN BE TOUGH ON YOUR SKIN. DV8 HAS TESTED SOME PRODUCTS FROM SK:N TO ENSURE YOUR SKIN IS LOOKING AS HEALTHY AND RADIENT AS POSSIBLE

Sk:n clinics are a leading cosmetic skin and beauty clinic, offering a wide range of procedures tand treatments to achieve the skin you want. If you are looking for a treatment that you can carry out at home, then look no further than the new range of SK:N products that are available at an affordable price to help you maintain your skin and avoid the damaging effects of the day to day life. We here at DV8 were very excited to test drive some of these products. s:kn Repair & Protect Range s:kn’s new products include treatments branded Cleansing & Exfoliating, Repair & Protect, Anti-Blemish, Anti-Ageing and Corrective. If you are looking for some daily use products, that should be part of the daily routine of any twentysomething’s skin routine, then look no further than the Cleansing & Exfoliating range. This contains anti-oxidant vitamins, A, C and E, along with evening primrose oil. Almost from the first treatment, your skin will look and feel a lot fresher – especially when coupled with the exfoliating cleanser. The cleanser contains glycolic acid, which provides a ‘mini peel’ by removing dead skin, leaving your skin feeling smoother and brighter. s:kn Anti Ageing Range Skin is constantly at the mercy of the elements, whether that be the effects of the weather (both hot and cold), or more environmental issues like the effects of city pollution. People in the UK rarely think twice about these risks especially from the UVA and UVB rays that penetrate the cloudy skies, especially in these winter months; to protect against these harmful rays a moisturiser with SPF protection is key – and s:kn can help with this too. Introducing a daily routine, with a selection of these wonderful products will keep you looking at your best; s:kn’s new range is a fantastic weapon in the antiageing armoury. Further details on the entire range are available on the sk:n website. https://www.sknclinics.co.uk/shop

You definitely have to get up and out of bed, it’s painful but works! Where can we find you out and about on a Saturday in Oxford? It depends, I usually have a few cheeky drinks at home, before going to Wahoo or Lava. I really like Thirst, the girls in there are out of this world!

2012 is here, what are you looking forward to most? It has to be the Olympics! I can’t wait, my mate got us a couple of tickets, London is going to be crazy this summer! What is your ultimate chat up line? Ha Ha, I don’t need them, it’s too cheesy. I prefer a more direct, honest approach to talking to women.
