fore word

Hello DV8 Fans,

Welcome to this new edition of DV8 Oxford. September and October is always such exciting time of year with so much going on. First up, we can officially say that the Summer is behind us, it’s time to break out the winter wardrobe we all packed away earlier this year.

So, what have we been up to? The annual St Giles fair came to town at the beginning of September, and this year they boasted all new rides that were bigger and scarier than ever before. A trip to the fair is an annual tradition that we would never want to miss, it leaves us wondering what next year will bring! Looking forward, September also welcomes students old and new back to the City for a new year of student shenanigans (and of course a little bit of studying!) September is also bringing the launch of a new exciting bar in the town, we look forward to the opening of The Junction (on Park End Street) at the end of the month, with the promise of a venue offering live music, good food and drink, it’s bound to become a regular haunt for the DV8 Staff!

We hope you enjoy this issue, with a round up of all things Oxford from the last few weeks, including the final Bank Holiday weekend of the year. It was a great few days in Oxford, it’s a shame the next Bank Holiday is so far away! See you next Month DV8 Oxford Team x

SUPER HERO CHARITY RUN

It’s not every day you see a group of Super Heroes running round Kidlington, but that’s exactly what DV8 witnessed on 6 August. As previewed in the last issue, the Six Bells pub was the start and finish line for the 2011 Super Heroes run. This year 73 dedicated people took part, including at a quick glance; several Spidermen, Catwoman, Captain America, Superman, with a Banana thrown in for

good measure, and a Ladybird holding the chequered flag. So as the runners moved from the picturesque streets to the town centre, Mario, Luigi and others carried buckets, encouraging the weekend shoppers to give generously and, in keeping with the spirit of the day, they were happy to oblige. Not forgetting of course that all the heroes were raising money

for A Teenage Cancer Trust, and running in memory of Sam Williams. All the participants went away with a medal and a certificate for completing the run and no doubt plans to take part in this fantastic event next year. What with auctions of signed football shirts still bringing in generous donations, the total raised at the time of writing this article, is an impressive £1123.

SEPT/OCT EXPOSURE

During September, the National Air Ambulance raise awareness for this essential 7 day a week, 365 days a year service by raising funds and promoting their cause with the annual National Air Ambulance Week. The Oxford Retreat will be running a special evening for the charity, whose cause is very close to the heart of owner Stuart Kerley, who himself needed their help and assistance “19 Years ago I was involved in a horrific car accident. Thanks to the speedy

ANGELS REVAMP

We really loved the contemporary decor which firmly sat nicely against the Jericho backdrop! However, we were delighted and intrigued to see that during the summer, the boutique cocktail bar had shut for a refit, As we strolled past on the (not so hot) summers days, we couldn't help but have a sneak peak in the windows to see the redevelopment, and it

DV8 OXFORD /// Sept/Oct 2011

With Jericho undertaking a redevelopment over the next few months and years, Angels has really stepped up to the plate, by now offering a sexy chique cocktail bar. Kick back and enjoy some of the delicious cocktails on in these all new surroundings. Angels has the look and feel of a bar that wouldn’t be out of place in the likes of Hollywood and New York.

The bartenders are all very experienced and will always try to get a drink to suit your personal tastes, whether that be on the menu, or if something they bespoke just for you.

This month has seen some businesses leave Jericho, but this new addition is a really great asset and confirms Jericho as the best neighbourhood to get a cocktail!

One thing not to forget, Angels is still running heavenly hour each day between 4.30 - 9.00pm so whether it is post wok drinks, pre dinner drinks or just drinks... head on down to Angels.

LIBRARY

DATING

The Brickworks on the Cowley Road finally shut its doors over the summer, it was sad to see another pub in the bohemian neighbourhood close down (especially after the near closure of the Hobgoblin). However, we here at DV8 were really excited to learn the building had a complete overhaul and was back in business with new owners under the new name of The Library. The newly refurbished bar offers a wide range of drinks, as well as DJs spinning tunes on the decks. If we see a nice Autnumnal day, then be sure to check out the garden.

Is your love life currently a bit of a disaster? are you looking to get back on the dating scene? If you are, then look no further than Glide FM's very own dating website. They will match you to like minded people and who knows it could be the start of something! We here at DV8 are big fans of different ways of meeting people, from speed dating, dating in the dark, through to dating sites (it's a great way to meet a lot of people and vet them in the privacy of your own home! T

om Cruise may now be really odd, but back in the day, he was a god when he rocked the bars of New York and the Caribbean in the film Cocktail. Growing up, we wanted to be that cool!

In Oxford we have the benefit of some of the most amazing cocktail bars in the country and this comes accompanied with some of the best bartenders in the country (some members of the DV8 staff have a list of Oxford’s sexiest bartenders!!).

Last year the living room held the first Battle of the Bartenders competition (you may remember it from the first issue of DV8 Oxford). We were really excited to learn that the followup event was being held in August, and what was more exciting, was that we here at DV8 were invited along to judge the competition (we have drunk enough cocktails in our time to self appoint ourselves as experts!) This year’s competition saw talent from two of our favourite bars, The Living Room and Thirst. We were excited to watch them go head to head in rounds of flairing ability and mixology.

The flairing was amazing fun, with bottles being flung, caught, spun, (and occasionally dropped!), each contestant chose a song to perform to, and as the songs began, the packed bar cheered, whooped and hollered to see ever more exciting moves. One of our favourites came from the Living Rooms Rich, who did a rather cool move, by piercing a can of red bull to fill the waiting glasses! After an initial round, the finalists were chosen and the outright winner was Thirsts Amero, we loved he used the prodigies ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ as the

backing track!

The Mixology competition allowed the contestants to show off their ability to mix drinks that look good and taste even better. The event was sponsored by Agwa, so the key ingredient to all the concoctions was the green spirit… We were amazed that you could do so much with it (we only ever neck shots of it with red bull!), the winner’s cocktail will be featured on the Living Room’s new signature cocktail menu at the end of the year. So congratulations to Rob and Tom whose drinks were so tasty there were joint first place winners! This experience has taught us that we would quite like to be official cocktail tasters!

Don’t worry if you missed this awesome event, we hear the next one may not be that far away. Stay up to date with the Living Room or Thirst on facebook and stay in the know!

How do you mark the closure of The Big Bang, one of most icon ic restaurants in Oxford (and a DV8 favourite)? By having a street party of course. That is exactly what Max Mason, the owner of the Jericho eatery, decided to do on 30 Augu st and we went along to sample it for ourselves. People thronged the pavement outside the row of aging b uildings whose imminent demolition is the reason for the closure. The murmur of satisfaction from the crowd was evidence enough of the quality of food that has made The Big Bang one of Oxford’s favourite restaurants. If that wasn’t enough of a clue, the long line of people eagerly waiting for their sausage from the barbeque outside the restaurant’s entrance would confirm any suspicions. The writing on the win dow may have said ‘RIP - 1 September’ but the memory of the great variety and quality of bangers and mash they cooked up over the years will live on, both with the satisfied group enjoying the farewell party on Jericho’s streets, and among many other p eople throughout Oxford. We managed to catch up with the owner, Max, just before he pulled down the sh utters on The Big Bang and locked the door for the final time‌‌‌‌.. So the Big Bang is closing, and since becoming such a large fixture on the Jericho scene, what have been your highlights? I think opening the restaurant without knowing anything about catering was the steepest learning curve. I also think the 'funeral parade', the last few weeks where

With the closing of this corner of Jericho to make way for the p lanned redevelopment, how are you feeling about this? I always manage to find myself in an exciting place at an exciting time which is always a very fortunate asset. Jericho over the last six years has really grown into a place where independence has thrived and the redevelop will bring a different character, different people and a different dynamic. Tuesday saw the street party marking the closure of the Big Bang. How do you feel it went? Tremendously! 350 people turned out! and with all good wakes, it was a celebration of all the great times people have had here. More turned out than we were expecting, initially we catered for 200, so we had to restock 3 times! How many sausages did people eat at the street party and how many sausages have been eaten since the big bang opened? I think it was about 700 sausages. In terms of how many have been served since the beginning... hmm...maybe over a million, and i think thats being conservative (thats a look of pigs!!) What is your favourite sausage? Pork and Apple by R W Hobbs

ß 6 ) $9285, 7( 5( 67$85$176 %<( 25 $8 5( 92, 5" As a restaurant that specialised in one dish, what do you think made it special and kept people coming back for more? Me!!, only joking! It's always been so much fun here, every night is different. It's also the personal service that we have always tried to offer to our diners.

the chef, he was very interesting and I have many stories about him. No one could talk to him during dinner service and we would have huge rows!! (we are thinking hells kitchen here!) Also some of the events we have put on, such as the illegal street parties, the late night jazz jams, and even a firebreather!

What's next? A man with your reputation is boun d to be doing exciting. What's in the pipeline... fast cars and faster women? First up, I am going on a trip to Vegas for a few Weeks (we at DV8 love Vegas!!). Then later in the year, I might be looking at doing a couple of pop up restaurants, maybe in the winter (watch this space), but when these appear will be a complete surprise! Hopefully this is going to add a little colour to the City.

What’s changed the most in the area since you started the restaurant? I think Jericho has been through an arc, from being really run down all the way through to being a really cool neighbourhood, I think at the moment, it’s really at it’s peak. Who knows what the future may bring.

You mentioned to us that you might be taking a trip to Las Vegas. Now that's one of DV8 's favourite places in the world. So which are you going to be betting on... red or black? Black and Number 5! If you had on p iece of advice for budding entrepreneurs out there looking to set up a business, what would it be? Bounce back, you’re always going to get hit down, find things difficult, but you need to get back on it! Also remember to 'Shout' you can never publicise yourself enough. What’s th e strangest thing that’s happened in the Big Bang since it opened? Haha, thats a good question, so many things!! I think the Big Issue seller, who was

What did you do before the Big Bang? Have you always been in the sausage game? I spent eight years as a hydrographer in the Antarctic (we had to ask what that entailed, apparently it involves looking at penguins, glaciers etc!) What will you miss most about the Big Bang? The Fun. It’s like having a dinner party for 150 people you like, every day and they pay you for it! Also Oxford has such an interesting mix of people, and i will miss them passing by. Bottega’s moving to the Iffley Road, Liscious to South Parade in Summertown, could we see the Big Bang coming back with...... a bang in the future? Watch this space, I will definitely be doing something as a pop up. People of Oxford won’t let this die, all i’m saying is watch this space, perhaps 2012 will start with a big bang!!!

T

he August Bank Holiday could only mean the return of club night promoter Ipanema Siesta to Oxford, bringing us another fantastic evening of glamour, style, and the sexiest party goers Oxford has to offer. This time we were treated to Urban Fiesta, a Virgo Special at lounge bar Roppongi.

As with previous events from Ipanema Siesta the V.I.P was fully booked with gorgeous guys and girls sipping champagne, and delving into the fantastic bottle service on offer, these people knew how to party like celebrities! We loved the extra touches, such as luxury chocolates from everyone’s favourite, Hotel Chocolat, which went down a treat! No wonder the V.I.P section was fully booked! Even those who were not in the V.I.P section were given the A-List treatment with the first 100 ladies being treated to a strawberries and champagne reception.

The club was filled with the party faithful, hitting the dancefloor to sexy beats while others scattered the bar sipping some of the finest cocktails and champagne to be had!

So what can we expect next? Stay up to date on their facebook page, however, we hear that they are planning a new event being called “From Ibiza with Love”, an Ibiza Party style, with music styles such as Commercial RnB// FunkyHouse// UK Garage theme, so watch this space

IBIZA PARTY @ LOLA LO

S

o the summer in England wasn’t anything to write home about, how many of you ditched England for the shores of the Spanish party islands? Some people at the DV8 office were lucky enough to hit the party island of Ibiza, but for those of you not lucky enough to go, Lola Lo offered a Monday night not to be missed, with an Ibiza theme.

28/08/11

In true homage to Ibiza, the club was open til 6am! It called for Tuesday off work to recover, but it was so worth it! The Monday sessions at Lola Lo were a weekly themed event, we hope they continue!

CHARITY EVENT @ LIVING ROOM

T

he Bank Holiday was also a time to kick back and relax, taking in the last part of the summer, so there was no better place to do this than at the Living Room, who hosted, Soothing Sundays up on their fabulous patio roof garden. The afternoon proved to be a musical treat of acoustic tunes from Living Room regulars, and our local talent favourites including Alex Coleman and Roby Dewan. The music was fantastic, also on offer were half price cocktails and of course the delicious Sunday Comforts food menu from the Living Room (who really wants to cook on a Sunday anyway?) and we were set for the afternoon! The festivities were for a charitable fundraiser for Nordoff Robbins, The Living Room’s charity of choice, who use musical therapy to improve the lives of many. Further information can be found at www.nordoff-robbins.org.uk We think this was a really great event in aid of a really great cause, so two thumbs up to the Living Room, be sure to look out for their other charitable events.

W

e at DV8 love a foam party, so you can imagine how excited we were when Wahoo announced that they would be hosting one. So, we put on our flip-flops and swimwear and went along to check it out.

Downstairs in the main bar it was business as usual as people had a few preliminary drinks before the main event started, making the most of Wahoo’s excellent drinks offers. Upstairs people jostled each other trying to make sure they were in the best position when the foam started. Suddenly a cannon at the front burst into life, spraying the excited crowd with a wall of foam. As we moved towards the front a group of foam-caked people pushed past laughing and already trying to get back into range. While this was going on the dj was playing some great tunes, keeping the crowd buzzing. We don’t get to go to foam parties often enough and it’s safe to say that there’s nothing like the atmosphere it creates. So the DV8 verdict? An excellent event and we hope that Wahoo host another one soon.

L

ola Lo pulled out all the stops over the Bank Holiday weekend. Starting with their weekly classic clubnights on Friday and Saturday nights, and then climaxing on the Sunday night (or Monday morning if you will) with an extra special Big Bamboo Party night with the club open all the way through til 6am which definately secured the club the title of ‘most hardcore party’. DJ C played the tunes while Bongo Alf banged away on the Bongos, creating a fun-filled night and had the dancefloor pumping all the way til dawn (literally). The good thing about Bank Holidays is that we can sleep all day.. guilt free!

St Clemen Jericho, Cowley, Summertown and of course the city centre, Oxford is certainly not short of variety when it comes to places to party, venues to be seen or even shops to wander around on a sunny after noon. One street that perhaps gets overlooked in all this is St Clements. Well, we at DV8 thought we should take a closer look, and in doing so found it has plenty to keep visitors interested. Join me for a stroll…….. Starting at the souther n edge of South Park bordered by trees and flanked by houses it doesn’t feel like you’re only a few hundred yards from the busy hub of The Plain where St Clements, Cowley Road and Iffley Road meet and merge. As you start walking, the first place you reach is The Duke, name emblazoned in 70’s-inspired lettering. A compact but busy pub with a good atmosphere, it’s an ideal place to start (or finish) a night out. The blackboards outside promise ‘Buckets of beer’, amongst other tempting drinks offers, and once inside it certainly lives up to expectations. Stroll a short distance and you come across the Port Mahon with its Sunday roasts, impressive beer garden (complete with pool table) and regular live music upstairs.

Both outside and in it has the feel of a country pub, with its rough cut stone frontage and bare wooden beams, but it still has a great buzz about it, which we liked. Whether you’re on a pub crawl or meeting someone for a leisurely lunch, it ticks the right boxes. But what if you need a bit of pampering and a beauty treatment is what you’re looking for? The Fit Kit Studio offers bodywraps, manicures, facials and waxing amongst many other treatments that will leave you feeling revitalised. Or if you feel a haircut would complement your now glowing complexion, then head down the road to Anne Veck’s hair salon where you can get you hair done by top stylists. No matter if it’s a funky new style you’re looking for or something that you’ve had done before they will do an excellent job. Specialist shops are the order of the day down St Clements and Lenie’s Revival Boutique Clothes Agency is a perfect example of this. It has a wide variety of unique and exciting vintage fashions on display inside and if you need any assistance choosing the right style, the friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable staff are more than willing to help

you create the perfect look. For those looking for the perfect hi-fi, sharpest high-definition TV or perhaps searching for that elusive accessory for their home cinema system, Sevenoaks Sound & Vision might just be able to help. Marantz, Bowers & Wilkins, Boston Acoustics and many other makes are available instore. In fact we at DV8 were tempted by many of the speakers and dvd players, so we may well be making a return visit. After all that walking, shopping and pampering you’ll probably be quite hungry, and again St Clements has plenty to tempt your taste buds with many delicious types of cuisine. W ithin a short stretch you are spoilt for choice with some top cafes and delis. Le Petit Pain and Cous Cous Café, to name just a couple, offer tasty but very different culinary choices. Whether you prefer tasty baguettes and croques in the French style, or Moroccan couscous, houmous and falafel, they ensure that eating is enjoyable and never boring. Dinner is catered for with an array of contrasting but

impressive restaurants. Two particularly unique and top quality examples are The Pink Giraffe and Oxford iconic venue, The Fishers. The Pink Giraffe is difficult to miss with its quirky exterior, a unique shade of light pink and with a giraffe stencilled on the glass. There’s no doubt that they take their food seriously though, and dishes such as the spicy, mixed seafood Yum Talay only serve to increase its reputation. The Fishers is also highly rated and is seen as one of the best fish restaurants in the country. As you sit down to one of the wide range of seafood dishes (the Scottish Salmon Fishcakes work for us) the whole experience has been made as enjoyable as possible. The wide variety and high quality of eateries along St Clements may well surprise you and having a nice stroll with the luxury of being satisfied and full is never a bad thing in our book. During our brief walk along St Clements we’ve only scratched the surface of what this most varied of streets has to offer. The only way to know which are the best places to visit, is to head down there yourself. So the next time someone’s suggesting Jericho or Cowley Road as a place to go, add St Clements to the list and you might just find some new favourite places.

It’s official: we’ve gone Back To The Future.

At the end of last month, Nike started tweeting some pretty strange things about the cult 80s film and a potential collaboration. Then it was revealed – the trainer giant would be bringing films to life. Nike have made 1500 pairs of the glow in the dark Air Mag shoes, which featured in the classic film when Marty time travelled forward to 2015. They’re being auctioned on eBay in the States to raise money for the Michael J Fox Foundation, which funds research into Parkinson’s Disease (the star was diagnosed in 1991).

Though there are things from that film I’d rather have seen brought to life (The rehydrated pizza oven anyone? The hover board?) I think this is a flipping brilliant idea. Not only is it a creative and personal way to support a charity, it has also transformed thousands of people in their 20s and 30s back to childhood and their futuristic dreams. If you fancy a piece of movie memorabilia history, the link you need is http://nikemag.ebay.com/shoes Most are (brace yourself) going for around two and a half thousand dollars at the moment, though pairs have already fetched between $3500 and $10,000. That all pales into insignificance when you get to rapper Tinie Tempah though… he got slightly carried away during a live auction in LA and shelled out $37,500 for a single pair – that’s almost 25 grand. And they say girls get silly when they buy shoes! You can catch Sophie weekday mornings from 7am hosting The Morning Glory on Glide FM 107.9 t

Mexican Food is one of our favourites of all the international cuisines, and in Oxford we are lucky to have a few places that offer great food from Mexico, one of these is high street favourite Las Iguanas

CULINARY DELIGHTS

Park End Street, Oxford, 01865 263150

Mexican Poppadoms are a really good dish to choose as a light, yet addictive starter (We opted to share these as we sipped back our first round of delicious cocktails). They are huge cooked tortilla chips dusted in a delicious blend of herbs and spices accompanied with a delicious dip. We went for the classic, guacamole. As being self-proclaimed experts in eating Mexican food, we had left plenty of space for the main event, firstly, the classic burrito. Las Iguanas offers their burritos in a baked tortilla parcel topped with salsa, sour cream and guacamole (thats enough of the topping) the middle is crammed full of Mexican deliciousness of Rice, Coleslaw, and Cheese and

lets not forget the filling of our choice, spiced chicken, peppers and onions. Writing about this is making us want to go back and order some more!

We also chose the other classic Mexican dish of Fajitas. We love the Fajitas at Las Iguanas as they come with a certain amount of self construction, as you assemble the fajitas yourself, filling the soft wheat tortillas with the special mix of coriander, lime, paprika, cumin, onions & peppers. Dished up sizzling, with chunky guacamole, soured cream, jalapeùos, homemade salsa and with the addition of strips of mouth watering rump steak. We might not be able to afford a trip to Mexico, but a trip to Park End Street will make a great substitute in the mean time. Want a tip? Check special offer websites and apps, as Las Iguanas often appears on here, and can offer great savings such as 2 for 1’s.

4550 MILES FROM DELHI Park End Street, Oxford,

This month at DV8, we also opted to choose the delights of another of our favourite international cuisines... Indian. One of the things we really like about 4550 miles from Delhi, they offer food all day, from lunch to dinner menus, and the thing we liked is that they offer food really late (the day we went we were really late, as we had been caught up with some pre dinner drinks). Even as we were clearly the latest people to arrive and eat, the staff were equally friendly, attentive and gave us plenty time to peruse the menu and ask questions.

Like all good Indian restaurant meals we started with some popadoms and dips, which started the conversation of which is our favourites, it came down to a choice between mango chutney or lime pickle, either way, we love popadoms! The restaurant offers relaxed friendly atmosphere, and during

busier times an atmsophere with hustle and bustle that pays homepage to the home city of Delhi. We really like the idea of having an open plan kitchen, and seeing the chefs in action (maybe we should have picked up some cooking tips while we where there!) After looking at the very extensive menu, we decided to opt for a couple of the more traditional dishes (We here at DV8 are simple at heart). So we chose a Lamb Rogan Josh and a Chicken Jalfrezi, accompanied by Pilau Rice and of course some delicious Naan breads (one garlic and one Peshwari), The portion sizes were just the right size (too often we over induldge at Indian restaurants or takeaways and literally need to be rolled home). We think that 4550 Miles from Delhi is one of the best Indian cuisine restaurants in Oxford, and you should definitely arrange a dinner trip here.

What’s Your Ally Darling embarks on a quest to find the best “ex” of her life, by any means necessary, when she reads a magazine article warning that people who have had 20 or more relationships have missed their chance at true love.

Ally is an original modern heroine. She is smart, attractive, funny and romantic – a young woman trying to figure out who she really is, as well as whom she should be with. While her quest to find her best “ex,” or former boyfriend, is triggered by a magazine article, it also signifies something even more intriguing: Ally is at a point in her life when she doesn’t have the husband, job or life she thought she’d have. She is at a crossroads, which leads her to wonder if she has missed something – or someone – important during the past decade. WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? showcases the formidable

comedic talents of Anna Faris, who portrays Ally. “Anna brings to the role great focus, her ability to be heartbreaking and real as well as that oft-quoted new Lucille Ball quality – that delightful awkwardness combined with a physical beauty and exquisite comic timing,” says director Mark Mylod.

Faris’ Ally Darling, may be adorable and fun, but she is far from perfect. “She’s trying to figure out the missing link in her life and how she can find some direction to it,” says Faris, “whether that’s through love or her artwork, a job or a special pair of shoes. Ally is a little lost, currently unemployed, and struggling for money.” On the mor ning we meet Faris’ Ally, another bad romance has just imploded and she’s fired from her job in marketing. On her way home from her truncated day at work, Ally

Ally becomes convinced she’s reached the limit of sexual partners a woman can have before she’s deemed unmarriageable. With celibacy as a non-starter, Ally embarks on a mission to find a mate, without adding to her number, by seeking the colorful and strange assortment of lovers from her past; she wonders, are they married, available, gay …dead?
