Being Staff Writer at DV8 for the past couple of years has been ace, but when the idea of being the Guest Editor for July came about, I was very excited! It has always been one of my dreams to be an Editor of a glossy mag, so this was my time to get a snapshot of some of the limelight and it has been an absolute blast! I hope you’ve all been enjoying all my facebook posts and tweets and my cheesy ‘story so far’ posts! It’s been a lot of fun getting to know lots more people round Oxford and finding out just how much happens in one month. I’ve really enjoyed putting my mark on the magazine and getting to find out more about what’s involved with creating the full masterpiece! Being a local Oxford girl all my life (well, Wantage!) I have always enjoyed a good night out on the town and I don’t think I realised just how many different promotional nights actually go down, this month has been a good one!

The Jubilee weekend was definitely one to remember, I saw so many cocktail filled teapots, some of the best fancy dress I have seen in a long time and all the bunting you could ever dream of over that weekend! Personal highlights were the Super Hero night at Purple Turtle and the Wah007 Casino night. Two great promotional nights and definitely some sore heads afterwards! We have also chosen our winners for the ‘Face of DV8’ competition which we’re dead excited about. Getting you guys involved with the magazine is very exciting and I bet the winners can’t wait to see their face on the cover, we think they are all going to look gorgeous! I’m also really excited to let you know about an exclusive party happening this month...introducing the Nelly High Heels Tour! On Friday 13th July (it’s going to be lucky, we promise!)...Nelly.com (think a Swedish style ASOS) will be bringing their High Heel Tour to Camera in Oxford. Be one of the first 150 guests to arrive and you will get to choose your favourite pair of shoes from their upcoming collection for FREE! We will also be giving away 5 pairs of VIP tickets in the week leading up to the event, which will guarantee you get your free high heels! Keep a close eye on the DV8 facebook page to find out more ;) Thanks to everyone that I’ve met and worked with over the past month, it’s all been loads of fun and I’ve loved being the Guest Editor! I hope you enjoy the issue, I promise it’s one of the best issues I’ve seen in a long time ;) Lots of Love Sally – July Guest Editor

EXPOSURE July

We popped in for a drink one evening and were waited on by the friendly and attentive staff as they showcased their fine drinks menu to us. We also noticed that there is Happy Hour from 12-7, a perfect place for after-work cocktails!

The place is full of glamorous lighting and glittering chandeliers and is a beautifully set out. The ‘kitchen’ part is on the ground floor The independent owners have a and the ‘bar’ part upstairs with a proven track record of running bars view of the Summertown high street. and restaurants around Oxford, so we are sure the new place will have a fantastic launch.

The new venture promises to be an exciting addition to Oxford’s fine dining Oxford scene with a strong focus on customer service and being creative with food and drink offerings.

We would recommend you pop in to find out what the hype is all about! In the meantime check out their website for full menu and cocktail choices!

OXJAM TAKEOVER

Following a successful first year, the Oxjam Oxford Takeover is back to celebrate the best of the city’s local music and to raise money for an excellent cause. Aiming to raise over £6000 for Oxfam, the Oxjam Oxford Takeover team is planning a multivenue city centre festival for 13th October. Last year’s event saw venues such as the Turl Street kitchen, Cellar and Modern Art Oxford taken over with top local talent like Matt Winkworth, We Aeronauts and The Scholars, and this year the hopes are to make it even bigger and better. The team also have several

fundraising events planned for the summer including a gig on the roof of the Said Business school; their very own ice-cream party and some pub take-overs in Oxford’s surrounding towns. To keep up to date with everything that’s going on, make sure you check out the website www.oxjamoxford.co.uk and follow @oxjamoxford on Twitter. The team are also on the lookout for bands, sponsors and volunteers, and anyone interested in helping out can get in touch via the website.

CUBICLE CREATIONS

Wahoo are opening up their doors to the talented artists of Oxford! The quirky concept is an unique competition to showcase new or established artists’ work in the toilet cubicles of Wahoo. There will be 17 artists chosen to get involved and the winner will receive a £500 cash prize, a £500 commissioned art piece and will have up to 2000 people view their artwork. We are excited to see the artwork and see what the artists decide to create in the small space.

We are sure there are going to be some imaginative and experimental pieces, and with graffiti artists encouraged to enter, there could be something really cool going on! Each artist will be assigned their own toilet cubicle and they will be able to draw, paint, graffiti this in whatever way they wish. This will not only make things more interesting but will hopefully discourage customers from adding their own graffiti to the cubicles. We’re sure it will add a bit of

culture to a drunken night out! We think this is an exciting and fun opportunity for local young artists to really showcase their talents and individuality. Their work will be photographed and displayed on the company’s website, Facebook pages and in local media sources. We will be following the competition closely and look forward to seeing the finished designs!

A Superheroes Run is returning for its third year on Saturday 4 August and is a charity event that we at DV8 encourage you to go along to and support! The 3 mile event, held in honour of Sam Williams, raises money for Teenage Cancer Trust. Participants are encouraged to dress up as their favourite superhero, or even wear an event t-shirt, or perhaps just come along as themselves. Maybe you will win the best-dressedsuperhero prize! It’s great fun for all the family, with entry £3 per adult and £1 per child, and there’s even a raffle! www.asuperheroesrun.posterous.com

Do you like your tea with a twist? If so one of Oxford’s newest establishments, with its very own claim to fame as Oxford’s first bubble tea bar, is for you! Formosan is located at 128A High Street, hidden away down an alleyway where you’d be forgiven for missing it. We stumbled across this gem by accident whilst heading to House Bar so decided to swap our after work mojito for our first taste of Taiwanese tea! Formosan follows the traditional Taiwanese way of making tea (but with a very high tech looking machine

to seal the plastic ‘Starbucks like’ cup). The tea is slurped through a fat straw, which pierces the top. The liquid itself is cool, very sugary and filled with little tapioca pellets. To this (uncultured) DV8 editor it tasted a bit like a blend of milkshake and Lipton's tea. To order, you choose your tea base e.g. jasmine green, black etc., then add topping and flavour like honey or lemon then customize by adding ice or sugar. It definitely made a refreshing change!

P

unt Sessions is an original way of showcasing local live music in a way that you wouldn't normally expect. Are you familiar with Black Cab Sessions? Think this but only wetter. This is live music performed along a beautiful Oxford river, filmed in one take, squeezed onto a single punt. We’ve heard even 9 people were on a double punt last month - that’s a good effort we think! Recent sessions include Matt Simpson, We Aeronaunts and Goodwin Sands. Check out their website for up and coming punt sessions. www.puntsessions.com

MILD FRIENDS @ THE LIBRARY 28/05/2012

T

he key to a successful comedy night is to find a good combination of acts that feed off each other’s momentum, and that’s what we discovered when we went along to Mild Friends Comedy Night at the Library pub on Cowley Road. Though having awardwinning comedienne, Angela Barnes, headlining definitely helps! Any concerns about not laughing were quickly dispelled by the sharp, self-deprecating humour of the compere, Jack Barry, who eased nicely into the proceedings with DV8 OXFORD /// July 2012

some banter with the crowd. The first act, Kishore Nayar hit the ground running with some sharp, observational humour that quickly had laughter rippling through the small, atmospheric Library venue, which turned out to be the perfect size for this most intimate of gigs. Liam Williams’ set got off to a tricky start when his train was late, but once onstage he quickly got in to his stride with some caustic situational humour that, in his own words, trod the line somewhere between ‘Sylvia Plath and FHM’. His final skit about

beer was a highlight and meant that the night moved smoothly into the headline act. Angela Barnes, winner of the 2011 BBC New Comedy Award, no less, was a force of comedic nature on stage. Some of her observations on her dysfunctional family caused waves of laughter to move through the crowd and quickly showed how she has become a rising star in the comedy world. Her snapshots of life told from a world-weary, but sarcastic and knowing perspective were a great end to the evening.

O

n Sunday 10th June our good friend Jo the founder of Fe-line Women (the Oxfordshire women's circle), hosted her very first fashion extravaganza in Oxford! We were really excited about the event as we’d heard loads about all the local businesses getting involved and all the different elements of the day, and of course as DV8 had our very own stand too! We were excited to spread the word about the magazine and meet some of you guys (with a complimentary glass of Prosecco why wouldn’t you want to come and say hello?!).

The day’s tag line was ‘a celebration of fashion’ and it certainly didn’t disappoint! The Pegasus Theatre was a perfect venue to host all the elements of the day, with the stalls in the main area showcasing clothes, jewellery and makeup. We had DV8 favourites Lenie’s Revival, Booty Bea and The Make-up Bag there along with many other local businesses and boutiques showcasing their latest trends and creations. A personal favourite of Guest Editor Sally’s were ‘Eat Your Heart Out’ who create all their own jewellery and hair decor from scratch. People were given the opportunity to have makeovers from local hair stylists and make up artists including Anne Veck, Electric Hair Salon and SAS Nails Boutique. We saw some very happy ladies walk out with new hair, new makeup and a new lease of life! A perfect start to summer we think! In the ‘studio’ there was even more inspiration and excitement with clothes swapping, refashioning, photography and workshops. DV8 OXFORD /// July 2012

We particularly liked the clothes swapping! Getting rid of unwanted purchases in return for something new, what more could you want? SLR Photography were also on hand to take photos of everyone in their new frocks or sporting their new looks. There were also engaging and thought provoking workshops on personal style, fashion craft and fashion blogging, so we boosted our knowledge as well as our wardrobe ;) All in all the day was lots of fun and a great way to showcase some of Oxford’s finest fashion and beauty offerings, all in one place.

We also want to say that Jo had the best soundtrack for the event ever (which is available to subscribe to on Spotify – check it out!) ! We look forward to more Fe-line fashion events in the future, watch this space!

MOSQUITO @ THE LIVING ROOM

here’s nothing quite like heading out for a night of sophisticated fun with an energetic atmosphere and a real buzz. Well, we at DV8 found exactly that when we went along to The Living Room’s new night ‘Mosquito’. On arrival, we were greeted with a free glass of champagne before heading inside the Private Bar to get our first glimpse of Mosquito. Soon, we were enjoying the combination of shots of Crystal Head Vodka in glasses shaped like skulls and a great variety of tunes that slipped seamlessly from dance to dubstep and even to soul. The main priority seemed to be to keep the energy levels high and to make sure people kept enjoying themselves. To get involved you need to be a Mosquito Member or a Living Room Privilege Holder and this will give you access to a night of excess, refinement, with more than a touch of glamour. We were left looking forward more exclusive Mosquito nights at the Living Room. See you there!

One of our favourite Jubilee weekend events was the Superhero night at Purple Turtle organised by our good friend and awesome Oxford promoter Tom Plested.

Every superhero needs a night off and this was the perfect night to celebrate all things superhero and see an amazing array of costumes! Our personal favourite was banana-man and the Avatar girl (amazing contact lenses!). The place was rammed with costumed up partygoers with everyone enjoying the amazing drinks deals (6 jagerbombs for ÂŁ8! yes, that's 6, with change from a tenner!) Plus peeps got in for free if they dressed up! The night went on until 5 in the morning if you were hardcore enough; it certainly looked like everyone was there ready to say cheers to the Queen in style!

FLAIRING AT THE LIVING ROOM

F

or you avid readers of DV8, you will know that we are massive fans of the bartending talent in Oxford. Some of the girls in the office have their own hotlist of bartenders around town (but that’s a feature for another day!). The Living Room gave the opportunity for some of Oxford’s finest mixologists to showcase their abilities in another fun-packed battle of the bartenders evening. The night attracted a lot of new talent on the Oxford scene and really demonstrated why Oxford is a cocktail lover’s paradise!

The compère who led the event was full of energy, cracking jokes and encouraging even the quietest people to make a bid in the name of a great cause. The atmosphere was buzzing and by the time it came to draw for the raffle the crowd was cheering and getting involved with proceedings. Items generously put up for auction included; a signed wing from a Formula 1 Force India race car, signed by racing drivers Paul Di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg that was snapped up for £370; darts shirt signed by Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, which went for £80; four hand painted canvasses featuring the members of the Beatles, which made £180; a signed Oxford United football, which went for £60, as well as many other great items. Indeed, a fullpage business editorial in this very magazine was auctioned and was taken by Abingdon Sports, who generously gave £100 for the cause. Overall, the event raised a very impressive £1,770 and we would like to congratulate Sarah and The Living Room for a great night. DV8 OXFORD /// July 2012

DIAMOND @ LOLA LO

T

he Diamond Jubilee was the party of the year, and a great place to go in Oxford to sparkle was Lola Lo’s Jubilee Diamond Night on the Saturday. So we donned our Union Jack hat and headed over to check it out. Outside may have been cold and wet with the rain lashing down on Oxford’s streets, but this didn’t dampen the spirits of the people partying away in Lola Lo’s.

In fact, once you’d bought a cocktail from their impressive range and toasted the Queen’s 60 years on the throne, all thoughts of the bad weather disappeared instantly. That is if you hadn’t already been distracted by the 600 diamonds decorating the bar areas, backed by glowing skulls and flanked by tempting looking bottles of vodka. It would have been rude not to have a taste and make sure the drinks lived up to expectations, which they did. A range of uplifting tunes from the resident DJ’s helped to raise the excitement levels further and people thronged the dancefloor, making the most of their long Jubilee weekend. The night was over all too soon and people left the club happy, knowing they still had three more days of celebrating to go.

Overall it was another great night in Lola Lo’s and the diamonds just added that extra something special. Woul-Jubilee-ve it!

THE RICKETY PRESS 67 Cranham Street Oxford 01865 424581

The Rickety Press is relatively new on the Oxford food scene, and we are ashamed to say that we have only just ventured to this fantastic Jericho Pub. Some people regret the things they do, we definitely regret not coming here sooner! from the moment we arrived, we just knew we were in for something special! The pub is decorated in a rustic chic style, boasting fantastic olde-worlde fittings enhancing the beautiful interior or the building. The pub was really busy for a midweek evening (which

is really nice to see), but we understood why, when the wonderful looking plates were being carried past us from the kitchen to their appropriate tables, we were left with our mouths watering. As the Rickety Press promised us a traditional pub experience and after much deliberation (it was hard to choose what to order), we decided that we wanted some traditional pub food. First up, The Rickety Burger, topped with delicious cheddar cheese, served with French fries and a homemade ketchup. Oxford has its fair share of burger places, but this has to be in amongst one of the best the city has to offer. It definitely made our top 5 burger list! The other meal we opted for was the steak (always a pub classic), the 28 day aged rib eye steak was cooked perfectly to order and simply melted in the mouth, with a generous side of French fries and mixed leaves, this was pretty much the perfect meal, however, we did find room for dessert. We chose to share the cheese board selection. If you are a cheese lover then this will be right up your street, with a variety of cheeses varying in flavour and strength, we would even recommend this as a sharing plate to enjoy if you are just going out for a few drinks. This is a pub that deserves to be a success and by judging by the draw, it looks like it will be! If you haven't checked out yet, we strongly recommend that you do.

JOE’S BAR & GRILL 262 Banbury Road Summertown 01865 554 484

two of us, we decided to start with Joe's Deli Board to share. Offering a great list of Antipasti foods, we were torn on which ones to choose. In the end we opted for a good balance of meat, cheese and bread. We would like to draw particular attention to the delicious Oxford Blue Cheese, which was simply wonderful. Having hit the meat, cheese and bread food groups in the starter we wanted to opt for something different for the main courses. First up was the Joe’s Fish ‘n’ Chips, a delicious piece of haddock encased in a crunchy ‘Old Hooky’ batter, served with all the sides of home made chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce. If you are a fan of fish and chips, this is one for you to check out.

Joe's Bar and Grill has been a firm favourite of ours, situated in the heart of Summertown, this bar and grill has been a firm favourite of DV8's for some time, particularly during the summer months, when their is nothing more relaxing than sitting out the front, relaxing with a drink and watching the hustle and bustle of Summertown. As regulars to Joe's Bar and Grill, we wanted to try something different to our usual favourites. As there was DV8 OXFORD /// July 2012

The second dish was the grilled goat’s cheese and crispy bacon salad, which comprised of a fantastic selection of mixed leaves, red onion and tomatoes, drizzled with some of Joe’s dressing. Salad isn’t always our first choice when eating out, but sometimes, when it is prepared well, it makes for a pleasant surprise. As we said, Joe’s has continued to be a popular eatery in Summertown, and we recommend that you take a trip there soon to try it for yourself. Check out their website to look out for some of their live music nights they have. www.joesresaurants.com

Alice Day 2012?

Oxford has been the home to many literary masterpieces throughout the years, especially in the realm of fantasy, creating some of the most believable and exotic worlds captivating the imagination of adults and children alike the world over. One of the most famous worlds, is of course, Wonderland, the magical realm visited by Alice, who adventures through the weird and wacky world, meeting the most exotic and exquisite of characters on the way. Iʼm sure we donʼt have to remind you of the story! Each year during July, Oxford hosts a series of events to celebrate the first ever reading of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, and this July we are celebrating the stories 150th birthday!

Alice in Wonderland has not only just been a story confined to the pages of a book, but it has inspired the creativity of so many people to interpret their own version and vision of the story (we loved the Tim

Burton movie), the story has encouraged creative minded people to create their own art and fashion inspired by the book. The image to accompany this article was created by Anne Veck in an Alice in Wonderland inspired photoshoot.

As massive fans of Alice in Wonderland and with so much on, we wanted to bring you a selection of events not to be missed this July:

Mad Hatter's Tea Party at Ashmolean Museum You may not have had chance already to check out the amazing rooftop restaurant at the Ashmolean Museam, so this is your opportunity to make the most of one of Oxfordʼs most fantastic restaurants with a Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Enjoy a “frabjous” rooftop tea party with jam tarts and drink-me potions and eat-me cake. Sounds delicious, we canʼt wait.

DV8 meets Kirsty Beer, you may have seen her out and about around Oxford, you may also recognise her from Miss Oxford fame. You will also soon see her on the cover of DV8. In the meantime, we caught up with Kirsty to talk about what makes a good weekend in Oxford and her love for Thirst! Where would you go to let of steam at the weekend: Thirst! It's very rare that I miss a weekend there. Describe yourself in 3 words: Fun, friendly, down to earth.

What's your favourite place to have a chilled out drink mid week? The Living Room. They have incredible musicians there too. What would be your recommended place for a first date? I always feel awkward trying to eat while talk on a first date, so maybe somewhere you can both feel relaxed and have a laugh. I'm quite a sporty person so I'd probably enjoy something more active.

DV8 OXFORD /// July 2012

Where's your favourite place to dance the night away in Oxford? Probably Thirst again. Or Camera too. I love both those places.
