HOBGOBLIN BLUE RINSE

The Hobgoblin pub is one of our favourite pubs on the Cowley Road, we have had countless fun times there, and we were really sad when we heard rumours that the pub was facing closure last year. Again the pub is closing, for a while at least, as it is having a refurbishment. We did love the character of the pub, but a little modernisation is more than welcome. Closing for a few weeks at the end of April, we can’t wait to see the transformation revelation in April. We will see you at the grand re-opening!

Introducing a cool new club night to Oxford! Blue Rinse at the Turl Street Kitchen celebrates the good, the bad and the old; the mad, the rowdy and the senile - playing your fave Electro, Rock N Roll and Motown hits (and everything inbetween). Blue Rinse will be taking over the bottom floor, clearing the tables to serve cocktails in teapots and the famous TSK cake. Expect bunting, doilies, and more boiled sweets than you can shake your zimmer frame at! This first event is completely free entry & there’ll be some exciting drink offers too! hen hitting the town on a Friday or Saturday night (actually thinking about it, any night), one of our favourite places we always like to end up is Thirst. With a fantastic mix of tunes, an outside bar and shisha garden which is awesome all year round and not to mention some of the best drinks and bartenders Oxford has to offer. Speaking of bartenders, we went along to the recent Flair Enough competition, a regular tradition at Thirst, where some of Oxford’s finest bar tenders battle it out to be crowned number 1!

We were amazed by the talents on display. Each competitor had 5 minutes to wow the full and vocal crowd (and that is a long time to fill with increasingly challenging moves). When it came to moves that got the biggest cheer.. perhaps it was Thirst’s Jimmy who played a harmonica interlude! The Living Room’s Harry also brought some cool fluorescent shakers along which was a nice touch! We love flairing competitions, these events are great fun for the contestants and audience alike. In Oxford we are spoilt for choice for talents of bartenders and mixologists alike!

We hope this was the first event of many in 2012, as we are very much looking forward to the next one… who knows, we might practice our skills and enter ourselves!

Paradise, with its tropical sun-drenched beaches, is a long, long way from Oxford, but Lola Lo has given people here a chance to experience the Tiki bar nightlife right on their doorstep, ever since it opened nearly a year ago. Recently they unveiled their new nonstudent night, Beware the Kraken, which offers something different on Thursday nights. We were curious about the glamorous world of club promotion and fortunately the event’s promoter, Poppie Jones, kindly agreed to take a moment out of her busy schedule to sit down and chat with us.

A5 Inside - March 2012:Layout 1

28/3/12

What do you actually do and is it fun? I am the promoter for the Beware the Kraken night at Lola Lo, which is a themed night sponsored by Kraken Rum. It aims to give non-students a night of the week they can call their own, and of course provides them with the opportunity to try the Kraken rum (I recommend a Kraken bomb). It’s my job to get people enthusiastic about the event and encourage them to come along. It’s a great night out! Walk us through a typical day (or night)…. Preparation is everything when making a good club night. I get to the club early to make sure it is all set up and ready for when the first people arrive. It’s important to make sure the Kraken branding is all in place and that the whole place has the right feel. I then make sure that the DJs, Curtis and Rob, are all set and then we open the doors and welcome people in. How did you get into promoting? It started at uni here in Oxford as the rep for my course, which was great experience and it always helped to get a bit of extra cash. I also did bits and pieces of promotion for Lola Lo during the last year and when the opportunity came along to work on the Beware of the Kraken night, it seemed like too good an opportunity to miss. I feel that my familiarity with the nightlife in Oxford will help in my aim to make sure that people have a great night. What’s the biggest challenge of being a promoter? Well, it’s a new night, so the biggest challenge for me is getting the word out there to people. My assistant and I spend a lot of our time going round local shops getting to know the owners, giving them fliers and answering any questions they may have. We’ve already had a positive response, and we will be heading out onto the streets to hand out fliers to people on Thursdays before the night gets started. People need to know what’s happening here and the challenge for me is to make the Beware the Kraken stick in their minds and make it the Thursday night out of choice. How does Oxford’s nightlife compare with other cities? It’s incredibly student focussed most of the time, which is fantastic as there’s a lot of enthusiasm for Lola Lo and the type of club that it is. It does make my job more interesting for the Kraken night as it’s aiming primarily at non-students. The buzz around the city on a night out is fantastic and I really enjoy working here and going out in the city when I get the chance. If I head out to other cities, I‘d say that Liverpool is my favourite. Recently, I met up with some of my mates I went travelling with and we had a great night up there. There are a fantastic number of bars and clubs, which gave us a really varied time. It’s also a really friendly city, which gives it a nice feel when you’re walking round. What’s your favourite aspect of the night club industry? Dealing with the people who are coming into the club. They’re looking to have a good night and It’s rewarding to see them

00:11

Page 11

enjoying the event, kicking back or having a dance, and hopefully coming back again and again. What do y ou get up to when not promoting? There’s nothing quite like going to the pub and having a quiet drink with my friends. I have been known to be a bit of a party animal as well though. We at DV8 love fashion and thought it would be rude not to ask you about it. What is your favourite item of clothing / fashion faux pas? I guess they would be one in the same thing…….My onesie. I know they divide opinion, but I love mine. Where can we find you on a night off? I like a night out in Cowley, starting off in the pubs, possibly ending up at a club, but sometimes a bit of live music finishes the night off nicely. We hear that Lola Lo is turning 1 soon. What can we expect? It’s going to a spectacle that people won’t want to miss on the Saturday before Easter. There will be Cirque Du Soleil-type craziness, with make-up, alternative music and even animals. It should be a great evening. Also, Beware the Kraken will be having its own Easter special on the Thursday before Easter, which should have a great buzz. All the colleges will be off and we’ll be doing an ‘Easter Egg-stravaganza’, so people should head down and check it out. It’s our round. What are you drinking? Kraken Pepsi with grenadine, please. Otherwise it’d probably be a Zombie cocktail, which is really strong but so, so nice. When going out, what is y our music of choice? It depends on my mood really. I like a bit of dub-step, Shy-FX has done some great tunes. Sometimes though, it’s great just to chill out on a night out with some good cheesy music. What’s it like being a female promoter in the industry? It’s not made much difference to me, I don’t think. I just concentrate on doing my job well (my multitasking skills help). But I also like meeting the people and having a chat with them. Sometimes it’s good to be nice to people and that’s how I approach the job. Have you got any advice for people considering going into event promotion? Have fun. It’s a great career and I think you’ll do a better job if you make the most of it. It can also be quite stressful, so do your best to avoid things getting you down. Don’t take anything to heart and keep chipping away. Any final thoughts? Come down to Lola Lo and check out the Beware the Kraken night every Thursday. Also, keep your eyes peeled for future promo stunts for the event. There will be more coming soon!

A5 Inside - March 2012:Layout 1

28/3/12

First things first, what is Kraken? Well, it’s a black spiced rum named after a mythical sea monster, and after having several £2 ‘Kraken Bombs’ we can vouch for it being very pleasant to drink (you may have seen an actual Kraken cameo in the second Pirates of the Caribbean film). As for the night itself, Lola Lo was dressed up with plenty of Kraken themed decorations and a giant neon sign glowed brightly all night, always reminding you of the drink of choice. The music was an eclectic blend of drum & bass, dubstep and more mainstream anthems remixed by the resident DJs, which created a refreshing buzz. It certainly kept us on the dancefloor throughout the evening and into the early hours. So if you’re looking for an escape on Thursday nights to relax after a hard day, with more than a little dancing and of course drinking some black spiced rum, then Beware the Kraken may just be the event for you. (We would also point you towards the Kraken’s entertaining website where you can find out more about the legend of the Kraken itself: www.krakenrum.com.) DV8 OXFORD /// APRIL 2012

hursday 14th March marked the official launch party of local new production company ‘Eat my Box Productions’. We were eager to find out more about this cool new theatre company and mingle with some of the creatives that have been involved with getting it all off the ground. As well as immersing ourselves in the atmosphere of the exciting launch night, we got the chance to find out more about their interesting first production and meet some of the cast members! Cafe Tarifa was the perfect location, with live music and delicious sweets and even a chocolate fountain (thanks to local new dessert parlour, Indulge on Cowley Road). We also enjoyed the amazing cocktails, especially the bespoke Eat My Box cocktail created especially for the night! It was a great evening full of anticipation for exciting things to come, and we welcome an original and innovative theatre company to the Oxford scene. We really look forward to see what they have in store for us!

MADE IN CHELSEA @ THE BRIDGE

eing a magazine that specialises in all things social, we were really excited to hear that Hugo, Spencer and Caggie from E4, hit reality TV show, Made in Chelsea, were going to drop by and make a special appearance at one of our favourite night clubs, The Bridge. We couldn't wait to hang out with the self proclaimed, social elite. we were hoping we might even pick up some tips. Word of their appearance had ensured, the already beautiful, people of Oxford were looking their best, and we would like to say, the club played host to some of the most attractive people Oxford has to offer. (note to self‌. must start coming here more often!). The champagne was flowing in the VIP section with Saturday night being played out the only way it should‌ In style! We briefly caught up with the main stars, and they were as beautiful and charming in real life as they are on the television. Whether Made in Chelsea is scripted reality or we not, we love it all the same. You never know, one day there may be a similar show based on the Oxford elite.. Fingers Crossed!

The highlight of the night for us came when everyone was gathered round to watch a 'wet shave' demonstration. To our delight, the 'barber' Sian, performed an operatic routine to the amazement and delight of the crowd. Normally when we thing of the combination of barbers and opera, we think Sweeny Todd... but that certainly wasn't the case here. With spirits high and everyone having a jovial time, it was time for the auction and raffle section of the evening. A host of fantastic prizes were available, including a Ferrari driving experience; and champagne dinner to name a few… Sadly for us, we weren’t lucky in the draw, but the fun we had during the evening made us up for it. A massive well done to the organisation that went into making such a fantastic evening. As for the money raised? We hear it was a whopping £1,800 at the last count! DV8 OXFORD /// APRIL 2012

MISS OXFORD 2012 FINALS

T

his year’s Miss Oxford final was hosted by the Living Room and Front Models and what a perfect night it was! We were wowed and wooed by the beautiful contestants as they walked their walk down the run way and competed for the chance to be crowned the one & only Miss Oxford for 2012! The final 7 impressed us in red in the 1st round and strutted their stuff. We thought we had just walked into a Special K audition, with them all looking very glamorous! We felt like we were surrounded by celebs! The sports round gave the girls a chance to show us some of their moves, as they all indulged in a routine that looked like they stepped right out of a Madonna music video, we wanted to join in! The ‘Evening Wear’ round saw the girls donning their finest frocks and flickering their eyelashes to the best of their ability! The last round gave all the girls a chance to let the audience know why they should be Miss Oxford. Some inspirational words were said, with the girls letting us know how much fun they were having and proclaiming that to be the best Miss Oxford you should be confident, caring and strong willed. The winner of Miss Oxford will automatically win a place in the prestigious Miss England grand final in June where she will get the chance to compete to win the title and go on to represent England at Miss World. How exciting! Big congrats to Second runner up Danielle Anns, 3rd runner up Sarah O’Reilly and winner of Miss Oxford (with her chance to be Miss England) Amelia Watts! J’s has become one of our favourite cocktail bars in Jericho… well, not just Jericho, but the whole of Oxford. We love the fantastic bar staff, the cool tunes that get pumped into the relaxing, chic interior and the awesome drinks, which look almost too good to drink.

We can’t believe how fast time has gone by, as at the end of February the cocktail bar celebrated its 1st Birthday, cementing its place on the Oxford bar scene.

Page 18

We helped celebrate with a few of our favourite cocktails from the menu, which we have got to know very well over the last twelve months. We also chatted to bar manager MAX, who told us how well the bar has grown over its freshman year, securing a good fan base with regulars and new faces alike. He was excited for what the summer will bring at LJ’s. Happy Birthday LJ’s, thanks for such a fantastic year (and the occasional hangover!) and we look forward to celebrating number 2 and seeing what your sophomore year has to offer!

After a fun evening around Oxford armed with tall green St Patricks Day hats and some of the finest drinks the emerald isle has to offer, we decided to end the party in a non-traditional irish venue, and checked out the party at Roppongi.

Earlier in the evening we had our fill of Guinness, so we we looking forward to checking out some drinks with an Irish twist. We loved the green potion shots and the green bombs the talented bar staff had concocted in tribute to the patron saint of Ireland. DJ Ollie East was on the decks spinning a fantastic mix of beats to make sure the St Patricks party carried on well into the early hours. We said St Patricks was one of our favourite drinking days... What’s next on our list? According to our diares the Easter weekend is just around the corner! DV8 OXFORD /// APRIL 2012

MOVIE PREVIEW: AMERICAN REUNION

We loved the American Pie franchise (we even loved the run on films that didn’t include the original cast, including the titles such as Beta House and The Naked Mile). For us it reminded us of a time of being a teenager and all that awkwardness that comes with it.. I would have to say that asking around the office nobody (admitted) to trying to have sex with warm apple pie! We couldn’t be more pleased that a new slice of American Pie is headed our way, as we catch up with all the favourite characters as they traverse the equally difficult world of adulthood... Welcome to the American Reunion

We travel back to East Great Falls for the time honoured edition of the ten year high school reunion. In one long-overdue weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn’t and that time and distance can’t break the bonds of friendship. It was summer 1999 when four small-town Michigan boys began a quest to lose their virginity. In the years that have passed, Jim and Michelle married while Kevin and Vicky said goodbye. Oz and Heather grew apart, but Finch still longs for Stifler’s mom. Now these lifelong friends have come home as adults to reminisce about—and get inspired by—the hormonal teens who launched a comedy legend. American Reunion is set for UK cinema release on 2nd May 2012 and if you can’t wait that long, then check out the trailer on the official American Pie website: www.americanpiereunion.com

BAR OF THE MONTH - ANGELS

Angels on Little Clarendon Street has always been a firm favourite of us here at DV8; the friendly staff, the great cocktails and not to mention some of the best nights out ever! Recently Angels had a beautiful makeover and we really love the contemporary decor, which includes some huge portraits of Hollywood icons (it’s fun to guess who they are, and for a heads up one of them is Elizabeth Taylor).

Jericho ‘hipster’ backdrop offering a sexy, chic, cocktail bar. We are not really sure when is the best time to visit Angels, it is brilliant as a place to wind down after a day at the office, or shopping around town. It is equally good on a Saturday night, with sexy tunes being pumped throughout the bar. (We should mention Angels attracts a sexy crowd... so you might want to look your best!) Whenever you visit, kick-back and enjoy some of the delicious cocktails

DV

on offer from the extensive menu. Angels has the look and feel of a bar that wouldn’t be out of place in the likes of Hollywood and New York.as the best neighbourhood to get a cocktail!

One thing not to forget, Angels is featured on our very own DV8 VIP. Log on to www.dv8oxford.co.uk and download a voucher that lets you get happy hour prices all night every night in April.

COCKTAILS OF THE MONTH - LJ’s

Angels firmly sits nicely against the

KIWI GARDEN

Served in a tall glass over crushed ice and decorated with slices of Kiwi. A drink with Kiwi fruit in it has to be good for you (we’re counting it towards our five a day!) One sip of this fruity concoction and we were hooked! You couldn’t really tell there was an alcohol content but believe us there was, we definitely felt the effect after a couple!! Kiwi Garden is taken from the extensive menu at LJ, be sure to make a trip and try the whole menu!

Remember to get your voucher from DV8 VIP and get happy hour prices all night!

RUM & PEAR

Served in a tall glass, over ice, decorated with slices of apple. LJ features an extensive selection of cocktails, including all the classics, and some fantastic unique concoctions made from the vast experience of the bar staff.

Be sure to check out this delicious creation when you visit. It is a perfect drink to enjoy as an after work treat, or just to get you ready for the summer months ahead! The drink is subtly sweet and reminded us a lot of pear drop sweets from our younger years.... Delicious!

Go colour crazy with Balmain Hair Extensions at Anne Veck!

This mo nth, Ma trix Artistic Director Anne Veck is giving you so me helpful insights into gett ing out of yo ur co mfort zone. So, read on if you want to add a little colour in your life for 2012!

Forget Kate Middleton’s polished mahogany hues – this is the season to go crazy with your hair colour! Neon pink and highlighter yellow chignons, lilac bobs and turquoise striped ponytails have recently adorned the fashion catwalks for Spring/Summer to much praise by fashion editors.

For the last two seasons, we’ve been wearing our hair in virginal hues of pale blonde or rich brown, but now, with this new cacophony of hair colour championing the London and New York fashion shows, it’s a great time to break out of our hair colour rut! There is of course a stark difference between the “fashion” world and the “normal” world, so if you’re slightly apprehensive about rocking a tantalising hue of Tango orange, then here at Anne Veck, why don’t you have a “one night stand” with vibrant colour using our Balmain ClipTape Hair Extensions? Balmain’s Clip TapeHair Extensions allows you to explore the possibilities of having daring panels of temporary colour placed into your hair securely, safely and quickly. Appropriately named ClipTape, this instantaneous hair extension system has dual application methods. You can apply it using the clips on the extensions for a 1 night style gratification. Or, for a longer fling with these amazing colours (2-4 weeks), visit us at the salon where we’ll attach the hair using the ultra fine self-adhesive tape which runs along the top of the hair extensions.

The tape option is amazingly discreet and blends naturally into natural hair within minutes. It’s also ultra safe and kind to use on natural hair and is removed easily by misting solvent onto the tape where it will slip right out of the hair in no time! For the colour brave, you can choose from an imaginative array of violet, hot pink, blood orange and burnt yellow, or for the demure, there’s a great range of natural hues which range from cool blonde to honey brown.

Another massive pro for using our Balmain’s ClipTape Hair Extensions is that they can be reused – a great saving for the trendsetter on a tight budget!

Clements & Church is an independent British tailor creating contemporary ready to wear, made to measure and bespoke gentlemen’s attire. In February Clements & Church opened a brand new store in Little Clarendon Street in Oxford. DV8 caught up with the impeccable groomed, owner Aaron John and Richard Gunton to find out a little bit more about the men behind Clements & Church and see how they are settling into their new home. The 2012 Clements & Church man is... The Clements & Church man likes to dress in a contemporary, visually exciting, individual way. Our customers are looking for quality in the clothes they wear as well as wanting something that is distinctive and unique. Tell us about the Clements & Church clothing range… We only produce a limited number of each garment, for example ten jackets in one design, so once they’re gone they’re gone! We won’t produce anymore. All of our ties are handmade and again only a certain number of each one is available. The majority of our range is made in England.

Describe your typical workday... No two days are the same, but we are always really busy! From designing new items, to taking trips to fashion houses and shows, through to the day-today tasks such as merchandising the shop, we are constantly getting new pieces in so we need to reflect this in the layout in store. The most extreme thing you have done for the love of fashion... Not had a social life! Developing Clements & Church is a full time job (and not just 35 hours a week!) But it is definitely worth all the hard work.

“OVER THE LAST YEAR WE HAVE SOLD OVER 2,000 PAISLEY TIES”

The design process… The Managing Direct in each store works with Aaron to produce their own designs, which means the stock in each store is slightly different whilst still keeping true to the distinctive Clements & Church brand. For example, the Oxford store is the newest and signifies where the brand is now so the stock is more forward thinking. For Clements & Church Spring is all about... We follow seasonal trends, but we don’t work by set seasons. We are constantly bringing in new products and creating new designs which means our clothes are a response to what people are wanting now and can react a lot quicker to what is going on in the fashion world. We maintain a strong colour palate throughout the year which is a signature of our brand. Four style essentials... 1. A pair of hand made shoes 2. A suit for best 3. A pair of handmade cufflinks 4. A pocket watch!

Your inspiration is... We go to a lot of big textile fairs such as Milano Unica and Premier Vision and visit mills to look at the various cloths, trimmings, leathers etc. We also look at what people are doing in the fashion world and take inspiration from historic cuts and fabrics. Tailoring trends tend to go full circle so we look at ways we can tweak or add our own twists to classics. Your rule for getting dressed is... Prepare the night before “failing to prepare is preparing to fail” and go against the norm, don’t always be matchy matchy be an individual. DV8 are particularly loving Paisley and Florals this Spring/Summer, and looking around that definitely seems to be a popular look with you. So, which is your favourite, paisley or florals? Paisley! Over the last year I think we must have sold in excess of 2,000 paisley ties. Any celebrities you would like to see wearing your clothes… Some celebrities already wear our clothes! But which ones would be telling…
