hello

Welcome to the last issue of 2012 for DV8 Oxford... Where did that year go? I remember like it was only yesterday putting together the first issue of 2012, it s fair to say that this year has flown by and has been full of events that continue to ensure that Oxford is a hotspot of culture, fun and one of the best cities in the UK to live.

In this issue you will read about the event of the year, the fantastic Oxford Fashion Week. We loved the parties, the shows and of course the fashion, both on and off the catwalk. Be sure to check out some of the stunning images caught on camera, we’re already counting down to OFW 2013! Other events on the social calendar included celebrating the 6th birthday of one of our favourite pubs, the Oxford Retreat, here is to another 6 successful years!

December brings with it our favourite time of year, yes we are talking about Christmas, including the run up to it, the day itself and then of course, the biggest party night of the year, New Years Eve. It looks like Oxford is going to have some fantastic parties planned to welcome in 2013. We are especially loving the special Burlesque night in the Living Room! If you are looking to make an entrance at your Christmas party this year, we really recommend that you book an appointment with Anne Veck Hair Salons for them to create a fantastic updo, Editor Ali visited them for Oxford Fashion Week, and people are still talking about how awesome she looked!

As usual we will be out and about taking photos of people enjoying the festive season, so look out for us and give us your best smile! We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. DV8 Team xoxo

WHAT WE LOVE AND HATE

DV8 HOTLIST

THUMBS UP... One Direction We remember when we went to see One D play one of their first gigs ever at the Oxford Regal, if only we knew then what a worldwide success they would turn into?! The true reality TV show champions, the boys did good!

Big Scarfs and Winter Clothes You gotta love a lovely snugly coat and a lush cosy scarf wrapped around yourself on a cold winters day. Whilst everyone’s complaining about scraping the ice off their car we’re secretly loving the cosy nights in and baggy jumpers that we are getting away with sporting this season. Nail Varnish Trends Magnetic nail varnish, who’d have thought? Nail varnish that looks leopard print and cracks before your eyes, never! We applaud the nail varnish creators out there that are doing these crazy tricks with our nails.... The perfect way to give an old look a fresh spin! iPad Mini This has to be on the Christmas list of every tech junkie around the world. We love them, it’s all the fun of iPad in a handbag sized proportion.. love it!

THUMBS DOWN... Gary Bore-low/XFactor We used to be big fans of Gazza, but for some reason he’s gone all jobs worth on us. Alright, Rylan can’t sing to save his life, but he is absolutely hilarious and makes us want to get shoulder pads trending again! Twi-hards Is it just us or has this phenomenon passed us by?! We get that Rob and Taylor are mega hot and the whole battle for your love thing is a winning formula, but how many films have there been now? It’s time to end on a high people!

Delayed Hangovers Don’t you just hate it when you wake up and you’re feeling surprisingly smug and spritely, then come evening time you feel like a bus has driven straight into your brain, twice?! This is not cool, just give us what we’re getting straight away so we know what we’re dealing with.

LET S GET MULLERED

DV8 loves the outbreak of PopUps that have quite literally popped up all over the UK over the past few years. This rise of temporary restaurants, cafes, shops, bars and galleries has been a suprise yet welcome addition to our unstable economy and brightened up many sad and empty shop spaces! We were really excited to hear that one of our favourite Oxford eateries, the Big Bang, had opened its own pop-up mulled wine bar, aptly named ‘Mullered’ right next door to The Big Bang restaurant in the Oxford Castle Quarter. The bar is open from the 7th to the 23rd of December and is the perfect watering hole for a festive postshopping restorative drink. The atmosphere is guarenteed to be everything Christmas should be, with wintery lights, friendly faces and hot alcohol, what more could you wish for on a cold December evening? Don’t miss out on this treat, it’s going to put even the scroogiest of scrooges in the festive spirit! The Big Bang itself will be offering up an array of musical entertainment throughout the Christmas period and into the New Year to keep diners entertained, there are also plans for a deli, a pop-up Christmas Market and a nightspot... Plus we’ve heard rumours that there might even be a polar bear roaming around the castle yard surrounding the Big Bang, so keep your wits about you, especially if you’re mullered!!! Why not pop in for a mulled wine or a sausage and find out more.

Top 5 Christmassy Places in Oxford

There’s a whole host of Christmassy things to do in Oxford over the festive season, but where are the best destinations to really properly get you in the Christmas spirit? We have chosen our 5 very favourite places to get you in the mood for some festive fun! 1)The Covered Market: The perfect place to go to remind you of that olde Christmas charm that Oxfordians do so well! With fresh Christmas trees and flowers, unique gifts, amazing food and a mix of delicious aromas to get your senses going, a visit will really get you into the spirit of the season, you can’t go wrong! Why not stop and have a hot chocolate and just take in the atmosphere, it will remind you of old fashioned Christmas stories where everything was home grown and wholesome. A great escape from the more mainstream, commercial shops, get some real authenticity here!

2)The Oxford Ice Rink: Although ice skating may bring back bad memories of parties when you were young, clutching to the sides of the rink in the sheer hope someone wouldn’t crash into you...We promise if you revisit this activity now you will have a whole different view! There’s something so magical and Christmassy about going ice skating and just gliding around and imagining you’re in a Christmas film reaching the real ‘life is awesome’ moment as you realise you’ve not fallen over for at least ten minutes. It’ll be really ace, we promise.

3) The 03 Gallery Christmas market at the Castle: So, you’ve been elbowed in the face for the tenth time by some teenager that’s somehow one whole foot taller than you, you’ve looked around the same 5 reliable shops you always got your parents presents from at least 3 times and actually you want to buy something a little bit different this year. The perfect destination and the answer to all your shopping problems is the late night shopping venue – The 03 Gallery. Hosting an array of individual stalls selling really unique and quirky gifts, this is an opportunity to get something cool and different for your loved ones. This Christmas market is being held on 3 dates (Fri 16th Nov, Thurs 6th Dec and Fri 14th Dec from 6-8pm) and the first 20 guests will receive a complimentary drink on arrival! What more could you ask for?! 4) The Vaults & Garden Cafe: Have you found this little gem of a cafe? Bound to get you in the Christmassy mood and remind you just how gorgeous Oxford really is. Right in the heart of the city centre, at the University of Oxford, Church of St Mary the Virgin on Radcliffe Square. Offering lovely seasonal, organic and fair trade food all locally sourced, it really is a lovely place to visit and take a break from some Christmas shopping. They even offer a 20% discount to students before midday and after 2pm.

5) The Turf Tavern: One of the smallest pubs you may ever have seen, the perfect spot for a cosy winter pint and a catch up with old friends. Or maybe even a cheeky Christmas holiday date?! The 13th Century Ale house has seen a lot and has so much character you can't help but feel warm and wholesome by just being part of it. It's pretty tricky to find, down a little gap in the wall on Holywell Street amongst the colleges, but once you discover it it'll be your prime destination for out of town friends to show off the real 'Oxford' way.

GET DRESSED UP WITH

We know that the people of Oxford enjoy nothing more than dressing up in fancy dress for a night out, whether it is for Halloween or Christmas or a special occasion like a birthday or a hen do, we’ve seen it all from sexy witches to smurfs! But have you ever been out in town and decided you’d like to change your look? Perhaps you’ve been inspired by that santa lookalike next to you? Well look no further than Lola’s new dressing up room!!

Our favourite tiki bar and club has announced an exciting new addition in the form of a brand new dressing-up booth! The booth will be ready to go from December (we wonder how many office parties will be going crazy there after some delicious tiki cocktails!).

The booth provides ample room to get changed (in private!) with a huge treasure chest full of dressing up goodies, think costumes, hats, glasses and wigs in all shapes and sizes to accessorise your party look plus some seasonal favourites. Why not go along and try them out for yourself? Lola’s dressing up box will be constantly updated so you’ll never get bored. The DV8 team definitely can’t wait to get in it, think of the endless photo opportunities!

BUSINESS

MEET TOBY FROM ....

Tell us how Shuffle Nights was born and the premise behind it? Shuffle came about because I wanted to mix up Oxford’s club nights… I’d been working in the industry for about 6 years by this stage, but it had become very stagnant and needed a good kick – and that’s where Shuffle came in!

How did the first event go? Pretty well(!) I think the first night was at Lava (or Parkend, if you’re an Oxford student), and it was capacity by 11pm, so I was happy!

What do you think makes a good night out? The toughest thing about promotion is that the most important factor is the people. You can have the best music and most incredible drinks deals, but if you don’t have the right people (and enough of them) then you won’t have a great night. Obviously you need to provide the other things to get those people, so it’s a bit of a juggling act. What has been your favourite event? There’s been a few. Obviously the nights where big acts/ celebrity PA’s have come down, they’re always fun – but you can’t beat a huge night that hits you out of the blue.

Have there been any disasters? Back in the early days there were a lot of disasters! When I was still a student and trying to run events while completing my degree I messed up all the time, and lost a lot of money!

Where do you get your inspirations for different nights? Do you have to do a lot of research? I watch a lot of reality TV and listen to a lot of music, if that counts? Otherwise it’s just about talking to the reps and finding out what’s popular at the time, and making sure you keep mixing things up. Aside from Oxford, where are your favourite towns to go out? When I was growing up (pre-uni) I did always like a night out in Chichester…! Only joking – kinda – there’s one nightclub and very few bars, and they’re all terrible. But as I say, it’s more about the people you’re with than anything else, so I still have some amazing memories from it.

What does it involve to be a club promoter? You need to be incredibly stupid, especially if you’ll be running student nights. You have to accept that you’re only really going to be employed for half

of the year, and you need to forget about ever sleeping, or eating healthily… I could go on. Walk us through your typical day. 9.00am – Wake up, shower, food, casual start to work 11.00am – Office 8.00pm – Gym session 8.05pm – Home for more food 9.30pm – Nightclub Who knows what happens after that..!

Aside from your work as a promoter, what else do you do to relax? I also own a printing company (Pulse Print!) and have another project on the go which should be ready at some point next year.. But, to relax, Fifa. What events do you have coming up for Christmas 2012 and beyond? That’s when the students go home, so a lot of lying down, and sleep. If we want more information about the nights you have planned, where should we go? www.shufflenights.com / add “shuffle photos” on facebook.

12/12/12

Many have felt a true sense of the world when confronted with the raw and natural beauty of the ocean, but few have experienced it the way Steve Callahan has. In 1982 he was cast adrift in the Atlantic Ocean in a small dingy for a shocking 76 days. He turned his experiences into a book, Adrift, which became a New York Times best seller. Fast forward nearly 20 years and author Yann Martel mentions Callahan in his best-selling fantasy adventure novel Life of Pi, which explores issues of spirituality as it follows the survival of a shipwrecked Indian boy, stranded in the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal Tiger for 227 days. Naturally, with Ang Lee set to bring Life of Pi to the big screen, it was a perfect fit for the director to bring Callahan to set and take him on as official Survival and Marine Consultant. “Ang Lee tracked me down and we really hit it off,” says the survivor, writer, sailor and philosopher from his home in Maine, New England. “I was hired as the survival consultant, but ended up doing things with a lot of different departments. As the script consultant said, ‘You've got your fingerprints all over this film.’” He’s got plenty of his stories in it too, Lee riveted enough by the details – the way he’d prepare a meal, how a giant blue whale and its baby emerged by his raft – to recreate them for Pi. Striving for authenticity, the director lapped up Steve’s anecdotes and relied heavily on his expertise. “I mapped out what the ocean and sky might look like and matched it with the storyline,” he says. “I stayed throughout principal shooting, spent time with Suraj 16 | DV8OXFORD.CO.UK

(Sharma, who plays Pi Patel), discussed the psychological issues and got involved with props. Plus I was endlessly experimenting with the wave tank - it was a continual learning process, but I think in the end we got some stuff that looked pretty realistic.” Of course, for Steve it inevitably brought back many disturbing memories of his journey two decades ago. As a young man, the ocean was already in his blood; he was sailing 25-footers single handedly before he got out of high school, and he taught himself celestial navigation – the art of using angular measurements between the sun, the moon, a planet or a star and the horizon to guide you. He was soon focused on spending as much time as possible out at sea. “I remember it feeling womb-like, and looking out at the sea passing by and it just felt like home,” he says. “I think it's a very Zen-like experience - I feel very humbled there in a way that really moves me. The ocean has become kind of my universal metaphor for everything. We have this perception in human society that everything is solid and fixed and we try to make things predictable but everything is really fluid.” If Callahan sounds like a philosopher, it’s because he is: at university he studied Philosophy and the Arts, and absolutely sees the connection between his studies and his passion. “To me a boat is a pretty amazing human creation because it's part vehicle, part home and part art,” he says. “I was always interested in philosophy and ideas, the human side imposed on the natural world, but I just didn't realize how important the human side was until I was drifting around

in a life raft. As much as I love the natural world, I'm also attached to the human side of things, which is trying to figure it out. Which ties in to Life of Pi and what Ang was trying to do with the movie... from his point of view, the major theme of the movie is the importance of story in our lives.” The big story in Callahan’s life came in 1982. His marriage of six years had fallen apart and he decided to fulfill a life-long dream: to cross the ocean in a small, humble boat. “I wanted to show that you could live a minimalist material lifestyle and yet reach every place,” he says. “So I designed this little boat, built it and took off from the States. The big game was to get to England, which I did fine. But I was broke and had nothing really to come back to so I figured I'd go to the Caribbean and get a job in a boat yard.” That’s when disaster struck. About a week into his journey it started blowing hard, and he hunkered down. “Then something BOOM! hit the boat and a whole bunch of water came rushing in,” he says. “I just knew immediately that she was doomed and I'd better get my ass out of here or I'm going down with it. I got into the life raft and it got broken away from the boat, basically in the middle of the Atlantic. I spent the next two and a half months learning to live like an aquatic caveman.” His raft had a canopy that offered a little protection from the sun, and he had a ‘ditch kit’ – basic survival equipment, like a sleeping bag, a piece of foam, and some solar stills, a device produced during the Second World War for pilots to distill freshwater from saltwater. However, mental and

DV8 Oxford Dec_11.qxp:Layout 1

12/12/12

physical survival requires more than the basics; he had to go through what psychologists commonly refer to as ‘the stages of survival’. “They divide the survival experience up in a wide variety of ways,” he says. “First there’s Pre-Impact – which is how well adapted are you to what you're doing, how well prepared are you for something going wrong, how much in denial are you? Then there's the Impact stage, when the action actually happens and it's a matter of escaping that and getting out of that immediate threat. Then there's this Recoil stage where everything is new and you have no idea what to do. Finally there's the Adaptation stage, which is when you've figured out your systems - you make tools and you learn how to live off the environment.” For ocean survivors they have to wait a little while for an ocean ecology to start to develop - barnacles and weeds growing on the raft. Soon these attract little fish, which themselves attract bigger fish. “So I had an island ecology,” he laughs. “I had ‘Rubber Ducky’, as I named it, my little island. So I lived in and was the Mayor of Ducky-Ville.” As mayor and sole inhabitant, he got first choice of the food, which mainly consisted of Dorado, a form of mahi-mahi commonly found in tropical waters. “They're fairly big fish, so I would eat organ meats right away because they would go bad,” he says. “But the flesh I could actually strip up in one-inch square cross-sections, and I would string those up to dry in the sun. So in essence it's kind of like cooking it.” He was also able to produce about a pint a

LIFE OF PI

17:57

Page 17

day of fresh water using the solar stills – “ the average person could arguably live about a month without food, but you can only live about 10 days without water, so without them I wouldn’t be alive today,” he says. Whether fishing with a spear, making water, or keeping his mind occupied, he knew survival had to be a pro-active pursuit. “This idea that you can lay around and someone's going to come and pick you up is not a good approach,” he says. “For the Adaptation stage, it's important to normalize life as much as possible. Humor's a big part of that, and it's work work work - getting up in the morning, navigating, exercise, keeping a log, fishing, doing repairs… just being proactive. I had my little stock of fish, little sip of water, I’d watch the sun go down through the canopy and was like ‘Ah, this is the way life should be!’ You go through the same emotions and the same ups and downs as in normal life; it's just all on steroids.” Finally, he saw the pulse of a lighthouse, knew land was close by, and heard the engines of a local fishing boat, initially attracted to the school of Dorado circling his own private eco-system. Seventy-six days after setting sail, he came aground on the island of Marie-Gallante, just off the coast of Guadeloupe. “When I got ashore I had physically lost about a third of my weight and was covered with all these saltwater sores,” he says. “I was pretty with it, but physically I couldn't stand up because of extreme sea legs, so I just kind of collapsed on the beach.” One thing he’s certain of, his survival story didn’t end then: in many ways, it was just the beginning.

“Most people end it when your feet hit the shore, but it's actually only the start,” he says. “The post-survival is a whole kind of survival experience of its own – it was a whirlwind for a while, and then I had re-integrate with family and friends. I was delivered this experience, which meant a huge amount to me, and it was a spiritual experience. As I rode in the life raft, some of the stuff I saw and witnessed I could never have seen or experienced any other way - they were incredibly powerful and often incredibly beautiful - as well as incredibly horrible. I saw my relationship to the Universe and clarified what I believed, especially in my relationship with people. I realized out there that I really missed people, whether they were a pain in the ass or not, that I really needed them in my life and to become a more active member of society. I was determined to come back and be a better person.” He’s gained enormous strength through his experience, something he’s still calling on today. Steve was recently diagnosed with Leukemia, and he’s using everything he learned out there in the Atlantic to guide himself through yet another test of survival. “When I received the bad news about my health, the nurse commented that most people would be like deer caught in the headlights,” he says. “But for me it was more like, ‘Oh, okay, here's something I've got to deal with.’ Like out on the ocean, I’m looking for ways to adapt.” Steve continues to adapt to everything that’s thrown at him with a strength he found cast adrift in Ducky-Ville. Despite all the ups and downs that came from his experience, he wouldn’t have had it any other way.

6th Birthday Party @

When we were told that it was the Oxford Retreat’s 6th Birthday celebrations, our first reaction was surprise. We couldn’t believe that it has only been open for six years, which shows how it quickly became a staple of the Oxford nightlife. This meant that we couldn’t turn down the opportunity to go along and celebrate with them, and maybe have a few drinks. Well it would be rude not to. It was a cold night out on the town, but a large number of people had wrapped up warm and made the trip over to the Retreat and when we arrived it was already buzzing and nearly full even though it was still early. We got a drink and took up our position outside in the fantastic garden which immediately makes you feel like you’re cut off from the world, rather than in the middle of a city. As soon as we sat down, a lady dressed in oriental-style clothes started to perform a seductive dance, cutting elegant shapes into the icy darkness with various different metal objects, their tips set on fire. The 16 | DV8OXFORD.CO.UK

sounds of approval from the large crowd that had gathered were further proof that this birthday celebration had got off to an excellent start. After her captivating performance, the crowd moved inside to warm up, maybe with a cocktail (we chose a ‘Porn Star Martini’, which was a decadent tasty blend of vanilla vodka, passoa, passion fruit and vanilla sugar, served with a shot of champagne). By this time the party was in full swing and we spent the rest of the night having a little dance to the impressive live band, while also trying to catch a glimpse of Andy from Made in Chelsea who was working the room. Overall, it was an excellent evening and we’re already looking forward to many more hazy nights out at the Retreat. We hear there is a Studio 54 party planned for New Years Eve, we can’t wait!

was on! The program kicked off with the free Ethical Fashion Fair in Oxford’s majestic Town Hall, a one-stop destination for all things green, fair and natural. Featuring a variety of pop-up shops, vintage fashion, up cycling workshops, locally produced food & drink, ethical talks, natural hair care and much more. The Fair aimed to educate, empower and inspire all those with a passion for fashion. We wouldn’t blame you if you were wondering… Can ethical fashion really be fashionable? Our verdict, a resounding yes! Our highlight, a fab collection of vintage up cycled vanity cases and suitcases from U Old Bag (www.uoldbag.com) decorated with retro photographs and illustrations using the art of decoupage. The crown vanity case with velvet lining is at the top of our Christmas list! The

day really made us stop and think about our ethical responsibility and purchasing power. Next came The Cosmopolitan Show, showcasing a variety of ready to wear collections, one-off garments and high-end fashion accessories for the sophisticated modern woman (this had our names written all over it!). The clothes were all incredibly wearable and the crowds were very receptive, whilst mentally prepping their shopping lists! The show provided a platform for well-known accessible luxury brands such as the relaxed and easy equestrian inspired style of Hobbs NW3 and the classic and elegant L.K. Bennet beloved by the Middleton’s. It also gave local high-end boutiques including the Powder Room and Marie lingerie the chance to show their latest ranges. emphasis on layers and textures against the beautiful barely there lingerie, made for a fantastic juxtaposition and kept crowds guessing. DV8 loved the romantic, ultra feminine La La LouLa lingerie which is designed by Emelia Penny from Oxford, her collection had an air of old Hollywood glamour and we couldn’t help imagining ourselves wafting around in her sheer pajamas and robe. By Friday we were whipped into a fashion frenzy of excitement, just in time for The Elysium Concept Show, the perfect start to our weekend! The runway show explored the very best in avant-garde and conceptual fashion, presenting a multitude of experimental collections from the new names you need to know in fashion like Nayuko Yamamoto and Yiannis Karitsiotis. These collections pushed the boundaries of ‘normal’

fashion and were a real spectacular to watch even if you won’t be wearing them out in town anytime soon! The production with its amazing chorography, lighting and sound was so professional you could have been mistaken for thinking you were in any of the world’s fashion capitals. The show was a real style extravaganza, our favorite designer had to be Crimson Rose O’Shea, a Central St. Martins Graduate whose collection was unusually made out of great volumes of plastic, this created amazing effects from puff ball dresses to full length, with looks that wouldn’t look out of place on Lady Gaga. As quick as it started, Oxford Fashion Week was drawing to a close for another season, but not before the headline event we had all been waiting for! The Haute Couture Show took place at the world famous Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The runway featured

more than 40 looks, from established luxury fashion brands such as Pierre Garroudi, Rachel Elbaz, Viv Whelan and Dar Sara. The gowns were breath-taking, the stand-out look for us being the Dar Sara finale, a full length regal gown covered in gold embellishment, accessorised with an actual crown and a crystal encrusted red heart clutch. The couture show also introduced a selection of fantastic mensware from Oxford favourite Clements & Church. It really was a night to remember. Is it too soon to start the count down till next year?

How to Survive the Holidays the Healthiest Way You Can

This article is all about the issues we face when we go to parties and the ways that we can attend them, have loads of fun and not completely obliterate all the hard work in the gym or exercise class. As you read on you will be pleasantly surprised that this is not another article asking you to make drastic changes and decisions, it is not exemplifying the importance of a balanced, healthy diet and neither do I banter on about the consequences of unhealthy food. All I’m doing is simply giving you ways to avoid the usual self hate at the start of the new year.

I will begin by setting the scene; supermarkets have been tempting us for months now, we had Halloween with trick or treating (for young and old), followed closely by Guy Fawkes … and now we have the Festive season, with Christmas AND New Years, plus I haven’t even mentioned birthdays or other celebratory parties that are between now and January. It then becomes quite clear why in January, Fat Loss is our numero uno New Years resolution. So lets touch on what a party is first?

Essentially we like to see parties as occasions where we are supposed to relax, chill out, talk about whatever we like, we are usually surrounded by friends and generally people we care about, so there are lots of positive emotions floating around. At the same time there is usually lots and lots of food (mostly bad) plus lots and lots of alcohol around… Some of you might even think, “Well It is just one party, one Halloween, one Christmas, and that one little treat wont make much of a difference,“ but that is just not the case is it? Why? Because, after Halloween, you have the kids treats still lying around for days, maybe weeks after Halloween itself, and the same goes for the office parties etc, when you are walking home with a doggy bag filled with ‘goodies’. If you look at the whole picture then you realise that there are a heck of a lot of oneday occasions all close together and that is where the issue lies! It’s not difficult to see why from October through to December, it is actually one of the hardest times of the year to

stay on track with health and fitness goals.

And so, the coming weeks will no doubt be riddled with parties and all the usual suspects that come with them. Read on if you would like to know some of the best kept holiday secrets for beating that bulge!

Below are strategies that you can take starting from right now, so that you can beat that bulge and not be faced with 20+ pounds worth of unwanted weight at the start of the new year. 1. The first rule is the 80%-20% rule (this applies to the Festive season only). The rest of the year, think 90%-10%. Here I’m simply saying if you are eating healthy and exercising for 80% of the time then by all means, enjoy yourself for the remaining 20%,and do not feel guilty about it.

2. Go in with a plan. Know how much YOU want to drink, how long you will be at the party for, etc... Have some set rules. For example, if you can plan what you are going to wear the day before or if you can organise a ride the day or week before, then where’s the harm in planning how much you are going to eat or drink? 3. Start your meals with the healthy food first. If you see a huge table in front of you, stack your plate with vegetables and then move on to protein, and if you have space left, then reach for the carbohydrates like pastas, breads and noodles; all those starchy carbohydrates. What a lot of people don’t DV8OXFORD.CO.UK | 31

DV8 Oxford Dec_11.qxp:Layout 1

12/12/12

realise is that when you reduce your intake of bread it doesn’t mean reduce your calories. You need to be getting sufficient calories for energy and daily activities, so that means you get more food. Yes! I meant that. You get to eat more chicken (for instance) than you normally would allow yourself, provided of course you reduce the carbohydrates… And then top off your meal with the dessert.

4. Once you feel full, just walk away from the food. Try not to stand there and keep tossing the food in your mouth. Once you are done, move on. Move away and make a conscious effort to start a conversation somewhere else in the room. Why put yourself in that position? The last thing you want is to over eat at a party and then feel bloated and uncomfortable when you are supposed to be having fun right? 5. During the festive season there is likely to be a fair few half days and non work days than there normally is. Be mindful that boredom WILL promote unnecessary eating. Make sure you are not sitting around every day of the Festive season. Make a plan with something new to do each day. There are bound to be loads of activities in your local area. Why not join in the fun? If you are going to be at home, try to be productive and then at

32 | DV8OXFORD.CO.UK

Page 34

the end of the day, treat yourself to a lovely home cooked meal. A lot of the time we think that what we want is to pig out and eat and eat but when we actually do that; How many of us can actually say that was what we wanted? And do you honestly feel better afterwards? 6. Fall off the band wagon and get back on track (mentally and physically) and stay on track. Getting back on track the next day is crucial! Straight after the party, don’t torment yourself by taking home a ‘doggy bag’ because then you don’t have to deal with it. Schedule in a gym session or physical activity and a healthy meal the next day. Do not feel guilty but rather put your energy into moving forward. 7. Drink water. For every drink have a glass of water, with every meal have a glass of water. Do you enjoy a few drinks? Why not! Wines are the best option, then spirits, depending on what you mix them with… Beer and cider are next and the final is Liqueurs… Cocktails are in a league of their own so it is just a word of warning. The two main issues with regards to alcohol and fat loss are that, firstly, it doesn’t increase confidence but actually lowers your inhibitions which means that you are less in

control of your actions. So, if you are drunk and eating you are likely to eat more because your self-control is slightly faulty. Secondly, alcohol slows down your metabolism and a slow metabolism is one that encourages fat storage. So the more alcohol there is to digest the more fat will be stored from the food that comes in.

The first time you apply these strategies it is always the hardest. It might sound awful having to remember all these things. But if you are able to let go and enjoy your parties, it is very important for you to GET BACK ON TRACK. If you do that then ditch the guilt factor because you won’t need it. If you plan to get right back on it the next day, and you do then enjoy yourself. Why not? We only live once.

I wish you all the very best for your health and fitness as well as a healthy, guilt free, non weight gain Holiday, and Festive Season. Elektra Pavlou Fitness & Health Coach in Oxford www.FitnessCampOxford.com elektra@fitnesscampoxford.com

FOOD NEWS

THE LIVING ROOM We love the food at the Living Room, it has always been a firm favourite with us here at DV8, whether it is a light bite at lunch, a bar snack, or a more intimate dinner for two, the menu has always succeeded in providing something for everyone. As much as we love the classic go to dishes at the Living Room, we were excited to learn that this Winter their menu has expanded to include some new dishes with a Moroccan inspiration. For those of you lacking any winter sun, head to the Living Room to enjoy some delicious fare with a Moroccan twist. We started our dinning experience with a selection of freshly baked breads that were melt in the mouth delicious, and quickly devoured (we know you shouldn’t fill up on bread, but just to make the point... it was awesome!) The knowledgeable and attentive waiter talked us through the menu options, making recommendations and impressing us with his extensive yet accessible wine knowledge as we asked him to suggest wines to compliment each dish.

For starters we sampled the Pan-fried garlic and herb mushrooms on toast, we even had a cheeky poached egg on the top at our waiters recommendation! It was delicious, if your a fan of mushrooms then this is one for you, the creamy herbs and garlic were really flavourful, and the poached egg was an inspired touch! Our choices for the main were obvious, the Moroccan spiced lamb with apricots, dates and almonds, served with giant cous cous just jumped off the page at us. The lamb was perfectly cooked, with the aromatic accompanying flavours. When the menu had said giant cous cous, we hadn't imaged it was actually giant! What it had in size it equaled in flavour (the worry with cous cous is that it can quite often be bland - this definitely wasn't the case!).

We also chose the Rosemary and lemon baked chicken with roasted garlic and mash which made it's debut on the menu. The chicken was mouth watering and perfectly accompanied by the garlic mash (maybe not a choice if you are on a date or wanting to get up close and personal with someone later!), as chicken is one of our favourite foods, we tend to regard ourselves as slight experts in all things poultry, and this ticked all the boxes, you might say chickenlicious! We were so full, we couldn't manage a desert, but they all looked really great, and if we were going to have anything it would have been the baked raspberry ripple cheesecake! We love the new menu at the Living Room, and we recommend that you make a trip there soon. Whether you try something from the new selection or one of their classic dishes, you won't be disappointed. Remember to ask the knowledgeable staff for their suggestions and help, as this will only enhance your experience... To sum it up we’d give them an A*

PARTING SHOT

SOCIALITE Camilla, 21, From Oxford.

Tell us about your outfit tonight? The little black dress! It is always a classic and a must have in any girls wardrobe!

How would you describe ‘Oxford style’? There is a wide variety from the ‘preppy’ look with brogues and Oxford style shirts, all the way through to more outragous and unique outfits. I love them all!

What is your favourite item in your wardrobe something you’ll never part with? My shoe collection! I have (taking a while to think about it) over 50 pairs of shoes!

What is your greatest indulgence in your fashion life? Um, I guess from my previous answer it has to be shoes!

I stay in shape by? I’m a bit of a gym bunny. I try to go as often as I can, and when I say that I go. I really mean I hit the sauna after a hard day in the office! Favourite feature? I guess i have nice hair!

Go-to beauty brand? My go to beauty brand is Clarins

Beauty secret? Well having a good skincare routine is essential, and remembering to stick to it! Also don’t forgot to take your makeup off after a night out before going to sleep! Best beauty advice ever given to me? I have a couple of friends that do make up as a profession, so they are always giving me hints and tips and more importantly shortcuts on how to do makeup!

DV8 3 QUESTIONS Question 1: Your first celebrity crush? Question 2: What was your dream job as a child? Question 3: What’s your favourite cocktail?

JAMES I really fancied Jet from the Gladiators! When I was younger I really wanted to be a pilot. Mojitos all the way!
